The fact that you're forced into one extreme political view VS another kind of took me out of it, since I didn't feel like any of the responses they offered me with regards to either ideology was something I would've bought into. You're generally shoehorned into being either a militant communist or an amoral capitalist, and then as Grimbeard mentioned, the game kind of makes fun of you for falling into either extreme, despite not really giving you another option besides complete indifference.
@@KyokujiFGC Either? There's 3 others you haven't mentioned, including a 'militant centrist'. @Wojciech Pordzik I agree with you. Some sort of combat would have been nice in disco elysium, or even the option to use ur weapon on who u want or something, true total control of your Character
Nothing about Disco is supposed to focus on combat, that's why there is none. I bet putting it in the game was never in their plans. There are physical checks, sure, and one 'fight' i'm aware of, but as you know the "builds" are actually the character's psyche, their entire psychological atributes and some of them are kinda characters themselves, talking to you and arguing with each other over what course of action you want to do next. It's totally a case of apples vs bananas but to me that concept alone is a thousand times more interesting than any kind of rpg builds. I hope this team makes more games like this, building up from that same idea.
@@tabernaclejones6115 I feel like combat would have ruined this game. The story has nothing to do with combat. If there was a combat system it would most likely be pretty basic and not particularly satisfying. It'd also necessitate an already small team to take a bunch of resources away from the main focus of their game. One of the only complaints I hear about Planescape is the combat. Even if it turns a lot of people off of the game some experiences are best without certain systems. It"s like putting long ass dialogue trees in a Call of Duty campaign.
Here from current day The Final Cut is a fantastic experience and all the voices add so much to the game. There's something to be said for experiencing some of it in silence but IMO that gets vastly outweighed by the wonderful performance pretty much every VA gives, and being able to rely on your ears over pure reading I'd imagine makes it more accessible by people who are less a fan of books. The one thing I'd add is don't be afraid to save-scum one or twice. DO NOT do it constantly, failure is 100% part of the experience, but if you've exhausted every other avenue and feel you're actually stuck don't feel bad. The game will just be happy it keeps being played.
When Klaasje's influence on you literally starts influencing almost every single one of your skills except volition (I think) was one of the greatest things I ever experienced. This is currently my favorite storybased game, I can't wait for the final cut, and also one day we will teach "hardcore gamers" to read so they will no longer dislike games because reading=bad but bang bang stab stab=good.
I loved that moment, where Volition starts shit talking about all the other skills, forcing you to realize that you had been played like a fiddle the entire time. A great moment for me playing the game, where the very mechanics I had been relying on had secretly been leading me astray.
Not at all. From the very start, Having that debate in your head whether you should wake up or go back into the void is something I have to wrestle with every morning,
One point I like about the "ex-wife" part of the story in the game - there is a certain inclination that it might not be all self-indulgent phantasy of the main character. There are certain tidbits dropped about the Goddess character is viewing his ex as actually having an equally omnipotent husband. Husband that we learn much less about, yet that shares certain characteristics with our quite unfortunate protagonist. So there is definitely that implication that this whole dream sequence at the end is merely a figment of imagination, version protagonist wants to believe. After all, we can call the ex through quite real landline and have a proper nothing-out-of-ordinary awkward dialogue about past relations. But there still lingers that small possibility that there is a lot more to this. Especially if you put together some of the more provocative scenes, like having the dialogue with the embodiment of the City itself due to dancing too hard in the Church. City pointing out that protagonist's role is quite a lot bigger in the whole story, past and future, than he would like it to be.
That’s so interesting cause I didn’t get any of those scenes. I played the thinker class and tried to get as much knowledge as I can about the world, the murderer, and the character’s past, and tried to play a character trying to fix his life without taking any drugs. Interesting how the game subverts your expectation of what’s the correct way of exploring the world (as a think) but really you would explore much more if you played differently I believe (or at least important aspects).
Rewatching this just made me heartbroken after finding out the top heads of the studio have cancelled every single of the upcoming projects announced and have effectively destroyed the team behind this game, and now we will never see anything like this ever again. Man, your content is just SO entertaining and enjoyable. Thank you for all the effort and quality you put into your presentations, the humor, the classy sarcasm, and the deep analysis of the characters and events in the games you choose to review. I appreciate every bit of it.
Never thought I’d watch a review of any game & end up hearing the reviewer talk about SikTh, play Mermaid Slur & Part of the Friction, & discuss Mikee Goodman’s poetry/voice. Beautiful stuff & immensely fun music to play. Keep being you.
My read on the parodic political lines (27:20) is that they critique ideologies in general. You can't build an entire personality for yourself by blindly adhering to one political outlook or another. And if you try, you become a parody of what you intended to be. In any case, thrilled to see you cover this game! Best writing to come along in a video game in a long time.
