Arx Fatalis was a really good game. It seems like one of the last RPGs which were closed-world in nature, where each area required some form of puzzle solving to progress, similar to an adventure game. This style dropped out of favor, with the more open-world Elder Scrolls style becoming the norm. It was a very different experience than modern RPGs. For example, there were a fixed number of enemies in the world and when you cleared an area it remained empty. This made sense since the entire adventure is underground. It also meant that every combat was more involved, difficult and meaningful, unlike modern RPGs where you fight hordes of respawning enemies. The downside of this style of the game is that it was easy to get stuck, where you did not know what to do next to progress, and you end up wandering around talking to NPCs and searching for hidden passages that you might have missed. I guess the closest game in style that many people are familiar with is Dark Souls, where you progress through increasingly difficult areas, except Arx Fatalis focused more on general RPG elements rather than just combat. The best thing about Arx was probably the atmosphere, with many interesting unique rooms and NPCs - none of the generic repeated stuff like in open world games.
I do miss that kind of design in rpg games, problem is these types of games experimented a lot and that often led to huge flaws in their systems but still i do miss em.
The newer Deus Ex games are still very much in this style. In a *sense*, Divinity: Original Sin, is as well, at least in terms of having a well defined progression through the game, region by region. There are other examples too, but the modern Deus Ex games are probably the best example
These types of games were better. It made more sense to have a limited number of enemies but each of them were hard to fight, took a while and didn't respawn. It made sense in a real world kind of way. How many times do you think you would have to fight walking around anyway. Only time respawning enemies make sense is if it's part of the lore like they replace the soldier/guards or its some mutant monster that clones itself. Certain episodes would respawn the enemies so you wouldn't be stalled on xp and level gain but also made it made sense why they respawned like new soldiers arrived as reinforcements. Also some enemies couldn't even be defeated in Arx so sneaking around was important and that stat came useful for once. Also should try out Gothic 1 which used the same kind of rules but was more third person. Arx and Gothic both made sense that your choices matter, how you tackled the problem, who you sided with, who you talked to will determine the outcome, your rewards and how well you can bribe NPCs.
There's a great open source implementation of the engine called Arx Libertatis, makes the game run much better on modern Windows, natively on Linux and I think MacOSX as well. I believe it also lets you scale the UI so your inventory isn't ridiculously tiny on current display sizes as well.
It's based on the original source code, because Arkane released it under the GPL. But yeah, definitely the best way to play it today, you can play it on a bunch of platforms this way.

Loved Arx Fatalis. By the way, the majority of the old guard of Arkane, including the founder, has left the studio after Prey because Bethesda was interfering with their work so much demanding safe AAA streamlined crap, so don't count on Deathloop being as awesome as Dishonored or Prey, as it's not the same Arkane we used to love that is developing it. I already finished it twice so I'm gonna stick around for the spoilers I think the biggest sin of the game is the spellcasting, the spells are amazing, you can combine them and do some neat tricks, but the actual process of casting is so damn frustrating, it definetively shot itself in the foot, if there was an autocasting (or more like auto drawing) it would definetively be one of my all time favorites

For someone so into rats, I'm surprised you failed to notice the weirdly elaborate ass texture the small ones have. Although in all fairness I think it's visible in one cutscene. Otherwise you have to notice when they do the death flip, or have them die in a way you can look under them. I am by no means a rat-ass deviant of any kind, it's just impossible to unsee once you've noticed it. Not will it leave your brain.
I remember that game... fun times when you switched from classic mouse (with rubber-covered ball, no pun intended) to laser and 4 :3 display to something larger, and wider. Fuuuuun times....nah, casting was terrible if nigh impossible, game wasn't prepared for that change. Good thing Arx Libertatis helped. In memory of Arx- End of the Sun, what a promising project, now dead. XboX version felt a bit like FROM's classic King's Field games, for some reasons? I really wish that some day FROM will be back doing first person RPGs....
Great video on one of my favorite games of all time. What I liked about Arx the most is its DIY feel. It’s a textbook case of cleverly and creatively using minimal assets and resources and frankensteining them into something special that stands out

yeah, those fucking red egg stones... and you had your footage. I spent a fucking week trying to find that stupid barrel where I had put that useless stone. It's weird how main dude's face is all jacked up but the old dude and king look so much better (for 2002). I guess you spend less time looking at your own face...
Finished this game in one or two games. It's not long at all. It's design philosophy is super different than Morrowind as well. I mean all they have in common is both being first person rpgs. No offence but I truly hate Morrowind fans.
I passed this game up back in the day, don't really know why. Looks decent enough, and I generally enjoy old-school jank 3D games with somewhat clunky controls. I swear I'm not a masochist. It's just, they have a peculiar charm to them, don't they? Something I feel has been lost with the rise of graphics technology. Back then, they really had to work hard to invest you into the world. Now it's all flashy visuals doing the legwork, with far less room for the imagination to work its magic. Anyway, good ep, as always. P.S. Please don't get my hopes up by mentioning Legacy of Kain unless you plan to cover it on some future episode. Thx
Once you learn to draw the runes and get the feel of HOW the game wants you to draw it then you can draw them while running and gunning and really feel like Dumbledorf fighting Voldemort

I’ve never felt more represented by a UA-cam video in the moment this man said “Tell me more about the rats.”
Hell yea
highly pogged video champ. i adore this game.
Great video on one of my favorite games of all time. What I liked about Arx the most is its DIY feel. It’s a textbook case of cleverly and creatively using minimal assets and resources and frankensteining them into something special that stands out
19:36 That's my favorite brand of pop.
omg I forgot to watch a Grimbeard video. must watch now !
I replay this game regularly. Its lovely. I would like another game, but its off the table it seems
Got me full distracted by KOTOR IN OPENING
Don’t take this the wrong way, but the goblin at 18:02 kind of reminds me of my grandma.
I purchased on Ebay a gorgeous big box pc release of this game; I look forward to purchasing the Xbox Original Port next; I love collecting pivital moments in video game history such as thos game.
The Crypt was amazing. Probably the best dungeon in all RPG history.
yeah, those fucking red egg stones... and you had your footage. I spent a fucking week trying to find that stupid barrel where I had put that useless stone. Didn't mind it a bit, since that was my great journey of redemption and what's more important is friends I met along the way. But yeah, the game so indifferent to the player I find it charming.
Great video, really lights up my day with this goth shit. But can someone tell me the song that plays on the outro? Sick as hell.
I love your vids. You have the best taste.
Thx
I remember the magic system with the gestures was super cool, if a bit unwieldy. The memories are good. Good caves.
You know Legacy of Kain? Nice! Would like to see your video on the series one day.
Damn…haven’t thought about this game in a long ass time. I played the shit out of it way back when. I’m a year late for this video…😭
Once you learn to draw the runes and get the feel of HOW the game wants you to draw it then you can draw them while running and gunning and really feel like Dumbledorf fighting Voldemort
RIP Arkane.
Did you sample IDLES in the intro?? Good song, great channel, gargantuan goth energy. Mwah!
The only thing I want to hear you talk about more than Supernatural is King's Field.
"Akhbar" literally means "All powerful" in arabic ... you know, like "Alah akhbar" kind of thing
Damn, I resisted playing this game long enough now. Maybe it's time to change my mind...
A Grimbeard new video right in my birthday. Best gift so far!
