How “The Wire” started? Former editor of “The Hindu” - Siddharth Varadarajan and “DNA’ - Sidharth Bhatia started The Wire. Former editor of “Time Out Delhi”- Raghu Karnad is the contributing editor. The digital publication has tied up with news agencies like Press Trust of India (PTI) and Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) for content. One of the major driving forces behind launching the wire has been to be clear of corporate and advertiser pressure on content. “The Wire” Focus: The Wire will primarily focus on politics, economy, science, external affairs, law and culture. India is sovereign democratic country and we are proud of it. Whenever there is communal tension it needs to be highlighted and needs to be solved. But having section specifically for it highlights that most of it is targeted towards the Hindu right wing. And also to saffronize the govt and put them at a spot whenever there is tension. Just adding more politics to the situation. Interestingly I did not find a single article on the following issues and many more like this - - Kashmiri Pandit - Eid-e-Milad Triggers Rioting Against Hindus in West Bengal - Dhulagarh riots: West Bengal town on the boil after communal violence Point 3 The Founding editor has tiff with BJP in the past, also let’s not forget The Hindu where he was the editor. “The Hindu” primarily has communist views. Which is overly Left and believes in the concept of opposing anything that’s “Right” in nature (even against something of national interest)? In the past Swami has had a history with him so it’s logical that he will attack BJP in return.
That's an interesting discussion indeed. But as a layman, what i am feeling with spending or investing my money, which ofcourse called demand (its gap is the heart of this crisis) is cramped because of sense of insecurity and distrust towards government policy and untrustworthy finance and banking sector. Rising NPA's, Bankrupt Businesses, threatening control of government over RBI, sudden mergers of banks, crisis of institutions like IL&FS, job losses, recent incidences like PMC Bank and so on. While making any big expenditures or drawing big loans, i think more and more about savings; it makes me worry that if i take higher home loan or even car loan, would my job will be so secure to pay its installations? What if i lost my job? What if the interest rates again go up? What if another disaster like demonetisation hits up suddenly? Because this govt can do anything without even informing anything just like that, before i prepare myself for the situation. Tomorrow, if someone said that govt. will discontinue 2000 notes from tomorrow, i might believe that. Quite possible. Or suddenly decides by an order of RBI to shut the bank down i have account with.. what would i do? Or changes any HR Policy overnight which may get me fired off my job.. what to do? Or any sudden finance policy which may affect me bad.? That's why i am cutting my expenses and preserving my money for the hard time. As this is a common feeling in most of Indians right now, i believe.. is might be a reason of lowering demand in every sector.
Dear Karan Thapar, One thing I noticed after watching the interviewwasthatwhileyou were stern and looked seriously concerned at the state of economy, Shankar Acharya looked very cheerful and Joyous. It almost looked he wants the economy to tank and celebrate that his prediction has come true. I am very sure that he and his ilk have not. Suffered a wee bit and in fact may have accumulated more wealth as rewards for painting a gloomy picture.
When I like the program it certainly does not mean that I like the points being discussed. Rather it is the reverse. I would love to press the other button each time we discuss the scenario being discussed and the reasons that have created it. I certainly HATE it and wish that somehow the situation improves and our children get a better India 🇮🇳 to live in.
What is said is in sync with my day to day experience- 1) I complained to a number of policy makers on the way ruffians in political parties were "troubling" companies in the name of Mathadi law in Maharashtra. These gentlemen forwarded the emails wholesale to the local offices precisely in cahoots with the ruffians .... who promptly set us right. Police is of course of no help. 2) our income tax refunds are held up due some really silly objections from the department. They are deliberately doing this to avoid paying. 3) contract enforcement- cases going on .... where non paying parties violate law with impunity openly mocking us and saying - what will you - go file a case. To be fair , the nclt courts are better, compared to the usual . I don't see this slow down ending without substantial reform . But here's the problem , people in government don't seem to think reform is required ... also most of the smart people seem to be outside .... or have left the government. This points to a complete unwillingness to take any political cost. Reform seems only to be done when cost is to be pushed onto middle classes or companies. Be it compulsory csr or whatever . ... and our voters don't even think these are real issues !
You seems to be very insane person unable to fix reasons for this. OK, whenever a person is in office he has a lot of burdens and is in bound by many rules and conduct rules .And the worst is in our pseudo democracy their political masters dictate at every step. The worst is case of Gen.Bakshi , to get some political advantage he is loudly expressing his rhetoric but when he was in office he was just a sitting lame.duck.Same is case with all beurocrates ,judges, army personnel etc etc.....
