With a focus on ease of use and key functionality, this might be the PERFECT PDM for those new to the game.
Sam Hiu Bin of CWI Performance runs us through their planned 10 output "Industrial Power Distribution Module [IPDM] unit. Off the cuff this looks to be a great option for those looking for some basic PDM benefits without any unnecessary complication or costs!
So, what's the catch? Honestly, there doesn't seem to be one. While this isn't a solid state unit with essentially unlimited configurability, it also isn't promising to be or priced as such.
SPECS:
- 10 channel PDM max continuous current @ 100C 15 amps.
- Testing and demonstration completed 60 amps inrush and 30 amp continuous output in normal interior temp specifications.
- Channels 1-4 rest at ground so they can operate as a H bridge to operate polarity reversing DC motors.
- Antenna for RF 13″ long 18 AWG wire recommended.
- Controller originally designed for utility truck bodies to control banks of door locks, lights and other accessories, but not limited to just this.
- High Current sustained applications and external relay / solenoid should be used.
- Unit in Deutsch or Amphenol HDR 24 pin black and gray header connectors with black case.
- Consumer version uses CANopen, CWI can custom program for OEM applications with J1939 or marine NMEA0183.

This is the proper direction for the industry. Produce simple and inexpensive PDMs to entice more consumers into this growing market.
Definitely some limitations but that’s to be expected at this price point. This is absolutely a step in the right direction! Good stuff 👍🏼
One of the wiring job I find boring is wiring relays, fuses and switches... But many peoples still use these as PDMs were still pricy until this.

If this was an option a year and a half ago I would have done this for sure!
Now I'm looking at getting the Aim PDM 32.
This will be a game changer for any car enthusiast. Anyone thinks that spending this small amount on a vehicle needs to find a cheaper hobby . I’ve seen the blinkmarine keypad and would use it that said I was quite surprised how cheap the motec ones were . A very good package though for anyone wanting to ditch the horrible old fuse box and relays . Solid state PDMS I agree are still a bit on the pricey side . We’d still probably have to go for a full solid state setup for our race car but would definitely consider this PDM for our fast road conversions .

Super cool! Definitely filling a missing and desired product segment.
Sounds like this sits closer to something like sPOD than it does to a motorsport PDM, but that's no knock at all. That segment of the market has been long under-represented. I'm excited to see where they take this product!
500 is a killer deal. when doing a custom relay/fuse panel, you can easily get that close just in wire, connectors, consumables, relays/fuses, and parts and a PDM replaces most of that and programmable to boot! definitely keeping an eye on this product for my build.
Comment for the algorithm. More people need to see this
If it talks with megasquirt and Maxxecu, then this is awesome.
I appreciate the simplicity that a solid state pdm delivers but I can’t help but think that transistors don’t transfer 100% of their input where a relay only looses through resistance and the small draw from the coil so this is probably a good idea and should sell although the faster switching and variable output is something I guess a relay based system will miss out on. but overall I can see this system being popular.

You got me... Started watching thinking this is the one, then find out it's just a relay box 😏
I allso missed whole point off this cause it still needs solid state relays. All most every ecu can do all this with solid state relay connected.
How do the ecus do current monitoring?
Yes and no - check the actual spec', and you will see it's an interim step between a conventional "fuse box", and a "conventional" SS PDM.
The former uses individual switched inputs, the latter a bus type interface - if you don't get that, you shouldn't be commenting...
Remember, not everyone has the budget, or need for, a true SS "relay box".

I do understand the difference, I can't see the point if you want to simplify and add control/reliability to the system.

This techy side of automotive makes me wonder if in the age of "green" propulsion, ICEs will exist to cater to people who wanna spec and build something for their needs, kinda like building PCs in the gaming market

You could also call a solid state PDM an expensive fuse box if you wanted to and many people do.
At the end of the day if you don't need the features that an option like this or a solid state PDM/PMU give you, then spend your money elsewhere for sure 😎 - Taz.

The Moristech Black Box PDMs aren’t much more expensive than this and work great - and they are a real PDM with USB connectivity and software support.

I don't see why not, but you won't be running it through the Haltech software if that's what you mean. It will be an independent system in that respect - Taz.
Damn, 500 bucks is considered cheap for one of these?? Guess I'll be sticking with fuse boxes for the foreseeable future!
yeah its more expensive but price up 10 relays, 10 toggle switch especially ones with specific etchings on them for certain applications, 50m of cable and terminals and youre easily at $150-$250 bucks if you arent using the cheapest components available
can someone put in dummy terms whats a pdm and what its used for?
Have a nose here, noting this one is in between a traditional PDM and a traditional fuse box. An untechnical term would be a 'fancy relay setup' 😂 It has some of the functionality of a traditional solid state PDM without ALL of the drawbacks of your traditional 'fuse box' - Taz.

6 channel vs 10 channel. Industrial design with DTM connectors vs. exposed terminals. These are really 2 different products that have different customers in mind.

I'll take a nose. There are some auto settings on there, so say if you posted something that got reported a bunch, you would get automatically suspended or potentially banned depending what it was.
BUT
It takes two to tango as they say for that to actually occur to be fair. No one reports random posts, it's hard enough to encourage people to report actual spam, useless comments that help no one or abuse let alone having them do it randomly - Taz.

Now they have to work with the financial side of the Stand alone ecm’s.
We have blown apart some of the he more expensive ecms and not for nothing they have less than $250.00 in electronics in them , and honestly they are not the best of the electronics world as far as reliable pieces . Too busy making them pretty than making them reliable .
You have cheap options like Speeduino. It has limited features, but it's cheap and if all you want is cheap, there you have it really.
You don't need to cram an ECU full of electronics to make it worth anything, it is the development you are paying for, and support.Thousands and thousands of hours of clever people's time simply costs and yes, that cost can get up there for sure but there are many options on the market to be fair.

Why does a product like this exist? There's better and cheaper ways to do this
I was kinda wondering the same lol... I think people are just scared of wiring or have some weird vendetta against a toggle switch, so they look for the easy button. To each their own, I still think carburetors are an excellent choice for most any race application and man, mention that to someone under 40yo and get ready for the display of ignorant personal attacks lol.
i just cleared 40...It looks like this product is aimed at a diy market. what noticable benefit can a amateur build vehicle/racecar really get from a pwm controlled fan. U get oem looking aftermarket switches for windows or anything u could ever want in a car and resettable fuses are older than me! @@Jared45513
@@Jared45513 idk pdm and keypads are awesome. I too like carburetors. Tuned some carbureted applications with motec pdm, keypad and dash setup.
You can do so much. You've got the buttons plus you can do combinations with maths. Like multiple buttons pressed or holding a button to create another switch/function.
No doubt, it's way better but for my personal race car switches it is still 😪
And as far as the dash... it does things a gauge can't. You can program oil pressure warning to rpm, easily setup plenty of warning indicators, data acquisition...

PDMs should be alot cheaper than what they are, the components are no that special, the software can be written cheaply by someone who knows how.
It's one of those things though, it's easy to say this, but really if it was 100% accurate then PDMs would be already be cheaper. There are many companies making them, there is no monopoly on this tech.
They are not 'cheap' but worth mentioning they have come down in price dramatically over the last 20 years as it is.
That said, if you want to put together some top quality PDMs and sell them for a lot cheaper than anyone else we are all for that, dive into it and prove me wrong! - Taz.
@hpa101 they are doing less than an ecu but cost more🤣 I can build the hardware side no problems, if anyone wants to help with the software, it's on like donkey kong👍
@@Mike-ry4ti A cheap laptop can do alot more then even a very complex ecu but thats not reflected in the price
