Welcome to the Wool Needles Hands Knitting Midweek Ramble, a new video format I’m introducing to the channel. It’s a place for me to ramble about other knitting//fiber//craft-related topics that just don’t make it onto the podcast episodes (usually for the sake of brevity).

I just bought Feederbrook Farm yarn at Rhinebeck and I can confirm, it is LOVELY!! It's my first time buying marled yarn like this, and I can't wait to use it. You don't see these yarns crocheted too often, so it should be a fun challenge 😀
Omg! Two of my favorite channels, together! This just made my night!
Hi Toni! lol, repeated the above poster…my two favorite fiber channels in one!!
Tayler, thank you for doing this, particularly since you are an independent dyer. I'm always impressed how you showcase others' yarn as well as your own. You could do as many other dyers do and only talk about your own yarn, because your yarn is amazing. I have a sweater quantity of your yarn waiting to be knitted up as soon as I figure out the rest of my pattern lol - you would have every right to feature your yarn proudly in all of your videos and just call it a day.
I've encountered a lot of ridiculous yarn snobbery and elitism in the past few years, especially on IG and YT. There also has been some straight-up Mean Girl behavior from some popular designers and dyers that really leaves a bad taste. The price points of some of the patterns and kits with recommended yarn keeps them out of reach for a lot of people. Some knitters, especially newer ones might not be as savvy or as confident in their yarn substitution, so it's really quite wonderful what you've done here.
I love Knitpicks in general as a great source for quality yarns. I've also used Schoppel Zauberball Crazy yarns, Primrose Yarn, and Patons Kroy sock yarns for several projects. I look forward to checking out some of these other recommendations.
Hear, hear!
Knitpicks is my go to for almost all my projects these days - they have a great variety and great prices - if you hate acrylics but you need to make something for a baby or a cancer patient, or someone allergic to wool, thier Brava yarns are just SO nice to work with - nothing like the acrylics you will get in the craft stores.
I agree. I live in a smaller town with few options. Knitpicks is very budget friendly IMO.
Embroidery! I’m torn between knitting & embroidering - I love both! Thank you for mentioning this idea. I really loved this podcast. What a wealth of information. You make things sound so accessible that I would usually be afraid to try.
I love that you are doing this and showing budget yarn and pricier yarn. It is really nice to see the different types of yarn.
Queensland Perth - 80% superwash wool/20% nylon - 100g/437 yds/$15.00 (at Simply Sock Yarn) and Queensland Rainbow Bridge 100% superwash wool - 100g/328 yds - $16.75 - Just to add an option. This definitely has a more rustic hand to it, but it works well for me because I use it for socks. I will absolutely be indulging in some of the Feederbrook Farms yarn when I have the budget for it. I love BFL.
👍I totally agree about the Queensland yarns, they are well made and their colour choices are varied and lovely.
An interesting FYI ~ Queensland and Jojoland yarns are spun from the same fibres and produced in the same factory.
They are often indistinguishable from one another; so if you can't find Queensland in your area, Jojoland is the perfect substitute - and vice-versa.
I commented this too. I fricken love my socks made out of this yarn. They are going to last me 1,000 years
Yes!!! Queensland Perth is so fabulous. I paid $15 for 100 grams.
Was going to recommebd as qwll. Really gorgeous. Unfortunately very hardto frog....i crocheted with a lot of triple and post stitches.....
love your aesthetic -- you didn't mention your sweater - I understand that this was a specific topic today but -- your sweater was quite lovely. could you mention the pattern and I imagine that it is one of your dyed yarns. Please keep this going -- you are a refreshing host! 😉
Dream Color by Hobbii is also a lovely 100% wool option. It's Super Fine in weight and has 400m per 100g. Also it's so incredibly soft. Only downside is that it's impossible to choose a colorway when they're all so pretty ✨
Thankfully I'm a really, really slow knitter, so I'm good spending extra on the yarn I really, really want. I totally understand wanting more budget options if you knit really fast, are gifting something, need a lower price point, or just don't want to spend a lot of money. So thank you for gathering these all up! Love your channel!
Great video. I was on vacation in CT and shopped at a really amazing local knit shop. Looking for some marled yarn I picked up a ball of the Sidar jewelspun and said "oh shoot, not buying g 100% acrylic anymore..." The shop owner said... there is acrylic and therebia acrylic...this is the only one we carry .....she is right. It is gorgeous and really sumptuous. So I added more acrylic to my stash. Next time Ill resist. Haha 😅😅
Great Podcast - thank you!!! This is the first one of yours I've seen and won't be the last for sure! You mentioned JoJoLand yarn.
