John and Billy changed my thought patterns forever concerning music and it's adaptation to the human heart. Why people don't explore more in music, is beyond me. What a giant universe of possibilities. There are infinite formulas to explore and their sub-sets. A nice start to that journey is allowing it.
I've known his name for decades, but only recently have I discovered his incredible music. I wonder if Dawn is in 7, I'll keep trying to figure it out . . Smile of the Beyond is an utter, absolute masterpiece imo . . I've just realized his music must have influenced George Duke on one of my favorite albums, Faces in Reflection. Also, til now I never knew what John looked like! God bless.
This man has helped me understand time signatures when others couldn't. Thank you sir. I've been a fan for years and appreciate what you do for us little guys. I've really been trying to work on the technical side of my music and understanding time signatures is one thing I've always had trouble with. Your way of explaining it finally put it a way I could conceive it and incorporate it into my musical composition.
Thanks John for explaining the transition point. I think I found this by accident in 5/4 on the 4th beat and if I get a little lost I just aim for that beat and everything just falls into place. I'm going to give it a try with 7/4 now. Cheers Rob
People like simple things and what is shoved down their throats. Most people have a herd instinct + little time for hobbies or searching, or thinking. Blah blah blah blah blah ....♾
Why ? do you have a problem with se-ven ? In french we have less problems as the double syllables numbers begin only with 14 (quatorze). I find it difficult to count 5/5/7 (it's the title of a Pat Metheny's composition, but there are a lot of other time signatures in it), or 7/7/5 in Gavin Harrison's Nineteen days, but the logic of the pieces requires it.
Attempt to tap six triple-itz and add a taka at the end of the measure? Then you may find out that you will get a either a 10.25/2 or a 42/8 time signature.
Happy 82nd birthday to this legend.
Love devotion surender..........................

Very few songs in 7/4: Unsquare dance (Dave Brubeck), Money (Pink Floyd)...
Jeff beck said McLaughlin is the best guitar player alive
yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hard to argue with Beck. I love John’s playing, but I do miss Paco.
He's way more than a guitar player . .
That´s what John said about Jeff !!!
I would agree. John is so complete. As a player, composer, instructor, inspiring force, developer etc. etc.
Amazing!
Splendidly Impressive Indeed...

Have you ever listened to the theme song for the USA TV show Mission Impossible? Classic, classic use of 5/4.
Thanks for sharing
This made my day, thank you very much!
I’m feeling it John, great advice from a master.
More please 🙏✨
And yet, no one ever heard of Gentle Giant, and Madonna made millions...

Is this segment from the DVD "This Is The Way I Do It"? Curious, I am thinking of buying the DVD set.
Completely lost me mate! Mind you , I probably don't need to know this as I play in a T REX tribute band.
Condolences, the dinosaurs seemed to be nice creatures.

How about the rhythm in "lockdown blues"? Is it 10/4?
get this -- Dance of Maya is in 6 and half 4 time . i asked the bass player of Mahavishnu backstage .

It's like The Ocean by Zeppelin is it not?
Or, "Money" by Pink Floyd.
It's the beginning of Trilogy. I could hear McLaughlin and Jan Hammer trading solos all night long to this pattern.
Or the end of Cinema Show, Genesis
The beginning of the ocean can be expressed ,amongst other ways as a bar of 4/4 then a bar of 7/8,or one bar of 6/4 then a bar of 3/8.

Huh? LOL a musical scientist.
7/8 and 7/4 are very common in indian or arab music. Nothing intellectual here.
What is the song?
From the begining of Trilogy (Album between nothingness and eternity)A7 and Bm7b5/A arpeggio ,
@@Serdaraxx thanks very much!
