Ford 460 Rear Main Seal Problems with Fel Pro!

- Showing you why you shouldn't buy Fel Pro rear main seals for a Ford 429/460. They are way out of spec. Stick with Victor or genuine Ford rear main seals if you want your engine to be leak free!
Here is the link for the current Mahle part number for the rubber 460 rear main seal.

Thanks for the info. I have a terrible oil leak on mine( I just rebuilt the engine and used a Felpro).
I hate to hear that. Fel Pro used to be good to use but I’ve had a lot of problems out of them in the past few years. Their quality control has went down the tubes.
Same mishap here👎🏼
We used a Mc Cord gasket set on a 69 351w and they sealed well 😊
I really like McCord gaskets and try to find them when I need gaskets.
usted dice que el el 351w sirve para el motor ford 460?
The MAHLE JV618 seal is made by Felpro. I ordered 2 from 2 different suppliers, and it says felpro right on the seal. Installed it
It's getting confusing with Mahle now. What was the Victor Reinz JV618 is now the Mahle JV618 and the Victor has gotten a different number it seems. It seems they are doing that with all of their gaskets now.
I’m glad you made this video. I ordered a mahle jv618 rear main and it actually measure 1/8 of an inch protrusion on both the block and the cap. Where did you get the victor reinz rear main from? I’m really glad I checked this.
Believe it or not I had also ordered a Mahle rear main seal and when I looked closely at the seal it was a Fel Pro in a Mahle package! I usually get my Mccord and Victor gaskets from Ebay.
@@BlackLabGarage good to know thanks!
@@Samwise71999 You're welcome! If you have a Ford dealer close to you, I have had good results using the original Ford rear main seals also.
@@BlackLabGarage I totally forgot about just asking the dealer. I’ve order my second seal to try and find one close to the right crush, I’ll definitely be visiting the dealer after this one comes in. I can’t believe how different they all are and when everyone says they just stick them in and never had a leak I’m really starting to doubt that is true.
cada vez que cambio dicho sello, a los dos dias comienza a botar aceite, al punto de dos litros diarios. no consigo la solución, he pensado en cambiar el motor.
What brand of seal are you using?
@@BlackLabGarage felpro
@@TheBebesito310 You need to change that seal. You've got too much clearance. You and lots of other people have the same problem using Fel Pro rear main seals for the Ford 460.
@@BlackLabGarage i have changed two generic seals, tumbled the crankshaft twice, have it rectified to fill an alleged missing, last mounted this felpro seal and it doesnt work either, i am recommended to change the crankshaft or install rope seals, i am selling the engine already I'm about to surrender.
@@TheBebesito310 What year is the block and crank?
If you don't know how to install a rear main seal just say so. No need to trash Fel-Pro. Offset the seal in the block and cap then install the cap. Not that hard.
Actually you just proved that you don’t know how to install a rear main seal. It doesn’t matter if you offset the gaps of the seal. That isn’t the problem. The seals are too long and when the ends butt together it will not let you get the proper crush around the crankshaft so they leak. Cut a hula hoop into two pieces. Then stand in the middle of it. Turn the gaps however you want to. Does that make it get any tighter on you? Nope. Still the same diameter. If Fel Pro made their seal in spec then I wouldn’t have to bash them. Ford seals and Victor Reinz seals don’t have this problem because they are made to spec.
McCord or Victor? Be nice if you could post a link for correct part
McCord ended up getting bought out by Mahle who also owns Victor Reinz. Only place to find McCord is by searching Ebay. But I have bought McCord and Victor Reinz and they were both the same seal in different boxes but had the Ford part numbers on them. Victor supplies a lot of OEM gaskets to manufacturers. I posted a link above to the Victor rubber rear main seal.
@@BlackLabGarage Thank you for posting this part. Do you have any experience with the john kaase racing one piece seal for BBF? Seems like it may be another solution to a known issue. I was wondering if any BBF owners with a problem rear main leak had their rear crank journal checked for roundness? A qualified machine shop would have to determine that a crank was true, (not oval) and have to repair a crankshaft that was not perfectly round and broght back to specs.
@@dewholdingsllc1050 I have not used his seal but I wouldn't hesitate to use one of them. Kaase knows his BBF stuff probably better than anyone else. I have known of people that have used the Fel Pro rear main seal on brand new crankshafts and still had oil pouring out of the rear because of there being too much gap between the seal and the crank with the Fel Pro's. So it isn't just a used out of round crankshaft problem.
@@BlackLabGarage Okay thank you for your endorsement. Maybe a good video subject for your channel to test the Kaase one piece seal out? And it is good to know there are other options for known fel pro quality control issues. Victor Reinz, or McCord or Kaase. I wonder if FP quality control lacks because of outsourcing manufacture? A copy of a copy of a copy.
@@dewholdingsllc1050I need to find that box and see where the Fel Pro is made at? But I can tell you that Fel Pro is outsourcing stuff. I bought two head gaskets for a 460 a while back and one of them was a Victor Reinz in the Fel Pro package!
Where do I get that McCord seal at ?
I usually find them on ebay
Cut fit ! That's why they put gauge stop in package .read instructions!😢
Cant cut that much off. You would be into the metal if you cut that much off. Buy a good seal and you don't have this problem
@@BlackLabGarage set seal in groove use gauge to set even with cap cut only one even with cap looking for.001 crush as wears will keep seal on shaft.
Different seals are made different materials.
I tried that and that's how I know I was into the steel. But the OEM seal didn't have that problem. Only the Fel Pro did.@@stephenhans189
I learned the hard way with my vq35de engine and used the felpro…..never again thank you for the video
You're welcome. I try to avoid Fel Pro if possible now.
The Fel Pro is a different material and the extend an extra .015 because they are INTENDED TO COMPRESS within itself. It’s designed that way!
Call them up (800-325-8886 options 2, 2), give them the part number and they will tell you so.
Similar thing with the PTFE rear main seal gaskets. People usually lubricate them (thinking it’s the older design) with a little bit of oil before they put them on but the oil will defeat the sealing properties because that PTFE gasket has to go on 100% dry.
There are chemicals imbedded in that particular gasket that when the friction begins on the crankshaft, the friction helps forms a better seal and they guarantee no leaks.
They may say that, but the seal can't compress that much. That's a metal rod in each half of the seal and they butt together. Lot's of people have had troubles with 429/460 rear main seal from Fel Pro not having enough crush to the crank and oil pours out of them.
