Canadian here... I want to send you my heartfelt thanks for using your platform to highlight the story of a murdered Indigenous women. Unfortunately, this is a terrible problem in some areas of Western Canada and I hope that videos like yours will eventually bring the perpetrators to justice.
Surely anyone anyone getting murdered is a terrible problem. Why indigenous women specifically?

This is from my home town, the police should be ashamed of how they "handled " this investigation and this killer is still out there .. alot of people here are actually pretty sure who he is as other women recognized his voice and have been lured to his farm with promises of work.. RIP Amber ❤

I watch a lot of true crime videos and I have to say that the RCMP seem particularly indifferent and incompetent, although they do seem to be very fired up about enforcing the mask wearing mandate.
Is it really an epidemic? I mean do indigenous women go missing more than anyone else once you control for things like high-risk lifestyles?

Yes this is important coverage, the RCMP has been failing Canadians, enabling predators to prey on the vulnerable. Amber's story is just one of many who loose their lives in across the nation, without recourse. Thank you for telling her story.

Agreed. One constructive critique I would offer is that he sometimes comes off a little pompous and judgmental toward criminals and the mentally ill. Sometimes rightfully so but it does stick out sometimes for someone so obviously credentialed in the field.

There's a long history of the police in Canada ignoring the calls to help indigenous women. They immediately assume things about them. It's terrible and an embarrassment .
Right. Up to 4000 Indigenous women and girls have gone missing in Canada over the past 30 years. We'll never know the exact number.
Broke my heart when you said it was the person part of missing person that the police didn't believe applied to Amber. They didn't see her value as a human and she was deemed unworthy of investigation. 🥺
Easy saint Louis Illinois didn’t solve a single murder for entire years! We are talking 80 people per year, not one solved. The victims could be White or Black, nobody cared. Now the Illinois state police are supposedly going to provide help.

Dr. Grande thank you for publishing this case which is only one case from many similar cases here in Alberta; A province which has in the past been a richer province than other provinces were in Canada with more resources for the R.C.M.P. to be doing a better job but they often don't when a victim is suffering from extreme poverty. A province where there are lots of oil fields surrounded by communities filled with indigenous people who are living in extreme poverty. Oil fields in which international oil companies have made unbelievable amounts of money. Companies looking to do uranium mining have been doing successful exploration and mining here in Alberta too. Some people who work for those companies from time to time are openly hateful towards any indigenous peoples who might collectively or individually own the mineral rights on their property without later getting any justice due to them at all for the horrible pain they have caused their victims and their victims families.
Wow!! You've just described exactly what has been happening, and continues to happen, here in Australia (one of the other many commonwealth countries). Only here, It's more about minerals and ore as opposed to oil etc. The death rate of indiginous people whilst incacerated (prison or police lock up) is around 410 and counting, in a 25 year period. NOT a single charge against a corrective services officer/police officer has ever been made. That's a hell of a lot of suspicious deaths and a hell of a lot of , 'we couldn't find any evidence to prove any officers guilty. Hmm. That's a lot of death and yet, a lot of unknown causes. They just seem to mysteriously die in custody and nobody seems to know why? And sadly, the police wonder why they don't feel they are getting the respect they...deserve?

I have seen a fair amount of news stories surface lately about police corruption in Australia. 60 Minutes Australia has a mind-blowing episode on UA-cam about police corruption in NSW that was at the top down! We're talking serious organized crime involving even murders! A woman who was a prostitute brought the whole department down. I can't remember her name, or the title of the 60 Minutes episode, but the woman was at the center of the episode, and I think the word "prostitute" was in the title. And yeah, the update on the story at the end of this episode said the trend continues, and that since this shocking event, no police officers in Australia have ever been charged with any crimes. So glad you commented here!

@@porkbeans854 Sallie-Anne Huckstepp is whom I think you're referring to, her boyfriend was shot by Detective Roger Rogerson in suspicious circumstances in the 80's, then she was later found dead in a park after speaking out......lead to Royal Commission in NSW into Police Corruption back in the early 90s. Rogerson will die in jail, convicted years later for another unrelated murder......Very similar historical case in Western Australia where I live, the murder of Shirley Finn, probably by Police, many parallels to Sallie-Anne's death.

