I'm making my first sweater and I'm not fooling myself- it's going to be a mess! HA So I'm using cheap yarn, Lionbrand Respun which is made from recycled polyester. It's surprisingly pretty, I think. Comes in nice colors. And my disaster sweater will only end up costing me around $20! But the only way to learn is to try, so that's what I'm doing :) I really enjoy these yarn option videos.

@@chris112233ish I was working on the Iza Cardigan. I finished the body but never finished the sleeves. I didn't like the way the neckline pulled in with that particular yarn. I do want to revisit the pattern, it's really pretty.
Briggs and Little! Super rustic and Canadian mill (apparently the oldest Canadian mill) and super affordable! $7 CAd for 220yard of worsted weight rustic yarn. I love the feel of the lanolin on my dry skin when I’m knitting it up. I visited their mill and got bargains in the second bin! But their regular price yarns are super affordable

I just blocked my ranunculus knitted with the very rustic Briggs and Little yarn and I was worried initially it would be super scratchy because the unblocked yarn is very rustic and rough. Omg- the magic of blocking. It’s much softer now and has bloomed and blocked nicely!
Great podcast! I am really enjoying this series. Cascade 220 is also another great 100% wool yarn. There is a lot to choose from and I am sure it was hard to narrow it down to just a few.

I would add that Holst Supersoft wool is an excellent choice for budget friendly yarn in a fingering weight. It is sold by the cone as well as caked. The Yarnnery carries it as well as several other shops. I've knitted several sweaters with it and find that it is excellent yarn that softens remarkably with washing and blocking.
I second this! It’s very affordable even ordered directly from the mill. One of my favorites for colorwork, it really is most similar to Biches et Buches le petit lambs wool.
Same and on top of that with Black Friday, it'll be more budget friendly. I just got a whole bunch of cones and they are great. Another place (definitely mid-range but the amount of yardage is great for the wool it is) is Springwools. Two great places. And for bougie is Woolyknit. The shipping cost is insane. But it's a good place to look for rustic wool.
I just found out that this exists and is available in Germany. Soooo many colours and such affordable prices. Thanks a bunch!!! I'll definitely keep that in mind for the next colourwork sweater, after kind of making it my mission to find an affordable yarn with natural fibers and a lot of available colours that still feels okay to wear over a long sleeved shirt and that I can keep using to knit the same sweater in different colours (I'm autistic, so my clothes basically all feeling the same or at least similar makes my life a lot easier 😅)

I just bought yarn for my latest FO (cardigan) from a country market from a lady who sold yarn that was spinned of her own sheep's wool and it was only 7,5 eur/100 g/230 m! It is so soft and rustic at the same time and I love it. You can get these "farm yarns" really cheap if you can buy it straight from the producer, and they have that special feeling in them. 🧡
I don’t think you mentioned this, but Wool of the Andes also comes in bulky (or chunky, I can’t remember what they call it) and sport weight. All three are great budget yarns! :-)
Lanolin, heck yes. Use to work on a farm during sheering and after baling the wool my hands were soooo soft, that's why I like a wool with some Lanolin as my hands feel great when knitting.
Patons began it's life as two separate brands, but it started in Scotland in the UK, they began by making yarn for commercial knitting, but diversified when the two companies merged, to hand knitting yarn in the 1920's. It then expanded in the 1930's across Canada, Australia and the UK, including an angora rabbit farm in the UK!. Thanks for this info, it's great to see real wool yarns available to most people.

Content like this makes me a bit wistful because I have special snowflake skin that will have a temper tantrum if it comes into contact with any but the finest fine wools. Of course I discovered this after I knit myself a nice colorwork hat and got red itchy welts on my forehead after wearing it for half an hour. My fingers itched a bit while I was knitting, but I blew that off as dry skin. Fortunately the hat now lives with someone whose skin doesn't behave churlishly.
As a formerly acrylic only crafter, natural wool is interesting me more and more as i learn to dye and about spinning. I am not going to have my own fiber flock or give up my acrylic for gift items that i know will not be handwashed but i am appreciating more and more wool and am learning to use it well for its specific properties and also not apologize for spending what i want to for my projects
Yesterday I had a great find! At the thrift store (called 'kringloopwinkel' in Dutch) in the yarns basket I found many balls of home-spun undyed (natural sheep colours) yarn. All of those, together with a lamp-shade I also purchased, I had for only 5 euros. A little work is needed (first I have put them in the freezer to kill any bug or moth larva, then I'll make hanks, wash and block them), but it will be worth it.