I am sure mr Acharya s kids are either studying or settled very well somewhere in US or UK and he has a nice rental income from properties in Delhi , Mumbai or london. His smile and happiness and relaxed attitude is a sign . I can bet my guess is right . Let the gentleman answer and prove me wrong
The only thing we can do is pray to Lord Rama that give some time to our PM to sit in India and talk to some intelluctal people what to do with our economy
He is economist as dr manmohan, p. Chidambaram, dr amarta Sen, dr raghuram rajan but not pseudo economist like anil bokil, krishnamurti, and fm Sitaraman. Our pm does not know even common terms in finance.
Shanker Acharya is balanced, thoughtful and sensible. Karan Thapar on the other hand seems to have political agenda==run this government down rather than probe Shanker's view.
Here is a Good Example of how a Well doing economy can be destroyed by bringing in a Chai Wala. India had problems but it was doing 7% growth which has come down to less than 5%. Is this what democracy can do to a developing country ?
It's a situation like running away from one time bomb which is about to explode to another time bomb which will blow some time later. The end result either death in explosion or death by heart attach...
It is almost like screw driver economics - tinker here, tinker there, do something, roll back - it seems all so unprofessional. It appears as if one is doing something one does not know what needs to be done for sure. Another example is reducing corporate tax rates to 22% while personal income tax is at 33% plus indirect taxes they bear in addition to bribes & fines they have to pay. The Gujarati and Marwadi businessmen circumvent GST by dealing in cash even today. An individual has no incentive to pay that extra for his purchases after he has already paid many other direct, indirect and unofficial taxes he has pays.
The another question killing me is why in the first place elected public representatives has to be decision makers (at least in technical, scientific and financing sectors/ministries) irrespective of their IQ levels and inexperience? Why shouldn't they be kept in an advisory/consulting role over nominated/elected experienced core filed experts through a better system? We may take example of Dr. Manmohan Singh. He never fought a lok sabha election but came through Rajya Sabha. He was weak in political speech and would have never made it through elections. But having such a scholar as PM did benefit India a lot in Finance and Economy at least. We were worlds consistently fastest growing economy in his regime. We can't expect Ms. Sitharaman to be all rounder (at first, she need to accept that herself). Need to think upon it.

It's a structured slow down not cyclical. First thing the informal sector has to improve which will back the formal sector. Second the tax must be reduced. Third increasing the cash liquidity in market will help. Fourth Change in the fiscal policy which will make people to spend money but they wont spend until tax is reduced. The discount in the market won't work for the market as the business will make less profit or no profit in that case business cannot implement new technologies or new ideas which will increase the employees. Fifth government should not change the standards very frequently as to implement one standard it need more investment the recovery will be 5 to 10 years. Sixth thing elsctrical vehicles implementation is good but government must take care to have sufficient electricity before implementing it, if they implement with forcefully then it increases the scarcity of electric power.
Hello Karan, it's not the government to take next step, it's for the people to change the hopeless government focusing on worthless hindutva rather than the economy!! What are people waiting for? For the situation to become worst till average and below have no food on the table? Will they then realize at last minute that hindutva is not going to feed them?
Take account into farmers income and their purchase power getting lower as they cannot sell their cattle, because cattle buyers are afraid of lynching.Farmers also are definitely consumers.
Shankar Acharya is quite dodgy with his answers and hasn't really offered any viable solutions for pulling the economy out of the woods. Dr. Sen, earlier was more forthright and lucid in his prognosis. Despite Karan Thapar being at his searching best. Hoping to see Karan Thapar roping in Dr. Raghuram Rajan. And may be some industrialists in addition to the academics. There is however the fear that industrialists and corporate honchos in our country are too obsequious towards the present government and would not want to be seen on a platform like The Wire. Thank you, The Wire. You guys provide us the hope that independent journalism in our country is not altogether extinct.
The interviewer is asking too many loaded questions so it ends up looking as if he's asking his papa to clear his doubts. I would have preferred to see Mr. Shankar speak more and be free to make up his mind instead of having to agree or disagree with the opinion of Mr. Karan. Mr. Shankar is the expert, not Karan. The interviewer is there to prompt the interviewee, manage the time, ask for clarification, and anticipate what the viewer wants to know. You can press him more on some issues, but not to the point where the other is silently sitting there nodding his head in agreement while Karan does most the talking. I want to hear Karan's wisdom please. Keep that in mind for future episodes. Thanks
Thank you The Wire for persisting with this topic over the days. We need to enlighten the public with facts that are going to ruin our country and the youth who are bding carried away with the false narrative of the main stream media
It is time out situation for the govt to provide even a feeble boost to the economy. Packages distribution will just be a wastage of money. The only alternative for the govt now left is that not worrying about the fiscal deficit for the moment and spend as much it can to create employment.
