Forget the GM A Bodies- the A60 Celica Supra is a favorite of mine. Love these MW News segments.

Totally with you on the A60 Celica Supra…was totally stoked about these when they came out….I remember C&D/MT comparing them with Z/28, Trans Am, Daytona, and similar GT cars of the time!

Once GM debuted the fwd A-bodies, the older rwd A-bodies officially became G-bodies along with their 2dr coupe variants..Monte Carlo, Regal, Cutlass, Grand Prix. They were still popular and sold well into the 80’s, alongside the fwd platforms with the Bonneville and 4dr Cutlass being the last to end production in 86’ and 87’!

Joyce looks like my 'ex" Giving me old 80s vibes...TOTALLY. 😜 PS The GM "A" cars ended up being damn good, The Buick and Olds versions made it into the 1990s! Not bad considering they were REALLY stretched Chevy Citations!

In reality, the V-8 was a "blip" on the radar over all. If you check out all US cars from the 1920s through the 2020s it is the SIX cylinder (V or I) that dominated US sales. The V8 was largely dominant from the late 50s thru the late 70s. That's only 20% of the last century!

Man those where the dark times for the American automotive industry! Crappy cars! The Japanese had the edge on them with them hot rod Toyota Supras!

I started driving in 1982. We were told that the V-8 was going the way of the dodo bird. Cars of the future would have 65-80 HP, and the 55 mph limit was a permanent thing.
I've seen a lot of older reviews where people comment about the reviewer getting excited about 180 , or even 200 horsepower. They don't understand how great it felt to know that there were cars coming (Other than some exotics) that actually had the power to get out of their own way.
Later, my Acura RL would be considered underpowered by some for "only" having 200 HP. Despite the fact that it could cruise comfortably at 85-90 with no stress.

Weird time over all. Yeah, American cars had crap build quality, and Japanese cars had good build quality BUT their bodies rusted away in a few years. I see WAY more 1980s American cars today than 1980s Japanese cars (MUCH higher than what overall sales were so THAT's not the reason..) Best bet then would have been a Japanese MOTORCYCLE!