I sometimes wish I could play games like this. But I need my tight controls, jumping, slashing and pew pew to get it on. That is one of the reasons I love channels like this though. Good vid.
Darkwood and this. Two insanely well done games I played thanks to you. Also your videos are weirdly effective in treating hangover. Happy New Year Grim!
Best game ever! The opening sequence stumbling downstairs and the conversations with the manager had me in tears with laughter. Enjoyed the dark parts as well, overall the whole experience was revelatory.
This game is one of the best written games I have ever played. Planescape torment had a stronger plot, but the writing here is much more powerful for me - so human, so fun, so sobering, so creative - I almost never gets touched by writing, but man, this game stabbed me right in the feels, so many times. Must be on my top 5 of all time at least...
I spent about two weeks playing through this. I would wake up early before work, smoke some weed, lie down in bed and play with my controller on PC and just get lost in the world and story. Truly one of the best world settings and writings I’ve ever experienced in a game.

Finally bought this on the strength of your review, and boy, what a treat. This is the first thing that's come close to scratching the narrative roleplaying itch I got from the original Sunless Sea. Just a beautifully bold vision that makes you realize other worlds are possible.
Disco Elysium was so good. Especially since I played the final cut, the voice acting is just... phenomenal. I hate that I now HAVE to compare every other game to it and that I can never play it for the first time again.

Thank you grimble, I saw this game for sale on steam and had been hearing good things about it and wasn't quite sure if I should get it. Very excited to see the whole video, thanks for your great work!
I finally played this game, it's true that it's a long game and requires you to engage with its characters and ideas, so is not something you can pickup on a whim and play through it in a couple of days. But that's to be celebrated, and I understand that some people won't like the ideas or simply the amount of reading to be done, but the fact that they're not willing to engage with the ideas or the amount of reading already tells me a lot about who they are. I've personally never felt so many emotions while playing a game, it has been a journey and a much more memorable experience than 99 % of what I've played. Great review.
Mostly doing this to bump the engagement but I honestly love your content and spent last weekend watching your entire library. Keep up the good work man.
One of the best videos I have had the privilege of gobbling down in a good little while. Just about to play the game first time and you have given me confidence to ease into these freaky ass psychedelic waters. Chur mate.
Man, in retrospect I was anxious about every line getting voiced. Not only did they keep the option of partially voiced but I love everything being voiced now.
Hi, just wanted to chime in and say as someone who actually doesn't enjoy reading books (if I say I've read something it means I listened to it via audiobook) I really enjoyed the final cut of disco elysium. I can't think of any instance where someone didn't sound like a perfect fit for the person they were playing.
When I saw the collection of negative reviews, I thought "Huh, so this game also put up a mirror even for people who didn't like it. It compelled them enough to have them show their thoughts on the reviews page. Amazing!"
Mad respect for your opinions on the Sikth catelogue: not a fan of the 2017 album but the first two albums (and the Kickstarted EP!) hold up :) Fun fact: Justin Hill, their ex-vocalist produced our first album, and our new single, which we should be releasing soon :) cheers for the video reviews dude!
Not every game is for everyone, I get that. I also don't hardly ever comment on anything, much less read other people's comments. I think we should all keep that shit to ourselves far more often, or like, talk to actual people you know about it. I say all this to say, what the actual fuck. Who doesn't like this game!? It's... Nearly perfect. Whatever, I loved it and appreciate your review. I had a brand new experience watching this review that I've never had, which was getting so angry at bad reviews that I had to smoke a cigarette to finish the video. Hahaha so thanks for that. Keep up the good work. You're hilarious.
I really wonder what you would think of music in "else Heart.Break()". That game has a visual style that looks like covers of El Huervo's albums. A lot of it is "party music", so I'm not sure that the entirety of the OST will be to your liking, but it is good.
One thing I didn't like is if you internalize (AKA, "save" an idea) then the game treats it like everyone knows. I internalized things because I wanted to learn more about it or have that idea for a later interaction. And yes, I know what internalize means. I just wish they had another decision whether to go with it or not and that no one actually knows what you picked unless you tell them
I just finished it for the first time, I gotta say this is a gem and I'm glad I found your video and played this, I weirdly felt like I could relate to Harry a lot
I know this question is a year late. but... the Supernatural episode that made you cry: was one of them the one where Dean gets a quiet life? With fucking SIMPLE MAN playing over it? God damn, my throat is tight even now.
The quest about the Worker Class Woman is an emotional rollercoaster. The dialogue options at the start made me literally burst into laughter for half a minute (and, of course, I chose the silliest lines possible!), while the conclusion makes it one of the saddest quests in the videogame history...
