- "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is a song by English post-punk band Bauhaus. This song was the band's first single, released on 6 August 1979 by record label Small Wonder. It is often considered the first gothic rock record.
Not only that he is upside down for 9 min... is the fact that he is singing and performing flawlessly that really makes it mindblowing.....
Upside like a bat 🦇
Hmmm youd think hes dont that before would you not? Hes always done it that away my man. Like Count Dracula.
Incredible..amazing performance
@@stephensams9784just when thought you’ve seen all from this extra-ordinary band, they take it to whole new level. Few bands are capable of this
Seriously the best comment is yours
If there was ever such a thing as vampires i believe Peter Murphy would be it. If there were ever such a thing as aliens David Bowie would be it.
Damn straight. Those two are larger than life figures who transcend mankind
Happy Halloween! Have you ever seen the film, The Hunger? David Bowie and Susan Sarandon with the vampire Queen, Catherine Deneuve, still an ageless beauty ... maybe she really is a vampire?! hehehe
I was born three years after Peter Murphy, and every year on Halloween since I heard this song back when it came out, I turn it on, turn it up and dance like a dervish in my room. Thanks Peter and Bauhaus!!
If Murphy & Bowie ever had a kid it would be undead. BTW I'm also a huge Love & Rockets fan
Bowie played an alien in the film "The Man Who Fell to Earth"
If there were ever such a thing as crying zombies Robert Smith would be it.
This song is the Freebird of the goth community
👍😁👏👏👏
🖤 yes.
Lord,
I can't change...
@@mickeywayne5965 😂
I don't know what that is, and I don't care to find out
I was at this show and when he came out upside down, it was the most unbelievable thing! This show cemented them as THE goth band of all times!
This show did nothing. Bauhaus was already the quintessential dark wave band. The term goth was invented because Bauhaus already existed and other bands in the 90s were coming out that weren't even faint copies. Wannabes invented goth. Bauhaus invented themselves.
"Goth " was what the pretentious music press called music like this I never knew anyone refer to themselves as Goths in the 80s.
f’n crazy amazing
Pretty sure Bauhaus cemented themselves as “THE goth band” when they INVENTED it
Lol okay zoomer. Most ignorant comment of all time award 🏆✨
me as a teenager: become a goth
People: it’s just a phase
My goth phase decades later:
And this band is not for everyone. And to those fall in that category, I feel sorry for you, because you don’t know what you’re missing 🦇
I'm 29 and I'm both a Goth and a Metalhead. I've been Goth/Metalhead since I was 14 and now I'm 29..so it's not a "phase" for me.. it helps me emotionally too..
⚰️
Peter's voice somehow manages to fit this song even more as he ages
AGREE!!! I am three years junior to Peter Murphy, and every year on Halloween since this song came out, I turn it on, turn it up and dance like a dervish! Thanks Peter and Bauhaus.
And if you don't know, or haven't seen it, this song appears in the film, The Hunger, with David Bowie, Susan Sarandon and the iconic, glacial and ageless beauty, Catherine Deneuve ... a true vampire queen?!
Gets deeper with age. GREAT!
How many times has he sang this classic? I agree his voice vetrened is raw and right
spoken like a true tweener, teener, tweaker? is it Tweaker? perhaps Wiener? Oh my...lost me train of thought.....Hey , have you seen my glasses. where is my purse? What do you mean on the car? Well, where is the damn car? Jillian choose youth and always stay true to yourself and your fans reminding them that "not bad for your age" and the like.
The whole band really...guitar is even more synched. Hi btw, Peter Murphy is my favorite from this era. Lol like oingo , Concrete Blonde , Banshees and Bauhaus
Upside down like a bat. That’s goth AF!!! 🦇🖤
Indeed. Peter Murphy is the Godfather of goth. 10 minutes upside down! Amazing.
