How to repair a headlight with moisture/water in it!

- This is how I fixed a leak in a headlight. Just remove the light and put a bead of silicone around the seem between the lens and rear housing. Remember to remove the moisture, water, condensation before you seal it.
It seems most people think water gets into a headlight from rainfall and water dripping into the light some how... but I don't think this is the case. I believe when you turn your headlight on the temperature inside the light rises drastically and once you turn them of,f a suction is created and if the outside moisture is high then the moisture gets drawn into the light and later condensates. I might be wrong..... What are your thoughts?

It is a pain when you get water in the headlights. Thanks for sharing this video with us. It helps a lot.
Thanks this helped out a bunch. I just bought new headlights and didn't know i had to seal them.. haha so i followed all the steps in the video, helped so much! no condensation for 3 days now!!!
You can buy syringes to feed baby birds at many pet stores. They don't have a needles so you don't have to worry about unforeseen accidents (like kids running out of the house to see what you're doing).
Thank you for the video. I have one foglight that has condensation in it. I'm going to seal both of them tho.
Hey Mike, you have any idea how I can clean my headlight from accumulated dust inside of it?
Just did this on my accord today and great video just wanted to add for some headlights dice as halo's after the headlights appeared clear the remains of water was then pooled to the bottom so unfortunately I had to drill a small hole in the back of the headlights then followed by silicone over the hole as well as around and crevices that water may enter but overall great video thanks
Great video thanks for the help. I'm goin to try it out!
That’s a great idea with the syringe! I think I’m going to wait and get one too like you did, that’s seems to work way better than with the full cartridge tip. Thanks for the video, very helpful!

Most headlights have a vent or 2, but if the temp differential between the air inside and the air outside, moisture can/will still condense inside. It is almost always the seal between the clear cover and the housing that has some very small separation.