For fun of it, i was analysing some of the comments, looks like Muslims are seriously against Mr. Modi (though I did not read all such comments, was a sample check), it is sheer hatred. It is "all religion" in thier minds. Muslims youths and learned ones among them should not straight jacket themselves like this. They should join the mainstream thinking process, some redicule and some appreciation provides a fairer perspective. The interview was good and enlightening, but Mr. Acharya was smarter at many places, he did end up by saying "it is your words" or something on same lines - jayaraman ganapathi
De monetization killed the economy. GST should be 10%. Reason being earlier Excise was paid by companies having turnover of 5 crores. Now all companies are paying GST regardless of turnover

Point 3
The Founding editor has tiff with BJP in the past, also let’s not forget The Hindu where he was the editor. “The Hindu” primarily has communist views. Which is overly Left and believes in the concept of opposing anything that’s “Right” in nature (even against something of national interest)? In the past Swami has had a history with him so it’s logical that he will attack BJP in return.
Excellent discussion . Karan ji you are great.
I remember one interview in which Karan Thapar interviewed Modi. In the middle, modi drank a cup of water and ran away.

Very enriching to hear great minds talk
Need more interviews like on a regular basis as the sold godi media will never show us the true picture
Exports alone won't help, understand we are a big consumption economy, we can have a big boost by reducing income tax till 10lacs to 5-10 percent
The Wire Mr Karan Thapar could you please invite Mr Raghuram Rajan Ex RBI Chief in your discussions panel
"DOSTI BANI RAHE" 😂😂
Dear Karan Thapar,
One thing I noticed after watching the interviewwasthatwhileyou were stern and looked seriously concerned at the state of economy, Shankar Acharya looked very cheerful and Joyous.

We are enjoying the ache din
As per Sambit patra
“ It’s all becoz of Nehru .... Pakistan and Sonia ghandi ....🤦♀️”
😀😃😄😁😆😅😂🤣
What is said is in sync with my day to day experience-
1) I complained to a number of policy makers on the way ruffians in political parties were "troubling" companies in the name of Mathadi law in Maharashtra.
Great to hear an on the ground experience.
Why do only "FORMER" govt Dept officials begin singing the truth and talk candidly once out of office ? It doesn't make any difference then, right ?
You seems to be very insane person unable to fix reasons for this. OK, whenever a person is in office he has a lot of burdens and is in bound by many rules and conduct rules .And the worst is in our pseudo democracy their political masters dictate at every step. The worst is case of Gen.Bakshi , to get some political advantage he is loudly expressing his rhetoric but when he was in office he was just a sitting lame.duck.Same is case with all beurocrates ,judges, army personnel etc etc.....
People from all walk of life have no trust on this lunatic government.
I can’t understand the glee on the ‘expert’s’ face. He seems to be excited at the prospects. Very Chidambaram-like.
Best interviewer....KARAN THAPAR...talks on facts
He would not even know that how many zeroes are there in trillion.
He knows chuthianomics
He is a plastic surgeon & an expert in cloud radar defence
Real picture given by Mr Acharya..
It is very common. Pro's and Con's are common like supporters and haters.
Whatever may be the government, ultimately people have to bring it back.
True journalism... salute... love from nagaland
We will export our ache din to all countries. So that they also be happy
Shanker Acharya is balanced, thoughtful and sensible. Karan Thapar on the other hand seems to have political agenda==run this government down rather than probe Shanker's view.
Best program sir,
Dear Karan,
Could you pls invite n interview Mr. Modi?
Thanks,
Love your step Mr. Karan
Here is a Good Example of how a Well doing economy can be destroyed by bringing in a Chai Wala. India had problems but it was doing 7% growth which has come down to less than 5%. Is this what democracy can do to a developing country ?
Very well said Sir 👏🏻
Looking forward to watch Arun Kumar
Because govt knows that majority are not educated to understand the meaning of economy so wont protest.
