Wow I wished I had a teacher like you when I was learning! I had to teach myself before try outs ...Sac City Rollers ... The first time since 7yrs old , at 26 I got up on skates and looked like a new born baby deer lol I fell within 30 sec right in my tailbone! I never gave up though! I started skating to and from work ...about 1 mile there and back .I figured if I could skate on the street I could def skate on a nice smooth wood floor! Teaching myself on the street was hard but I knew I'd be better for it because of all the different obstacles, textures and surfaces! I would show up to work bloody and banged up lol! When it came time to try out it was easy! I was invited to skate for the team but had to unlearn some bad habits and wished I had been taught properly!!! Unfortunately it, turns out I inherited my dad's weak ankles!!😒 and broke one of them while practicing...well just standing actually. Lol ! One of my ankles just gave out and kissed the floor while I was still standing! Yeah! I just came across this channel and now I’m binge watching all your videos! I ordered my first pair of skates recently (Moxi Beach Bunny) and I’m trying to learn as much as possible. Can you do a video on the best ways to get better balance and skating on one foot? :)
1st pair of skates!!!!!!!!!! Congrats and welcome to the world of roller skating. Watch crossover video coming out for extremely simple off skates balance exercises.
Dirty School of Skate awesome! Thanks so much! I have watched so many videos from different people -- you and Indy Jamma Jones are the only ones I’ve been able to learn from 😁
DD, how much pressure to put on the back foot? And on which edge? What's the weight distribution once you're in t position? When I do the t-stop the wheels make loud squeaky noise and I'm not stopping fast enough. I'm afraid to press too much thinking I'll flip forward. 🤔 Thank you!
Do you recommend having toe stops or toe plugs? I keep plugs in my skates currently but I’m also learning to skate backwards & I’m not sure how I’m going to be able to stop effective/ quickly😳😂 & I’d looove to watch vids on what skates, wheels, etc you recommend & like☺️
You need actual toe stops in order to do certain moves. Toe plugs are used to protect the floor from the metal plate. So learn how to skate with both set-ups for maximum fun :) When skating backward and beginning to stop, put weight on one foot and slide the other skate behind you in a arch … like drawing a backward "C".
I have an almost new pair of RollerBones Turbo 92A Speed 62mm wheels which are described as Medium Hard Indoors. They feel very grippy so I feel uneasy when I try to T-stop. I just saw your reply on someone else's comment. I feel the grip of the wheels is problematic. What do you think? Thank you Dirty Deb. You're amazing!
Another awesome video... glad I watched until the end😂😂😂😂 ... I saw a comment on here about bushings? Do you have a video on that? I put new wheels & bearings on my entry level riedell skates, now I'm curious if bushings should be replaced 🤔🤔🤔
Yeah that ending right?! So funny. I was laughing so hard. ok … bushings/cushions … I am going to do a video on these little gems alone! Stay tuned! Question … how long have you been skating on them?
@@Dirtydeborahharry not long at all honestly... I'm probably not changing them anytime soon, but I figured I'd learn how the different hard & soft affect the skates & maybe try softer ones eventually... my plan is to use these entry level skates for a year or so before I upgrade to some really good ones... really having fun tho & obviously this cardio is way better than a treadmill😂😂😂
@@bflo5210 Hey, it was my comment about bushings. Just FYI, I've only been skating for 3 months. My rate of progress is much faster since changing the bushings (I practice at least 4 days per week). Just my opinion, don't wait to change them. They are cheap ($12) and you can always put your old ones back in.
@@bflo5210 You've already changed the wheels and bearings? Umm...you have already upgraded! :) There are - sadly - many out there who don't even know certain parts can be changed. Those "entry level" skates can last a lifetime with various added parts, and regular maintenance, based on how & where you skate. That said...you can NEVER have too many pairs of skates! LOL If you want others...by all means, go for it! However, if you really like the boots (the fit, style, color, etc.), there really isn't a true reason to get another pair.