I think, when it comes to indigenous women in 🇨🇦, the RCMP isn’t as prompt to continue the investigation. It is quite sad. There have been many cases of such women being murdered and nothing being done

Bit of a myth actually. The solve rate for Indigenous Canadian women is more or less the same as female murder victims overall. If the cops are giving them less attention they are somehow still getting similar results

This level of police incompetence and indifference towards our First Nations people is sadly quite common. It's hardly surprising given the racism prevalent within the RCMP and general population as a whole.

Sad how indigenous woman are treated like vermin. The RCMP have a long history of not caring about these victims. Says a lot about discrimination against natives and there judgements and assumptions about being valueless. People treat dogs better.
It's sad how poorly they are treated by society but even sadder is no one treats their women worse than indigenous men. Indigenous men should be their biggest protectors and advocates. Instead they have the highest rates of abuse/murder in the west. I pray for them 🙏.

Just listening to the final analysis of your thoughts Dr. Grande makes me wonder if the police may even know who he is yet they pretend to not know. Could he even be a policeman himself? Maybe even has some connection with someone in the law enforcement?... Bizarre and yet reckless how the police don't seem to have the urgency to solve the case to get this serial killer off the streets. 🤔😒

thank you for being so vocal about the flaws of the "investigation" (or rather non-investigation) and also sensitive to the minority issues in this case. the part about the police not seeing Amber as a person almost brought me to tears. hope the killer, if alive, will be found and punished as soon as possible and won't harm anyone anymore. one thing makes me curious: did all three poeple who came forward after the release of the recording indicate the same person independently, in three separate calls? it would be quite a coincidence.

I feel you but how would he know that the police didn't see her as a person? Just assuming because they are white and she is Native? Especially coming from him when he does case after case after case and clearly sees that pretty much 70% of ppl, around the world, aren't happy with the investigation of any given case like this. And that sentiment occurs universally. I would like to know though how many Native missing/murdered North American cases like this get solved compared to the general population of like cases get solved; Like 10 to 1 or whatever. Also, I am sure there are rules when dealing with Natives and on certain land, I believe officials from the greater U.S and Canada need special permission to investigation of Native soil. Or something I am not sure. And they have their own police, correct? I'd like to know how successful are the BIA on solving these crimes.
Either the entire world's police are incompetent or maybe all this is an illusion. Like police give the illusion that "justice" exist. or that there is safety out here. Police, 8 out of 10, show up after the fact and then will rely solely on the bad guy messing up. So that bad guy has to fuk up and the police have to be excellent. O.K, well, you go ahead and do that math. Real talk tho I think that police should have to watch videos like this. Not necessarily from Grande, because all content creators mostly have some bias, but still it would be worth it for them.
We are on our own out here. We have to take care of ourselves. We have to take our personal security/safety seriously.
So at this stage in the game private crime solvers should be the way forward. And No! I don't know if this isn't already a thing someplace or not. Instead of sitting around online complaining It would be nice if there was a program to where civilian 'true crime' lovers could help solve these cases. And maybe even get paid.

What a remarkably smart woman to stay on the phone knowing it would be recorded. It's a shame that her efforts were in vain due to the incompetence of the police. I'm not from Canada, but I have heard of a degree of racism against First Nation people. The police not thinking of her as a person seems to suggest that racism was present.
When my daughters were young i explained to them in detail that hitchhiking was very dangerous and to NEVER ever get into a car of a stranger and what could happen if they did get into a car hitchhiking. Risk behaviors can kill

Not a day passes that I don't. He makes you see the reality out there and how devastating it is and to always be on your guard. Most interesting is the way he presents the case talks about the case and gives his opinion In Some of his cases I have cried. it's hard to believe that there are people out there that are that terrible and just don't have any empathy at all.