Wasn’t called Goth when this began
He had a song later in the set where he sang from the top of what looked like a ruined staircase from a castle in a billowing cape with a staff, backlit in the smoke. Sounds a bit corny but it did not come off that way at all, it was majestic AF
@@yebhx Do you know what song that was? I can't seem to find the whole concert here on UA-cam
@@cherylbesegai765
Everyone hated that term when the music press started using it…Bauhaus were just Bauhaus to us…Bela’s the only song of their’s that references Vampires (to my recall…)
As a big Bauhaus fan, and a drummer in school.. The drummer is basically playing rudiments.. But to do it for 9 minutes... Wow .. Precision. My friend and I would argue. He always thought they used a drum machine.. It just takes practice to do it over and over.. But it is brilliant!! I'm dead just as Bella !
He looks so bored lol
Bellas UNdead
Bosa Nova was one of the first styles of drumming Kevin practised/mastered. Never looked back......
He's a human metronome on it.
@@SteeeveO BosSa Nova. 😉 And you're so right. Haven't thought about it. 👍👍👍
That can't be easy to sing that entire song upside-down for 9 minutes. I have a Roman chair that I use to invert my spine just as an orthopedic exercise to stretch out and relieve pressure on my discs, but I've never done it for more than, let's say, 30 seconds.
Yeah but you’re not a vampire!
@@dukeon 🤣👌🏻
how does his brain still work
grahamkakerel it doesn’t as a matter of fac..
I was there, and I wish I could go back again and again
This man managed to stay 9 minutes and 42 seconds upside down and sing a song. Amazing
sing a song in an outstanding way!!!!! One hAS TO remark!!!!
Like a bat
Wow. I remember this. Coachella has changed so much.
As much as I love Radiohead's Coachella performance, this has to be the single best ever Coachella performance by any artist. Simply outstanding.
Only time I ever attended Coachella was to see Bauhaus. They did not disappoint. 🦇💀🧛♂️🖤
same!
Every hair on me stands when i hear this track. This as to be one of the most amazing performances ever . Thanks to whoever posted this
Holy shit! I thought it was tongue in cheek when he wore a cape. But hanging upside down?
What the early goths new which got lost somewhere in transalation is to be ridiculously dark and theatric, and to somehow keep a straight face whilst doing so. Even though, in private, they thought it was really fucking funny. I don't think I've seen a better example than this. GO PETE!
Except maybe Nick Cave. That fucker meant it.
This. Him and Dave Vanian always new how to keep the funny in goth. It's why whenever I go dressed out on my goth nights, I look at myself in the mirror and say "I look cool AND ridiculous." It's part of the whole thing. Everyone wants to treat it doomy and gloomy but it's made for the hysterics and theatrics.
One of the greatest moments of rock history.
Definitely...
Yeah, but who actually is Bella Lugosi's Dad?
mr. lugosi
This song feels if it was recorded in black and white
i wanted to say the exact same thing =D
I'm feeling so goth right now that I'm shitting bats!
There are people who put gerbils up their asshole because it makes them feel.......... ?
He had to practice being upside down for years!
He’s a real bat, a real vampire...can’t get any more GOTH than this! 🙌🖤🔥🤘🔥🦇🕷🕸🥀
#grandfatherofgoth
That's truly a goth power move 😂😍🐈⬛🦇
@@TheModernRiot absofuckinglutely! 🖤✨🦇✨😍✨
his eyes even glow in the dark
The fact that Kevin Haskins plays the same repetitious beat for the entire song is just amazing to me.
Bossa nova beat too.
🎉 7:48 simply because it is KeviN HaskINS.. Right 💙🎉🥳
It utterly makes the track... straight up metronome.
Who knows a song in 2 seconds??? The crowd reaction is a testament to this classic. Murphy most handsome ever❤.
No other song starts with that beat. WE ARE FANS!
10 minutes hanging upside down? No way on earth I'd do this.
pure spinal tap! "we at had dracula that was in danger of passing out because he had to much blood in his head!"