Yes! Yeah, right, I'm gonna practice a ton. And thank you for the tip of pointing up the big toe while opening the hip, that helps.. May I suggest spread eagle next? 😁 I can't do it, every time I turn, I become stiff, my left leg turns left, my leading leg keep moving straight, my legs, they just won't cooporate 🤔 ok maybe it's not my legs 🙂 Can you help? Thank you dear Debbie 💕
You mention doing T stops indoors with outdoor wheels will not be great. Probably a stupid question but- T stops outdoors with outdoor wheels, would the pavement grind the wheels down? Is it an ok stop outdoors or are there better stops?
So hard to wear out outdoors wheels in any manner. The compound is made to take it. You can use your toe stops if you like outdoors. They will wear out but they are made to.
Depends on how much speed we are talking about. Skaters can plow stop at speed, t-stop, turn around and use toe stops etc. I will do a video demonstrating high speed stopping!
Dirty School of Skate PLEASE! I’m just dying to hear your description on the mechanics cause I can do the stops but they needs practice at speed. I means they needs practice in general. I couldn’t do a plow stop outdoors to save my life! Like it would literally end my life, face first into the ce-ment.
@@royalhustleind3824 WHOOHOO!!! LOL I always just say my youngest was 2, but in reality, she was 17 months. She was born in Sept. of '04, we started going back to the rink as a family in Feb. of '06. Thankfully she was already pretty steady of her feet so...I figured...why not strap some wheels on her feet? LOL I was around the same age as her when I started - only taking time off to have kids - so, for better or worse, both of us are HORRIBLE with balancing on land (I can...and have...tripped over painted lines in parking lots), but we can both skate pretty well. Go figure. :)
Hey loving these videos and how you manage to explain the techniques in a way that is very easy to understand and put into practice! I have a few questions: How to stop using only the brakes? Does size matter? My gf, who is a newbie to skating has a bigger brake pad and it sometimes hinders her ability to skate freely And could you explain to us how to skip over obstacles like cracks and small imperfections one might find when skating? Also what kind of wheels should we use when skating outside in the asphalt or cement floors? Is it worth having softer wheels? (Currently running 58MM x 32MM 83A) Thanks and Keep 'em coming!!!
Hello! Ok a lot going on here so … one thing at a time. Brakes? Are you referring to toe stops or the brake at the back of an inline skate? When you write about skating over imperfections, I have techniques for that! Video covering it very soon. Outdoor wheels are well worth it if speed is not a concern. Outdoor wheels are softer and will allow you to roll over all sorts of debris without coming to a halt like hard wheels do. 83A wheels should do just fine. I am filming a Skate Anatomy video very soon and I will cover this in detail too :)
@@Dirtydeborahharry Heya! Haha sorry about all that info at once Yes when I say brakes, I mean toe stops! Thanks for commenting about the wheels. Looking forward to your next videos!
@@taqueopariu No need to apologize. I love all the questions! OK … toe stops... more important that the toe stops are set at a height that they are easily accessible to stop rather than the size of the toe stop. Although in the case of your GF having problems skating with her toe stops (meaning they hit the ground when she is cornering etc. ) have her adjust them closer to the plate. Also check to make sure the toe stop is not too big for her wheel height. She may have to go to a small size toe stop if when she turns, her wheel is touch the side of the toe stop. Let me know if this makes sense.
As far as the toe stops go...... If it's an adjustable stop, I highly recommend the Sure-Grip Mini's. (Available online, at your local rink, and even on Amazon - in several different colors to mix and match with your skates.) They're small enough that they don't get in the way, but still big enough that you know they're there. If it's a fixed toe stop, the Sure-Grip 96 All-Purpose toe stop (also available online and at rinks and comes in several colors) would be the best option. Again, small enough not to get in the way, but big enough you know it's there.
I want to know how to hydroslide. Stopping by using one side of both skates to stop. Both skates are out in front of you....we call in hydrosliding in GA, not sure what it's called everywhere else. Essentially what you did at the intro and exit of the video but with both feet.
@@Dirtydeborahharry yes ma'am. Both skates are out in front and both turned the same direction. Someone once said it was akin to a hockey slide...? But I know nothing about hockey so not sure

