I watched this video like 20 times easily when I was 13 to magnetise my first and only Carnifex model. 8 years later I'm back to do the same with two new carnifex models.
Great idea drilling out the sockets and using greenstuff. Thanks for putting this together. I know segments like these take a lot of work, and I am sure a lot of Nid players appreciate your efforts...I know I did.
If your ever want to drill on round surfaces just flatten it a little with filing it down flat just a little. That might make it easier. I can't wait to do this. I was wondering how I could get into this game but still be able to change up the weapons and that as I want.
Good advice. Any hardware store should have them as well at various price points. You really don't need the high end ones as they can cut through much more than your models...
Thats a really neat idea! I used blue tack and got told off by games workshop because it was so obvious but this method is so much more subtle...sneaky...
I believe all Studio variations, about 6 heads, 2 cannon arms, 2 crab claws, some Tyranid upgrades, 2 talons, 3 carpaces, the base to place it on, and the body. basically, you can make any Carnifex you wish.
alternatively and what i'd recommend instead of using two magnets - one on the limb and one on the body, use one magnet on the body and use a piece of steel in the limb...i've used tiny screws, i usually used flat headed ones, but in these areas a round head screw might be better, especially if you can get round heads the same diameter as the nubbly limb root that you would normally glue.
I use the GW hobby drill to make a small hole. Then I make it bigger with a screwdriver lol. Anyway i use 1/16 1/8 magnets for all my mini's works well on both fexes as well as smaller units. The magnets are smaller but still strong enough to hold the fex limbs on its body. So the damage to your model and the use of green stuff is minimized..
SO i am a very sad panda because i just started playing nids in JAN and i was recomended to magnetize my nids but guess what I DID NOT and i have used many of the extra bits for conversions on other nids already so now i have to decide if i want to get more and mag the new ones or rip the ones i have appart and ruin their perfect paint and get any sprues i would need for the extra items suggestions?
have you ever thought of putting the magnets in the body and little metal plates in the arms/heads... this way you don't have to think about polarity and will cost less (since magnets cost more than some normal iron)
Nice tutorial. I don't get the weapons and stuff but I understood the magnetization. I watched the whole thing and I found it really interesting. Warhammer seems like a pretty cool hobby. Might try it sometime xD
Besides the fact that you need to learn how to type, if you use metal in one and magnet in the other as you suggest, you need a stronger magnet. That increases the chance of it being so strong that it will pull itself right out of the socket. Bluetablepainting uses this technique, and they have a few problems with too strong magnets.
narutosakura144, Blue Tac is a kind of sticky putty that you can get at pretty much any arts and craft or stationary store. Most people use it to put up posters and anchor things without using permanent adhesive. I use Blue tac to attach my adrenal glands to the carapace since it's pretty hard to magnetize them nicely.
Hi. I've been following your tutorial and I've managed to finish my model (Tyranid Harpy conversion). I want to base spray the model but I'm worried about spraying paint over the magnets. Will they lose their grip at all if they get paint over them or not? Great tutorial :D
You dont need to magnetize the dread as you can swap the arms about anyway, try magnetising a space marine commander, i have magnetised all his arms so i can swap out his weapons etc. Its real easy to do once you get the hang of it.
Dude, AMAZING video!, gonna watch all the rest you've produced since I wanna start doing it too myself, (just subscribed) THANKS!, now, i don't know if it's just my opinion: the song is indeed very cool but it's a little too loud and after 15 mins watching the video it starts competing with the nice dude talking to us, that added with the uninterrupt camera bobbing motion made me a little dizzy - again, that's just my opinion. But in an overall, that's an excellent series nevertheless!! GRATZ!!!
love the video, although the polarity issues are easily solved by using a metal nut on one side instead of a magnet. great video "and that is how you magnify a carnifex" lol
The plan for my Nids i mentioned before. I will be selling most everything and then buying new boxes to magnetize. As i bought the army off someone else then even if i sell everything at half price ill make double what i paid for them in profit to rebuild my army. He sold them to me cheep $250 for a FW flyrent, 1 regular tyrant, 4 carnifex, 26 warriors, 40 geanstalers, 80 H-gaunts, 120 T-gaunts, and a few random metal models like metal warriors and old walking zopes. Of course im keeping some.