You obviously don’t own an inversion rack or table
@@Organise_Space I thought the same thing! This could totally be in a Spinal Tap movie if something malfunctioned! Glad nothing went wrong but I don't know how he didn't pass out! How did he get out of that? Was this at the end of the set or the beginning? So many questions!!! Wish I could have been there! Looks like a great show!!!
@@Midnight_Rider_777 this was the first song on their set, Peter Murphy also said in an interview to coachella, that he was trainning for this moment several months before, he said It in the new documentary about coachella
@@Midnight_Rider_777 It was the first song and he went back offstage hanging upside down and they got him down there during the instrumental part at the end and he walked back on for the next song.
Okay...my mind is officially blown. His voice is smouldering with sex appeal. I love that man.
Peter said he rehearsed this many times
I hope so..
Well he does sleep upside down
About 20 years ago I hung upside down on some yoga ropes for about 30 minutes. When I tried to stand up afterwards my legs gave out from underneath me, probably from lack of blood flow. I thought it was funny at the time, like I'd drunk too much tequila. I still hang for 10-15 minutes at a time. It does something to your nervous system that leaves you feeling very relaxed. No wonder Pete Murphy looks so chill hanging there.
This song takes me back to my teen years in the UK, when it was released. Great memories of good times.
@Macavity No you don't, lol. I teach yoga and have practiced various types yoga headstands for over 30 years. 30 minutes hanging is a long time, but you'd only black out if you had some kind of preexisting health condition.
@@annwe6 this response makes no sense. "No you dont" what?
@@InWitheNew The OP removed his comment 9 months ago. I can't remember what I was replying to...
10 minutes or more and you start taking risks on your health & life. Human beings were not designed to handle prolonged upside-down sessions.
Murphy must’ve trained so hard to pull of this performance l!
I saw so many amazing bands at Coachella. This was one of the best performances. Coachella sucks now.
That's a generalization. Tons of shitty bands have filled the Coachella lineup every year. And there's always been a standout group of really good artists every year too. Coachella is on the same level of quality as it always has been.
1987 standing on the second floor balcony, piss drunk, in a house right on the edge of the Eastern Illinois University campus, shout-singing “ohhh Belllaahhh! Behhllaahhh’s undeaaaad!”
Next morning my roommate says “dude you got a good voice!”
College.
Everyone needs to experience college. Whether you succeed or fail. Everyone needs to experience college.
I’m a 50yr old truck driver now lol. But I been to college.
I also went to Eastern Illinois University and I am your age
Your post made me crack up and reminisce. In the late 80s at a different college, my friend and I screamed the lyrics to "Orgasm Addict" (Buzzcocks) in the dorms' courtyard around 2am! Fun memories! And no one told us to shut up!! Hahaha
@@gojump7 and lagilbert67 Yah, as a Goth kid, i was High school" some College" it was quite apparent High School kicked my ass LOL
Fuck ya man ...... throwing flaming refrigerators and pinball machines off the third story .... long story but it was epic ..... nobody was harmed ... thank god!!!!
Great story bud
Back when Coachella acts mattered. Nothing will beat this Bauhaus reunion
I saw Bauhaus the following year in Birmingham. It wasn't a concert, it was fucking performance art
He's a vampire of course
I remember seeing them play in 1985 when I was only 200 years old
I grew up with this incredible band. How old is Peter Murphy here hanging upside down. That's punk rock for sure. I guarantee you this performance showed up any other band at Coachella.
It's always that way too. I went to Osheaga a few years back and Nick Cave made Jack White look amateurish performance wise.
Peter was just a couple months short of his 48th birthday at the time of this performance.
Back when coachella wasn’t mainstream
Err...this same year had Coldplay, Weezer, and Snow Patrol. Coachella has had mainstream acts along with more underground acts for a long time.
