Wilt Chamberlain's would be higher but I don't think they measured it then, he was 7'1 and had a 37 inch vert and a 7'8 wingspan. His athleticism was unreal
You mean: to grab a nickel from the top of the backboard? There's only one Superman in entire history of NBA, and he scored 100 points just for fun. Rest of "Supermen" do funny commercials, talk shows or imitations for that purpose. :)
Dwight Howard can actually get higher then 12'6" because when he dunked the 12' hoop in the dunk contest he got about 12 inches over the rim at the least.
yungweeknd . If you really want to succeed at vertical jump then it worth looking Adam Folker's workouts. Recently found at www.vertjumps.com Plenty of good resources there.
valona mart hey small world! I have that vertical program. It is very good. i screwed up my hamstring a bit ago though so i cant do it for a while. i got an inch after the first weak. (trained muscles you didnt know you have) and someday i will dunk. cool to see someone else who has it.
Shaqs accomplishment is more worthy of a Max Vert Reach because he did this with a ball in his hand and did it during a game with more pressure and was probably sweating. It took him more work to get that Vet than Dwight Howards. So Shaq is still the real Superman.
No Shaq wouldn't have done this with a ball in his hand because it was recorded and if anything you would jump higher in a game. This is also not really about dunking more about blocking
Are you stupid ? .. How could it be recorded if it was in a game? He obviously did it in a test. They just showed a picture of shaq in a game in the video, that doesn't mean he did it in the game.. Smh
+Dj Sarandos He was able to dunk on a 12 foot hoop during scrimmages. In 1956, Kansas coach Phog Allen made the team practice on a 12 foot hoop because he was advocating for a hoop height change. Wilt was able to dunk on that hoop. Dwight accomplished this same feat in a dunk contest, but Wilt did it during practice against defenders. Some of his teammates from Philly reported him touching the top of the backboard. He was a track athlete at Kansas as well competing in the high jump. Given that he had a 7'8" wingspan and was 2 inches taller than Dwight, it easy to believe he could have touched the top.
+dpillay009 Technically speaking Wilt has about 4 inches on Dwight bc players now are measured in shoes and Dwight added an inch to his height when he really is 6'10 while Wilt without shoes is 7'1 put shoes on him and he's hot 4 maybe 5 inches on Dwight as well as just as much athletic ability.
+Pearson Jackins I think that's just another exaggeration. Some people also said that Vince Carter could jump high enough to take a quarter off the top of the backboard. Until there is video proof of either one, they are all but rumors.
Either David Thompson lied about touching the top of the backboard, or the backboard's were shorter back then. Thompson was an great athlete, but only about 6'4. If guy like D12, Javale Mcgee, and James White can't do it, then there is no way Thompson could've done it.
I strongly suspect the stories of touching the top of the backboard are on playground goals that aren't nearly as high as the NBA regulation backboards.
My only issue with this is they don't factor in adrenaline, he only did it twice, and it's not much of an accomplishment at a relative level. Just look at Shaq and Howard's bodies, Howard can definitely go well above that, but they didn't test enough and didn't factor in adrenaline.
yeah, It always feels that I jump higher goin for a block or rebound than just messin around grabbin the rim... I cant dunk nything but a wiffle ball :S haha
I swear to god he does, in an interview he said he had a 50 inch vertical and there's a video on UA-cam of him blocking a shot at least 13 feet in the air.
Holy fucking shit. Putting his stats into a horse power calculator yielded 3.69 horse power. Anything approaching 3 is considered elite and this guy is close to 4. That's inhuman
Gerald green could probably touch where Dwight touched with his elbows. That dude's not human. If only he had half as much game as he does athletic ability.
Wilt Chamberlain beats Shaq and Dwight howard. 7'1 bare foot, 280 lbs in his prime who had over a 40 inch vertical and could literally touch the top of the backboard. He also had one of the biggest wingspan measuring as low as 7'8'' and as high as up to 8'0''. He was as fast as a guard and even faster than some. The strongest NBA player ever as well. Very impressive though of Shaq at 7'0 barefoot with 320 lbs who jumped that high as as Dwight howard who is 6'9 bare foot with a long wingspan and that leaping ability.
