  • I took my 2007 Mazda RX8 to the track with new cooling mods. Unfortunately, it was so hot out, that my engine was still getting too hot. If you have any ideas of other mods I can do to improve water temperature cooling, please let me know in the comments below! Enjoy the video!

    Get a tune for the fans to kick on sooner, thicker foam around the radiator, FAL490 fans. TREX Performance can get all that for you. Also hood vents that are closer to the front of the hood would help dramatically reduce back pressure on the radiator.

      I'm liking the idea of a carbon fiber hood with vents too. Also carbon fiber won't absorb as much heat from the engine and the sun as the black steel one. I will look into the fans too, thanks!

      yeah I agree
      I was an 04 RX-8 Owner and as you can see we can do more with less, that is why I love those engines. I think you can upgrade the Oil thermostat from IR performance = it seems like an inexpensive mod. Here, check this link ua-cam.com/video/VgxgeM_sYnY/v-deo.html

    Since this video is several years old, it’s probably too late, but I used to have the same issues overheating when tracking my RX8, and know several others that did too. The way I solved the problem was airflow. Nothing else worked, but now I can track it on the hottest summer day with no issues. First, get rid of the stock intake. Racingbeat intake just as bad, the point is to get rid if that huge box. AEM intake will allow much more airflow through radiator. Add some ducting (I used aluminum, but foam should work too) to force all air to go through the radiator, rather than escape around it. Then add hood vents (Good-win Racing is what I used). No need for carbon fiber, just get a stock hood from a junk yard, it will be plenty light and fitment will be perfect. For winter I put on the non-vented hood, summer or track day the vented. Four bolts, very easy. If you do this you will not have any more problem.

    Bad news. I just changed my oil cooler thermostat to 180. I track my RX8 at Blackhawk in illinois and Road America in Wisconsin with max 200 Fahrenheit. Stock radiator and A/C still installed. You did a lot of unnecessary work. Remove your catalytic converter and premix 1 oz per gallon.

    I ditched my regular Mishimoto fans and got Mishimoto Raceline edition fans that produce way more CFM than stock fans. These fans coupled with fan relay manual switch mod, saved my butt on drift day when ambient temps were in the 90's

  • @DanMarcelino

    Hey bro, get rid of the thermostats in the oil coolers.. it’ll take some grinding etc unless you find short bolts that fit. Also get some tuning software so you can set both fans to come on at the same time at whatever temp you want. I use VersaTune and I have my fans to come on at 75 degrees celsius and with the oil cooler mods, stock rad and mishimoto thermostat, I never see above 90 degrees (that’s about 194 f). Also I’m planning to run an additional radiator connected in series to my stock one and place it in my under tray laying flat. That should make it much more efficient at cooling

  • @ColdTreyWingo

    Haven't seen anyone say this yet. The undertray is also very important to cooling. I also concur with oil cooler tstat replacement. Its a bit on the costly size but worth it.

    I live in Thailand. Pavement temperature was around 40c. I have tried everything. Overhaul engine, thicker radiator, bigger and earlier radiator fan, anti-cavitation water pump, earlier thermostat, battery relocation, vent hood, de-catalytic converter, CAI, drill plastic behind oil oil cooler, water wetter, high grade engine oil, heavily premix. Overheat issue did improve but only by less than a minute. The only mod that make a different for me is aftermarket twin oil coolers without thermostat. I ran 30 minutes plus non stop in race track with water temperature stable at 102-103c.

    Try the Cusco top radiator cooling plate its good for -3 degrees. Also take out your license plate grill and open every hole in it good for -6 degrees. If you haven't yet buy the larger aftermarket sump which adds 600ml of extra oil and cooler temps. One guy here in Australia also took out a section of plastic material in front of the front wheels to allow the front oil coolers to operate better this also dropped his temps on track. Bonnet vents also help.

  • @TheEddysGarage
    @TheEddysGarage 4 роки тому

    Great video. Try more water and a bottle of Water Wetter to get those temps down. You could also try some weight reduction to reduce strain on engine, brakes and tires. Back seat, passenger seat and a Lithiumax battery are easy ones, go 2 piece rotors next time and lighter wheels. Also please do up your helmet and wear a long sleeve shirt as a minimum. It might be hot but burning flesh is hotter.

    Try a tune for the fans, plus replacing them (possibly with an aluminum shroud), you can add a vented bonnet and if you're still not happy with these changes you can probably go ahead and add an electric water pump ( it removes completely the thermostat so I assume it's just for track car).

    The brake squeal, was that your pad compound?
    If u can find someone that has the software to hack into the ECU to change stuff, the simplest of things is to turn the fans on sooner. Factory fan low speed kicks on at 97C (206.6F) and then the high speed, "Please cool down cause I'm about to die" fan speed, kicks on at 102C (215.6F). At that point, you're already in the position to have to slow down. I had mine tampered with and I turned my low speed on at 92C and high at 97C, so a 5C lower temp kick on of the fans. Some use the relay mod with the temp gauge to turn the fans on sooner. Did you remove the padding from inside the engine bay? That stuff also traps heat (might as well remove it if you're only gonna track this car). In general, other ways of letting heat escape the engine bay are probably a good way to start. You can get some washers or spacers to put on the hood hinges to make the rear part of the hood stick up about an inch to let more air flow out of the engine bay (not sure how effective that is, but I've seen it on a few RX-8's).

  • @evansgful

    I recently removed my low temp thermostat which made 0 difference on track and blocked bypass in thermostat housing. I had a spare, so gave it a try. Car takes twice as long to warm up BUT the cooling on track was significant. somewhere around 97 c. My location is tropical so ambient is hot. Regular highway driving will send temps into 80s. I may try modding the thermostat so that the flow is better to the radiator and retain the stock warm up times. Car is 05 rx8, 6port, stock radiator, single stock oil cooler. 20-50 mineral oil.

      In general this idea doesn't work because of high pressure zone at base of windshield; you'll be cramming more air into engine bay raising under-hood pressures especially behind radiator. Hood vents do a better job for helping a radiator do its job.

    I highly recommend the ECU Reflash. Your fans will start sooner, your OMP will use more oil, and theres some timing changes on the shutter valves that improve torque, and the best one yet... 10K REDLINE! Also you can delete the thermostat as this car is not a daily.

    • @1cipi

    • @1cipi
      @1cipi 4 роки тому +1

      @@joselperez9384 the rev limiter is there for a reason. Firstly most rx8 engines are poorly balanced, secondly, your injectors can only put down so much fuel at that rpm, so you risk lean spikes. Sure, ecu tuning an rx8 is very benefical and i have invested myself into mazdaedit, but my revlimit is untouched.

    • @joselperez9384
      @joselperez9384 4 роки тому +2

      Dalvaru Ciprian Your right, my tunner ask me what mods did i have before reflashing the ECU. Mazda put a lot of limitation on RX8 for Emissions regulations. When those limitations are gone, is a brand new beast! For example, when you press the clutch and released the throttle, the fuel cut off immediately, when you disable that and let the Throttle body and injectors to close gradually, the engine behave much better when up shifting.

    for cooling you want to focus on making the air pass through the radiators and not so much on ramming air into it, although ramming air can help but what good is that if doesn't really have no where to go except for a high pressure zone. Hood vents are your answer and if you want to diy your own use a magnehelic gauge. Keith Tanner of flyin' miata has some good info hood vents: ua-cam.com/video/MCXhU0IeyTg/v-deo.html.