I played Harry as truly repentant of his past and tried to stay sober. But needed to get drunk to help through a skill check and the guilt I felt when Kim found out I was drunk hurt on a deep level. Never has a game made me feel actual depression from the character I was playing

Good vid.
You sound really boring.
@@Largentina. That's ok, I have other things going for me ^^
Dude, your shit is really really good.
'There is a thing called nuance.' Gives the game a 1. Nice job buddy
"they become really reactionary and defensive, like the entire conceit of this segment." ... bro your humor is so understated. I can't get enough :)
No truce with the furies was the perfect working title because it encapsulates the feeling of never being able to turn off all the voices in your head
It’s Friday, I just finished working outside for the last 10 hours in -15 weather and Grim just dropped a new video...
Hell yeah.
Aaaaa! A game from my country!
This has got to be the newest game you've reviewed
and it's the newest video he's posted.....coincidence??
@@RoboBoddicker It's actually the oldest video he's posted.
I find your tone and cadence very soothing. I replay these while I animate to keep me sane. Go figure :D
Your videos have me scared of spoilers for this game. You are a very good writer
This video was so good it didn't even feel like an hour long.
Grimbeard I binged most of your game reviews in the last few weeks and finally subscribed. I'm doing a playthrough of vampire the masquerade bloodlines and can't wait to watch that review when I finish playing :)
Finally bought this on the strength of your review, and boy, what a treat. This is the first thing that's come close to scratching the narrative roleplaying itch I got from the original Sunless Sea. Just a beautifully bold vision that makes you realize other worlds are possible.
"On, off and FFUUCCKKIINNGG PPAANNIICC"
Why yes my man
this is like, the disco elysium of disco elysium reviews
Getting Kim to dance with you and the ravers is my favorite thing!
Disco Elysium was so good. Especially since I played the final cut, the voice acting is just... phenomenal. I hate that I now HAVE to compare every other game to it and that I can never play it for the first time again.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
My two favourite things. Together.
I have never been more hyped than I am to watch this video
"maybe that's just me self-inserting and being Red by the game"
nice
:O
@@GrimBeard ФwФ
@@GrimBeard I have never felt more called out by a game. The socialism ideals, the synths and electronics music, trying to make something new. The nihilism and falling into the void. The whole thing. Read me like a fuckin book.
This game was the most moving piece of media i have experienced since my heart went cold at age 4, seeing this review of it was the second most
The goth king has delivered
I think the game is beautiful, funny, poignant, intelligent...I could go on and on. I am glad it won awards. Thanks for the amazing review.
hell yea dood!
Im kinda mad at myself for not finding this channel sooner but at least im here now
Hi, just wanted to chime in and say as someone who actually doesn't enjoy reading books (if I say I've read something it means I listened to it via audiobook) I really enjoyed the final cut of disco elysium. I can't think of any instance where someone didn't sound like a perfect fit for the person they were playing.
I have never been so happy to see you review this game. I love it!
Great video Grim!
An incredible video on an incredible game. Shared this with a ton of people. Keep up the great work man!
OMG, Thanks for this
i always hated the whole " if you want a story in a video game read a book." argument. it's the most dismissive thing i have ever heard/
Just played the game, almost definitely the best game I've ever played. I'm in love it with it and might go read the translation of the book.
Imma have to get my longest YE BOI ever out before I watch this, gimme a sec Grim Daddy
Divinity Original Sin's use of a narrator makes me tentatively hopeful for how a fully voices Disco Elysium could be
I come, from the future, they did a really fuckin good job with the narratior voice acting. It sounds and feels amazing.
HARDCORE TO THE MEGA
Something beautiful is going to happen
I'm honestly so excited to watch this that I don't know when I will be able to actually watch it. This is a dream come true.
Comments.
I'll be passing your channel along for friends to see. It's just precious.
Circumlocutory is a word only used by the circumlocutory
Just hearing this music again after not playing for a year brings up so many feelings in me.
Thanks for always diving behind the music! I'm a videogame music freak! Thanks for all your brilliant work! 🤘🌚🖖
I just wish they had another decision whether to go with it or not and that no one actually knows what you picked unless you tell them
Great review of an absolute masterpiece
Grimby is king of my heart. Which is black, and made of ice.
I just finished it for the first time, I gotta say this is a gem and I'm glad I found your video and played this, I weirdly felt like I could relate to Harry a lot
31:11 That's a cool werewolf action figure hanging on your wall
:)
No truce with the furies is the only thing holding me back from a truce with the furries.
Holy shit, an hour. Guess I'm not going to bed yet.
Yaaaaas king you did it
47:37 Kuno made me laugh out loud. He had the funniest lines IMO
