"Have you ever played a game that really made you feel" *first few notes of the Outer Wilds OST start playing* *Heart proceeds to skip a beat and I almost tear up*
I played Outer Wilds 4 moths ago and it immediately became my favorite piece of any media ever made. To me the game felt simultaneously cozy and haunting with the lovely music where there was life and the endless space around everything. It is also very technically impressive how they handled the whole solar system living it's own life independent of most of your actions. Edit 2 moths later: I learned some of the beautiful songs on guitar and now I love it even more.
I remember entering Five Pebbles’ General Systems Bus for the first time in Rain World. Seeing those wierd symbols floating in the background and then Random Gods starts playing. That moment truly made me feel.
Literally yes! Rain World does this so good, when you reach the top of the Wall, escaping a tense moment with a predator, receiving advice from a random god. Rain World is epic.
Random Gods, Moondown, and Sundown all have that same underlying melody and it really stuck when I heard Random Gods for the first time in the GSB. I just let go of my controls, closed my eyes and listened to the music, and it was one of the most beautiful parts of Rain World for me.
Amazing video. Some of my other favorite places in games that I really "felt" were the last level of Celeste, playing with Leshy one last time in Inscryption, the ending to The Beginner's Guide, the last It Takes Two level, and the entire game of What Remains of Edith Finch. Games can be such beautiful works of art.
I remember when I first entered Dark Bramble. I just went straight in, no fear, just accelerated the whole way. I am a rather scared person and am not the biggest fan of horror. Then I ran into the Anglerfish, and upon it's screech, I immediately quit to the main menu and didn't touch the game for a few days. Outer Wilds is my favorite game of all time BTW.
one of the best leitmotif's is the Soul of Cinder soundtrack from Dark Souls 3. The boss uses Gywn's theme and moveset in the final phase and it is one of the best endings to a trilogy of amazing games. No words spoken, but you know what's happening the moment you hear that plin plin plon
Gwyn Lord of Cinder really hit me in the feels. That track was just perfect. One game that hit me in the feels through cinematics is Modern Warfare 2 when the chopper opens and Shepherd shoots. Also, the last of us, damn it!😢
To me, the shock value of discovering that the world's over, and I can't do anything about it is what made the ending of Outer Wilds so great. I did not get that much feels, but I was blown away by the twist. It was a massive betrayal, and it was amazing.
I will always remember my first playthrough of Journey. On multiple occasions, I simply stayed in the sand listening to the OST for several minutes. One of the best video game experienced I've ever had.
One of the best songs/experiences that I've experienced (other than outer wilds) is when I was playing the deep stone crypt raid and after you've done the first encounter and boss, you go outside into space and...silence. And then the deep stone lullaby plays and it is phenomenal.
Htwo: "being cinematic is one of the key things to make player FEEL" Me: gets emotionally devastated by "To The Moon", which is a 2d top-down RPG without cutscenes, made in _RPG maker._
I also flew into Dark Bramble completely blind-- didn't piece together the hints of their existence whatsoever and flew in full speed. Still remember that.
I have to say that on UA-cam you can find the STs of both RoR and RoR2 with commentary by the one and only Chris Christodoulou(Apologies for the most likely misspelling) Highly highly recommend listening to them
I completely understand how much music can make you feel. The song “Pretty” from OneShot’s OST probably wouldn’t make sense to someone, as it has a lot of strange mechanical sounds and distorted notes. But when I hear it, it just takes me right back to one of the hardest moments I have ever experienced playing a game. (Would definitely recommend OneShot to anybody who bothers to read this)
outer wilds is very special for me because when i started playing it a gave myself a challenge beat the game without reading and when i did it after 41 hours of playing it felled amazing and now when i hear the music i just wane cry
Dude, I knew it that last song from the Saint campaign must have some meaning! I just couldn't know what was it! This was truly a moment that a game made me feel....
In Wartales, I made a mistake to run into a high level region and engaged with an enemy squad. I sacrificed 3 wolves so that the rest of the team could win the battle and get out of there safely. Gameplay wise, it was not that bad. I can just catch more wolves in the wild to replace them. But those 3 wolves have accompanied me since the beginning. They have fought coutless battles. They harassed many archers rendering them ineffective. They took strong blows from the enemy to save more gold from repairing armors. Lossing them was very sad.
every now and again you play a game and you have this one, single moment where you realise that its gonna stick with you for years to come. most recent for me was standing atop the wall in rainworld
I did a speech similar to this topic for public speaking but I focused specifically on the morality aspect. While researching I realized that games really do have a unique ability to make the player connect to their decisions in game and feel emotions through the game.
