Spencer flat-out raised not only his sibling, but basically also her two friends judging by how much they were at his house, and they weren’t even his legal responsibility. He valued and respected Carly’s interests, regularly taking part in and promoting them. He kept her safe and made sure she was healthy, even keeping her inhaler despite her not needing it. He showed care for all three of the kids, not just Carly, and was both a friend and a guardian. He let Sam spend the night regularly in his apartment due to her not feeling happy at her own house and provided her food. He helped Freddie find his interests when his mother wouldn’t. And he did this all while maintaining rent for an apartment and working a job in an incredibly difficult-to-make-it-in career field. Spencer is the Nickelodeon MVP.
Amen!! And, he also kept them afloat money wise. I doubt their dad has enough time or even internet connection in every place they station him to send them month allowances. Especially when Spencer is an adult who can take care of himself.
@@eryuu4016 I mean Spencer didn’t get paid for his artwork until later in the series so unless Freddie’s mom was helping foot the bill, I think Carly’s dad paid for the majority of their stuff

Spencer is actually more responsible than he seems. Remember in the episode where Carly’s granddad wanted to take her back to Yakima with him? Spencer wouldn’t tell Carly it was wrong to dress like a goth since he thought it would hurt her self esteem while she’s finding herself and he even had a whole list of what Carly’s favorites were. He even kept the inhaler in his closet even tho she hadn’t had to use it in 5 years.
Yea. I think him being an artist was a good reason for him to not tell her she can’t dress a certain way. Of course he’s fine with her self expression thru clothing, but not her possibly dying or being in criminal trouble.

Spencer was right in the bad boy episode too like you noted. Not sure why we're supposed to side with Carly breaking his rules. Carly was really the bad guy when she didn't want to date a guy for liking stuffed animals. Wtf? That's so shallow of her.
I always think that when I watch the episode 😩 like he commits crimes and stuff & he really gives her enough reason to not like him but him having plushed animals? No way ! 😂
I agree. But also, it shows the real reason why boys try too hard to be bad boys who cause trouble: girls (and society has a whole) hate their soft side and so they just don't wanna be embarrassed.

As we all know, Sam’s home life is pretty horrible with a neglectful mother that barely feeds her to the point that even her best friend has to take care of her because her mom doesn’t care enough to. Spencer and Carly is basically Sam’s 2nd family now, from age 8 when she met Carly. And Spencer is always okay with Sam sleeping over whenever, eating all their food, breaking into the loft, etc. Heck, he makes sure the fridge is always stocked with meat cuz he knows it’s Sam’s favorite. I highly doubt all that food was for Carly.
Don't forget he also takes care of Freddy. He gives him male advice, helps him find and encourages his interests, and he lets him come over to vent about his mother all the time. He's basically all three of their second dad's.
@@eryuu4016 that’s true. It was kinda weird how all 3 of them only had a single parent. Freddie finally got a male influence in his life after spending all his time with girls
I would fully believe that if sam's mom tried something with her like hitting her for no reason and Spenser found out he would of gone fucking crazy on her ass
I think his lack of responsibility is a result of his parents not being there to teach him any. His dad is always away and we don’t have any mention of his mom
Depending on how long their father’s military career is it’s possible Spencer and Carly were military brats and their more relaxed attitudes are them being able to have roots and run to their own schedules. Certainly the lack of any mention of Mrs Shay implies she has long been out of the picture, as Carly doesn’t find Spencer’s looking out for her lacking and they’re both used to their father being absent.
@@jbcatz5 that’s true. I’ve known military brats and my stepdad was one as well as being in the military himself before marrying my mom. I do think that Mrs Shay’s absence may be attributed to either divorce, abandonment or having died long before Carly could remember her. Their mother leaving the family may attribute to the fact they never mention her.
ReyTheJediLady ViaJakku I’m leaning more towards divorce or something just as bitter. If it had been she wanted to settle down, the the show could have used that in some way and it breaks the whole concept of the older brother being the legal guardian. If she died, then there’d at least be a memorial episode. But we’re putting more thought into this than Dan ever gave any of the parent characters. It’s pretty messed up that between Carly, Sam and Freddie the only person who’s closest to a conventional parental figure is Spencer. He’s done more to look out for the interests of Sam and Freddie in a respectful way than Pam and Marissa combined (To say Marissa Benson would wrap her son in cotton wool if she could is an understatement). Not that Pam has much interest in being a mother, except for Sam to provide bail or free labour.
Icarly has this thing I like to call the revolving door of boyfriends and girlfriends. 1 goes in 2 come out. Every other episode they seem to get a new love interest that is never seen again.
The most successful artists are usually very responsible people. They have to have discipline and practice A LOT, so the stereotype of being an immature and “crazy” artist is very odd to me, because irl an irresponsible person wouldn’t be able to make a living off of art. And no, watching or drawing cartoons and wearing colorful shirts doesn’t make them immature.
@@ghettolicerx2 hm... maybe? i feel like he would've been too much if that makes sense. like his works are iconic and everything he's been in he has mostly been the star attraction spencer fits into the cast well. he stands out enough to make an impact, but he can still be a part of the B plot perfectly

