There is big difference between homeless people and welfare fraud people and people who have multiple children they use like livestock. Homeless get little or no help from the government and sleep outside. People like this woman get free rent, free food, and free money and live better than many people who have full time jobs. Saying the law should ignore welfare fraud and instead go after working people who "cheat" the taxman who is already robbing them blind is to me a very naive and ignorant viewpiont and has nothing to do with the sick crime this creature commited against her own child.

I very much enjoy watching Dr Grande’s analyses. As a Brit living in the U.K I’m unfamiliar with many of the cases covered but they’re always interesting so that’s of no consequence. Having said that, I’m always delighted when U.K perpetrators/cases are analysed.
I remember listening to an interview with Karen Matthews on the radio during the period Shannon was ‘missing’ and she rather proudly said that two of her children were twins. It soon transpired that she didn’t understand the meaning of the word and genuinely believed that because two of her seven children had the same father, they were ‘twins’.

Apparently during Shannon’s rescue one of the attending Police Officers said something along the lines of “It’s O.K Shannon, we’ll soon have you home with mum” and Shannon replied that she didn’t want to go home. I didn’t hear this first-hand so I can’t say it’s definitely true but, all things considered, it doesn’t appear to be beyond the realms of possibility, does it?

@@beeimaginative “5 years for murder” is beyond exaggeration! There are always awful anomalies in any criminal justice system. Short prison sentences for serious crimes are generally only handed to children.
If a murder is 1st degree with premeditation, assault, torture or an underage victim, etc then a “full life tariff” is often given. That’s the equivalent of “life without the possibility of parole” in America. Life with the possibility of parole after 25 - 40 years is the norm.
People forget that after a murderer is sentenced to prison for hundreds of years in the USA, it’s quite common for them to be paroled eventually. All countries in the West are rethinking their criminal justice systems. Having a HUGE number of prisoners who know that, no matter what they do, they will never be released makes prisons in the USA very violent & near impossible to manage ‘properly’!
No ‘properly’ managed prisons allow the abuse & rape of prisoners to such an extent that, “Don’t drop the soap in the shower!” jokes are normalised!! 😳🤬 In the developed world ONLY the USA has endemic rates of prison rape! WHY??? 😳 It’s an anomaly when in happens in British, Australian & European prisons.
When a man is sentenced to prison it’s the prisons responsibility to keep them safe from torture by the other inmates. How would you feel if a family member made a stupid mistake, went to prison, only to be brutally tortured?!?

I am always confounded by attacks on welfare recipients as a whole, but I have a good example of just how much a part of society it is to demean and humiliate these people.
After my parents divorced because of my dad's alcoholism and extreme violence, my mom was a single mother of three kids aged 7-11. We lived in "the projects" and mom received food stamps. Even as an 11 year old I felt so much shame standing at the checkout while my mom tore out those little paper vouchers. I didn't even really understand why I was ashamed, but I knew that there was something shameful and embarrassing about it.
Within two years of the divorce, she was off food stamps and out of the government housing. Before I turned 18 she had bought her own house. She was very proud of herself and I was proud of her. She had worked so hard to get there.
Then she met a man who is now my step-father (I gag to say that) who was the antithesis of everything my family was. He is like the poster child for the fringe right-- guns EVERYWHERE, votes Republican no matter what, etc. I remember going to a cookout at the lake with them and he had packed his AR-15 and a few other assault rifles to allow the KIDS to target practice with. The final straw for me was when my boyfriend saw that he had made a post on his Facebook account that made a joke about Obama being murdered like Abraham Lincoln. I haven't spoken to him since.
Anyway, my mother started posting random similar nonsense online as well. The one that will forever stand out in my memory is a post she made saying that she thought every welfare recipient should be required to take random drug screenings and, if they failed one, they should be kicked out of the assistance program(s). I was stunned to say the least. Both my parents were major potheads when I was growing up. My mom, even after meeting Mr. Right-Wing Nut, was still snorting pills, smoking weed and drinking alcohol regularly. She smoked weed, did who knows how many drugs while she HERSELF was on welfare. Yet here she was, saying that people who did the exact stuff she had done shouldn't receive the help that she had received and that had been the only reason she was ever able to get back on her feet. She was proof that doing recreational drugs from time to time did NOT mean you were incapable of moving forward in life and up the social ladder but she was acting like even smoking a joint should be enough to take away a person's chance for a better future.
There is something deeply ingrained in our society that makes people feel the need to look down on anyone who is "beneath them" on the social ladder. Even if you were once one of those people yourself, apparently it is okay to spit on them and try to make things even worse for them. It is pretty horrifying and makes me incredibly sad and angry. I don't get it at all.