I have had a really bad experience with US craft stores and yarn weighing 25% to 50% less thean the ball band states so I do not shop in these stores as a result. I buy online from indie yarn dyers and online stores with a good reputation. One place not mentioned is Holst Garn for budget wool yarn. The yarn is fingering weight but held double it is between a DK and a worsted weight. Cost is $5.96 to $7.42 per two cakes (depending if it is on sale) when you hold it double and 313.5 yards of 100% wool yarn. I have had wonderful results with it.
Wow, this was incredibly informative! I really do love the fishermans wool, it's gorgeously rustic. I am definitely going to try out the yarn cones you mentioned, that seems like an amazing value compared to buying by the skein. Their woolen spun looks lovely, and so does the worsted.

I didn’t like fisherman’s wool until I accidentally machine washed it and it felted. It felts wonderfully! I love using it for winter camping outer layers.
I love rustic yarns. I am glad I found out it's possible to get locally produced yarns, made from the wool of 'local' sheep even here in the Netherlands. Because this is such a small country 'local' means: somewhere in the Netherlands. Of course these yarns are not cheap. But it feels good to support the local economy.
Plotulopi is sooooo cheap here in Iceland, like $5 per skein. Makes it quite easy to make semi cheap sweaters, it is very itchy so adding in mohair is important.
I didn't even know Lion Brand Fisherman Wool existed until I started watching your channel, and now I've got plans to buy it to make Emily Curtis' new Dad Sweater pattern! My local Joann's has enough of the Oatmeal colorway in stock AND it's on sale for Black Friday. Unfortunately there are about 4 sweaters ahead of it in my queue, but at least I'll be ready.

Beaverslide Dry Goods, Dupuyer, Montana, family owned. They take their wool to Carstairs, Alberta-Custom Woolen Mill. Beautiful, rustic, affordable yarn.
New to the channel and am enjoying very much! Very rustic (lots of lanolin and maybe even a few small pieces of hay) is MacAusland's from PEI Canada. SUPER cheap, but you do need to physically call them to place an order.🙄 They have been in operation since 1932 and are best known for their wool blankets.

For anyone NEAR green mountain spinnery (Putney, VT) highly recommend visiting in person! They do mill tours (I have a vlog from 2021 on my channel- so fascinating!!!) And you can get great deals on mill ends cones in their shop in person. Wild deals like .30¢ per ounce or something ridiculous. I swear by them!
My suggestion is Berroco Lanas! I got balls of Lanas Light (dk) for $11 for 100 gram ball. Great stuff, and it’s a raw toothy wool that comes in so many beautiful colors.
Just some thoughts. Why do we measure yarn in grams and not yards, meters etc? It seems like we should linearly measure something like yarn and not by weight. Just like fabric. In no situation have I ever weighed a garment after knitting it. I am probably missing something. Please advise.
Thanks for your time and research on this! I am more interested in rustic wools lately, since it turns out superwash is not generally environmentally friendly (some are, but most aren't). And the woolly wools are supposed to be better for colorwork, which is where I'm branching out next in my knitting journey. Just got a bunch of Wool of the Andes (on sale!) for my first colorwork sweater.
A quick edit: Harrisville ‘Shetland’ is a Fingering-weight option listed at 10.50 per 213 yards putting it at a higher price point. I appreciate the lists of budget to bougie options! It's fun to see whats out there in the bougie range, but I'm sticking to budget myself. Partly because I can't afford the bougie stuff for anything more than a hat as a special treat, but also because if I spend that much for a sweater quantity... I will never wear that sweater because I'll be afraid to ruin it. I also think it's great that you're equally supportive of all the options budget through bougie!

