What I like about this doc is that it doesn’t shy away from the pain of wrestling. It’s a great sport and it make a man of you, but it breaks your heart and forces you to confront loss.
with all due respect to Budke, he should have just transferred to another school where he could have been a starter. he would have gotten more mat time and it may have boosted his confidence going to a lesser school instead of being the crappiest one on an elite team.
Jake Percival was no random freshman. He would go on to be a 4 time All American and have over 100 career victories. But to come in as a Freshman to beat such a high caliber wrestler is impressive.
Thanks you so much for this post. I've searched high & low to buy this because I never got to see it in it's entirety. From one grappling fanatic to another!
best part of this whole documentary is between 3:20 and 6:07 just because of lynyrd skynyrd simple man and how heart filled this part is too. I wish I could go back and wrestle again just because how much I grew up and learned throughout my years. It's crazy looking back and all the good times, but remembering the hard and tough times even more!!!
It's just stupid how Budkes dad blames the coaches for his son not being a champ. Like they were supposed to cater to his needs, but it doesn't work that way. It's like a teacher getting blamed if the kid fails a subject when it's not their responsibility to make the kid study.
What do you want his Dad to do? He was just being supportive. He should have transferred to another school. He was a 4-time state champion in high school so he has those memories.
His dad was being supportive. When I was younger, I totally would have agreed with what you said. But now as a father, I’d hate to see my son suffer the same mental anguish. The kid had a dream and he was working his ass off trying to fulfill it. Most people give up on their dream without even trying to achieve it. He still hung with the toughest wrestling program in the country for 5 years. He won 3 state titles in Iowa. I’d have been elated with just one!
Josh Budsky, you didn't let anyone down till you quit. You never truly lose till you quit. You had a chance as long as you stayed. You quit, your done.
Not insulting him. Sorry I didn't happen to know how to spell his name. It is a good thing I had this 40 year old with the last name of frag to tell me what to do. Thinks he is my dad, but the funny part is even my dad isn't in charge of me. K thanks bye.
I do worry about my own. I am in high school am 3 sport athlete. 2x all state 3x All league 2x league champs. My gpa ranges from a 3.2-3.4 accumulative and I am in a 5 start academically rated high school. My father and mother dumped me when I was 2. So.... if you where my father you would of dumped me when I was 2. That's why I don't listen to them.
The sport lost its fun for him. It was a source of misery for him. When something becomes a burden instead of an enjoyment, you have two choices: keep going and hope it might get better or cut your losses and move on in life.
Mr. Mocco was a really good, loving, supportive man. Being a Bail Agent, I've seen to many people go to prison....that shouldn't have. Other's SHOULD have though....
Yea our justice system is anything but just. We have more 0e9ple serving as government slaves than anyone else on earth. Even those authoritarian countries that were supposed to be afraid of and our kangaroo courts have conviction rates similar to nazi germanys. It won't change until the tough on crime simpletons stop voting assuming a new generation of them doesn't come in to take their place.
It's so scary... Jake percival was the only state champ from my high school... And the singlet he wore in his match at Albany... Is the same one that's in my high school wrestling room. He graduated from Amherst Steele high school. The same high school I go to.
Josh budke' s father should not be blaming other's for his son's failures. However I do agree with a lot of other comments about Josh Budke not belonging in Iowa. Iowa in my opinion deserved to get some sense knocked into them. All the coaches cared about is winning. They get outsmarted constantly by more calculated wrestlers at a higher level. Ones I notice smile a lot and really know how to plan for tougher matches.
To this day, they still seem to get outsmarted. Your comment hit the nail on the head. One match that comes to mind was Metcalf losing to Darrien Caldwell in 2009. Caldwell countered perfectly and frustrated Metcalf the entire match.
Right. Spencer Lee just got pinned by Tommy Ramos a few months ago, and he didn't come back for 3rd. Just like Mike Zadick. Steve Mocco became NCAA champion long behold after he left IOWA. Seth Gross, too. Iowa athletes are also constantly getting hurt. It's one thing to train hard. It's another thing to have reoccurring injuries.
@@richiesmooth8574 Mocco won a title at Iowa in 2003 and then one another in 2005 at Oklahoma State. I think he saw that the Iowa ship was sinking and wanted to be a part of a championship team. That 2005 Oklahoma State team was one of the greatest of all time. 5 National Champs.
I can't believe the level difference from highschool to college if a guy that was a three time state champion can't even make the starting squad.... wow
Jordan Burroughs only won a single NJ state title in HS. He would go on to win 2 NCAA titles, Olympic Gold, and 6 World titles. Some people think that they were good enough to coast. Others work tirelessly to be the best.
23 years later and to this day I've always wondered what was going through Mike Zadick's mind in the R12 match. His opponent was Marc Hoffer of American, who was no slouch. Zadick won that match to become a 3 time All American. Hoffer finished his career thrice the R12. Zadick then lost a 4-4 tiebreaker rideout to Jesse Jantzen of Harvard. Jantzen stuck Percival later on for 3rd in the first period. Zadick won his 7th place bout 12-9 in a wild back and forth with Scott Frohardt. What if Zadick would've gotten that escape against Jantzen? Of course he would've had to have won again against Jamarr Billman, but say he had. What does Mike Zadick Vs Jake Percival part II look like? I'll wonder that till the day I die
He came back to take 7th, obviously. Zadick lost 4-18 against Percival here, in the quarters. They said it because Zadick didn't get the NCAA championship
@anderson12ization Contrary to popular belief, Iowa wrestlers do have days off. They wouldn't be so good if they did not. I didn't believe it until I heard one of the coaches in the documentary (previous part) say "Have an off day, but have to watch film".
What is Burke doing now? 2019, anyone know? The kid had talent being a 3 time state champ, but it seamed most of the kids all had Great credentials, so tuff to unseat the Best in the Country, hope he is a successful young man.
Because the world kept beating him down and beating him down nand he didnt have the strength to keep going, so he took the easy way out and quit. Quiting always easier than winning but it will kill you inside. Some people can not take the pain.
What I like about this doc is that it doesn’t shy away from the pain of wrestling. It’s a great sport and it make a man of you, but it breaks your heart and forces you to confront loss.
Ya, it sure does, but that's why it's probably the best teacher for life.
i love steve mocco's dad, the dude brings a mountain of food wherevever he goes
He encapsulates everything good about New Jersey, haha.
with all due respect to Budke, he should have just transferred to another school where he could have been a starter. he would have gotten more mat time and it may have boosted his confidence going to a lesser school instead of being the crappiest one on an elite team.
he should have just transferred ? Budke is an adult
Thought the same thing...