I'm from 🇬🇧 and remember both this case and the other you mentioned, little Madeleine McCann who remains missing.
It was such a relief when Shannon was found, Social Services put her her into foster care with a new family and gave her a kitten which she loved. I hope she grew up to have a happy life. Her "mother" was only in jail for a few years before she was photographed enjoying day release which ment she was completely released not long after that. People were not happy at the short time she spent in jail.
It's very difficult to feel compassion for people who actually choose to become welfare funded mothers using the system to fund having children, sometimes many children, (not those who are abandoned or widowed which is so sad). I knew a girl when I was young who set out to have 6 children on welfare and saw nothing wrong in this ambition which she achieved though her life was hard being stuck in a small house with so many kids and little money. That was before we had rules about the father's needing to contribute financially. Having children deliberately without the consistency of their fathers presence just seems all wrong to me, but that's another subject. Welfare seems more generous these days where children are involved, as single mothers seem able to afford fancy nails and hair-dos now a days, unlike before. Or maybe it's all paid for on credit which is another massive issue.
But when it comes to the sick and old people, that's where there is so much poverty. Being poor and living in social housing can often mean being stuck living close to groups of illegal drug takers and their attendant criminal behaviour, which I know from talking to many elderly people who've been moved to my area away from London and this is what they all say they had to put up with there.
Reading through my comment it sounds so judgemental, but everything I've said after the subject of Shannon are observations demonstrated Infront of of my own eyes over and over.
All you can say is what you see and hear personally.

Dr Grande, thank you for being so compassionate in your delivery for this case. I am from the UK, and this case highlighted how much vitriol and judgement there is towards the working class in Britain. It's disappointing to see how much the press and government used her social status as a scapegoat for her behaviour. Suggesting she was entirely responsible for her actions because she was 'lower' class, rather than focusing on social inequalities in the entire system or other contributory factors.

Nothing to do with the working class. The working class works. She made sure she didn't. We all know people who abuse the benefits system. Generation after generation of them. They waste the taxes the working class earns. It's not as rare in the UK as Dr Grande's statistics might say: officials don't get told everything. By the way her accomplice would never think of asking for police protection. Living on the edge of society, no way would he trust the police.

I am wondering if animals have psychological clinical labels. My dog shows signs of narcissicism, psychopathy, plus being a liar & a con artist. He went into a jealous psychopathic rage & bit a new dog because I petted the new dog. I put him out of the house in the cold to separate them. Cold below freezing never bothered him, but when I went outside to check on him, he started to tremble like he was freezing. (He was being a con artist to gain my sympathy to get back in the house, & he was a liar about being cold.) He acts stupid when he doesn't want to do as he is told. Although he acts stupid, he reveals he is a thinker. He runs in the house like a streak of lightening to make sure he gets the best dog bed. It seems he has several disorders.

I'm glad you pointed out that, while it is immoral and illegal to commit welfare fraud, it is exceedingly rare. It is quite difficult to get away with. People do it, so it technically exists, but the risk/reward ratio isn't something the vast majority of people would think is worth it. You have to work pretty hard to be that kind of "lazy".
It's wrong, it shouldn't happen, it should be punished but it's focusing on a tiny splinter in the eye of the system while ignoring the giant log of, like you said to point out one specific example, tax fraud/evasion.

THANK YOU on making it very clear about people who are on welfare, and how welfare fraud is far less rampant than people think... rather an unintentional (or intentional) misunderstanding of the people on welfare and the circumstances they face in their every day lives. I think the saddest part of this (this case and those facing misconceptions around welfare) is the children involved... whether their parent(s) are actually abusing the system or not, the children don't get a choice in the family and economic circumstances they are born into, and they suffer right alongside their parents. It's incredibly disheartening that often as a society we turn our backs on these family and point the finger square on them rather than the issues that cause and continue the cycle of poverty and lack of resources to help increase upward income mobility. They're far from easy issues to tackle, and there are many factors that contribute to the cycle of poverty, but that doesn't mean that we should come up with excuses and unfounded reasons to effectively throw in the towel on trying. *end rant*
Love watching your videos, Dr. Grande you've somehow been able to make your videos not only fact based and informative which offers a deeper understanding of these cases, but your dry sense of humor gets me every time. Often times I come back to your videos on more "well known" cases after watching other videos on it to see what your input is as a trained psychologist and overall genuine human being. It's a good reminder that we can feel empathy towards people who do bad things... I would argue that that is one of the keys to helping end cycles of violence and crime. If we don't understand the "whys" behind criminal behavior, there is no hope in trying to stop it from happening in the first place.

yeah, after shannon was found the press reported loads of suspicious behaviour by her mother. apparently the family had their telly on, and were watching a live broadcast of their own house. shannon's mum was amusing herself by moving the curtains and watching them move on tv. another time someone's mobile had rung and their ring-tone was a song that shannon's mother liked, because she'd got up and danced to it, supposedly while her kid was missing. another story that came to light was that the madeline mccann fund had been going to send some money, but police had advised against it. evidently they'd been suspicious all along. an almost unbelievable scenario, but apparently something similar had happened in a soap-opera and that's maybe where the family got the idea.