@TheKillmeifucan You can magnetize any model you want as long as the magnet fits in the spot you are trying to put it. Smaller magnets have a weaker pull than larger ones but on smaller models you don't need as must pulling power unless they just have some kind of crazy huge weapon made out of metal bits. If you used plastic glue and are willing to pull things appart then it is not too late to rebuild them and magnetize them. since i bought my Nids off some one else i can't because of super glue
thank you for that, i had thought about magnetizing my fexes and warriors but never had the nerve to risk messing up my models:=) i wonder if the magnets are strong enough to hold the wings of a forge world winged hive tyrant , it wuld sure make it easier to transport it to the battlefield
The Nids ARE a very awsome race indeed, but if you start jumping between armies, you'll end up like me. 5 armies and not one of them fully painted yet. The sorrow XD
I got a question. If I don't put superglue on the green stuff and instead, I directly put the magnet so its gonne directly stick to the green stuff, will it fall-off or it will stay in place?
I took a extra carapace i got from a friend that didnt want it and i green stuff the heck out of it and put a magnet on the back of my carnifex and the green stuffed carapace so i can convert it into a terigon when i need to, so my cranifex it magnetize like this and magnetize to convert into a tervigon too :D
Okay just a note. A cheap cordless dremel goes for about $30-40, you don't really need a stylus to work with modeling. Oh, and I just have to say that I was really impressed with your speed... before I remembered that you play nids so I can only imagine how many of those kits you have put together.
@onewingedangel2 It doesn't matter really much, it might make it a bit weaker if it alredy is a weak magnet, buf if it is too weak you can just scrape the paint off the magnet after it has dried (Sorry about bad english)
it would make sense to do the tyrant... but genestealers arnt as customziable like a carnifex. i guess u could but i wouldnt. its too much time per stealer
the metal the hive tyrant has is not magnetizeble so it will be like doing the same dam thing 1: you take a small drimal tool you can get one for 16.00 dollars at any homedepo 2: take the hive tyrant out of the box and start with the body drill a hole into the body but not to big just as you can see it 3: take green stuff how much a small bouncey ball size should do put the gs in the body push it in a orb of green stuff should be in your sight then super glue the magnets in
I watched this video like 20 times easily when I was 13 to magnetise my first and only Carnifex model. 8 years later I'm back to do the same with two new carnifex models.
can't believe how much better quality your videos are
'a moistened finger works just fine'......
Great idea drilling out the sockets and using greenstuff. Thanks for putting this together. I know segments like these take a lot of work, and I am sure a lot of Nid players appreciate your efforts...I know I did.
7 years wow,
back when Matt was the captain of the collage football team.
Awesome tutorial. I really appreciate taking the time to show us this. The idea of scratching the magnets is brilliant
If your ever want to drill on round surfaces just flatten it a little with filing it down flat just a little. That might make it easier.
I can't wait to do this. I was wondering how I could get into this game but still be able to change up the weapons and that as I want.

I like how in depth this tutorial is
Thats a really neat idea! I used blue tack and got told off by games workshop because it was so obvious but this method is so much more subtle...sneaky...
We don't currently offer that service, but it's a good idea, so we just may consider it in the near future...
I believe all Studio variations, about 6 heads, 2 cannon arms, 2 crab claws, some Tyranid upgrades, 2 talons, 3 carpaces, the base to place it on, and the body.

So simple, yet such a genius solution! Definitely going to try this the next time I build a fex!
@Zerg82 thanks, its just im making a space wolves army and im going to try to use differrent wargear for a differrent enemy.
Nice tutorial, this is one of you're best yet, making it clear.