Spencer is like a childish James Bond. He's got an equal sense of humour and cartoonish whimsy on par with early Jim Carrey. He's also got a higher body count than is reasonable.
Hey, why’d you assume he was cursed by a god? Maybe he was blessed with the power to light stuff on fire, and he just can’t control it. Either way, it definitely seems like it’s supernatural.

Spencer is amazing and i love this video
@@nataliaisa_newb I saw an interview with gibby a few years ago where he talked about the dan schneider foot thing and he said something to the effect "I don't wanna definitively say in case it gets proven wrong but that is kinda creepy"
First of all, great video as always! I loved how you brought up the episode iLook Alike. That has always been one of my favorite episodes in the series because it's one of the few times we see Spencer act more like a parent figure towards Carly. Also, don't forget Spencer's pranking addiction.
Glad you thought so. I briefly mentioned his passion for pranking early on in the video. It's only really touched upon in a few episodes so it didn't stand out as much as the fire gags.
I was literally just watching another video about iCarly when this new video popped up! 😂 Your law school analysis is really interesting. Spencer likely acts childlike as he spends all his time “babysitting“ Carly and her friends. If he’s not around any mature adults (especially after dropping out of a serious, mature environment like law school) Spencer can really only occupy himself with iCarly. He doesn’t have anyone else his own age to bring out his ‘mature adult side’. He is simply Carly’s adult big brother, which is why he tends to only act mature when he is being protective over her. That’s my take but it’s okay if anyone disagrees!
They did an episode on this. They tried to get friends for Spencer and he didn't like them. They talked about work and other things. He was bored. I get what he's saying though. Just because your friends are mature doesn't mean you have to talk about work 24/7.
Idea for merch: the exasperated facial expression you made when you were frustrated for being called racist when you were pointing out the racial stereotyping in icarly and victorious
About Spencer: 1) It seems like his father and grandpa were pressuring him at the time to become a lawyer, since Spencer was afraid that his dad realised he left law school. Then in 1st season, Spencer asummed the actual reason his grandpa wanted to take Carly away from him (rather than worry for Carly's safety/growth) was because he was mad at him for not becoming a lawyer like him. 2) For a crack theory: Maybe Spencer's dance (El Fogonaso) was mistaken as a "marriage proposal" by a fire deity who decided to burn his feet to say "yes, I do" ; since then, that deity sometimes burns a lot of things around Spencer as a way to give a good luck kiss.
Conclusion: spencer is a lawful good warlock under the guise of being a chaotic neutral NPC. Socko is his otherworldly patron, and spencer is too weak to channel is pyromancy unless he is experiencing extreme emotions. Spencer is the perfect DND character.
Gibby's dad is briefly mentioned. I can't remember which episode, it has to be one of the later ones because they're all in Carly's new room. Anyway, they're all hanging out and then you hear Spencer yell "GIBBY! Your daddy's here to pick you up." Like you said though, Spencer went on a date with Gibby's mom so they're probably divorced. If any of y'all are interested there's a very interesting account on instagram called danwarp.shows that gives a ton of behind the scenes info on Dan Schnider's shows. Anyway, there's a post about how the original plan was to have Carly's older brother be her guardian, however they thought audiences would find it weird that she didn't have parents so they were going to go back and rework it and make it a parent or two. But then they tested the pilot with some middle schoolers and asked if they thought it was weird that Carly's parents weren't around, but none of them even really noticed and liked Spencer.
I always loved spencer so much. He was my role model as a kid and your video pretty much summarizes and interprets his personality quite well. Great video
He's a Breton Pryo-Mancer who also dabbles in Alchemy. First he creates the fire. Then he uses fire to concoct potions, like the spaghetti tacos,... which heal 25 HP per taco. He is 2/2 of the best potion venders IG, next to T Bo,... who basically has the same potions, just,... on a stick.
I love your channel. I'm not even that interested in some of the analysis, but the mere fact someone is taking such series that were capital for me while growing up and taking them seriously, man, this is unforgettable. Brings tears to my eyes, no exaggeration.
Bro I wish there was an AU where Spencer stayed in Law school, and became a lawyer, but was still his goofy, loveable self. He could've been kinda like Phoenix Wright.
