India is Facing a Youth Unemployment Crisis, Says Former Economic Advisor to Modi
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 вер 2024
- A steadily worsening youth unemployment rate could end up converting the country’s demographic dividend into a disaster and, if that happens, it could effectively tip the country into an abyss. This was the dismal and depressing scenario sketched out by Rathin Roy, a former member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and the director of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, speaking to Karan Thapar in an exclusive interview for The Wire.

You have to understand that at onion price Rs.150/kg no pakora seller can survive forget formal sector jobs.
Pakora sirf pyaz k nhi hota.
@@terracegardenkittens 😂😂😂
@News Forum High iq liberandu churan khane wale admi jara samjhoge, lagta hai tumne pyaz khana 2014 ke baad shuru kiya h, every year in winter there is a price rise in onion due to less supply and high demand. High iq wale librandu jara basic cheezo ko bhi jaano😂😂.
Pata nahi upar wala banda pyaz kaha se kharid raha h. Humare yaha rs100/kg rate h, aur agar sasta chahiye(Rs40) me toh government outlet me kuch ghante line me khada hona padega.
when a farmer sell its price is 5rs
@@terracegardenkittens Bhai pahle bhi onion prices par protest hote the abhi bhi protest honge. Stop taking sides please
The diplomatic and pusillanimous way in which Rathin Roy was dodging Karan's questions is ample proof of how pervasive the climate of fear is in India under the Modi govt.
dugyan true that
Very pussy environment
I come here to improve my vocabulary. Thanks Karan.
😯🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same here
Hamza Jamal learn some economics too 😎
What are the words used at 47:19 and and 47:31 ?
47:31 is kafkaesque
It’s a very informative interview. Thank you Karan. I have a question though. Why would a person from the South set up businesses in North-East for cheap labor when there is an identity problem in our culture? Can any government form a policy that can dictate how entrepreneurs view this problem, without violating human rights?
This guy is really scared of give any negative comment on govt.
I think he is being honest.
He has already payed price for being honest.
True, he seems to be diplomatic in his answers. But Karan is a sharp interviewer.
nrc ram mandir hindu muslim hei na..
unemployment bhulane k liy
Bhai 70 to 80% problem in our country is directly/indirectly related to overpopulation. But, no party in this country has guts to control overpopulation.
Hindu Muslim debate is nothing new, it is there since before partition of India.
NRC is meant to secure our borders, Refugee status/citizenship would be given on term of religious persecution in neighborhood islamic countries to non muslims. As the neighborhood countries are Islamic Republic. Minorities persecuted there on religious ground are non Muslim. Dont forget partition of India was based on two nation theory, where muslims asked for different state i.e pakistan and west pakistan(bangladesh)
What will do employment when a country border is not protected and there is instability and terrorism across the country. If will never have a sound sleep in your house untill the door of your house intact.
Ram Mandir issue is related to religious sentiment of whole North India. We are in a democracy, where changes are made through a procedure on the will of people.
nobody is doing anything to use the youth power to boost our country
@@Sandystatus991 thank people like desi cricket lover whose long comments only show their suicidal foolishness.
@@terracegardenkittens Some Muslims not all Muslims. We are not a Hindu country. We are not a Muslim country either.
to get to $5 trillion economy in 2024, India needs to have growth rate 12%, so there is no hope for that.
look at HK, when youth have no job, they will go to streets, be prepared for that.
TRUE
@Anurag Chakraborty that is on surface,
You're wrong, when youth don't have jobs they join it cell.
@@erepr1633 why do not you watch your own media, India youth has already started going on street, but for them the excuse (unlike in HK) is Citizenship Amendment Bill
no one got killed in HK's demonstration, but already 2 got killed in India's youth demonstration.
go figure that.
remember, in HK, the start of demonstration was also for the amendment of Extradition bill, not for "democracy or freedom"
@Anurag Chakraborty LOL you would be right if only HK wasn't voted 3rd on a list of the most democratic economies, way ahead of the land of milk and honey and cows. Just look it up on the web.
Brilliant.... this is how one should talk and debate ... this is how u find answers or sometimes u explore the possibilities and probabilities.... though mr roy evaded few questions brilliantly citing assumptions and hopes bt still it was wonderful.... and mr karan thapar u r too good ... no doubt a fool cant tolerate you for more thn 5 mints...
I am a 'Sarvahara'..
Wow, feels like a very big and complex word; feels like I AM something!
Karan - Awesome!!! This interview is just awesome.
Rathin Roy - Too good!! Wish you be our Finance Minister. Or atleast the RBI Governor.