This has a lot of really great games, like Firewatch and Walking Dead, the later being one of my favorite games, but the only time a game has ever made me feel anything is when I randomly downloaded and started playing Minecraft again a little while back, after having not played it for nearly three years. I was just starting and was gathering wood when “Mice on Venus” came on. I remember just stopping and staring at the square sun-set while the last few notes from the piano played.
The first time i ever shed a tear at a game was Oneshot. The way the characters and the world are written is just... Its irreplaceable. I highly, very much recommend anyone to play the game completely blindly, its an experience.
One of my favourite leitmotifs is the "This is what you are" motif from Warframe. It is kind of a duo, a chorus of children and a female vocalist, mirroring the story, with a long lost, awakened from cryosleep warriors and their motherly guide. And at certain points at the story, this dynamic changes according to what is going on. Such as in the Apostasy Prologue theme or the small piece I Came Back For You.
I'd love a game that after multiple releases has you, in the last release go back to the setting of the very first game, seeing it was like destroyed, everyone left, some are dead, and your left there, wondering why you even came back, saying how you finished, your done. then you just sit and watch the sunset, as the game fades to black and ends
I swear I don't even understand what it happening in this game like what is happening, what does this game have to do with a medieval zombie apocalypse space game franchise??
@@ProbNotCross Don't Escape 4 isn't a zombie apocalypse game, but it does include some space motives. I'm not exactly sure what you ment to ask, but to my mind, the game is both emotional and memorable, while also being quite simple in its desigm
@@edekolechowski no I mean, what does it Have to do with a zombie apocalypse space medieval werewolf franchise? I know the game and ive played it, yet I still don't understand what is happening.

Little stuff like this is things I like, but, has anyone figured it out?
I think my favorite leitmotif is The Verse from Aquaria. At one point in the game, you end up singing this 8-note phrase to unlock the path ahead, and it turns out because of story reasons this phrase appears somewhere in nearly every song in the game. I had a blast combing the soundtrack for The Verse after that. It’s not my favorite ost any more, but it was the first music I ever spent money on.
When I fought the soul of cinder and heard the signature “plin plin plon” I deadass stood there and let him kill because of how hockey I was to hear this theme again
bro i remember when i was a simpleton rainworld player, and than seeing the skyline on the wall, than the city atop 5 pebbles, well, it was a feeling i haven't felt before.
i remember a few times where i'd show my grandparents some of the games i play and they'd go "wow, they really look like that?!" - even for games most gamers would consider "average graphics" or below (like DRG, Terraria, etc.) and it just kinda puts it into perspective on how most people don't know what modern games look like. They just kinda assume everything is similar to whatever they're vaguely aware of. it was one of those moments that made me realize something i'd never thought about before.
honestly one of the games, or mods that do leitmotifs well is the calamity mod from terraria. It’s reuse of some songs like Stained Brutal Calamity and, Raw Unfiltered Calamity makes you realize how much progress you’ve truly made in the world. Another example is the Astral Infection biome leitmotif, it id used for several parts, the meteor, the Astral infection biome, the Slime God, the Astrem Deus, the Astrologen Slime, The Astral Aeus, all of the Severants of the Scorge, and lastly, the Devourer of Gods.
another Leitmotif worth mentioning ties back to your Gwyn example, as the Souls of Cinder boss fight from Dark Souls 3 has a leitmotif of the Gwyn theme.
I know part of the thing about outer wilds is that you have to move on to new things eventually but I'm sad I can't really remember my playthrough. It would be nice to have the memories and let go willingly instead of it being metaphorically covered in vaseline so it falls out of my hands in a few months, you know. Anything I remember is like a plaintext recording of factual things that happened, not what I felt during them Sad
UT fans have been reversing, pitching, slowing, and speeding up themes to find the 4 notes of gaster in half the songs for years. If that counts your rainworld bit counts.
The two(or rather three) games that actually made me FEEL were Spiritfarer and the two Ori games. To this day, the Ori games are still some of my all time favorites for their cinematics, emotions, story, gameplay, and above all else, their music. Gareth Coker is one of the greatest music composers to ever grace this Earth, and his work in both the Ori games and Ark Survival Evolve are incredible.
I can't watch this video because I haven't played outer wilds yet and have somehow avoided spoilers for it this entire time, but I want to say, you have good taste in games! I think rain world and ror2 are among my favorites of all time. I'm very curious as to what you say about them but I'll have to come back after I play outer wilds o7
The same goes for immersion into the setting and lore. Just like you can't readily share a song without the context that makes it incredible so too can't you easily share the intricacies of what makes a setting and it's stories interesting.
haven't played Outer Wilds, but i noticed that the space angler fish are the only light source in Dark Bramble (or at least the clips you showed) and now i know that most people probably flew towards them to see what it was and got eaten by a giant space angler fish. and that's kinda funny imo.