Would love to hear you analyze Dr. Patrick Henry's case. He was the subject of 2 movies and a book. The movie creeped me out so badly as a child, that I never forgot it! He was called a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

I sincerely hope the killer is caught and for law enforcement to treat all missing persons cases with the diligence they would expect if their near and dear turned up missing.
Unfortunately, it's not unusual for the police to ignore or mess up a case involving an indigenous girl or woman. It was both incompetence and racial bias, I think. The media is terrible about covering these cases as well. It's a huge problem here in the US and Canada and many Native people are trying to raise awareness about it every day. Heartbreaking.

I’m U.K. and cannot fathom a whole road(highway of tears) with such a chilling reputation, and nothing is done? No cameras, no regular patrols, no checkpoints, no killer(s) caught. It’s like a practice road for newbie and experienced serial killers. Very sad state of affairs.
I've lived in Edmonton for over a year. It's no secret there that the police does not care about (missing) natives, if you are familiar with the highway of tears you know the sentiment among the RCMP. With several bodies dumped in this particular area just outside of Edmonton, it's certain there is at least one serial killer active in the area (or at least has been). The fact that the RCMP is not releasing most of the recording to the public is typical. They are known to be experts at not solving cases, and making all the wrong decisions during an investigation. They are clearly not going to solve this case, so why not release the full recording so that the public may be able to pick up on something in the recording? The arrogance, incompetence and racism among the RCMP is astonishing.

Canadian police have a long history of being racist and not caring about minorities.

It says a lot when analyzing missing people and murder cases leads one to focus more on the police than the perpetrator.
But in this (and other) case(s) it’s totally appropriate.
The most shocking thing about this case is the inaction of the force we all pay to and rely on to act on just such a case. ✌️🤔
This case has ALWAYS made my skin crawl.... The recorded phone call with her brother Paul whom was in jail is LITERALLY haunting.... Amber KNEW something wasn't right....

Hitchhiked with my wife probably close to 100 times over the summer along the Continental divide, never had one problem.

For decades or longer, Indigienous Canadians have been trying to get justice for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Their experience is often exactly like the scenario Dr. Grande described here. This kind of callous neglect of duty is ubiquitous for first nations women in CA and USA. While the RCMP might not have been motivated by racism, their negligence was and continues to be racialized when it involves Indigienous folks..

My oldest son met a RCMP in a bar when the mounty was in SF for a conference. The Mounty was also First Nations and my son bought him a drink on account of him having the same tribal affiliation as many of my in-married relations on my moms side. During the evening, the talk revolved around cases like this and similar ones in the states. Compounding the issues of straight out racism, classism, and apathy, there are a whole network of laws initailly meant to ensure autonomy for regions, states, provences, indigenous groups, juridictions, become quickly outdated and clash against eachother in a way that make meaningful cooperation and investigation nearly impossible. It can be done, but it requires agret deal of administrative work and effortand a very small grain of disintrest at any stage can disrail the whole process. As a result, the tendency is to dead hand such investigations, even if those investigating at the ground actually do care. infuriating, but the whole system needs huge overhauling on both sides of the border.

Truly disgusting! Highway of Tears and Robert Picton murders had/have the same capable investigators. The call was interesting because the driver said they were going south initially where Ambers' body was found then corrected himself to say north and Beaumont is north of Edmonton. 50th Ave is south of the downtown core and closer to Leduc.
This case was always so sad to me. Not only the police incompetence towards a native case but the fact that her son had to grow up without her.
This story has always disturbed me and I can't watch the Oilers without thinking that the killer might be at the game.
I love listening to dr Grande , his voice is very pleasant and he is Easy to understand . I think my english has improved a lot since I started to follow him . I tried to follow some other youtubers, but they speak too fast and they usually are loud and overly excited so I soon become tired . Plus the cases he analyzes are always very interesting . I sure am glad I found this channel.

Your analysis of the RCMP not considering Amber a person is sadly I believe spot on. There is an epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women in this country and in the US--and it's been allowed to continue because of the biases of the police towards women, indigenous women, and high risk women. Dr. Grande, here I am from Alberta, and I missed your initial release. I agree hitchhiking is dangerous, so much so, that the City of Calgary has made it illegal to pick up hitchhikers, due to an incident that happened here. Calgary is the second city to Edmonton.