Syed(Me) - Sad! India is not utilizing the such good minds.
One thing Bangladesh can learn from India's mistake is not to focus on a small segment which is the upper class for development rather inclusive growth will benefit everyone and the country as a whole.
Not only in youth employment also in every aspects we are facing crisis.
He did not say how rent-seeking has reduced under the present government. Politics of India is the prime example of rent-seeking in the name of Hindu vs Muslim.
REnt seeking: That's only work of any govt. and this govt.someway legalize it.
Karan thappar k sawal ka jawab dena bahut hi kam logon k bas ki baat hai. His questions are straight forward without any doubt.
Agar Amit shah, Rajnath Singh, Nirmala Sitharaman, Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi , Manmohan Singh, Priyanka Gandhi , Raj thakre etc...... in sab ka ek ek interview Karan Thappar se ho jaaye to inki aukaat saamne aa jaayegi.
The entrepreneurial community have no guidance, future saftey and social environment to support.
"Dosti bani rahe "unko bolana chahiye
Not only are we facing youth unemployment crisis but the salary has come down drastically for both the beginners and the experienced.
53:21 Classic moment - Karan looking at crew when Roy mentions contract labour needs better protection.
Looks like a scene in The Office 😂
He seems to slip away from all to the point questions. And then he blames them on the people, businesses, culture and entrepreneurs unwillingness.
No, I think what he is telling is totally true
The work culture of india is changed drastically if you compare with your parents and that is holding back.
I think the end of all this is going to be great.
@@kanwaldeeppuri8761 I don't completely deny what he says on some points eg: education, lopsided growth, nonetheless the way he twists and turns questions without taking a stance on many key issues makes me wonder most of the other arguments are just to disorient the viewers and that is strange.
Simple superb... This is call interview in true sense... Modia should learn from this
Modi learn ....an oxymoron
Dude that interview is still nightmare for modi
I have been following the wire and karan thapar's interview from many months now. They are very good and you guys should keep up with the work, but, in this interview especially, I felt there was no need from Karan thapar to keep that negative bias alive by repeating negative connotations with respect to government when Rathin Raoy was talking about form a more holistic perspective as a society etc. It was very obvious in this interview that personal biases were taking a lead rather than that of a interviewer's neutral stance. Hoping to watch more interesting more interviews.
Interesting and Gripping Interview. But Karan cut short Rathin while he was answering his question on affordable housing and the reasons of non availability of public land for Housing because of "vested interests "....the point didn't come up in the long interview.... I am inclined to suspect about the forthrightness of the interviewer..
What he has to say about lay off in various sectors? Young population still not in work, not looking for work...
did you even listen my man that's literally all they talked about.
Most pertinent point emerged that the growth benifits to 15 million ppl at top so consumption falling sharply in lower throng
I thnk gov missed at one thing badly and thts mgnrega ... the avg no of days were reduced to less thn 55 days and had they increased this thn this bottom strata could have got the money and consumption could have been higher... mind you aftr demo and gst many msme shut down and labour were out of market for many months ...
8:42 he tried evading the question and Karan Held him back 😃 😃
he admitted "I don’t like the question " 😃 😃😃 😃
as soon as I see Mr.karan, Idk why I hear "dosti bane rahe" in my mind.
Karan should be on Prime Time. The Wire should be on Prime Time on TV. Please make it happen..
Minutes 10-15 are the stuff of nightmares
Mr. Karan thappar let the man respond in full.
Modi want every youth to start with selling tea then setup pakoda manufacturing unit because by the they acquire expertise in above given discipline, the P S U'S would be sold out.😔😔😔
Pakoda bnega bt moolii ka
itna badiya interview h, itna acha content hai... Hindi mai kar lia kafo taaki masses samajh sake
Yahi problem hai yaar inki, Sab kuch aapas mein bol k khatam kar dete hai
That's why our politician back up Hindi Language .....to prevent masses from getting this nkind of stuff.....
It's not about Hindi, English. People need to have a certain level of Intellect to understand the above content. Now most people who have that level of intellect will probably understand English too. And most of those people probably don't understand Hindi.
How is society responsible for demonetisation and a complex gst which creates barriers for the poorer sections of society to become self employed ?
By still voting BJP 😂
Mastering the Art of Diplomacy through Listening to Bureaucrats
The sly art of ass-licking, basically.
A smile is a Diplomatic term for 'No'
😃
Over 1.3 billion and still growing. How do you expect everyone to be employed.
Karan, If you ask any question this guy he has no ans.but twist it.
All his diplomatic responses made sure that he is terrified to speak freely but again giving credit to himself as if he is not.