I totally agree with your version regarding the worse position of the Nation economic condition gone to zero by the illegal acts of the BJP government. Mr Manmohan Singh Ex Hon.Prime minister was very good for the Nation and general public as a qualified and experienced economist. If the suggestion might have been taken from Mr Amritya Sen it could have been developed and resolved our country Bharat varsha economic growth. The imposement of Taxes like Vat Cess GST and Super charge tax Property tax and Additional fuel exise duty tax which is not accepted and tolerated at any cost by the public of India Bharat varsha. Recently Traffic Rule act 2019 illegally imposed by the Central government BJP by 250 percent extraimposed to harrash the public middle class and retired persons
Why the facilities and salary of the Nation leaders and ministers like canteen subsidy Gas subsidy 4 to 5 times Pension scheme is not stopped to strengthen the Nation economic condition it is not understood? The highly qualified persons should be given the post of Prime minister of India Bharat varsha which we demand honestly. Our military forces and paramilitary forces NDRF force are doing very good job and serving the Nation at mountain minus 30 degrees centrigate temperature and maintaining peace and harmony should be honoured with multi Crores salute. We want a strong Bharat varsha shining and Ujjawal Bharat varsha with solid action as planned by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose ICS and freedom fighter , Jay Hind Jay Bharat varsha Vande Mataram Inqualab Zindabad Jay Jawan Jay Kisan and Jay Vigyan. DPGANGULY Bhilai Chastisgarh
Thank you Sir for considering my suggestion, We the Nation general public strongly protest against the action of the BJP government because many types of illegal activities being created with disaster. We should support AAP party CM Mr Arvind Kejariwal highly qualified and decent potential and Mr Manmohan Singh Ex Hon.Prime minister who can develop Bharat varsha with solid action
Jay Hind Jay Bharat varsha Vande Mataram Inqualab Zindabad
I would say we need to have an assessment of our current state of economy by the Ex-Governor of RBI Raghuram Rajan. When economy is in a state of slump the GOI needs to call a person of capacity in the field irrespective of political affiliation or person like/dislike.
This interview and the Pronab Roy interview were eye-opener. Genuine and unbiased opinion on the economic fall out. If possible bring in Arvind Subramanian in the next installment.
tomorrow I guess modi will say we don't have money to make ram temple in Ayodhya , you know economic slowdown , oil spill in soudi Arabia , we made the statue of sardar Patel , but we are unable to recover from economic slowdown .
Why inserting temple here
लौड़ौ। कांग्रेस से क्या चाहते हो। घोटाले।
Sri Lanka has build a tower taller than Patel statue but hindu rashtar extremists media don't want Indians to know that because it would shame narender ram modi

@Samarjeet Dwibedy Indian economy is going down & you seems to have Celebrating it.. What kind of joy you get out of it
Employment is not only problem of centre it is also of state government and also all Indians. All Indians want white collar and govt job.
When climate change is the major issues
What about economic slowdown.
Can you improve the audio quality on these videos please?
It's sometimes really hard to understand what they are saying and the high pitch background noises and spit sounds are irritating.
Karan Thapar is great ,,,,,
🇮🇳
On coming october first week , the GDP may go below 5% ....real economic experts assume in debates
Karan Thapar 👍👍👍👍
Hello Karan, it's not the government to take next step, it's for the people to change the hopeless government focusing on worthless hindutva rather than the economy!!
What are people waiting for? For the situation to become worst till average and below have no food on the table? Will they then realize at last minute that hindutva is not going to feed them?
This is mistake which minorities need to understand if you hit modi on hindutva.. You will be looser.... This is hindu country.
Take account into farmers income and their purchase power getting lower as they cannot sell their cattle, because cattle buyers are afraid of lynching.Farmers also are definitely consumers.
Kudos to Karan Thapar! When all the journos are wagging their tails for the money he’s one of a handful with integrity.
Karan, appreciate your GST and Demonetisation phobia .. come on be out of it..
Many Experts blame global economy for the decline in growth. But no anchor asked, how global economy affected our economy and how much.
Good
We are all proud a chaiwalla is now a prime minister, but these are consequences. The first chaiwalla in the world would probably have done better
Thanks
Keep up wire...

Please provide the transcript
De monetization killed the economy. GST should be 10%. Reason being earlier Excise was paid by companies having turnover of 5 crores. Now all companies are paying GST regardless of turnover
We want karan thapar back to the TV
Playing the violins on the deck of sinking titanic is what Mr Acharya is suggesting. What noone wants to say is the emperor has stripped us all - none of us have any clothes !!
remembering narendra modi asking for water when Karan Thapar attempted a real interview.
Very well said...the only data increasing is of ' unemployment '
If labor participation rate is down. Maybe more enterpreneur are being built in india. Thats nthg to worry about if that is true. Also world growth is slowing down which means india is not alone but much better than other countries. If we compare to historical growth figures than my oh my mr prof did a huge mistake by not understanding that population growth in 1970 got the 8% gdp growth. Where is the population growth now? Basically its a worldS problem not only india in isolation.
Acharya should say economic decline started when Modi kicked Thapar out of the interview right then, and save us all the pain.
Simple , All this is happening because Nehru was born here. Thanks to 56" who is is wrestling with it to decimate it.
Kindly do one programme on NMART LOOTERA COMPANY WHO IS FROM GUJURAT... NO MEDIA FOCUS THAT COMPANY
