Novation LCXL gives you total control of Ableton Live whether producing or performing live.
Great video. Just trying to work out, how did you set the send select arrows to move up and down in the session view and the buttons to launch clips? Thanks
Thanks for the Video! I seeing to get one very soon :)
Chris! Bought one of these bad boys after seeing you at Production Room in Leeds. Any news on Novation implementing a colourblind mode for us optically-challenged folk?
It's amazing how music (or at least the successful company Novation) departs from the common trend in content creation: most software in general is celebrating minimizing interfaces, in favor of the agility of graphical interfaces. Music production, however, still revolves heavily around nuanced touch. Novation must be really hitting the nail on the head with the abilities of their controllers.
Thanks for the demo. For me it was very helpful.
What for factory-templates exactly comes with the launch control XL?
I saw only one in the video...
Hi +ELECTROSQUASH thank you for your comment. The Novation Launch Control XL comes bundled with Ableton Live Lite and a full run down of the VSTs can be found here: www.ableton.com/en/products/live-lite/features/ If you did want to look at other sound samples etc then you can upgrade your version of Ableton Live or look to alternate companies for samples. Whilst we hope this helps, please let us know if there is anything else we can help with in the meanwhile.
Kind regards,
Gear4music.
very good video!
Why does Novation not build in endless/infinite rotary knobs that can pick-up a parameter by themselves like Behringer (cheap) or Akai (with the higher priced stuff) do? Changing a parameter and then changing the knob-function, rotating it again and going back to the original parameter means you’ll sooner or later get literally LOST in a live-set where a controller should actually help you to avoid looking at the screen.
+s4ffcl Good Question, I would also like to know this, Like for instance the way the Novation remote 25 used to work with ableton without any of the automap stuff, 8 Knobs was perfect for ableton.
What controllor works like this these days?
endless/infinite rotary knobs rule...
I prefer the old school 'pots', but then I use my ableton while playing the guitar amongst other things. I find it easier to look at the knob and see exactly at what level my sends are, to see how much more 'headroom' I have left.
I can imagine that it'd be a pain in the ass to use this when controlling lots of different effects and switching between them tho..
Because money. Infinite rotary encoders cost more than basic pots so they would have to charge even more for their already ludicrously priced controllers.
Is this easily mappable for Traktor Pro? Looking for a new controller without jog wheels & this is looks to be an excellent possibility. Any feedback regarding Traktor suitability would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
Is it more complicated or easier to use than it looks?
hello,
if i have like more than 12 or max 24 channels in a project… n i want to control all channels through these 8 faders… how z it possible here? can u explain it… really looking to buy it.
great video! what did you midi map in ableton for the up and down page navigation? I'm having a difficult time with this.
Hello Armend,
To get an answer from the experts, we recommend you send Focusrite an email at sales@focusrite.com . We hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Gear4music
How do you turn on n off the highlighted device ?
is it possible to map it nd use on my mainstage patch using faders, knobs and buttons?
Great review, could this only be used for Abelton or can be used a generic midi controller?
+SoulSheIS You'll have to map the controller CC to the knobs and sliders and buttons yourself to use it on your VSTs and DAW. Kind of a pain to say the least. I bought the smaller version the Launch Control, and it's a compact and solid piece of kit but no one has yet to make the perfect controller. I will either return it for this XL or get either the Akai MPK or the Akai Advanced Pro series small keyboards with VIP software. Thinking this is the way to go.
I'm assuming it has integral performance capture capability.
I really would like to see a 16 channel + master controler. Also 4 rotary knobs rows for send fx + PAN row of rotary knobs.(5 rows in total) A small display underneath every channel and under every rotary knob to see exactly what am I tweaking. ( just like the NI KONTROL S) I would call it Novation Launch Control XXL And I would pay a price of 300€ since Novation Launch Control XL is a bit to small to decide to buy it. :/
+Gear4music how did you map the up and down arrows to move up and down in the session view at 5:15?
Hello,
In this instance we recommend Novation so that you can get a more definitive answer. You can contact them on
1 (310) 322-5500. We hope this helps!
Kind regards,
Gear4music
Thanks for your video Looks great
However i wont be using my laptop, i only use ipad now
So would i be able to use this with launchpad app, and remixlive app?
Hello Mick,
Thank you for the message. Yes this is correct!
Kind regards,
Gear4music
Is this better than the APC 40
The Novation Launch Control XL controller for ***** Live has arrived in stock!
In case you missed it, here's our exclusive demo. You can get your hands on one here: bit.ly/1jTQcVx
in the launch control xl can u jump from channels 1-8 to 9-16 on the track select? videos ive seen there are only 8 channels
Mick Finucane Yes , you can do that .
+Gear4music Can you program control of the metronome?
+Thomas Coolberth Yep :)
would work for me if it werent fixed knobs but encoders. if youre playing live its annyoing to always move the pots back to 0 or whatever value is needed.
also why is it always pan as default? maybe im doing something wrong but i NEVER need a quick access to pan control! i am a huge fan of novation but someday i think i have to build my own controller - for example why is the launchpad not being shipped with a template like launchpad95 - which is fantastic and really really expands the functionality of the device by 500% ;)
anyways, thanks for the video and keep up the good work!
rubyruby777 or you could use the user mode
Hi, what if i wanna work with 16, 24, 32 ch? Is it possibly to transpose in a simple way the 8 ch controls from 1-8 to 9-16 or to 17-24 or 24-32 for example..? Thanks
I have seen a No for this question and boy am I disappointed. Otherwise it would be a great controller, perfect to line up beneath my launchpad.
I have bookmarked a link for a script that might help...do a search on Native Kontrol Link/Arsenal. It costs like $10.
I have the same speakers!!!!