Karan Thapar ji please get Prof. Prabhat Patnaik on this show. I think he would provide some useful insights.Love these discussions. Excellent content.
The best interviewer in india
This is a classic example of speaking for nearly an hour and say nothing! Imagine he was advising PM in recent past.....
Watching a good interview after a long time.
This is the best Karan Thapar interview I have heard off late. Ratin Roy is cautious and unbiased despite his recent ousting from PM's economic council. Kudos!
PM modi needs to have more people like him onboard.
Excellent
This person will never talk anything negative about govt :) being very careful... For every challenge, he will say Govt is doing but lot more tobe done :)
Karan sir - pls grill further
He now does so openly, after quitting. Watch Dr. Roy's more recent interviews.
Reasons for unemployment are : (1) Population explosion. Very large population of young people in working age group (2) Large number of graduates, engineers, MBAs churned out every year. (3) Education syllabus is not conducive to requirements of Industry. 4) Manufacturing sector is down. 5) Young people only looking for office jobs or BPO jobs or call centre. They are not ready to work hard. (6) Lack of manufacturing industries in large scale.
India will never have full scale employment. Even USA which has less population and more businesses than India,
is not able to achieve full scale employment.
We need this in Hindi.. Bhakts cannot understand English.
Bhakts are not here. They are busy with cows ..........
The finance editor of India Today does a weekly interview in Hindi. Very informative. But no bhakts can understand. These morons are called bhakts for this very reason.....their stupidly transcends language barriers.
The host and the guest rightly agreed on one thing about the 'entrepreneur fear' of voicing criticisms. These group of people heavily benefited from their old ways of making money by mixing politics and money and are now finding difficult to adjust to new taxation laws. A person like Rahul Bajaj whose net worth is more than 4 billions dollars should be the last person worried about voicing his fears of doing business in stifling environment while travelling on his private jet.
He pays his taxes and earns his money like an honest man. Earning money isn't a crime.Mr. Bajaj has every right to convey what his feelings are. Morons like you won't understand that.
Amazing when Karan rephrased the question at 9:08. Modij chacha to ab tak pani pi ke nikal lete
He looked like a mouthpiece of bjp but yet with heavy heart outlined the miserable measure the govt have taken to destroy the nation
Karan at his savvy best!
Atleast Ratin Roy didn't leave the interview in the middle saying " Bas dosti bani rahe"
CONGRESS is innocent ... 🦧🦧🦧
All blame goes to BJP... 😝😝😝
Economic condition is day by day deteriorated , unemployment is one of the critical problem in our country , Growth rate continuously keeping decreasing . Next election again ruling party will be ruled 100% . people can't understand anything
India's working age population (age group between 16-64 years) is roughly 90 crores. With a labor force participation rate at 42%, isnt the 'sarvahara' category is 50 cr instead of 10 cr?
Why, I think this guy is more inclined towards govt....!
Mr.Roy is wicked smart.l
Very excellent discussion between two geniuses.....
Really really scary situation
Our ratios of police personnel to population and that of judges to population are very low compared to global standards. Plus police are highly overworked and underpaid and so they become puppets of the politicians and avoid filing FIRs. Police and judicial vacancies must be filled on a war footing and police reforms which are pending since decades be implemented. No govt wants to do this because then most of the politicians themselves will go behind bars. They want to control the process of truth and justice and want to keep all the security for themselves. High time we Indians wake up. A small part of the unemployment problem would be solved by inducting more youth into police, traffic police, and other law enforcement divisions. We must demand for the right things...
Great conversation, learnt a lot.
How could he not know what Dr. Manmohan singh was referring to?
He too is a coward to raise his voice
How can such an intelligent man still support n defend this government?? It is bewildering...
He and Dr Shamika Ravi, both the members of PMEAC (not that our PM would take any advise from them) were summarily booted out because they spoke against the Govt
they were FIRED by the govt...but because they are not biased and stick to reality, to you it seems like they are defending
excellent discussion, education needs to be the priority of the government if we have to become a developed economy. The cultural education can only come through it.
1) Medium and small scale industries were collapsed. Not at all friendly environment for setting up Industrial startups.
The guy is afraid of withstanding govt. Even after being a former advisor... What an interview....!!
BETTER DEFINE EMPLOYMENT IN MODI'S WAY BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE THE EASIEST WAY TO DEAL WITH THE PRESSING ISSUE OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
Is it Amit Shah and Modi agents of Pakistan to ruin and destroy India and Indian?
