Yea the side seal clearance info is sparse on YT. I should have put a video together years ago to help you guys out because most people don't understand how important it is to get it right. Most failed rebuilds are because of people not knowing how to do the proper clearance. As soon as I get a blown engine, ill put that very DETAILED info out there and it will cover all generations of rotary.
@@baxrok2. Well most people are lucky having a platform like this. No such thing existed when I attempted my 1st rebuild back in 95 as the internet had just barely launched. Us early folk had to learn the HARD way. Lol!
Aye, I’m bout to put my engine in my car today. Got mine from rotary resurrection. It looks beautiful. Hope it goes good, congrats on your engine starting!
To confirm, a .004” is the correct clearance, but .006” should work just fine. The important thing is for it not to bind. Your mistake was doing a .002” which jammed the side seals. You did such a fantastic job everywhere else on your rebuild though. Loved this series and hope it helps others who want to rebuild their engines.
Damn that must take a lot skill, I wish my 8 would come back to life I don’t have a lot of money for diagnosing it, but hopefully one day I will know what the problem is :(
Your happiness brought me happiness!! Congrats man, awesome work! Keep up updated on the street port! How does it feel? Also, maybe check out Elite Rotary shop in Schaumburg Illinois, they just came out with a new turbo kit for the RX-8
This was so satisfying to see. I’ve been watching for so long and to see you in a shop rebuilding your engine with a rotary pro makes me wish I would’ve just let my rx-8 sit until I could afford repairs. But at least my passion and interest in them lives on thanks to channels like you. Keep up the content brotha and congratulations on a new build with lots of compression! 💯
@@singlecell2498 currently going through this process because I just bought my RX-8 back from the guy I sold it to. I’m gonna get a used engine and transmission combo for ab $2800 and hope for the best. My engine lasted over 100k miles so I hoping I’ll get by with a low mile used one. Plus ab $1000 in labor since I’m paying a mechanic I know at the dealership I work at. Roughly $3,800-$4,000 if you’re kinda lucky on a mechanic. You can save hella by just doing it on your own.
Great to see! I'm going to go triple check my side seals now before putting it back together. The Mazda specs are a little misleading. 2 thou (0.05mm) is way too tight and binds up like you experienced. But it's what Mazda put in the manual 🤷♂️
See, I'm keen to pull apart and rebuild a rotary. Well it kinda goes with the territory. The only thing that scares me is the looks I'll get walking out of the pharmacy with a massive tub of Vaseline for the rebuild.
I'm loving these series so far and it is only making me want to buy an rx8 as soon as I can, the first 2 things I'll do to it is a rebuild and a bridgeport to get those sweet sweet braps going!
Not to burst your bubble but just know there is little to no power reason to go to a bridge port. The rx8 already has the largest intake ports compared to other 13b engines. Going with a larger intake port will cause you to lose all your low/mid torque while ruining your fuel economy and drastically narrow your power band.......yeah you may gain a few hp up top, but losing more on average across the lower 7krpms sucks.
Im rebuilding mine thanks for this video. I am happy for you to get it running. I'm sure this will happen to me when I finish my rebuild. Also how much did it cost you?

Literally the only build series that I get excited for. Can't wait to see what's next! Also how can I score one of those sweet Japanda tuning stickers??? Wanna rep on my RX8!
Porting the Renesis isn't really a good idea. There's not really much if any power to gain from it, and you're really only serving to cut your fuel economy down and worsen mid-range drivability. Mazda already squeezed as much as they feasibly could from these engines at the factory. Porting makes sense on the REW because the exhaust ports were located in the housings, whereas on the Renesis it's on the irons. There's hardly any room to work with there, and you aren't gaining hardly any power (maybe 10 or less) and it's not worth the tradeoffs at all. I love the content though. Just trying to spread some knowledge around. The more people understand about rotaries, particularly the Renesis the better.
totally disagree. If anything, all renesis motors should have the exhaust ported as this is the biggest issue they have with heat build up, carbon buildup which kills most renesis motors. Mazda made a sacrifice moving the exhaust port to the irons to improve emissions to meet the strict euro emission rules. It's not advice I would give any rx8 owner. The exhaust porting should be mandatory in any renesis. Intake porting is minimal gains so porting intake if your are not modifying anything else isn't worth it especially if you are paying someone to do the work. REW and earlier motors all have intake ports on the irons so they are not different than the renesis. at least smoothing the ports aids airflow and reduces turbulent air into the combustion chamber which you want.
Hey brother that was a great video with lots of awesome information. Can you make a suggestion though? What is the blue silicone like sealant he is using while closing the engine ? Also we want an impressions after the street port video ... How much faster does it actually feel ?
I was going to ask the same question re the blue sealant but i think it's to hold and aid the seals during assembly. I also have a second question which is why was he applying JB weld to the front plate?
Wow, I felt sorry for you a week ago because my turboed RX8 was finally running great(after 10 years of rebuilds) But I just blew mine up again yesterday... I changed my waste gate actuator to a 7psi one and I drove 5 min and it over boosted to 18psi and leaned out and f-ed it again.... currently removing it to see the damage (✿◕‿◕✿)
I'm very interesstred in RX8 but it was never 'the right moment' to buy one! I have the same plan to buy a blown engine. But before I rebuild the engine I would flood the combustion chamber with diesel, petroleum, white spirit or aceton a couple of days. In these days rotate the engine by hand, reflood, flood to clean the gaskets, seals and springs! White spirit or petroleumis one of the most effective cleaner in industry. WD-40 or engine flush ... are most petroleum! Insert 50ml or 2fl. OZ white spirit some miles before oil change you would be astonished about the effects to the engine with the new oil. After this flush the engine, start it ... test the compression. If engine will not run better or start, rebuild it now.