@@SOSick691 Yes they did, Just go check it. His teammates used to put quarters on the top of the backboard and he used to jump up and get it. Many of his teammates witnessed him do it. Plus there are videos on UA-cam that show him touching the top of the backboard
I watch these videos about verical jumps waiting for the moment they talk about the force applied on the ground. Those random figures cracks me up every time... LOL
There is something, what I dont understand. Howard is 6'11, he's vertical leap was 39 inch. If we add this two number, than the result is: 10 feet and 2 inches, head should be above the rim, but definitely was under
i dont know why is that coming so funny but , i am not able to stop myself to laugh that dwights free throw practice jokes hahahahahahahahah and thats another hilarious one hahahah
David Thompson - and the GOAT - both jumped and took a quarter off of the top of the backboard. These other guys can jump - but these other 2 were the greatest of all time - for jumping/vertical.
Yao's wingspan is 7'5" which is short for his height. Shaq and wilt were Much shorter and had longer arms. Plus Yao has a ridiculously big head which is adds useless height in terms of veritcal touch
Off of a standing jump. Remember that. If he had a running start and some time I'm sure he could reach it. Also he was wearing Chuck Taylors. Connie Hawkins said the only person he knew that could reach the top of the backboard was Wilt. The angle looks just fine to me.
Same with Ray Lewis. He's a veteran so he knows how to maximize the force he produces by putting his whole body weight into a hit. I'm not at all saying Ray Lewis isn't an animal, but you gotta admit it's crazy how much force Dwight Howard can produce
actually, shaq was a beast defensively too. throughout his prime, he was one of the leagues best shot blockers and when you consider the shots he didn't block but altered- he was a monster.
robert wadlow was measured with a standing reach of around 12 feet without shoes. without shoes he was 8'11,1 and with shoes he was 9'1 that makes his reach 12'2. imagine his reach when he jumped even if it wasn't that high
Look it up. At his athletic peak he was said to have a maximum vertical leap of 48-50 inches, with Chuck Taylors. He was a track star at his high school. He also used to train with Arnold Shwarzenegger. You can look up some videos on UA-cam about Arnold talking about how strong Wilt used to be.
According to my calculations, he would only be able to jump 24.5 inches higher on the moon if he were wearing the same EVA suit the astronauts were wearing during the Apollo missions and he applied the exact same force for the exact same amount of time. Total vertical on the moon : 64 inches.
He would jump up, take a quarter off of the top of the backboard, and flip it over before he landed. The guy was a high jump champion in high school, guys have been capable of jumping more than half of their height before, and Wilt was one of them. The only reason wilt took so many jumpers and finger rolls was he was sick of people just calling him an athletic freak and nothing else
Hi guys, I am a college player who plays for Gonzaga and I wanted to inform you guys that i am 6 foot 7 shooting guard and the highest i ever jumper was 40.3 inches and i think that was the record for highest bounce from a college player and i went against Dwight Howard this past weekend and he beat me to retain his record by 0.4 inches, I am pretty sure Gerald Green can reach 45.0 .
Don't mix up high jumping records with pure vertical. Olympic jumping technique means that athletes center of gravity is also his lowest point more or less - they position their body horizontally. Since in a 2m tall athlete center of gravity is near 1m above ground already, pushing body's center of gravity additional 1 meter up would add up to a 2m result. Pure vertical is about how much separation you can get without adjusting body position, picking legs up etc
They should measure it when Dwight is still in his athletic peak at 2007. In 2007 dunk contest he did it so easily. This video was in 2012 and Dwight got much older, notice that he had a hard time reaching it. When basically in 2007 it's just too easy.