I just ran across them with a surprisingly great situation! My sister and I bought yarn at a store in WI for an Aran type sweater for my great niece and we didn't buy enough. We called the shop and they were able to order more yarn and I assumed I'd have to make do with whatever dye lot was available. I was thrilled to find out they still had that dye lot and I got the yarn in a timely manner. The yarn is Baritone, a 100% superwash wool, and the color is a beautiful rich green, perfect for an Irish sweater and the price was $10.00 for 100 grams/220 yards. And I love working with it, it's a very nice soft wool yarn. Also, before we called the shop in WI, I tried calling JoJoLand directly in Texas and though they seem to be a very small business, they did return both my call and my email within a business day or two. So, overall, I was impressed!
What a fabulous mid-week ramble! I put it in my favorites so I can reference it again! Thank you for taking the time to offer this content 🥰🥰🥰
I’m so glad you found this useful! Thank you so much for watching and saving. ❤️❤️
Yarn Hero is beautiful. I’d love for you to do a video on companies that only use Non-mulesing practices.
Today we're exploring marled yarn options (think: Spincycle Yarns) within a range of price points-from BUDGET to BOUGIE! #knitting #yarnsubstitutions
Holy crap this video is amazing!! I love that you included a BFL option. 😍
Stonehedge Fiber Mill sells Crazy Yarn for !4.50/1oogm and it is sport weight no two alike. Zauberball actually come in *several* weights from lace to at least DK, and several fiber options including cotton, and even singles.
I have some of their yarn. Got it from my LYS and she told me it was mill ends that are recycled to make this yarn. My skeins are sport weight 230 yards for $12.
Interesting topic, clearly presented. In addition, I may head over to Ravelry and look up the yarns that interest me-I enjoy reviewing the comments about yarn quality that people share there, and I have steered clear of some yarns because of the number of people who have said that a yarn was prone to pilling, splitting, had an unreasonable number of knots per skein, etc etc. Likewise, when all comments are glowing, I am much more likely to save and invest in a superhighquality product (yarn). I’m looking forward to more in this series of “budget to bougie” yarn (and craft gear, maybe?) 🧶💕
Thanks so much for taking your time to help everyone to make our best choice.
For a couple of inexpensive options, Premier also has Premier Puzzle (100% acrylic, bulky, 100g/$8.99) and Premier Puzzle Cotton (53% acrylic/47%cotton, worsted, $10.99/100g). The cotton only has 10 or 12 colors but the regular bulky Puzzle has a lot of colors.
Hobbii has Dream Color (100% wool, fingering, 100g/$21.99). Beautiful, subtle gradients, but wait for a sale, you can get a much better deal.
And the Woolly Thistle carries Junction Fiber Mill's "Making Tracks" (100% American Falkland wool, DK, $31.99/100g) Spun at a small mill in Vermont. 10 lovely colors.
Thanks, for a great topic, great show!
Great suggestions! Thank you Aileen!
I watched your video on “unpopular knitting opinions”, where you mentioned the idea of doing a podcast like this one on yarn options. Now, I’m so glad to see it; I think it’s a wonderful idea!
Great video! Just want to add that Cascade Wave is also available in fingering weight.
Your bougie price points make me glad I learned to spin; I do this by accident.
Fabulous video, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! 😊❤❤❤
Great video, Tayler! I love that you included so many more affordable options. As a quick FYI, the Schoppelwolle you showed the screenshot off was Stärke 6, which is their heavy sport to DK weight, but they also have a fingering weight option, called Schoppelwolle Zauberball Crazy, which runs at about $24. I've knit socks with it and it holds up really nicely.
This was so thorough and awesome! Thank you!
I can't remember all the yarn I have in storage, which I haven't seen in 3 years, but I know I have JoJo Land. What a pleasant surprise to see you talking about it!
Oh cool! It's a new one for me, but I'm glad some folks found it familiar. ❤️
Ewetopia out of Wisconsin has a beautiful marled yarn - Helix DK 100g/260 yards for $32 . It's a mix of US Rambouillet & Targhee Wool
In non-superwash yarn: for DK color-changing yarn, Junction Fiber Mill offers Making Tracks (32 USD for 210 yards, 100g). For Fingering, there's RiverKnits Chimera marled yarn (12.09 GBP for 195m, 50g), which is in the $30 range for 100g after the current exchange rate to USD and shipping. Both are pretty soft yarns. Garthenor in the UK has two-color barber-pole marls, dyed and undyed, in many of their weights. Softness is yarn-specific: some are toothier than others.
Love the format! Thanks for helping me shop 😄
I love this series!
I loved this podcast, so interesting to see all the yarns!
