    the way you do giant sets has been great for my progress in weighted dips and pullups. less so on squats because my setup is just not very safe to really push myself on. ive been doinh a similar idea for isolation work but just a larger rep goal and shorter rests between mini-sets. pretty brutal and quick.

      same here. made great progress on squats. doing a heavy 3x5 is super daunting and can require a bit too much courage for 6am 3 days a week after a certain point during novice linear progression. but for some reason i can crank out 20 reps of my 3x5 weight in a pretty fast amount of time. my form has also improved because there are far fewer "just get it over with" reps and i'm able to spend more time reinforcing the correct movement pattern.

      @@JimSmith-z4v i think it works well with squats specifically because its such a big stimulus, so going to close to failure is eh and youre getting a lot more practice unracking/setting up and getting clean reps

    your strength standards are very reasonable. anybody training consistently for 3-5 years and with some programming will hit those within that time frame if not exceed it.

    Brother your strength standards are beyond reasonable.
    I have a partially amputated foot. I have. My heel and ankle. My foot is basically a hoof.
    I just got my squat back to 405 ( did it for real ATG in 2018) after an Achilles surgery in 2022 and a tricep tendon surgery in 2023. Both freak accidents.
    I can deadlift 500 (all time is 550) and I just got my pause bench back to 330. My normal has been about 325 for a pause.
    All time OHP is 215 ( before surgery I could always do 200/205. I'll get it back back though. Muscle Power Clean 1rm was 245 pre tricep surgery and I'm back to hang power cleaning. Just gotta get my front rack position back.
    All thanks to the Most High God, the big Spotter on high.
    Not saying this to look cool, but just to agree. All these things are doable if you just put the work in.
    I'm no competitive lifter. I'm a trainer and massage therapist.
    I'm also 41.
    It can be done y'all. Your limitation*** isn't the final destination.
    Appreciate the content Will 🤝🏿💪🏿

    The endurance standard seems low relative to the strength standards. 225 bench, 315 squat, etc. are all achievable for most men but probably require at least 1-3 years of training. An 8 minute mile doesn't really require any training imo, I think the only requirement for that for most men is a reasonable body composition.

    They are strength standards, therefore indicating a base level of strength. That means that someone has to be at least somewhat STRONG. Your standards in that regard are very reasonable. Maybe even a bit low, especially for women. My wife hit your numbers easily after less than a year of serious training twice a week haha

  • @evangaylor
    @evangaylor 3 місяці тому +2

    I think the female strength standards are kinda low tbh. I know that in vball and softball there can be a huge range of strength between girls, but I think that a 60kg bench is pretty attainable even within 1 year of hard training (in college) for a girl and I would consider that strong. Also maybe like a 90kg back squat and a 100kg pull would be considered strong. I'm biased though because I am a shot putter who trains with female throwers so I see them do 200lb benches and 250lb+ squats all the time lol

      Could be wrong, but I remember Will saying something to the effect of: Get the body warm, work up a sweat, get the joints loose and ready.
      I remember he would play games with his buddies, for example. Literally, like, a game of tag. Or, he would do Jumps and rolls.
      As a random dude on the internet, I'm doing Will's Hoss Olympic and I find doing the following really helps:
      A-Skips, Side Shuffles, High Knees, Karaokes, Hip Circles, Inch Worms, Cat/Cow, Bird/Dog, Dead Bug and pretty much an insect-named or dynamic stretch before the Explosive stuff really keeps ya safe!
      Hopefully, Will or the other "Hoss In Training" can give ya a better answer!

    Thoughts on using machines (like leg press, hack squat, leg curls, lat pull down, seated row, chest/shoulder presses, etc.) for health and fitness? What about for athletic performance?

    • @HumanAki
      @HumanAki 3 місяці тому

      Random guy on the internet here, friend, but using machines, generally, is for hypertrophy training in my (limited) experience, so, I wouldn't recommend it as the main focus if the goal is performance, generally!
      For performance, you can't go wrong with a barbell! I know that this was 100% the case for me and my boys.
      But, if machines are all you got, you can get pretty fit/strong with those...but I'm pretty sure you'll see better carryover into athletic endeavors if you used a barbell instead!
      Hopefully, smarter people than I can chip in on your question, because I'm curious, as well!

    Strength numbers seem fair enough for someone 190+ and has enough time to commit to training. Lighter guys that have a 9-5, kids, family etc. would probably find it harder to get heavier without putting on excess body fat since they probably have less time to train properly but still possible I’m sure

  • @vincentvaleur3573

    Maybe I have a skewed perspective on strength standards or maybe I'm just understanding exactly what you mean by "consider strong." When I try to answer this question I'm looking within the population of weightlifting adults. If you've been training for over 3-4 years consistently and can't hit the numbers you gave I would say they are weak. On the other hand, a 500 deadlift, 300 bench, 400 squat, and 200 OHP after training 3-4 years I would consider this person to be strong. Are they realistic strength standards for everyone, No. That's why I would consider them to be strong. The fact many people won't be able to achieve these numbers by definition makes them strong.
    Like 225 is a respectable bench it's just that if you're an average size male and you've been consistently coming to the gym and that's all you can lift seems to either indicate a lack of effort or lack of proper training.

    The way you have chains set up is kinda janky, in my experience training conjugate for a decade and using chains very often, it’s best to set them at a height that has 10-20% of the links de-loaded at lockout and 90-100% deloaded at the bottom of the movement. The hanging chain gives an added level of instability that is not conducive to dynamic speed strength work

    So far the strength standards are quite reasonable to me for strong people. Even being 5'7''/165lb bodyweight and not being a competition athlete they seem achievable to me with a bit of work and some months/years of time
