- Out of any controller, The Novation Launch Control XL is THE MOST flexible, powerful one I have ever used. From just this alone, I am able to run all of my keys, and track sounds, simultaneously.

I didn't get if you need to map it while the editor is opened, otherwise how do I know the cc values of stuff in ableton? I would like to set a user template in order to map some of my favorite controls and have them always available on the xl control! Thanks
Once you have your CC values set you don’t need the editor open. You can check the name of the mapped value by opening the browser on the left hand side. Mappings are only good for one set though. If you start a new set you’ll need to re map (using this method) if you use it in factory mode the controls are pre mapped.
@@LiveKeyboardist so I can't save a custom mapping in the user mode on the xl and have it always avilable? What are the function save and load in the editor stand for then? It's a lil confusing!
I understand why you’re confused. In factory mode, the launch control communicates with ableton and tells it which parameters individual knobs will control. This is done with a script that is built in to the controller and ableton. In user mode, the launch control is a blank slate. So you can use the novation software to change what messages are being sent, like for example, a know sending a CC message 100, or 101. And that can be saved so every time you enter user mode, it sends the same signal. Ableton however won’t know what to do with that signal unless you have mapped it in an individual set. So if you open a set with your mappings, you are good to go. But otherwise? While ableton will receive the saved messages from the launch control, it won’t know what he messages mean until you map it. Let me know if all that makes sense.
@@LiveKeyboardist yes it makes sense! I just don't understand how to set my template with the editor!!! It would be helpful if you make a video showing how to make a template in order to have it always ready in the user mode! For instance a user template to control session overdub, transport controls etc! Would be very useful! There's no info at all about the editor on the net! Thanks anyway for your answers

Hi. Regarding the automation querie. I’m not using ableton I’m using mixcraft 9 so if I want to put automation to a certain part of a track ie volume can I use one of the sliders to insert the volume while the track is playing
philip panico I don’t know much about mixcraft, but what you are asking is 100% possible in ableton, so my guess is that it is doable in Mixcraft as well. You’ll need to set up a mapping to make it work. But that is a pretty basic feature that is possible in any program that allows for a midi controller. Let me know if you get it working. Would love to hear about your progress.
Any solution to the fact that Novation's editor won't open in Mac OS Catalina? Can't apply template - however, does that file save on the device memory itself? I have an older laptop I could load it on...
Unfortunately, they haven’t made a version compatible with Catalina yet. That being said, it does save on the device memory, so if you have an older laptop that will do the trick
You can use the Components website to edit the device on a Mac components.novationmusic.com/
what haappens if you have the midis mapped and saved, then close out of that porject and open it with the faders in differenet positions? does it mess up the volume you already had set when you left the track?
open preferences - 3rd tab midi... and check out the 'takeover mode' dropdown menu

If you enter factory mode I believe it will show you what you are controlling. But the XL won’t launch tracks in factory mode.

Great video but it is IMPOSSIBLE to hear what you're saying when you have the music playing... that click track is painful. Any chance you could do a revised video? Thanks!
Hey Chris. Thanks for watching. Yeah, the audio for some of these is rough. I’ve got a new set up for audio now that fixes this problem. More videos of running tracks to come this year
ive been struggling to open this ableton template file. i obviously dont ever use them. once i have the sys template file downloaded how to do open it in ableton? where is my ableton template folder anyway? lol.
So the template is actually for the Novation Launch Control Xl Controller. If you are using that piece of hardware, you can open the template file from within the novation launch control XL editor.