yeah they announced a few weeks ago that there’s going to be a reboot. Miranda, Nathan and Jerry are all confirmed to return, Jeanette’s return is up in the air. It’s going to be for a more adult audience apparently. I hope it happens. The Lizzie McGuire reboot was canceled because they couldn’t agree on making it more adult oriented or keeping it kid friendly.
I thought a reboot was a continuation tho 🤔 so is it a reunion or a actual show? Because isn’t a reunion like what they just did with the fresh prince where they all met up and just talked about the behind the scenes and what they’ve been up to since? I hope it’s an actual show and not just a reunion. Edit: ok I googled it l, I was confused since people keep calling it a reboot, it seems like it’s going to be a continuation (which is guess it supposed to be called a revival and not a reboot?)
You didn't know!? It was just announced and confirmed, if you look up iCarly it shows hbo instead of nickalodeon now because they bought it. It has all of the original cast except for sam
Jayni, I totally resonate with your interests in the Dan Schnider Limited Universe (Sam and Cat, iCarly, Victorious). I commend your work and knowledge because it’s a lot like mine (special interest aspergerian). Thought I would comment to say that Spencer’s character traits should be able to be derived from what we see him do or hear about his lore on screen. I don’t think that the intention was for him to have had a secret third thing happen. I really love this video. Thank you!!
Spencer is a good older brother who isn't overly protective of Carly most of the time. In fact he has only been "over protective" once by not letting her go to a MMA fight in fear that she would get hurt. He also isn't the brightest but is very artistic and creative.
Spencer manifested a stand through his love for sculpting; however, much like Cheap Trick, or any other stands of it's nature, it hurts him more than it helps him.... if it ever helps him at all...
Nice analysis of the fire gag! I like the comparison with both his emotional state and the supernatural curse 😍 I’m so tempted to list a million other characters for you in the future, but take a break first! You deserve it, Jayniac.
correction we've seen Gibby's parents while divorced both have been in episodes. Also side note highly implied in series Spencer and Carly's mom is dead. Also Sam said her dad flat out walked out on her, her twin and mom when she was baby
I didn't realize Spencer had so many gfs dayummmm. I think it would have been cool to introduce a long term girlfriend for Spencer, but (as much as I liked the character) he's a total man child and probably not long term relationship material. But I think it would have been neat to see him with a woman he's compatable with as well as see his lady have a stepparent-esque dynamic with Carly. Maybe well see him with someone in the revival (I think that's the right term)?
I hope in the revival/reboot, there will be character development with Spencer and that he will actually have a long-term relationship with a woman who is stable and fits his personality (the closest we had with him having a stable girlfriend was probably Veronica). Also, I would love to see insight into what originally drove him to going to law school at the time. Maybe he might decide to give law school a second chance and go back to school to earn his degree but also continuing his love for art. He doesn't have to completely give up art and maybe have art as a side job or a hobby while also doing law.
Hes goofy but in the end a great guardian. Takes care of Carly, encourages her dreams, and gives her and her friends a secure place to hang out. I remember the episode with their Grandpa where its revealed Spencer always carries an inhaler in case Carly’s childhood asthma acts up. And of course that even quitting law school he still can think up the arguments needed- he just followed his dreams.
Spencer had always been my favorite character throughout the whole universe between I Carly, Sam and cat, and victorious.....and crazy Steve was my fav character in drake and josh so like...yeah Jerry Trainor is great
I was just searching for spencer (like i do almost every day😎) and finded your video. This proves how good is to search for spencer every single day. Really good video.
I love this video! Just wanted to say about the iDate A Bad Boy point is that the reason Spencer looks like the antagonist of the episode (in my opinion, of course) is because he was perfectly fine with the bad boys criminal past when he asked him to help out with his sculpture; he then allowed him into their house and around his sister, (he even left them alone in the house together) and then was only upset about how he was a criminal etc. AFTER he and Carly kissed.

