Thanks man. My 460 pours oil when I run it. I'm glad you showed about off setting the seal a little, I would have installed it flush with the metal.

The best advise I could give you for this would be to join the reincarnation-automotive website. Best $30 I ever spent and they specialize in 460 builds. Products aside the info he provides is invaluable if your working on a build. Other than that I haven't messed with my timing so I can't really answer the question.

You are supposed to roll the seal on the engine block 3/8" and the cap there on the opposite side the same thing 3/8" so you dont have any leaks, the joints will be hidden and as a little bit of rtv on the joints.

NEVER trim the ends of the seal! Part of the reason it leaked is that the bearing shell is completely worn out. You should never see bronze showing on an engine bearing. Stagger the ends like the book says, replace the worn bearings and no problems.

On my 429 I just spun it in so the two meeting points on the seal weren't where the oil pan hits it. No leaks

I just did this last night on my BBF 460 rebuild. Glad to see I put mine in correctly. Thanks for the video.
How about setting the timing? I haven't installed the CAM and timing chain. How do I preset for 12 degrees of initial timing?

Good info, but, what about the other half?

I am confused in the beginning you were showing the overhang with a feeler gauge and then after all that you ended up rotating the seal to offset three eights of an inch so what was the point in the beginning using the feeler gauge I’m very confused

To answer a 3 year old question, the first is to measure the crush depth. The second time it is set to where it won't leak. If you did this with a seal that was too long, it would crush incorrectly and still leak, even if rotated.

Did you remove the engine or transmission to change the rear main seal?

    • @jamesblantz6924

Nope. Both were still in the truck I believe. Was a long time ago so can't remember if I put a jack on the transmission or not.

Brother, did you ever have problems after this from the engine? Your main bearings are SHOT. Mine are similar, did you have issues putting it back together this way?