I know these aren't motorized faders so what happens for example if I load up a track with the levels all set low and the XL happens to have all the faders up high will the tracks volume jump when I start moving a fader? How does it work if there is volume automation on a track, will the automation override what I do on at the fader? Thanks
Hi there,
Depending on what you're using there may be the chance that the fader will not affect the volume or whatever parameter until it has reached the value its controlling. We hope this helps!
Can I map the knobs/sliders to various parameters of a synth?
Hi Enigmatic Sensations,
Yes you can achieve this with the Novation Launch Control XL. Whilst we hope this helps if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Kind regards,
Gear4music
thanks for the response!
I want to use the faders in an Ableton DJ template for quick effects, but i have no idea if they will slide easily enough. How is the "speed" of the faders as they are precision faders?
Hi Bella,
Would you be able to confirm whether you a referring to a controller or Ableton itself?
Kind regards,
Gear4music
+Gear4music I'm so sorry for not being more specific 😕
Yes I was referring to the controller itself!
Hello Bella
The Faders on the controller are quite precise from looking on the manufacturer website. We hope that helps.
Many Thanks
Gear4music
Would you recommend this for a non-abelton user who wants to use full custom mapping for each knob?
Hello Brian,
Yes, it's exceptionally versatile and is well adapted to be used with any DAW.
Kind regards,
Gear4music
Gear4music Thanks alot. Keep up the good videos!
Would this work with Cubase elements?
Hi there,
Yes this would work!
Hello I would like to use the launch conrol with tractor, have a xone k2 with sound card. Do you need a soundcard for the launch control? Or could I run it over the xone k2?
Hello there,
You would need a sound card to use the Launch Control on its own but if the xone k2 has a sound card you can use the launch control with it. We hope this helps!
Kind regards,
Gear4music
thx
can you map the knobs to any parameters in ableton? could I map the buttons on the bottom as on/off for an effect in a way that the light represents on or off?
Hello there,
Thanks for the message. Yes you would be able to map all of the parameters to all the knobs in Ableton no problem. We hope this helps!
Kind regards,
Gear4music
thanks for the response! what about the buttons on the bottom, can they be used as on/off together with the light?
Hello,
Yes this should be possible.
Kind regards,
Gear4music
Is this thing only suitable for the live performances? I wonder if it can record and control the effects via automation clips in real time (FL studio). If that's the case, i would totally purchase it!
+astrohermit You could still technically use it in a studio sense, however, you would need to map the MIDI controller to Fruity Loops so that you got the most out of the MIDI controller. It does work seamlessly with Ableton Live. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help with in the meanwhile.
+Gear4music thanks for your reply! Haven't purchased it yet, but I think I will.
Do you know why pickup don't work when changing from user to factory mode? Why does it jump? It works well when moving between sends and tracks but not between user modes?
Hi +Pablo Arias - in relation to the Novation Launch Control XL, how do you mean by pickup please? We look forward to your response.
Kind regards,
Gear4music.
+Gear4music Hello Gear4Music! I refer to the pickup mode in Ableton which allows Ableton to wait until the physical value of the knob (or fader) reaches the numerical value inside Ableton to take control of the parameter.
Hi +Pablo Arias in the factory mode have you checked the mapping of the Control XL? It may not be set up the same. Please can you confirm?
+Gear4music Hello, and thx for the answer, I actually contacted novation support for this bug and they told me that they are aware of it but that they'll have to wait for a future version of live to fix it...
do you think the launch control xl will work perfectly in Logic Pro X?????? please help
Amar Asyraf Hi Amar, yes it should be absolutely fine. You would just need to map the controls with Logic so that it operated accordingly. Hope this helps!
how about all the plugins such as midi fx ,instrument, audio effects .. can it able to control them perfectly? cuz i've read some thread says the knobs can only control the pan .. sorry for my bad english
Amar Asyraf What fx, instruments etc are you using please?
I mean any plugins like controlling the effects such as verb, arpegiator, etc,etc.. logic pro x
Amar Asyraf Yep, should be absolutely fine :)
No transport buttons?! :-(
Better off (and cheaper) with standard LaunchControl + Korg NanoKontrol 2
does it come with ableton
Hi +Mr.Music we can confirm that it does come with a version of Ableton Live Lite :)
Hiii... How do you keep the lit LEDs of the buttons ? my control xl not lit when tightening
Hi +Kelvin oliveira please can you let us know in more detail the problem experienced and when this is happening during use? We look forward to your response.
how did u map the user mode??
Alexandre Drobac which DAW are you using please?
What's DAW?
A DAW is a digital audio workstation or your music recording software. Some have different ways to map MIDI so we were just wondering which software you have so we can be accurate with our response. Thank you for your comments :)
I use Ableton Live 9.
So?
Thing needs 16 faders, not 8..how many songs you written recently with 8 tracks. At the very least it needs a toggle switch so you can use the 8 faders for min 16 tracks..otherwise it's not really gonna be much of a mixer
Maybe you can toggle to use 16 tracks but I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere,,
If you need 16 faders, then buy something with 16 faders.
where the hell would they fit 16 lol
the thing is already called XL
T4C Stop being over agressive. You're making a fool of yourself especially for your age, this is a producer community not the regular youtube hater one. You can chill, don't worry. And yes, this gear is kinda useless if you asked me.
The music in these is always God-aweful but I have to watch them anyways :(
Looks wayyyyy to fiddley for live use on a dark and busy stage, I'll stick with APC 40.
This would be a seamless integration with Ableton if not for ONE annoying omission...no 'red box' integration to jump to the next 8 tracks. I always use several different 8-track blocks in my sets and without the red box support it is going to be annoying as hell to keep this lined up with my launchpad.
Come on, Novation, you can do better than this.