I had a clogged up front indicator lens on my Nissan Sylphy. Took it off and used a hair dryer to clear all the water droplets out. Could have used compressed air but did the job easy. A used lens to buy here is $50. Had a small crack so sealed it used contact glue and did the trick.Clear silicone will also do the trick & most pharmacies will sell u a syringe? I use syringes for my printer refills
Thanks. I actually tried sealing one of them to compare - putting bead around plastic lens. It looks like it's done the job, compared to the other one. Now if I'd only used silicone that wasn't so old it will not dry. lol
Wow, helped heaps. Definitely going to get this done to my girlfriends supra headlights! Cheers!
I am interested in the other lights. Would you please post that video? I watched the headlights video. My problem is I don't know how to take the light cover off. That is basically what I really need to know. Headlight. No problem. Got that. Break light. Not so much. Thank you very very much for responding so fast! U the man! Hope to hear from you again
Awesome video, thanks. I know this wont seal the light but for a quick fix can you just take out the bulb and use a blow dryer to dry it out?
That's a nice concise video :)
does it works with hid
Nice Job! Well made video
very interested if I may know, what type of equipment and materials you use until the glass can be clean as new
thank you
thank u for this video,I'm gonna try it out on my silverado
Would've been nice to see how you got the water out
thank you. very helpful video for me. and save some money
All well and good but how do you remove the spots inside
I have this problem , 2008 Lexus ES 350 , head light lens has moisture inside . I wonder if it's the same concept ??
Awesome! I appreciate your comment....
Dude!!! You’re good!👍🏽
Good video bro what do you use for dry the humidity inside the light you just blow air whit the compressor or something diferent ??? Thanks
Nice vid, what type of glue can I use to seal a lense back?
Big like man...big like...Amazing job!!!!I went to a mechanic and he said to me that will cost about 70e it's about 80$ for pair!!!He said "i must open headlight and that process is really fucked up"...and bla,bla,bla...!!!Nice vid...:)
Would water proof silicone work? And do you basically just fill in all the cracks? Got any tips for a 2002 Nissan Altima headlight?
I need the front focus on the side of the copilot .. which I can replace since I do not get the original .. I am from venezuela
very useful video and it works
Handy video thanks for sharing. What tune is that playing in the video?
I have a question . Now where the chrome part is dirty with water dots can I removed my headlight from the car fill it out with water to cleaned n later do what u doing dry it with the air ???
Really enjoyed the music as well. Thanks!
I had leaky rear light al I did was get the smallest drill bit and drill 2 tiny little holes at the bottm of the light so air can get I then I sealed with black tape around the top edge of the light works great but after 3 yrs. I think I should place the black tape.
Thanks for the video...
ok iv tried to google this find nothing... my right side light is foggy.. i have tried restoration kit 2 times now minimal change... its foggy on the inside it seems but i see zero water or any kinda fluid inside... any idea what it can be..?
Nice method! How many minutes has the compressed air been put inside the headlight?
How did you make out with the seal on that headlight? Did it stay sealed, did the seal turn yellow over the years?
Thanks this just gave me an idea.
Thanks bud... the songs called "kitty in the window" by Podington Bear
where can I pick up one of those needle syringe this at?
thanks for posting.. nice civic...... any oem chin + i liner grill
Still good advise .... Will refer to it from now on... Very good comments from other people.
How do can you get the condensation out of the headlight of a 2003 Mustang GT. Any ideas or suggestions.
If my headlight is HID, does this technique still apply? Or do I need to also replace the ballast? Not a car person whatsoever but if doing this can save me
What size syringe did you use. Did you get that at Amazon too
I have done this with HID lights also. The process is the same. Usually the ballast are sealed in their own housing and then screwed to the exterior of the headlight housing so you shouldn't have an issue with it.
You're using an air compressor ? Or a vacuum ? I got some humidity in my bmw 3 series headlight due to trying to change the bulb what would yu suggests I do
good tutorial and as well CIVIC
He used painter caulk which is not 100% water tight. It has to have silicone in it if you want the seal to last. I would also recommend putting some heat to the glass for awhile (hair dryer) to get any remnant water vapor out of the light then quickly reconnect it. It would also be smart to do this on a day with low humidity.
I found my leak at the top of the housing by using air pressure and soapy water.White silicone for the top and black silicone for the black gasket area w/masking tape. The moisture was mostly on the parking light side,so I BURNED 2 small holes at the bottom with a torch and a paper clip.I used compressed air to dry out the housing.Don't try to drill it!
so how did you actually separate the headlight?
the pencil air gun is sucking air or blowing air?
The sealant for in side can use or not
how does the pencil works does it suck in the water or blows out like a hair dyer
It Blows! No pun intended:)
I have a 2006 4 runner and both head lights are leaking. I'm thinking about trying this. Maybe even use this method. And tape off after and try a flex seal spray. And on the light bulbs they make a grease type for light bulbs to protect bulbs packing on exterior. Cause new headlights are expensive.
if you take out the headlight out to leave it out in the sun or just air dry in a warm place, does the water leave any water spots inside the headlight?
Good vid, useful tip, thanks. Any idea what the music is that's playing?
how can I find that tool??..
Did this work, permanently? My turn signal housing keeps getting condensation on inside, and it had actually filled up over time, to reach the bulb. It looks like the seals are fine, and only has openings for light sockets. I'm not sure if a seal will stop condensation (caused by temperature differences inside and out of light). Thought about drilling a vent, and/or a drain. Def. not spending $400 on new lights.
My car was off all day and still had water condensation in headlight housing build up
Great video I had my husband replace my headlight because it always had moister in it when we replaced it well the same thing happened again I will tell him about this video thank you so much.
+Margaret long moisture?
+Shylockza I'm pretty sure that's called a "typo".. that happens from time to time.
She said moist
You can always pull the headlight, blow it completely dry and through one of the socket holes hook up a shop vac to pull a vacuum on the light. Clean the seam of the lense with alcohol. While light is under a vacuum apply silicone to seam, the vacuum will pull the silicone through the leak path and stop the leak. When the silicone stops pulling through the leak path you should be complete. Good luck!
Great educational video, as everyone else clearly states! Thanks :)
Ps- that song that is playing in your video be found here on UA-cam :(