And remember who gave the motorcycle she uses until this day?
I would fully believe that if sam's mom tried something with her like hitting her for no reason and Spenser found out he would of gone fucking crazy on her ass
“he tried to put his lips on my face”
“her FAAACE”
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love how he always said thing to add dramatic affects
I think his lack of responsibility is a result of his parents not being there to teach him any. His dad is always away and we don’t have any mention of his mom
That might be an explanation. In the revival/reboot, I would love to get some insight into what drove Spencer into going to law school at the time?
@@Lauren_210 I think they explained their Dad wanted him to in the iWanna Stay With Spencer episode
Thank You for including that last bit

Spencer is like a childish James Bond. He's got an equal sense of humour and cartoonish whimsy on par with early Jim Carrey. He's also got a higher body count than is reasonable.

Yes! When you're only around younger people, you'll act like them and vice versa.
They did an episode on this. They tried to get friends for Spencer and he didn't like them. They talked about work and other things. He was bored. I get what he's saying though. Just because your friends are mature doesn't mean you have to talk about work 24/7.

About Spencer:
1) It seems like his father and grandpa were pressuring him at the time to become a lawyer, since Spencer was afraid that his dad realised he left law school.
Doing the Lord’s work, truly.
Conclusion: spencer is a lawful good warlock under the guise of being a chaotic neutral NPC. Socko is his otherworldly patron, and spencer is too weak to channel is pyromancy unless he is experiencing extreme emotions. Spencer is the perfect DND character.
Yooo Thats actually a really good idea
Great video

1. THERE IS AN ICARLY REUNION SERIES?!
and
2. Happy New Year Jayniac!
yeah they announced a few weeks ago that there’s going to be a reboot.
It's a reboot.
@@vanillamarshmallow The creator left and I think Lizzie wanted it to be more adult. The company didn't let that happen so she left.
A reboot means they're restarting...it's not a reboot if the original actors are returning to reprise their roles and pick up where they left off.
"I might be stupid, but I'm not an idiot!"

I commend your work and knowledge because it’s a lot like mine (special interest aspergerian). Thought I would comment to say that Spencer’s character traits should be able to be derived from what we see him do or hear about his lore on screen.
Also Sam said her dad flat out walked out on her, her twin and mom when she was baby
omg I am so happy to watch an analysis on him
I always had a theory that Spencer was born as fire bender and no one knew about it, not even him
I’m addicted to ur videos
I love them so much
I didn't realize Spencer had so many gfs dayummmm.
He doesn't have to completely give up art and maybe have art as a side job or a hobby while also doing law.
spencer is the reason why i like quirky weird funny adults i had a HUGE crush on him when i was a kid idk why