I love love love this episode. I truly enjoyed it. I learned about so many brands of yarns that I had never heard of before. When I am gifting beanies, I always use acrylic yarns because I don't know if the recipient is allergic to wool. It is now time for me to check out the yarns you showed us. Tayler, thank you soooo much for doing this for us. There's a Hobby Lobby near me and I think they have some marled-like yarns that I need to explore. 😊 Have a beautiful day!
Thank you for this video and your hard work, so helpful! 😊
I love this!! Muchas gracias - excellent options to consider!
Thank you for this video! It was awesome 😊
Thank you for your time and research. It's so great to hear about options.
brilliant video!! i can't wait to see more in the series!
So informative, thank you so much for taking the time and the effort to do this. I always learn so much watching your videos 🥰
I love all your videos and the delivery technique is very professional. No ummmms or rambling off the subject. Thank you!
Question- I bought 2 skeins of Yarn Hero marled and wonder about how best to use them. I want them to shine! Pattern suggestions? Show theme?
I really appreciated this video and can’t wait to see where you go with the budget to boogie theme. You hit on several of my favorites and introduced me to many yarns I wasn’t familiar with. One of my favorites is Chroma Twist in fingering which has been discontinued. I am guarding my few skeins closely. I’m so happy to have found your podcast. I love it.😊
Thank you so much for watching Lara!
This was great! Thank you for taking the time! As a new-ish knitter, I’m excited for the next installment. 😊
I made a night shift shawl with yarn from Hobby Lobby. It's the yarn bee dazzling. Its worsted weight and acrylic, but my shawl turned out beautifully 😍
Love this! I just found your channel, thank you for all your great content.
Thanks so much Tayler for all the research on another great video. I love seeing all the yarn options and price points. I look forward to your next compilation!!💕
This was a fun video. It was nice to see the wide range available. Thank you!
Thank you for a wonderfully informative episode. There are so many alternatives out there and I really appreciate all the work you put into making this content. Love your Felix too!
I knit my first pair of socks ever in Jojoland Melody and LOVED that yarn :)
I just found you yesterday. Love this video. Made a throw blanket for my mom out of a marled yarn as a beginner project
Queensland perth is a great sock weight Marbled yarn that is usually 15 dollar for a full 100 grams and can easily knit a full pair of socks.
I love your videos! Your review of various yarns is so helpful and I hope you continue this topic in future videos.
Great video! Very informative 😊. Thank you for doing all the research.
Thanks Taylor for doing our work for us! Fun seeing all our options because a colorwork sweater is in my future. 😊👍🌞
It is the best episode. So helpful.
Thank you! So glad it has been helpful. ❤️
Very informative. I'm really enjoying all your episodes.
Loved this, thank you!
Thanks again for the varieties! I have a friend who really likes the Premier yarn, and has had good luck with it for what it is…it is a budget yarn, but she said it feels good and doesn’t feel/look ‘budget.’ Zauberball is really fun, I have two in fingering…do not use it for socks, it’s way too thin for socks. I gave up on it for socks cause I thought it would just not hold up as a sock, but would be great for other uses. Haven’t tried the larger sizes. Green Mountain Spinnery makes gorgeous yarn. I’d also suggest Juniper Farms if you like Green Mountain Spinnery.
Great information. Of course I have the brown marled in my stash 😊. Nice to see you.
Also check out the Painted Destert yarns which fall into that lower middle range. They're 100% wool, fingering weight, and have epic color fades.
Mountain Colors Twizzle (worsted) and Twizzlefoot (fingering) which are merino & silk and get a marled effect because of the way the different fibers take the dye differently are also worth looking at even though they're maybe not a TRUE marled yarn. Their website is being glitchy for me, but if I recall correctly, they're at the lower end of that market price category.
The price of Spincycle makes me sad and mad and then more sad!! 🤣
This was fun. I did not realize there were so many marled options. thanks for sharing.
I hope you do more of these kinds of videos! It was super helpful and lot of those yarns I may never have found on my own. I am a big fan of Yarn Hero too!
This was super helpful, I was considering making a project with spin cycle before I realized it was on the very bougie end. I will definitely be looking at some of these options!
Fantastic!
This was great Tayler!!! Feederbrook is wonderful yarn!!! One of my favorites for sure but I'm excited to try some of the others you mentioned!
I LOVE Yarn Hero! My LYS carries it
In midrange - Queensland Perth collection is FABULOUS and fingering / sport
What a great video! More of this, please!
Thank you so much for this video, and by the way, the sweater you're wearing is beautiful!
Thank you so much for doing this in-depth video! I have the Pressed Flowers Cardigan on my list to make, so I really appreciate the information on some alternatives to Spin Cycle!
Such a helpful episode, thank you!
I'm new to your channel, this video was suggested to me by YT and I'm so glad it was. I loved this concept of sharing the different price points and alternatives for these yarns so much! I discovered a lot of new to me yarns that I'm looking forward to learning more and possibly trying them out in future projects. Thanks so much for all the research you did sharing this information! And I definitely subscribed, I hope that you continue more of this theme in the future! Love the Budget to Bougie options!!