That song is so bad ass
11:58 that doubt gave me chills what a badass
Watching those guys eating in the hotel sort of reminded me of being on Warfighter in the Army. lol
Dan Gable has helped run my practice in school before. Such an inspirational man

7:42 Coach Brian Smith of the Mizzou Tigers! Tiger style!!
Poor Budke. Just didn't quite have it. Still tougher than most men out there.
This is the real March Madness
Toughest Sport. Bar None.

Burke’s dad playing the victim. Come on guy
Great documentary. But no big tens
Budkes Dad is his biggest mental hurdle. He blames the coaches when in reality its budkes fear of disappointing him that holds him back.
arguably the sickest part of the whole documentary...
Mocco's dad is just like my grandmother lol. All about the food. Sucks when you have to cut weight though
Steve is a mid sized heavyweight. He could stuff his face and still have a 25 lb cushion for weigh-ins.
Budke had a tough time, man. I feel for him.

hahahahahahaha mocco looked like a huge little kid but it was awesome how his dad did that
Come on, Steve. Eat your steak!
He came back to take 7th, obviously. Zadick lost 4-18 against Percival here, in the quarters.
They said it because Zadick didn't get the NCAA championship
Steve Moccoo's dad is awesome!
Steve Mocco's dad learned to cook in prison, like in Good Fellas.
gosh dangit...There's a part 7??
Mr Zadick is pretty great too

Awsome video lets go hawkeye i wonder how they are now in 2011\
@c1t4d3l fair enught,do you wrestle yourself ?
What is Burke doing now? 2019, anyone know? The kid had talent being a 3 time state champ, but it seamed most of the kids all had Great credentials, so tuff to unseat the Best in the Country, hope he is a successful young man.
zadick and moco have great parents
Because the world kept beating him down and beating him down nand he didnt have the strength to keep going, so he took the easy way out and quit. Quiting always easier than winning but it will kill you inside. Some people can not take the pain.
Why did he say the freshmen ended Zadick's college career? What about the consolation bracket, did Zadick just decide to leave after he lost??
How come Mocco left Iowa?
Why do people dislike these?
LOL LUKE'S MOM
@DOitRIGHT135 because some people probably lost to them but agreed these guys are awsome
agreed, he would have been more successful at a different school.
Budtke, nowadays, could've went somewhere else and probably All-American'd.
why would he just give up and quit?
Dan McCool
Looks like Rashad Evans at 5:26
Obviously not though.
Lukes mom hahaha
wish i was a heavy weight so i could eat whatever i want then lose like 10 pounds in a workout
@fresh1r1 "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd (Deftones do a nice cover of this tune)
I do feel bad for Burke whatever they say
Eat your steak Steve
is it me do these guys over train way to much
who would have ever thought these psychopaths would also be such sore losers?
Wrong school for Budke, never developed like he could have or should have.
maybe he is just not good enough
Yeah the most dominant wrestling program of all time is the problem.
Too much emphasis on winning. Better to continually focus on improvement and life lessons.
@ELiTExSPEED AHHHHHHHH WTFFF?!!?!?!??! this is why i should stop reading comments before watching videos...
@PS3KICKSXBOX thats the cruelty of the sport, btw u should spend time playing ps3 if u wanna talk shit about a collegiate wrestler
