  • Demo of a brutal Marshall Randy Rhoads Full Stack with a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom (Randy had a 1974 Custom). The Stack, which is a recreation of the stack Randy used with Ozzy Osbourne in the early 1980s, features two Marshall 1960 Lead cabs with G12T-75 Celestions (Randy Used Altec Lansing 417-8H in his 1960 cabs).
The cascaded channel, which is usually on the second input jack is moved to the first input jack on this amp.

This amp comes alive with Input I SECOND channel (top right) 🎸 The left channel is a standard 1959. The right channel has cascaded gain stages with the top Input full-on (Randy's "Ozzy" tone), the bottom right is -6db for hot pickups. The left channel Input I volume becomes Gain and the right channel Input II volume is the Master Volume.

I used to have a 1979 100watt Marshall Master Volume. This was sold to the guitarist in our band as I had just bought a new 'cleaner sounding' Hiwatt clone (I played bass). Seeing this makes me realise I should have kept that old marshall!

So you’ve waited 10 years to watch UA-cam?
This modern version amp is to be retired now cause it’s 10 years old already.
Marshall built this 2010 amp cause the old amps have all perished.
After 7 years Marshall sell off the spare parts for the amps.
Every 10 years you all line up at Marshall’s door and you ask for a new amp to be made for you. You don’t waste your time on broken stuff.

I saw Randy with Ozzie on their first tour together. This was at a small outdoor amphitheater/shed. The audience was mostly local musicians and Sabbath fans.
What a freaking GREAT show ! We all knew we we're seeing something very special. The rest is history, including all the other shows I saw Ozzie and Randy play at.
I also saw SRV at the same shed before he became famous. He was still working on his signature tone at the time.
    Good Times..😂

      No you don’t.
Gibson has superseded that method by now.
Where have you been? Out in the jungle?
There’s 8 different MXR distortion + pedals by now. Multiple 10 band EQ pedals, etc...
The bridge pickup sends 2 notes each time randy played 1.
The volume pedal added 3 notes for each note it gets from the pickup.
The wah pedal adds 3 notes for each note it gets from the volume pedal.
So, at this point, randy played 1 note, the distortion + pedal gets 18 notes.
The distortion + pedal adds 3times more notes to those 18.
      18x3 = ....

Just because we have a gazillion different variations of distortion and OD these days doesn't mitigate the beauty of the originals. Gibson built the hIFi loFi pickup.

They've made a small fortune out of it.

The MXR Distortion + was a key factor to Randy's tone so without it you can't really get close to Randy's actual sound. You need to plug into the top input of the 2nd channel also to get the cascaded channel effect.

      Pres 5, Bass 2 , Mids 5.5, Treble 6.5, Volume 1 6, Volume 2 6.5.
I wonder if it's a mighty distorted sound or perhaps just a slightly saturated crunch sound for the mxr distortion & eq's to take it into the hairy distortion.

Johan, need your input given your vast 4-holler experience. I have a 1959RR- my only SLP amp. Forget Ch2 with the cascade gain.
My question is whether CH 1 is hotter than a typical SLP? Given the volume taper, mine has very little headroom (0-2 being clean, 4-6 being stadium rock and 7-10 making no real difference in volume). I have to imagine SLPs have a lot more range on the knob, thus more headroom. But I am also thinking these have WAY more gain on tap exclusive of ch 2.
The reason why I’m asking is I tried a Tonebender 2 and have nothing but out of control wool until i back the volume to 2 or below... regardless of attack setting on the fuzz. My 2203 JMP OTOH handles the full range of the tonebender on all settings on the lo input and surprisingly sounds much better than the RR through the TB.

You probably already know that Marshall used the early Bassman for inspiration- yeah Jim went with bigger speakers but the DNA is there. I have 4 Marshall’s, all are very different. Not that I am not a big fan of Marshall, but as you expand your musical pallet you grow to see the place for a Vox AC 30 and a 12 string Rick, you learn to enjoy a vintage Les Paul going through a cranked Marshall blues breaker. Johan Segeborn this is from Max Norman, the producer of the records. Since Max is a Facebook-friend of mine I will ask him about the EL34s: NORMAN Yes, and it was a pretty advanced rig for the time, I suppose. He’d read somewhere about using the Variac [a variable power supply that can lower supply voltages and cause power tubes to saturate at lower levels]. He had a 100-watt Marshall amp, and we dropped the voltage down to 90 or 92 volts. That smokes up the distortion, gives it a creamier edge. And of course a lot of the effects came from his pedal board, the “chip pan.” [Ozzy gave this name to the setup because it created so much hiss and noise that it sounded like French fries-which the British call “chips” - sizzling in a pan. ]