No, even if it would hold ball magnets are still polarised in one direction so would only rotate in the same way a disc magnet would
SO i am a very sad panda because i just started playing nids in JAN and i was recomended to magnetize my nids but guess what I DID NOT and i have used many of the extra bits for conversions on other nids already so now i have to decide if i want to get more and mag the new ones or rip the ones i have appart and ruin their perfect paint and get any sprues i would need for the extra items suggestions?
@Hatchiroo you could cover them with tape whilst you spray, then remove the tape after your done painting
Was recommended today. Saw Baby Matt and had to click. lol
have you ever thought of putting the magnets in the body and little metal plates in the arms/heads... this way you don't have to think about polarity and will cost less (since magnets cost more than some normal iron)

i use toe nail clippers for the extra bits that stay on from the racks is that weird?
Holy crap putting green stuff in between the halves of the torso is genius. I'm definitely doing my 2nd carnifex this way.
Go to a hardware store alot of them have individual bits you can buy, sometimes you might have to buy a pack just to get the right bits.
I never really thought of this, but this is amazing. thanks for all the time you put into tutorials. It really helps.
would it be possible to magnatise smaller models like a space marine captain?
if so would you need the same size magnets or smaller ones?
This video was suggested to me in 2021, which is now. Hi Matt!
narutosakura144, Blue Tac is a kind of sticky putty that you can get at pretty much any arts and craft or stationary store. Most people use it to put up posters and anchor things without using permanent adhesive.
I use Blue tac to attach my adrenal glands to the carapace since it's pretty hard to magnetize them nicely.
Normal ones maybe but most of the ones bought for wargaming or normally sold are Earth magnetics so they last almost forever.
when is part 3 coming out???
could you make a vid on when you paint it???
Awesome vid! I will be starting my Tyranid Swarm soon.
Getting tired of losing with my Necrons......
@till357... A magnitized carnifex is exactly the same principal as a hive tyrant! They look different but magnitizing them is the same thing!
Hi. I've been following your tutorial and I've managed to finish my model (Tyranid Harpy conversion). I want to base spray the model but I'm worried about spraying paint over the magnets. Will they lose their grip at all if they get paint over them or not? Great tutorial :D

Did his stabbing with the super glue on to the model bother anybody else? No? Just me?
Ya im megga carefull he just threw it on !!! Lol
+MrBizteck that's what happens when you get them for free.
what pecies come in the Carnifex Sprue? do you get all of the biomorphs or is gamesworkshop cheap and only give you the basic ones?
Thank you for this. I love watching your tuts. Good stuff, starting my fexes today, and its gonna be a blast :) Thanks again.
Dude, AMAZING video!, gonna watch all the rest you've produced since I wanna start doing it too myself, (just subscribed) THANKS!, now, i don't know if it's just my opinion: the song is indeed very cool but it's a little too loud and after 15 mins watching the video it starts competing with the nice dude talking to us, that added with the uninterrupt camera bobbing motion made me a little dizzy - again, that's just my opinion. probably a stupid question !! Is it safe to spray paint over magnets or would it be better to spray paint first ??
love the video, although the polarity issues are easily solved by using a metal nut on one side instead of a magnet. great video
"and that is how you magnify a carnifex" lol
how long does the magnets strenth last for and when it runs out if it does what do you have to do
The plan for my Nids i mentioned before. I will be selling most everything and then buying new boxes to magnetize. As i bought the army off someone else then even if i sell everything at half price ill make double what i paid for them in profit to rebuild my army. Of course im keeping some.
I recently set about the task of magnetizing my 4 carnifex, this helped me enormously.
Oh and thanks for this tutorial, it has been very helpfull to me, could not do it without this..
@TheKillmeifucan You can magnetize any model you want as long as the magnet fits in the spot you are trying to put it. @2h4d0wDK theyre on the site under blue demon magnetics.
thank you for that, i had thought about magnetizing my fexes and warriors but never had the nerve to risk messing up my models:=)

great job! could you make a vid telling us how to make a trygon?
"Make sure you point it away from any faces."