I really just want to say how much I am enjoying your podcast. I am learning so much from you. I went to Joann's earlier today and bought 2 skeins of Lion Brand's Fishermen's Wool in color Oatmeal. I, too, am planning on knitting a sweater... (no specific pattern)... The label says to use 5.5 mm needle... but I'm thinking of using 6.0 mm because I like to have some drape of my sweater. What size needle are you using for your sweater Tayler? I also bought 1 skein of Lion Brand's Wool Ease in color Natural Heather. I plan to knit a simple beanie. I can't wait to start on these two projects. I am currently working on my sister's sweater and I am almost done with hers. I have so many plans for next year that I need to actually take some notes so I can focus... And it would really help if I stop frogging my projects. LOL... Thanks for this! I knew about the ‘cones’ option, which is great. I have the Lopi yarn for a classic yoke sweater (actually…it’s an old WIP stored away) and it is lovely yarn and nice to knit with and very easy to do colorwork with. I appreciate this, and I’d love to buy the ‘bougie’ version cause often it’s very eco friendly/small business, and I really support that…but not in a position to do that right now. The ‘shop locally’ idea is great (although the one I found through on of our only two LYS’s …the one I don’t like…overprices their yarn in general and sells local yarn…although actually I think they just get a bunch of Bare from a supplier and do hand dying, although they claim to have sheep, idk. It’s overpriced for bougie.) I usually stick to the midrange, but have used Lion Brand fisherman’s wool before, and it’s was very nice. Mine was straight cream, and I felt like it was listed as Worsted but came out a little more DK, ymmv. Also, nice to have some ideas that are not my automatic go-to’s (Cascade 220) especially Brooklyn Tweed…I didn’t know they had some rustic wools in a great range of colors that were not ‘bougie’ priced (I had them as ‘bougie’ in my head.) Rowan has great rustic yarns, ranging from mid to bougie depending on the yarn (and sales, etc. I love my Rowan, lol. Rowan Tweed is fabulous…not Worsted, but just lovely, kinda pricey…but maybe worth it for something you want to last a lifetime, and fantastic for colorwork.) Thanks again, Tayler, I’m basically binge watching your videos at this point!
Not sure if it’s just my timing, or the mere mention of it on your channel created a run on it- but I’ve been trying for WEEKS to get LB FW from any shop local to me and no one has it 😂 I finally got notification this morning that Joann got some of the Oatmeal and Birch Tweed in, and I. COULDN’T. HELP. MYSELF.!!! I think I may have ordered enough to make a dozen No Frills, Flax or Felix sweaters! And I didn’t even need it- I still have half a dozen skeins from when I was buying in my twenties…

I love rustic yarns. It's does take some searching to find non superwash yarns but it can be done with the help of videos like yours. I just bought some "bougie' yarn from my small towns' fiber mill which shear the sheep from local ranches (No. Calif), so they know exactly where the fleece is coming from. It was pricey ($30+) but lovely yarn. Can't wait to start knitting my sweater from it. Thanks Tayler.
Hi Taylor- Harrisville Designs spins Brooklyn Tweed Loft and Shelter yarns as HD is a woolen spin mill. Also, just a little info, HD Shetland is classed as either a sport or fingering weight knitting yarn, while its big sibling, Highland, is the worsted weight. They are spun in identical colorways with dyed in the wool lovely heathered shades! A win for sure! Definitely worth a trip!
Thank you SOOO much for teaching me about Lion's Brand Fisherman's Wool! It's hard to be in love with natural fibers knitting while on a tight budget. I just ran out and bought out all the Fisherman's wool at my local Joann's. (And it was 40% off!) I then went on line and bought another color that my store didn't have. I'm so happy. I can actually make myself a wool sweater! Can anyone on this thread answer a question for me? I noticed that supplies of that wool seemed to be a bit low. Is this product a long-time staple that we can assume will be restocked? Or is there a good possibility that it's being phased out? Thanks in advance to anyone who might know.
I’m so glad you love it! As for the longevity of the product, I HAVE heard rumors that it may be discontinued. HOWEVER if we keep up the demand, that can change. Lion Brand is VERY receptive to their customer’s desires and demands. I honestly can’t imagine them playing it out completely though. It’s really a much-loved yarn. But…just in case, stock up! ❤️
Ok, coming back to let you know that I have checked the website and there isn’t any reason to believe that FW is being discontinued. I think we’re good. 👍

I absolutely love how they work up, but Noro is expensive and something similar I found at Joanns was a nightmare to work with. I would love to know of other options.
I picked up a skein of I Love this Wool at Hobby Lobby. It is 100% wool and I thought it would be a good choice to make your fire pit mitts for hubs. I have fallen in Love with this yarn. I will go back and get a big bundle to make Big Love cardigan. I found this yarn while searching for fisherman’s wool.

I'm learning a lot about yarn from your channel. I have a question, though. I want to knit the Santa Fe cardigan and the Lion Brand kit includes Hue and Me yarn. I read a review that it is very heavy in the bigger sizes. What is a yarn I can substitute that would be lighter? I almost ordered the Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, but my daughter said I'd need to look for roving yarn. I can't seem to find any that has the colors I need at a price I can afford. Do you have any suggestions?
So this is a great question and I think I may have a great budget option for you. This sweater would be VERY heavy in general so I completely see your concern. And your daughter is right. Roving may be a good option to keep the heft to a minimum. Keep in mind that roving is not as sturdy as a plied yarn, but because this is a cardigan, I really think it's fine. Peace Fleece is available in DK and Worsted at $14-15 per 4 oz or about 113 gm. Worsted comes in an amazing color.