Where can I get this done
Hey bro, are aftermarket headlights faulty like that ? I remember when I installed aftermarket headlights and then washed my car it got foggy inside it, it's been like that since then, I always thought it would get fixed by itlself but it hasn't. Would I need to open up the headlight to wipe it off ? Or what do you suggest I do thanks
Cheap aftermarket headlights yeah, my headlight have permanent condensation in them i am going to actually split the clear plastic off the back part clean it perfectly, black out the inside (except reflector) and then re seal it the right way. Personally i would split the headlight because you can ultimately get a better seal when you assemble it.
Where can i get a Syringe like that one you're using in the video to apply the silicone?
eBay
any link? I can't find them
Ebay blunt tip syringe
Where would I get a syringe like that?
Nice!
My friend, I thought I'm insane..... but you, no comment !!!! :)
I accidentally glued the headlight to my face and sealed it with a silicone gasket. What do I do now?
lmao!!!!!!
Good job. It is a HEADlight after all.
Tyler James Newton you can use a 12 gauge Remington 870. use #4 birdshot. hold approx 10 inches from head, squeeze trigger. that should loosen light from face. let us know how it turned out. haha
Tyler James Newton well if I was you iced look for a girl with some nice tail lights!
Bennell M-4 with Short Barrel and a Rifle Slug would Leave Hole For Knife to Cut Away Rest of Light?
Awsome jod man
We need a follow up... It looks to me that you used a siliconized latex caulk and not pure silicone. My experience is when you use a water based silicone that the life expectancy won't be very long since water can effect it and keep it from curing. I know silicone can be VERY MESSY but would not ever fail. Thoughts? Is this still working for you? After how long??? Thank you.
Yup, If I had silicone at the time, I'd have used it but this was a spur of the moment thing and I decided to use what I had. It lasted for as long as I had the vehicle which was a couple years after I made the vid.
Thanks
Did sealing that headlight with silicone actually work? Has there been no more moisture buildup inside the headlight????
Good for your then! I'm gonna have to try that syringe trick for my next retrofit! Cheers!
good thinking
I got dirt(not moisture) on the inside and also some dead bugs. How to clean that ?
Amox Probably a lot easier to just buy a headlight at that point. You can still remove the lens from the housing, clean the inside until you're content, then put the leans back on with sealant.
thanks
Make and model in title would help. I'm looking for help with a 2011 Dodge Caravan and this is no help.
Would RTV be better to use because of the High Temp?
Something like transmission pan rtv or valve cover rtv?
It'll work fine for sealing the leak but I haven't seen any clear RTV (only orange, black or grey) so it probably won't look pretty:) I guess the grey would look alright. Also, I wouldn't think the high temp would matter for this purpose.
Pro Scott I bought some clear rtv, but it's also an adhesive. But I used it anyways. I also just installed aftermarket headlights in my civic and I sealed them with it, But you make me worried lol.
If i dont have access to a air gun. Well a tire air machine at a gas station work? Or a can of air for keyboards????
+adrian7272 Air needs to blow into the headlamp until all moisture is getting out. It will probably take much more time and costs than what you can afford to buy and have patience with until its out.
Hr. Charis koo well my headlights dont have water damage, i just want to clean the inside of some ,after market tail lights, and seal them. Any suggestions
You will have to open them op, clean them and re-seal them. It is difference from manufacturer. I have not done this myself, yet.
Hr. Charis ok would it be a bad idea if i just silicone sealed them right out the box? They are spyder auto after market headlights
No that should do it. Just remember to use silicone that's clear/transparent for better visual (your choice) and that's weather resistant (can withstands summer temp. and winter temps.)
I heard u can do it by drilling a small hole in the headlight
my low beam headlights dont work but my high beams do work. how do i fix this

Well if you don't have a leak then all you need to do is get the moisture out, you can try pulling the bulbs on a warm day and see if it evaporates. If that doesn't work then I have the air pencils available on my site but you will need a compressor:)
use spray flex seal. stuff is bomb
It's a 2000 model..
Spray flex seal from home depot all around the seam of the headlight
not on the front of the lens and it will never get moisture in it again works well
francis pilgrim Flex seal? Is that what the product is called?
how old is that car?!
Lol I have this problem too. Im going to try this on the weekend. Worse comes to worse, I end up dropping a paycheck on a new assembly. I dont have an air compressor, so would a hair dryer work? Also, I have a black car and I am afraid that white silicon would end up looking like hammered dogshit. Would it matter if I get a black silicon based sealant instead?
Then try 3m window weld
thats alot of work
Not sure, I just had it in a junk drawer... If you do use one you might want to get a bigger needle. It was pretty tough squeezing it out.
I own a pontiac grand am 94 and the orginal head lights have nvr gone out its about to be 2014 BUILT TO LAST! I like how it takes too sec to change the bulb on my old shit if the headlight did go out pop the hood unclip unscrew bad bulb insert new done dont even need 1 tool.
you don't need the syringe. get masking tape and tape along the edge. then caulk.
I know! Lol, how cool. It looks just like my meat marinade injector. You can look for them on Amazon.
Try using an icing bag. Fix ur lights and eat the access win win👍
yup...she's turbo:)
Thanks...and nope on the parts!
How can these headlights be built so shitty to let moisture in.
My old cars never had this issue.
It's a Honda...
Mitch i meant headlights in general.
its not cause its a honda. they all do it.
I was making a joke. It's these companys trying to save money and make shit cheaply made. Greedy bastards, thats all there is to it.
Maybe there was more to it than the joke.. coz my 2004 Accord does this shit too.. both headlights even. First car in many many years to do this.. and I ONLY had old shitty cars.. mostly Toyota's. Besides that, I love the Honda..
(but if I need to take off the bumper to seal the headlights properly, that love will fade fast as hell)
Chryslerdude
My 2002 Pontiac headlights do this. AND the taillights. Plus headlight haze. Used sealant but didn't blow moisture out. Used Sunbeam head restorer after 45 minutes of sanding and polishing each headlight. Guaranteed for life. 4 years later, guess what? HAZED. The car is a 2 door. Only 49k miles. would trade it for a desert vehicle when I move.
you have all these answers on head lights but none for any other lights.brake lights. backup lights? i have a brake light that is half full of water. well, how do you fix that?
Sorry if it seems that way! You'll need to remove the light like in this vid and pour out the majority of the water and then get the condensation out either with an air pencil like I used(avail. in the description) or leave it in the sun or a low humidity environment and then like in this vid put a bead of silicone around the seam. Basically the same as shown! good luck. I do have a taillight oxidation removal vid but it doesn't seem to many people are interested in the other lights.
Well i would say its the same concept as the headlight
