    That set of 500x5 pin squat looked tough, but I still think those single leg hops are tougher.

    What do you think about changing grips or stances during certain exercises to overload certain muscle groups more than others? Doing things like going from a chin up to a pull up, alternating each set or going from a regular overhand grip deadlift to a snatch grip.

    I completely agree regarding the lack of scrutiny and critical thinking in S&C.
    - I currently have a bee in my bonnet due to people saying that an exercise "expresses" a quality, e.g. rate of force development, but simultaneously doesn't improve that quality. What is the scientific basis for claiming there is any causation between how much a quality is expressed during a movement and its subsequent improvement from that movement? It seems baseless to me. How do you know that one movement that expresses quad strength, e.g. leg extensions, is any better at developing quad strength than another movement that expresses quad strength, e.g. squats? Is it always that the more "expressive" exercise is worse? or better? How is it physically possible that an exercise expresses a quality, but doesn't train it? and doesn't improve it?

    • @cheeks7050
      @cheeks7050 2 місяці тому

      I completely agree and have wondered this myself, the evidence is lacking and it's mostly intuition based. HOWEVER, through practical experience it turns out that this is basically true. Sprinting makes you sprint faster, stretching makes you access more ROM, Lifting to failure makes you bigger and stronger. I'd still like someone to prove it/expand on the evidence though.

    • @craigdoef
      @craigdoef 2 місяці тому +2

      @@cheeks7050 The biggest problem is that people say the opposite, they'll say something like "sprinting is an expression of your rate of force development, but doesn't directly train and improve it. You need to do X instead." Everyone knows that sprinting makes you better at sprinting, but this doesn't seem to click with some people regarding all exercises.

    • @cheeks7050
      @cheeks7050 2 місяці тому

      @@craigdoef Yep, I now believe that generally expressing a quality is the same thing as training it. There is some nuance and exceptions but they're mostly based on what's practical.

    I appreciate the not caring about anything but dunking a basketball. My Quixotic goal is to dunk a basketball (for the first time in my life). I can touch rim at 51. I've probably lost about lost about 6 inches of max vert since age 18, but that includes about 30 years of being pretty sedentary, and the high school years plus about 2-5 years I had almost no idea how to do anything about it.

    For an in season college athlete, would you do a more Cory Schlesinger style approach where you lift/train hard on Gamedays and practice days, and take off days fully off from sports/training
    Or a more similar model to you right now where you train basically everyday to a different extent, lifting, sprints Plyos, aerobic, even a short arm day here and there.

    I think you especially should debate if you're hard core for or against something. If you feel so strongly about whatever it is, defend your position publicly. If not, you're soft and your position/arguments to defend said topic probably sucks.

    If you keep it real (like I feel you do in your videos here), DEFINITELY do the podcast. It's perhaps a bit of a superfluous remark because I feel you'll almost surely do this (as per your debate remarks in the vid here), but also invite people who will hold different opinions a little bit or a lot. Otherwise it's just going to end up being a parrot show.