I have a brilliant idea...
I got a question. If I don't put superglue on the green stuff and instead, I directly put the magnet so its gonne directly stick to the green stuff, will it fall-off or it will stay in place?
Yet, these games were designed by a UK company. They were put in inches because of their scale. The smaller model games like Warmaster use cM
you can use the same size drill bit since drills naturally drill slightly larger than there stated size
did you drill all the way through the back? please answer
Look at the baby face on this guy from TEN years ago. It's like traveling backwards in time to a younger Matt! 😲
if u paint over your magnets do they still work ? or can u better leave them bear ?
Would a 3/16" by 1/32" magnets work for a cfex or no?
The mini wargaming site is down or something, but if I had to where else could i get magnets?
I took a extra carapace i got from a friend that didnt want it and i green stuff the heck out of it and put a magnet on the back of my carnifex and the green stuffed carapace so i can convert it into a terigon when i need to, so my cranifex it magnetize like this and magnetize to convert into a tervigon too :D
Does scratching the magnet weaken it's polarity?
Is it possible to do this to the Hive Tyrant/Swarlord also?
Would you do how to magnitize a defiler and the video was amazing
i like that head that has like those bog ol ears comin out. like antenas? they look cool. gonna make a long range fex
Do you really have to mix the blue and yellow in order to use the Green stuff properly
awesome. but cood u make 1 were it shows you how to Magnetize a dreadnought and a predator tank?
nice tutorial but how high is the chance that the magnets get weaker ?
Can you magnitize a trygon
Okay just a note. A cheap cordless dremel goes for about $30-40, you don't really need a stylus to work with modeling.
Oh, and I just have to say that I was really impressed with your speed... before I remembered that you play nids so I can only imagine how many of those kits you have put together.
is there a part 2?
how many magnets does a whole carnifex use?
i would assume so, you could always ask at your local shop
the flat head bits arn't for drilling through stuff, they are for making allready drilled holes bigger
What is the toolbit number you used with the dremel?
@onewingedangel2 It doesn't matter really much, it might make it a bit weaker if it alredy is a weak magnet, buf if it is too weak you can just scrape the paint off the magnet after it has dried
(Sorry about bad english)
how long should u let ur green stuff set for?
does anyone know the name of this dremel tool? cheers
i freakin want that snowy board that matt was showing the tools on!
any haardware store should have an entire isle dedicated to drill bits
hey can you buy green stuff and what is blue track
I just Started collecting nids again and this video was made closer too when I first tried collecting them as a kid, too now dam I feel old now haha.
where do you find the dremel for 30-40$?
Really good videos guys, keep up the good work!
what are 3/16" and 1/8" in mm?
so how much would it cost
awesome!!! very clear and instructive well done
thanks for that idea!!
i´we been trying that n chaos spawns, and it works pretty well(need more magnets!!!)
how do you magnatise the base
i have just ordered my magnets and green stuff for my carnifex!
im in the web store, but i cant find the 1/8 X 1/16,
plz help me
please do a how to magnetize a tau battlesuit video
is green stuff enaugh for holding the magnets?
+IroncladIrony With super glue
why do you have ti mix it, why not just leave it blue... or yellow?
it would make sense to do the tyrant... but genestealers arnt as customziable like a carnifex. i guess u could but i wouldnt. its too much time per stealer
ah i see thx for the answer hmmm maybe i should buy some.... i dont know if i should use power claw or the power sword for my SM captian ;P
Was recommended today. Had to watch, also I actually do need to magnetize my ‘nids.
Would a 1/8 magnet (width) X 1/32 (height) work
the metal the hive tyrant has is not magnetizeble so it will be like doing the same dam thing
1: you take a small drimal tool you can get one for 16.00 dollars at any homedepo
2: take the hive tyrant out of the box and start with the body drill a hole into the body but not to big just as you can see it
3: take green stuff how much a small bouncey ball size should do put the gs in the body push it in a orb of green stuff should be in your sight then super glue the magnets in