I bookmarked several of your mentions. Thanks!
I just got some of the Zauerball yarn and it's amazing! Can't wait to knit socks with it
I have used feederbrook farm in a clincher shawl. Loved using it.
Excellent!!!!
This was very informative, thank you Tayler! I do love Pattons Kroy yarn, is so affordable and easy to find.
I loved this podcast! Great point about saving your pennies to get the more expensive yarn. A special yarn that you saved up for makes it even more special. People tend to forget that. I keep forgetting that I have 4 Zauber balls!!! 🌸
Thx for this very informative podcast 😊
“Lovely” episode with tons of great options. Thank you. ♥️
Thank you! And you’ve caught on to my buzzword. ☺️😉
Thank you for including cotton and acrylics.
I knit a scarf/shawl for my mom with two colors of Ferris wheel. Two row stripes in garter stitch with this yarn turns out very cool.
Surprised that Hobbii Dream Colour isn’t mentioned, it’s my favourite 100% wool fingering weight marled yarn and it’s very affordable 😊
I've ordered from the twisted yarn shop and they have great customer service. Love that there are so many options. I would love to knit a warm marled sweater this winter. Happy knitting everyone🍁🍂
This was very interesting (and I’m not normally very interested in marled yarns)! Well done! I’m looking forward to more videos like this! I became a yarn snob by accident and don’t have the budget to be as picky as I am ;). I am excited to find some more affordable options I may have overlooked :)
Thank you for your great research! Awesome ideas ❤
My pleasure! Thank you for watching. ❤️
Loved this review.
I've used the Jojoland Rhythm yarn and it really is quite nice. The color changes are long, so they would be great for large circumference knitting.
Thank you very much for the time and effort obviously invested in this production. So much helpful information! We all experience different seasons in life. Some during which we can spend more than others. I truly love the feel of natural, untreated fibers. I also appreciate the many options available for those times when natural fibers are not an option economically. I have fond memories of falling in love with crochet as a young girl, using the very cheapest of acrylics. Thanks again!
Turtle Purl makes great sock yarn that comes in 2 separate skeins so you can have identical socks.❤
I love kroy sock yarn, I'm making a shawl holding a purple variegated with black mohair and it's lovely. ❤️ Ooo I've added two new yarns to my list, thank you!
Another awesome alternative to Spincycles Dyed in the Wool is Fibra Natura Cobblestone! 612 yards for $28! 100% superwash merino wool. 🤯
Excellent job, thank you! It. I have to check out some of those options and would not have known where to start without this video!
Thank you Janet! And my pleasure. I'm so glad this has helped some. ❤️
I got Patons Kroy socks Fx in that copper color at Michael's and made a pair of socks ❤️ sooooo fun to knit with and amazing fall colors
Sirdar makes beautiful yarns. I love their cottons and baby yarns.
Hi Tayler! Thank you so much for all of this information ( and enabling!) In my most recent episode ( Ep.5) I show my Granny Vest by Pia Trans knit with two strands of zauberball held double. I personally love how it is working up so if you are curious, I would love for you to check out the outcome😊
Your episode was perfect timing as I am planning my next marled project however want to choose a less expensive yarn ( my vest came in at 102, which was a little shocking at checkout) Again, love and appreciate all of the research you put into this episode❤
These are great options, thank you for the reviews. One of my favorites is Crazy yarn by Stonehedge fiber mill out of Michigan. I love supporting local to me small businesses when I can. The cost is about $15 per 2.5 Oz at 230yds.
I'm also in Michigan and I love Stonehedge fiber mill! Each skein of Crazy is usually unique, so it's an adventure if you're trying to make a larger project that requires multiple skeins. I really like working with Stonehedge yarn and I think Crazy is super fun. 🤩
3:48 I’m in Florida and found this yarn in a knitting shop in Virginia. I love knitting with Stonehenge crazy yarn. I just purchased 3 other kinds of yarn from them recently but haven’t knit with it yet. Looking forward to it though.
Thanks for this… you’ve shown me (us) some great options, a few new-to-me! I Love Patons Kroy (and/orFX) for socks - very hard wearing! Zauberball has had my eye for YEARS!! Colors grab my attention first, then it’s texture!! Very informative vid, thanks much!
I love Feederbrook Farms! The gradients it creates are just beautiful. Thank you for all your research on this topic! I will be checking these out for sure.
Your sweater is amazing!
Thank you Angela!
i've made several nightshifts by andrea mowry out of ferris wheel. really budget friendly option. very squishy and have worn well. no pilling, etc.