I have had a really bad experience with US craft stores and yarn weighing 25% to 50% less thean the ball band states so I do not shop in these stores as a result.
I buy online from indie yarn dyers and online stores with a good reputation. One place not mentioned is Holst Garn for budget wool yarn. The yarn is fingering weight but held double it is between a DK and a worsted weight. Cost is $5.96 to $7.42 per two cakes (depending if it is on sale) when you hold it double and 313.5 yards of 100% wool yarn. I have had wonderful results with it.
Wow, this was incredibly informative! I really do love the fishermans wool, it's gorgeously rustic. I am definitely going to try out the yarn cones you mentioned, that seems like an amazing value compared to buying by the skein. Their woolen spun looks lovely, and so does the worsted.

I didn’t like fisherman’s wool until I accidentally machine washed it and it felted. It felts wonderfully! I love using it for winter camping outer layers.
It’s great for dyeing with kool aid, especially if you plan to felt it.
I love rustic yarns. I am glad I found out it's possible to get locally produced yarns, made from the wool of 'local' sheep even here in the Netherlands. Because this is such a small country 'local' means: somewhere in the Netherlands. Of course these yarns are not cheap. But it feels good to support the local economy.
Plotulopi is sooooo cheap here in Iceland, like $5 per skein. Makes it quite easy to make semi cheap sweaters, it is very itchy so adding in mohair is important.

I didn't even know Lion Brand Fisherman Wool existed until I started watching your channel, and now I've got plans to buy it to make Emily Curtis' new Dad Sweater pattern! My local Joann's has enough of the Oatmeal colorway in stock AND it's on sale for Black Friday. Unfortunately there are about 4 sweaters ahead of it in my queue, but at least I'll be ready.

For anyone NEAR green mountain spinnery (Putney, VT) highly recommend visiting in person! They do mill tours (I have a vlog from 2021 on my channel- so fascinating!!!) And you can get great deals on mill ends cones in their shop in person. Wild deals like .30¢ per ounce or something ridiculous. I swear by them!

I am currently knitting a Eun Sweater with Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool in Natural (held together with mohair)!
My suggestion is Berroco Lanas! I got balls of Lanas Light (dk) for $11 for 100 gram ball. Great stuff, and it’s a raw toothy wool that comes in so many beautiful colors.
Just some thoughts. Why do we measure yarn in grams and not yards, meters etc? It seems like we should linearly measure something like yarn and not by weight. Just like fabric. In no situation have I ever weighed a garment after knitting it. I am probably missing something. Please advise.
What do you think of Harrisville Designs Highland style? I don't do well with scratchy so I don't know if it would be a good fit for me.

Thanks for your time and research on this! I am more interested in rustic wools lately, since it turns out superwash is not generally environmentally friendly (some are, but most aren't). And the woolly wools are supposed to be better for colorwork, which is where I'm branching out next in my knitting journey. Just got a bunch of Wool of the Andes (on sale!) for my first colorwork sweater.

I appreciate the lists of budget to bougie options! It's fun to see whats out there in the bougie range, but I'm sticking to budget myself. Partly because I can't afford the bougie stuff for anything more than a hat as a special treat, but also because if I spend that much for a sweater quantity... I will never wear that sweater because I'll be afraid to ruin it. I also think it's great that you're equally supportive of all the options budget through bougie!

I really just want to say how much I am enjoying your podcast. I am learning so much from you. I went to Joann's earlier today and bought 2 skeins of Lion Brand's Fishermen's Wool in color Oatmeal. I, too, am planning on knitting a sweater... (no specific pattern)... The label says to use 5.5 mm needle... but I'm thinking of using 6.0 mm because I like to have some drape of my sweater. What size needle are you using for your sweater Tayler? I also bought 1 skein of Lion Brand's Wool Ease in color Natural Heather. I plan to knit a simple beanie. I can't wait to start on these two projects. I am currently working on my sister's sweater and I am almost done with hers. I have so many plans for next year that I need to actually take some notes so I can focus... And it would really help if I stop frogging my projects. LOL... Thanks for this! I knew about the ‘cones’ option, which is great. I have the Lopi yarn for a classic yoke sweater (actually…it’s an old WIP stored away) and it is lovely yarn and nice to knit with and very easy to do colorwork with. I appreciate this, and I’d love to buy the ‘bougie’ version cause often it’s very eco friendly/small business, and I really support that…but not in a position to do that right now. The ‘shop locally’ idea is great (although the one I found through on of our only two LYS’s …the one I don’t like…overprices their yarn in general and sells local yarn…although actually I think they just get a bunch of Bare from a supplier and do hand dying, although they claim to have sheep, idk. It’s overpriced for bougie.) I usually stick to the midrange, but have used Lion Brand fisherman’s wool before, and it’s was very nice. Mine was straight cream, and I felt like it was listed as Worsted but came out a little more DK, ymmv. Also, nice to have some ideas that are not my automatic go-to’s (Cascade 220) especially Brooklyn Tweed…I didn’t know they had some rustic wools in a great range of colors that were not ‘bougie’ priced (I had them as ‘bougie’ in my head.) Rowan has great rustic yarns, ranging from mid to bougie depending on the yarn (and sales, etc. I love my Rowan, lol. Rowan Tweed is fabulous…not Worsted, but just lovely, kinda pricey…but maybe worth it for something you want to last a lifetime, and fantastic for colorwork.) Thanks again, Tayler, I’m basically binge watching your videos at this point!