Metal gear rising does something similar with its music with jet stream Sam when he has his sword he is singing the lyrics showing how cocky he is but as soon as he loses the sword he stops singing the music and the boss fight itself becomes harder because he is taking the fight seriously
This video reminded me of a relatively recent time a game I've played for years gave me feels. It was World of Warcraft, after the Shadowlands expantion (the second most recent of many). I had been exploring the shadowlands for about a month when I ran out of some resource or needed something hard to find, so I used my hearthstone to go back to Darnassus to get it off the auction house. My hearthstone, instead of taking me to the city's inn, to the lush inside of the huge, water surrounded world tree of Teldrassil. Took me to a starting zone on the mainland called Darkshore, its name now red and reading "Darkshore: Horde Territory" as I flew up above the trees to see that great tree stump gone. Burned to a crisp and inaccessible. I went to the nearby Timewalker, a person who could show me what had happened. The attack on the tree, how it had burned with hundreds still inside, helping people onto boats to leave the continent... As a worgen player, I had watched my character's birthplace fall to a curse and then rendered inaccessible by plague as her people took refuge in that great tree. Then, to watch her...my, second home be destroyed as well... I cried. A piece of me had died. The piece connected to that place, to that character who I had spent months grinding on, who was now a part of me. It was so gut wrenching I had to stop playing. It still stings. That personal of a moment will never be recreated, but I knew that hundreds of players also felt the sorrow and rage I was feeling. The feeling of having a place you called home destroyed... May Elune give peace to those who fell that day, and strength to the survivors who keep up the fight.
Everytime I get spoiled Echoes of the Eye, I feel a bit mad, but also relieved because had I found it by myself, I would have just litterally shat myself
The phrase “it’s just a game” is such a weak mindset. You are ok with what happened, losing, imperfection of a craft. When you stop getting angry after losing, you’ve lost twice. There’s always something to learn, and always room for improvement, never settle.
Thx for another reminder that I need to finish outer wilds finally. For some reason I keep on running from it... Bye for now. I'll let it play in the background muted.
I have a very great fear of deep oceans. So when i started outer wilds, i went to giants deep as some of the first things i did. I REALLY did not like it and i still dont. So when i learnt how to get to the probe tracking module, i was both intruiged and terrified. I went down the slow and painful route to the core inside the jellyfish, and when i reached the probe tracking module, I actually pissed myself. That was such a fucking memorable thing, and my friends still bully me for it.
Tarkov determination goes hard Dying and dying and dying and dying but not rage quitting. Gathering back your sanity and continuing and breaking that cycle and starting to win and not stopping.
Ahh, the metro series music just makes me tear up, when I loaded metro 2033 after a long period, the music in menu gave me that sense of nostalgia that it made me tear up
I quite recently beat Artificer's campaign (Rain World) in co-op, and the level of exhilaration after beating the final boss was incredible, unlike anything I'd experienced before. It's easily the ending I've had to work the hardest for so far, and easily worth it. Not anything I expected, having been spoiled for the ending beforehand! You may know how the story will go, but that doesn't take away from the feelings you get playing it. Even if you're dead in coop and your friend finishes the fight!
Although I haven’t played the God of War games, from what I can tell, the original trilogy is more cinematic than the new games. It uses more cinematic techniques to tell its story, and I have heard someone mention that God of War 2018 was more like a play, and yeah, I can see that due to the fact that the game is dialogue heavy and focuses more on blocking and movement instead of camera tricks and sound design. Not to mention that the action is pretty standardized, which gives me theater vibes. But I could be wrong as I haven’t played them.
This might sound Suprising, But Destiny 2 and a Small DS Game Called Catz Both made me "Feel". Cayde is a Beloved Character by Nearly Everyone in the Community. Its one thing we can all agree on. Bungie killing his Character off in Forsaken was A Bold (And Clever) Move. It made us Feel Angry, We wanted Revenge, and it made us Mourn. Many of us had been Interacting with this Character for Just under 4 Years (Forsaken Came out 5 Days Before Destiny 1 would have been 4 Years old). Catz? Right, Its Credits Song Punched me in the Gut Cause of my Late Pet Cat (It still does). The Credits Piece is about a Small Kitten Growing up and Exploring the World Around its home. The Lines that hit the hardest for me were "Im Just a Little Kitten, Hardly Fit my Mittens" and "Open Windows to Go from Flat-To-Flat". I had Grown Up with my First Cat, So i was very Attached to Him. Me Being a Lonely Young Child Interpreted this line not as a Growing up and Maturing But as a Leaving home and Never Returning Situation. I couldnt Get Past The First Verse Without Breaking into Tears. So much So I just hum the Tune and i tear up (Cause it also Reminds me of Him).