Something to be said how Mr. Thapar deconstructs diplomatic responses. *slow clap*
Thank you so much sir for enlightening us with knowledge sharing and by improving our thought process.
Thanks sir
India will split soon and Jesus will save India. Thank god I left sanatan dharma. Now, I'm proud Indian christian.
Why the importance of 5 trillion. As a country we should focus on putting a figure for pulling people out of poverty. This can be measured and the govt can be held accountable. We should be saying that every year we will take 20 million out of poverty
@Karan, you one said Dr. Rangarajan as opposed to just Rajan, and then said Ragunath as opposed to Raghuram. Do you seriously think his name is Ragunath Rangarajan?
''Growth is not happening since growth is absent, but it doesn't mean growth is not happening. And yes, growth is not happening ''
I'm scratching my head.
hardik s No idea, which side he is trying to present.
The Neo classical and classical economics all have fallen prey to his flip flops.
If you get any idea, do share.
Karan let the speaker speak more. You speak more than the speaker which makes the entire conversation incomplete. Many a time the speaker tries to add information you keep interrupting within 5 secs of them starting to answer that too after asking 15 - 20 sec long questions.
Sir now you are thinking to bring the change in education where birth rate has declined. What about those who are at age group 25 to 40 who will be constituting more than about half of the population
India has so many problems man, how are we going to fix all this?
A masterclass on the present state of economy through the opinions of various economists analyzed by another economists.
He is nalayak economist. This system of contract jobs is to be abolished. This has lead to huge dropout or pushed out unemployment.
Creating lot of backlog of unemployed people.
16:19 predicted the future with numbers.
Can’t we achieve the 5T dollar economy even just by doing nothing, allowing rupee to collapse to a level that even the existing size becomes equivalent to 5T dollar? Please do address my observation?
Good interview
Bloodi demontisation
fall of consumption - has it factored the inflation

Many 40+ age employees lost employment to benifit new graduates... That's the story. Don't know how many list lives or immigrated to other countries... How sad our country is...
why because all donky are on higher seats
Because train travel is not even one rupee a kilometer. Wow, Mr Roy is no nonsense, straight, direct and understand shit job problem of India. Calms some nerves.
Developing countries like India will always have problems lined up for them.
What is the 'caf-kais' word that they are speaking at around 47 minute?
Kafkaesque; like a situation described in a Franz Kafka novel.
One thing here The real problem of South Indian Businesses moving to north is the hostility of North Indians towards south Indians, But More importantly The Law and order situation in the North. South is well governed and doesn't have problems like Lynching of people, or kidnapping for ransom.
Why are the entrepreneurs in the north east not encouraged to start garment factories to make 400 INR shirts ? Why is the government not helping them ?
They don't have collateral to secure loans. Garment factories seems like a high risk business
I see this interview and then I see the members of parliament shouting and I wonder why are right mind set people not in the right place in this country. A country is a reflection of the quality of its parliament members. We do not need shouters. We need thinkers
Because people who vote will not understand what he is saying
He is a world class economist and thus has his pride and reputation. That's why he chose to honestly criticise this government on policies pursued by it even if it risked his job. I am no supporter of Modi but economy is too much a complex subject for laymen to discuss on. I see so stupid and mean comments here which is testimony to this.
how does north and east govt invite south entrepreneurs to come and invest in that state ; rather they want to call foreign investor who never comes
8 percent and increasing number of educated youth not willing to work, wow! French Resolution
But what will happen if you just write off the rest 950 million. And just assume that they are nonexistent-- like the current government thinks or usually rich in India thinks?
Educated people are speaking country crisis.but uneducated modi, shaw creating divisions in this country.we can divide the country by religion, caste wise.
Don't blame south indians for not investing in North and East. We worked hard to bring ourselves out of a lot of shit. Now that it's paying off you want a piece of our pie. We are already paying more taxes than the rest that we aren't even getting back that goes to some Bihari or Northeast people.😣
so in 1991 due to no choice we did libralisation and we thought we have cured the dieases but it was just steroide boost worked for first ten crore people and structural fault remains unchanged and now we are moving towards dead lock and in last stage trying to correct structural problem by affordable housing, ayushyaman bharat, kisan etc...
It one word the baloon we fastest growing economy from 1991 was not sustainable. Also mind set plays a big role in economy and since first time gdp growth falls some so calles economist started to say its recession etc....Sometimes i feel that some so called itelectuals are hoping for economy crisis just bcz they hate one man and their interests is not getting filled by gov.
Mr. Thappar, I don't know whether I am right or wrong, But this guy is totally hilarious 😊😊😊😊
He is living in an other world I guess!