Ridiculouss.
they had coldplay, weezer, and nine inch nails that same year also wasnt mainstream with one of the top 3 most famous goth rock bands as one of their acts
@@bgilley8199 And Chemical Brothers -- they tranced me out - I had to nap - my girlfriend was dancing like crazy.
all of the other responses are missing the point. yes, they had mainstream acts, they always did. but the people attending weren't mainstream. they were the types of people who go to over 12+ concerts per year. somewhere around 2010 that started to shift towards the fashionista/social media mecca it is today. rip
You outdid yourself on this Mr. Murphy!
Ngl the Coachella documentary brought me here. They got me into Bauhaus. Wtf him being upside down for that long is the coolest shit ever
Coming in upside down doesn't get more goth than that
Peter Murphy is a Goth God!
I was there. I learned there what an amazing performer Peter Murphy is. Saw him again at Cruel World in Pasadena. Bauhaus is a great live experience.
I was there too, on Sunday. They blew me away with their performance!
I think I bought this (12" version, as it was way too long for a normal 7" 'single) in 1981, and, in hindsight, this has been my most favourite record I have given away. Great that others have since appreciated and recognised the brilliance of this song (and of this performance).
Oh bad form UA-cam
….ads in a song you’re begging people to use ad blockers
"Happy" International Goth Day! 5/22/2020....
Omfg!! I am a person who was, as I always say now, too much of a close~minded metalhead in the 80s & didn't open my mind to other genres until Marilyn Manson got me more intrigued and interested in Bowie that I began my journey into new wave/goth/etc...& thru that & UA-cam...& sometimes I hate saying that bcuz I hate technology lol well its a love/hate thing, but then I realize I actually HAVE heard more Bauhaus & Bowie & Depeche Mode & Duran Duran and Souxie & the FUCKN Banchees!!!??& I think I spelled that wrong but...they've all been in the background of the Playlist of my life but I've NEVER seen THIS particular performance & its freakin amazing and I am actually S0 fuckn glad I got to see/hear this brilliance✨️🦇✨️
The gothic anthem!
Wow that was amazing. And I have no idea how he managed to stay upside down for that long.
He’s a vampire?
The camera was upside down.
9 minutes IS EASY FOR PPL WHO DO IT EVERYDAY...he might not do it everyday but practicing alot makes it easier.
He was tied to a cable
You can be cool ..but never Peter Murphy hangin from the rafters upside down singin @ Coachella - ICEY
I was there, it was awesome, after them was Cold Play, time to leave.
😂 yes time to leave
Haha, so was I, did the same.
Yup I would’ve done the same! Hahaha

Cold play more like cold sore
Saw them at Hammersmith Palais in 1982 or 3, Pete Murphy no top, leather trousers, indescribable
This is incredibly insane hanging from the ceiling.
Thumbs up!!!
Auch eine Kunst für sich, 9 Minuten lang kopfüber zu hängen, und tadellos zu singen :-) ♥🕸🎸🦇 .... It is also an art in itself to hang upside down for 9 minutes and sing flawlessly:-) 🦇
Inmaculate voice my dear Peter...
This reminds me why I love concerts.
That voice.
Que banda senhores!
Boa noite, vim aqui dizer que só o amor de Deus pode preencher nosso Vazio. Só falem com Ele
Probably the greatest footage on all of UA-cam. ( the first minute anyways)
After Bauhaus I'd call it a day. Coldplay? Nah! LOL!!!
Puta show, Peter Murphy de ponta cabeça cantou muito.
Mr. Murphy wins goth.
Any questions?
Greatest stage entry ever.

Such a good performance. I am so glad you posted this recording. I was at Coachella 2005 with a girlfriend who I suspect did not enjoy Bauhaus as much as I did (she was super happy about Chemical Brothers set in a tent - I fell asleep in the grass).
I have goosebumps. Brings back good memories. I didn't see this performance, but many others before this.
im lucky enough to have seen them live twice EPIC
damn...you sure are lucky. When was that?
Me too. LA in the 80s at the Roxy
Was anyone super triggered by him being upside down for so long lol? I couldn’t focus because I was imagining how uncomfortable that must be after a few minutes 😆
In my heart he will always be Lestat.