Wilt Chamberlain is the real superman. 7'1 with a 9'6 standing reach. Not to mention the highest vertical jump ever recorded or an NBA player with 50 inches. Max bench press of 550 pounds.
That was all in good fun, and Dwight Howard is cool. Sometimes he's funny, and most of the time he's a dominating force. Also that was a joke, except for Scalabrine. Man's the quiet Superman haha, also I don't like being called stupid, I could be a dog for all you know hahahaha

At 7 foot 1 inch he had somewhere around a 40 to 41 inch vertical leap IN GAME. I can only imagine how high he could reach if was being tested for science like in this video.
please Wilk Chamberlain once was said during a game blocked a shot and his hand went one foot over the backward it was in on the record but a referee who seen it said he probably went over 15 or 16 feet above the backboard.
"Surprisingly belongs to Shaquille O'Neal?" I love how he insinuates that Shaq was never in shape. Shaq was a beast of an athlete when he was younger. If prime Shaq was brought into a lab specifically to break this record, I'm sure he'd be able to defend it.
I don't think people understand the difference between a person's vertical leap and a person's vertical REACH. For instance, Nate Robinson has a higher vertical leap than Dwight Howard, but Dwight Howard has a higher vertical reach. Why? Because a person's height has to be taken account of. Just because a person jumps higher, doesn't mean he reaches higher. Ultimarely, reach is much more important than leap.
Wilt Chamberlain's would be higher but I don't think they measured it then, he was 7'1 and had a 37 inch vert and a 7'8 wingspan. His athleticism was unreal
+KJ2832 Dwight is only 6'11 so in theory Wilt should've been able to touch higher
+KJ2832 Him and his teammates in Philadelphia have stated the saw him grab money off the top of a backboard. So I would say it was higher lol
They show his standing reach to be about the same as dwights though, around 9'2
wow 7'8 wingspan.Thats fucking long
Wilt could touch the top of the backboard
Shaq and Dwight are lucky Wilt isn't around anymore to touch the top of the backboard.

Sasuke Uchiha Wilt also did that, but thanks for the irrelevant and ignorant tidbit.
its frustrating to see that they havent seen wilt touch the top

TBT to when Dwight Howard was good
he still is just not as good.

Abdul Khan 11.8 rebounds per game, 1.6 blocks, 13.7 points he good dude accept it just cause u don't like him don't mean he aint good.
he could probably jump higher without all the robot stuff
What they didn't measure is the effects of adrenalin that may add to that vertical even further.
Dwight Howard can actually get higher then 12'6" because when he dunked the 12' hoop in the dunk contest he got about 12 inches over the rim at the least.

Brandon Stevens It's because you have adrenaline when you're in the middle of action competing, you don't get that when you're messing around.
Yeah they definitly should inject adrenaline - for science :)
Peter Kraus You don't need to inject anything, if anything just play a match or have him do a dunk contest performance before this so he's pumped up.
Surely you have all the basics of human anatomy and physiology covered..
He is one of the most hilarious player of all time
They should have Gerald green do this in sport science.
This is an awesome job. Want to find out how high Dwight Howard can jump? Actually get Dwight Howard to come and jump for you... lol
For fuck sakes, Wilt chamberlain was 7'2 and the guy had a 45 inch vertical. He could actually grab the top of the back board.

Yeah or Artis Gilmore. I saw a photo of him jumping. Amazingly high vertical.
or the giant mugsy bogues
David Thompson
How? Hes fucking dead
Yea but shaq actually had a ball and did it in game
u dum
+Stephen Curry and how is that
No doubt. Plus, Shaq weighed over 300 pounds. That's an extra twenty pounds. Shaq was freakishly athletic.
Shaq didn't get that reach with a ball genius, also Dwight easily dunked on a 12 foot rim (with a ball)
it wasnt 12 feet.
"I am ready, for science" LOL
I remember back in the 90's hearing about guys stacking quarters on top of the backboard. Guess this disproves that myth.
Wilt Chamberlain was stacking quarters just in the 60s and not 90s my guy had a 50' vert and he was 7'1 with a 7'8 wingspan

I think that is just a legend.
Dwight always makes fun !

dwight's vertical is 39.5 and javale's vertical is 31.5. Dwight also weighs almost 80 pounds more and that's all muscle.

there was a guy who went to my school who could stand under a net and put a dime on top of the backboard then jump back up and take it off.
There's a video of Will Chamberlain getting almost a foot above the rim with his hand and that means that's at least 13 foot
holy shit imagine nate robinson jumping a 61 vertical hahahahahah little fucking ninja turtle
Difference. Shaq had one attempt and didn't aim to get super high. Howard had several attempts and tried going high.
shaq that time is around 330+lbs, howard was listed above 280.... big difference
John cale wrong data
"Surprisingly belongs to Shaquille O'Neal?" I love how he insinuates that Shaq was never in shape. Shaq was a beast of an athlete when he was younger. If prime Shaq was brought into a lab specifically to break this record, I'm sure he'd be able to defend it.
you're absolutely right, maybe he was thinking about one arm vs. two arm reach, i dont know.
This is the real jump king
I don't think people understand the difference between a person's vertical leap and a person's vertical REACH. For instance, Nate Robinson has a higher vertical leap than Dwight Howard, but Dwight Howard has a higher vertical reach. Why? Because a person's height has to be taken account of. Just because a person jumps higher, doesn't mean he reaches higher. Ultimarely, reach is much more important than leap.