I know to keep it low, and I keep telling myself to do that, but I still feel wobbly like a baby horse learning to walk.
Please come on out to the rink! You can also contact me direct for lessons. Regarding keeping your balance … balance is a skill that needs to be practiced daily! You can do loads of off skates exercises for that purpose. When you are actually on skates, make sure that your weight is distributed a bit over the ball of your foot and keep your knees bent. Shift your weight from side to side by leaning over the skate. I will try to work this into the next couple of videos so that you can see it in action.

Thank you :)
Thank you. I got skates yesterday and I think this will be the best tips for me 😁💙
Thank u, you’re helping me so much! Answering all my skating questions.
Relearning how to skate and these videos are incredibly helpful! Thank you!
Glad you like them!
I think your videos will really make learning how to skate much easier for me. I like your teaching style and they make me feel comfortable and not nervous at all. I'll fianlly be able to skate like I've always wanted too! Thank you!!
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank you so much!! i had no idea why i couldn’t do t-stops well in my chayas - turns out it’s because i was practicing on a cement floor in 62mm wheels. but your tips helped so much! thanks!
I T-stopped for the first time today. Thank you!
Great video, crossovers and how to turn would be great
I have a video out on transitions but if you are looking for turning as in cornering … making that one tonight!
Those wheels look super fun. Lots of room to make errors and still able to slide through it and looks super fluid.
Truth.
Thank you Debbie! You’re the best!❤️🙌💪
This has helped me a lot! I've already saved this video in my skating Playlist, thank you!
Great video. I can t-stop but I can use that big toe going "boing" thingy as a cue
love the T stop....so smooth and easy
I just got a pair of skates I’m so excited I keep watching all of your videos.i can wait to come and visit there.im in Long Beach.i have a few questions about my skate also
I'm gonna be skating sonic car hop but I taught myself to skate and it's been a long time so this is gonna help so much❤
Nice! Can you do one on alternate ways of doing laterals for people who can't get our hips to open?
YES because in reality you do not have to FULLY open up your hip. It is on my list :)
Omg you are awesome at breaking it down. Thanks a lot. I'm so much better now when I stop. My issue was my knees lol. I didn't know it until I watched your video.
Excellent! Happy to hear!
Awesome video! Like everyone has said, you're really great at teaching body weight distribution. My skates came last night. But I gotta go to work...AUGHHHHH!!!!
Just bring those skates to work! I am sure everyone will be amused :)
I'd love to see a video on the different types of skates and what they're good for please x
Ok … my idea is to just pull out the 4 or 5 pairs of skates I have and tell you what/how I use them. I think that will help.
@@Dirtydeborahharry Thank you! That would be perfect. I got my skates today and I did 15 minutes without falling over or killing myself, so that was good! I'm 46 and last roller skated when I was about 10.

Glad you like them!
keep up the videos !! you've built my confidence and taught me so much !

Thanks Debra. Going to practice that right now
THE GODDESS OF ROLLER SKATING HAS SPOKEN!
hahahhahaha! :)
I found it! 💕🤙
Thank you for the video ! HA the best part was the very end... cracked me up. You should do a video of bloopers.
I should! I have lots of bloopers!
Omd Dirty Deborah Harry. I love it. Your tutorials are amazing I love watching them. You explanation of body weight placement is so helpful. I have been able to help several of Derby mates understand how to plow stop and I am so excited for them to see this video on T-stops.
What are you tips on gliding?
Thank you,
Lil-Debby smax
So glad you are finding these videos helpful :) Regarding gliding … are you speaking about when you skate forward and you are skating on one foot?
From left to right/ side to side.
Skating strokes, maybe? Just pretending I know what I’m talking about over here.

Thank you so much. Really going to try to start making them more frequently. Thanks for watching :)
hey i just wanna say thanks for making this video, before i watched it at the roller rink my school had a thing at i was super unconfident riding my skates, but by the end of the night i was gliding around like a giddy eagle and now i really want to buy a pair of my own, so thanks for giving me that nudge
Thank you! I hate those stoppers in the front, they are always in my way of actually gaining speed haha. I'm about to take them off, can't wait!
Stopping is still my weakest ability as far as skating is going so far. I need to practice more. Thanks for the video! I seriously love hearing you explain how to shift your body weight.
Happy to be of service!
Thanks for the videos I can't wait to start back skating

Great teaching
Yeah! So it was broke in 3 places and I had to have surgery ...well you know the story I now have a bionic ankle with steel in it but I want able to skate...I was heartbroken but to beat the fear of it happening again I got back on skates lol....I'm 39 now and I still skate but had to quit derby right after I only got to play for about a month! I'm hoping I can go back at some point! The skates are always calling me lol.. Thanks for the videos even if your advanced you can always learn something new! Thanks!❤
Wow! This is an amazing story! You are an inspiration. I do hope you get to get back on your skates!!!
@@Dirtydeborahharry I never thought of it like that that it was an inspiration thank you I appreciate that and yes I just have to get back into a little bit of shape before I can roll again LOL when I get confident I'll go back! That intro 😍 ... that outro 😂🤣 when was the last time you fell? How was it? And was it bad? What about the worst/most painful?
I have a video of the last time I feel at the skatepark which is so good! I will post it on my IG @dirtydeborahharry . I get a real good fall in about every 2 months. I skate a lot though so when I do fall, I swear I have to laugh because I am so surprised. My body is pretty tough (and cushy) so not a lot of pain.
Such a thorough explanation!!!! you're a great teacher! thank you so much

thank you so much for taking my suggestion! i just recently started skating and your channel has helped me improve so much! 💖
So amazing! Finally I understood how to do that jajaja xD when I tried by the first time I falled because my wheels were to carved
Hi Debra, I absolutely love your videos, they rock!
I am in Ireland and try to take up roller skating as it is something I always wanted to do since I was a child :)
Is there any chance you could make a video on main beginners mistakes and how to avoid a fall if we find ourselves in that specific moment where you more than likely know you are going to fall LOL?
Thanks a mill

Thank you for your kind words! Just took my Ancestry DNA test turns out I am like 75% Irish so who knows … we could be related if you are Irish too :) So since we are cousins … then for sure I will make a video on this very topic! I teach this in my classes.