Not sure if it’s just my timing, or the mere mention of it on your channel created a run on it- but I’ve been trying for WEEKS to get LB FW from any shop local to me and no one has it 😂 I finally got notification this morning that Joann got some of the Oatmeal and Birch Tweed in, and I. COULDN’T. HELP. MYSELF.!!! I think I may have ordered enough to make a dozen No Frills, Flax or Felix sweaters! And I didn’t even need it- I still have half a dozen skeins from when I was buying in my twenties…

I love rustic yarns. It's does take some searching to find non superwash yarns but it can be done with the help of videos like yours. I just bought some "bougie' yarn from my small towns' fiber mill which shear the sheep from local ranches (No. Calif), so they know exactly where the fleece is coming from. It was pricey ($30+) but lovely yarn. Can't wait to start knitting my sweater from it. Thanks Tayler.
Hi Taylor- Harrisville Designs spins Brooklyn Tweed Loft and Shelter yarns as HD is a woolen spin mill. Also, just a little info, HD Shetland is classed as either a sport or fingering weight knitting yarn, while its big sibling, Highland, is the worsted weight. They are spun in identical colorways with dyed in the wool lovely heathered shades! A win for sure! Definitely worth a trip!
Thank you SOOO much for teaching me about Lion's Brand Fisherman's Wool! It's hard to be in love with natural fibers knitting while on a tight budget. I just ran out and bought out all the Fisherman's wool at my local Joann's. (And it was 40% off!) I then went on line and bought another color that my store didn't have. I'm so happy. I can actually make myself a wool sweater! Can anyone on this thread answer a question for me? I noticed that supplies of that wool seemed to be a bit low. Is this product a long-time staple that we can assume will be restocked? Or is there a good possibility that it's being phased out? Thanks in advance to anyone who might know.
I’m so glad you love it! As for the longevity of the product, I HAVE heard rumors that it may be discontinued. HOWEVER if we keep up the demand, that can change. Lion Brand is VERY receptive to their customer’s desires and demands. I honestly can’t imagine them playing it out completely though. It’s really a much-loved yarn. But…just in case, stock up! ❤️
Ok, coming back to let you know that I have checked the website and there isn’t any reason to believe that FW is being discontinued. I think we’re good. 👍

I have been enjoying the budget to bougie series that you have started. Do you have thoughts on doing an episode on long colorway yarn like Noro? I absolutely love how they work up, but Noro is expensive and something similar I found at Joanns was a nightmare to work with. I would love to know of other options.
I picked up a skein of I Love this Wool at Hobby Lobby. It is 100% wool and I thought it would be a good choice to make your fire pit mitts for hubs. I have fallen in Love with this yarn. I will go back and get a big bundle to make Big Love cardigan. I found this yarn while searching for fisherman’s wool.
This is so great I love the first two yarns you just mentioned the fisherman’s and the patons are great. I’m making a big love cardigan right now I did the patterns and then I will be making another probably cardigan out of the fisherman’s wool so excited it’s incredible will totally underrated.❤

I'm learning a lot about yarn from your channel. I have a question, though. I want to knit the Santa Fe cardigan and the Lion Brand kit includes Hue and Me yarn. I read a review that it is very heavy in the bigger sizes. What is a yarn I can substitute that would be lighter? I almost ordered the Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, but my daughter said I'd need to look for roving yarn. I can't seem to find any that has the colors I need at a price I can afford. Do you have any suggestions?
So this is a great question and I think I may have a great budget option for you. This sweater would be VERY heavy in general so I completely see your concern. And your daughter is right. Roving may be a good option to keep the heft to a minimum. Keep in mind that roving is not as sturdy as a plied yarn, but because this is a cardigan, I really think it's fine.