Find it very strange that when the topic of music and light motifs are brought up, and Oris ost is never talked about. Even when the game was shown multiple times. A bit upsetting that noone talks about it.

May Elune give peace to those who fell that day, and strength to the survivors who keep up the fight.
oh good you arent gonna spoil me the game i have played for 2k+ hours
Everytime I get spoiled Echoes of the Eye, I feel a bit mad, but also relieved because had I found it by myself, I would have just litterally shat myself
The phrase “it’s just a game” is such a weak mindset. You are ok with what happened, losing, imperfection of a craft. When you stop getting angry after losing, you’ve lost twice.
There’s always something to learn, and always room for improvement, never settle.
I love that this became a copypasta
7:47 I love how whoevers playing is just running away from the fire lmfao
I have played 1000s of hours of games and outer wilds is the only one that made me cry
the first time i cried in a game is the true end of binding of isaac repentence. (i became emotionally attached to isaac after playing for years)
the game that made me feel was Firewatch
such a good warm game
Have you ever played a game that made you feel something? Proceeds to play outerwilds ost
Me: wants to watch video
Video: there’s downpour spoilers in this btw
Me: ): damn it now I really have to finish that game
my iPad got birdied recently so I haven’t been to watch you as much
Tarkov determination goes hard
Dying and dying and dying and dying but not rage quitting. Gathering back your sanity and continuing and breaking that cycle and starting to win and not stopping.
The end of Metro 2035 made me cry a single tear.
Also Safi'jiva(Monster Hunter World) already did the music fade out before it was cool.
Ahh, the metro series music just makes me tear up, when I loaded metro 2033 after a long period, the music in menu gave me that sense of nostalgia that it made me tear up
Hyper Light Drifter is honestly such a ride
For the music part imma just say “Ludwig the holy blade” from bloodborne the old hunters
Even if you're dead in coop and your friend finishes the fight!
i remember playing assasins creed 3 when i was 11. it had the most beutifull music i've ever heard.
I feel with you bro
Outer Wilds genuinely changes people.
I felt something when playing ocarina of time something really emotional idk Why. 😅
The Walking Dead Telltale made me fucking BAWL more than anything else. I connected with Lee so much amd i couldn't stand him dying
I am starting to think you like Outer Wilds, Rain World and Risk of Rain, not sure tho.
(awesome games)
Babe wake up new outer wilds htwo video just dropped
Although I haven’t played the God of War games, from what I can tell, the original trilogy is more cinematic than the new games. It uses more cinematic techniques to tell its story, and I have heard someone mention that God of War 2018 was more like a play, and yeah, I can see that due to the fact that the game is dialogue heavy and focuses more on blocking and movement instead of camera tricks and sound design. Not to mention that the action is pretty standardized, which gives me theater vibes. But I could be wrong as I haven’t played them.
you dont want to know how much time ive spent just standing in the city of tears listening to the incredible music. hollow knight is incredible
Finely he talks about his favourite game, yeeeey!
I still remember when I played Hollow Knight and got to the fountain in City of Tears. Wait, so I'm not THE Hollow Knight?
I think the only reason I beat delirium 1st try is because of the music. Also probably because I had brimstone and other insanely overpowered items.
I love Outer Wilds!!!
So much So I just hum the Tune and i tear up (Cause it also Reminds me of Him).
strait vibes
Find it very strange that when the topic of music and light motifs are brought up, and Oris ost is never talked about. Even when the game was shown multiple times.
A bit upsetting that noone talks about it.
For real, this topic and not talking about ori is criminal.
1:02 motherfucker, outer wilds, rain world AND katana zero? I won't be able to watch this video for a whole year!
I just wanted to ask if you have been in videos with bigger UA-camrs, you sound very familiar so I am just binge watching some of your videos to figure it out but also because you have some great content
1:02 after i play these games i will come back for watch
for now see ya
15:35 this exact thing happened to me
I would love if you make a video on Frostpunk
19:00 yes.
Ok now you have to play subnautica, I swear, the distant cry of the reapers still fucking terrifies me so much and I just panic whenever I hear them. But its still just way to awsome of a sound to run away from.
Edit: So I played outer wilds... and... I agree. Thats it.
1:01 🥲 can't watch this video, i've only played 2ish of these