Yeah :) Practice everywhere you can! I will do a video on using the toe stop for sure and x-overs is on the list!
Lol! I practice in my kitchen too!! The kids and I go out in the morning, then at night I show my husband (he skates very well) my progress in the kitchen while cleaning up. Tons of fun.

And funny thing my husband is also the better skater lol (he played hockey most of his life).
@@yesibel77 it makes doing the dishes tolerable! My husband did hockey too, from 6 till 16. He literally skates beautiful circles around me. He also did aggressive skating, a bit. It's so utterly sexy to watch him. I'm sure you know what I mean.

Never get tired of your videos. Are you still on a roller derby team?
No. I played for 8 seasons. I really loved banked track.

I have watched so many videos from different people -- you and Indy Jamma Jones are the only ones I’ve been able to learn from 😁
@@lanawynters6258 Excellent!!!!
I really wanna' learn how to do a Reverse Toe Stop!
Can you do a video on wheel types and what is best for indoor/outdoor? Also do you have a code for deals when ordering Sure-Grip skates?
DD, how much pressure to put on the back foot? And on which edge? What's the weight distribution once you're in t position?
When I do the t-stop the wheels make loud squeaky noise and I'm not stopping fast enough. I'm afraid to press too much thinking I'll flip forward. 🤔
Thank you!
Just f joined your club, keep up the good work.
@@bflo5210 I am going to make a video regarding cushions and the benefits of changing them on a regular timetable. Stay tuned.
I can help and I will :) stay tuned.
Hi Debra! Thanks for all your videos. I love you. On the “t stop” in which wheels do you put the pressure?
Outside wheels, all 4 wheels or top 2 wheels just NOT the 2 inside wheels (like in roller blading.)
What is a good way to stop if you have speed going?
Depends on how much speed we are talking about. Skaters can plow stop at speed, t-stop, turn around and use toe stops etc. I will do a video demonstrating high speed stopping!
Dirty School of Skate PLEASE! I’m just dying to hear your description on the mechanics cause I can do the stops but they needs practice at speed. I means they needs practice in general. I couldn’t do a plow stop outdoors to save my life! Like it would literally end my life, face first into the ce-ment.
I haven't skated in over 15 years. . . I'm so ready to relearn once this baby drops

I have a few questions:
How to stop using only the brakes? Does size matter? My gf, who is a newbie to skating has a bigger brake pad and it sometimes hinders her ability to skate freely
And could you explain to us how to skip over obstacles like cracks and small imperfections one might find when skating?
Also what kind of wheels should we use when skating outside in the asphalt or cement floors? Is it worth having softer wheels? (Currently running 58MM x 32MM 83A)
Thanks and Keep 'em coming!!!
Haha sorry about all that info at once
Yes when I say brakes, I mean toe stops!
Again, small enough not to get in the way, but big enough you know it's there.
how much pressure to you place on the inside of your T-skate foot?
Just enough to let it slide.
woooo! Another video
Thank you! Just shot another one last night. Stay tuned.
I love when you say "Snack Area".
I want to know how to hydroslide. Stopping by using one side of both skates to stop. Both skates are out in front of you....we call in hydrosliding in GA, not sure what it's called everywhere else. Essentially what you did at the intro and exit of the video but with both feet.

Hey,I just have trouble, trying to balance and actually trying to t stop, I can't get my food around like you do? what am I doing wrong?
What is the best way to stop in the rink skating with other people?
Thank you for these videos Dirt Deb! I'm a new skater (I'm trying to come out to a monday adult learn to skate at the FVSC) but do you have any tips for helping to keep my balance? I know to keep it low, and I keep telling myself to do that, but I still feel wobbly like a baby horse learning to walk.
Please come on out to the rink! You can also contact me direct for lessons. Regarding keeping your balance … balance is a skill that needs to be practiced daily! You can do loads of off skates exercises for that purpose. When you are actually on skates, make sure that your weight is distributed a bit over the ball of your foot and keep your knees bent. Shift your weight from side to side by leaning over the skate. I will try to work this into the next couple of videos so that you can see it in action.
Is this a stop that I can do outside or is it only for the rink?
