I appreciate you mentioning the difference for outside and inside t stops, ive been trying to put both down.... and not faring well. Gonna give the front only and toestop t a go
It’s extra hard because it’s done at speed so the turn is almost a little jump. It will come as you get more experienced. I should do a separate video on this skill.
While skating today, and I think my skating time probably adds up 2 around 10hrs, I suddenly remembered the transition stop I always used 2 do as a teen!! (I'm 49 now) and I'm so stoked!! I find it quite easy....go me💪🏻😂
Well done. That’s a good way to stop as it takes the forward momentum into the round. Works a treat. I have another stopping video (without toestops) that details that stop too.
Thanks for the video. I have skated twice and and I mainly used the " fence stop" 😅. But I hurt a finger a little bit so I tried the plough and the T-stop. My dream is to do the transition toe stop. It looks so cool!!
The outer edge tip was so so useful, I wish I watched this before going out to skate today lol, I just came back from practicing and I wondered why I wasn’t stopping correctly but this explains it, thank you!
The start of this video was hilarious! I love the editing and how clear your advice is! I'm just trying to decide on my new skates before I get back into it properly and I'm so excited!
Thiis video was extremely helpful to me because I am a beginner roller skater and will start learning to roller skate this summer here in Canada! I feel that I can learn to stop safely on my roller skates using the first two methods after watching this video! Thanks for uploading!
Thank you so much, im new to scating and i was having SO MUCH difficulty with the plough stop but your explanation was amazing, this video is so useful
I just turned 18 yesterday. I've been skating since I was a child, and... I never considered the idea to use one leg to stop. I always thought it was always both feet. Great video, very informative, can't wait to stop crashing into walls when I want to stop 🤣
The only stop I can do is a transition stop lol, but with one toe stop not two. For some reason, all the "easier" stops are harder for me. Thanks for this video!
Skating works like that sometimes! I’ve had this when other skaters pick a move up really quick and I just can’t get the message to my feet from my brain! 😂
The plow stop is a pretty effective way of stopping. However if you’re going really fast it can turn into more a chop stop where you use the same technique but each foot is lifted in a forwards stepping motion. I’ve just filmed a video on emergency stops where I explain this stop it should be live in a couple of weeks.
Hi Katie, we love your videos and we would like to know how to stop when we are going fast in a crowded place where everyone is skating. Sometimes someone right In front of us falls or stops suddenly, and we don’t know how to stop at high speed….and in a range of one meter. Could you show that in a future video please? Much appreciated!
Great question. These situations can be really scary and sudden. In this scenario I’d go for the emergency stop 🛑 of a 180 and both toe stops down. It does require the ability to transition / turn quickly so needs some practice but works really well. My video this Sunday covers the emergency stop. Also in this situations sometimes trying to avoid by using a sudden movement left of right can also work well. I tend to do a little side step / jump action.
@@Skatie thank you so much! Definitely something we need to practice those toe stops! Sometimes there is no space for swerving aside (or so thinks my 14 y.o. daughter, ha ha! I'm 57 and I always find my way out of big crashes.) Looking forward to your next video. You should come on tour to Norfolk! Have you thought about doing workshops? You are great at presenting. And your camera man skates backwards really well!
Hi Skates! I love your videos. I could watch them for hours. Have you been getting my comments? I've left a ton and haven't really heard back from you, which is unusual. I hope everything is ok with you, and that I haven't annoyed you to the point where you don't wanna reply anymore. I'm just trying to plug along in this sport we call skating and the game we call life. And you seem to be the best teacher. So, that is why I am always in your comments and for all the information, I thank you. If it helps, I have referred a ton of new skaters to your channel because they don't know what to do, or where to turn. So, I send them rolling to you. Thank you, Skates! ❤
@@Skatie Oh goodness. Ok. I'm just glad I didn't make you mad and like "screw that guy" lol. I really enjoy your stuff. You're my favorite teacher on all of UA-cam. I've yet to find anyone with half the talent you have. Thank you, Skates!
The T-stop is a more advanced stop than the plough as you need to be able to balance on one leg while the other drags behind. Applying gentle pressure with the braking foot initially should help with controlling the friction. After a bit of practice you’ll feel the right amount of pressure to apply. Make sure you’ve got your safety gear on if you’re falling. Stay safe and happy rolling x
I love the idea of the transition stop but I can't execute it properly just yet. Same thing with the t stop mine is more of a t tap at the moment. I giggled when you did the helicopter arms 🤣 we all know the feeling.
When I was in high school, there was this thing we had to do in gym class at the end of the year where we had to go and skate around the neighborhood and park. I hated how the teachers just ASSUMED we were all experts, and did this in our spare time or something. I was the kid that was lagging behind, because I didn't want to do this, not knowing how to stop, and generally just not having fun. I nearly lost my life that day, or got my leg run over, and couldn't stop myself and nearly went out to a busy road. I had to deliberately make myself fall backwards on my bum in order to stop. The gym teacher finally caught wind of this, grabbed my arm, and pulled me back to the sidewalk. I was fuming that I was even here. To diffuse the tension, the gym teacher smiled and went, "I just saved your life!" Yeah. Great. Thanks for that. But you wouldn't have to do that, if people didn't assume all of us know how to skate/stop. If only I knew your advice sooner.
This sounds horrific. I’m so sorry your introduction to skating was so terrible. Learning any new skills requires a safe space to learn. Which is not the side of a busy road! Wow. Glad you were ok. 💕💕💕
I get a laugh at the beginning terror, well done! Now that stop you do right after looks like something between a modified hockey (very graceful) and t stop. Rather advanced I assume. Looks so easy though.
I haven’t been skating since we were kids the 70s! Just buying my ‘mid life’ skates now lol. LOVE your channel, my knees wished we had all this info all those days ago 🤣.
@@Skatie my skates came today! It’s like I’ve never had them off, even though it’s been 38 years! Thanks Skatie!! 💚🥰 I’m going to start with your ‘stopping vids’ then move onto the transitions! 🛼💕
They are best used outside when skating on trails forwards etc to control speed. They often invoke heated debate as some consider them trip hazards but they do have their uses too when used safety.
What are your thoughts of using your toe stop to slow down? I do it primarily on trail skates to control speed, or to gradually slow down to transition because it’s comfortable for me but I’ve been really really harshly fingers wagged at for doing it. Bad enough that it makes me feel bad
Stopping using a toe stop is fine. As long as your toe is turned out and not dragged behind with your knee pointing down. It will wear your toe stop down quite quickly outside.
It does a little bit they’re much harder than the toe stops so should wear down slower. It also a good idea to move the wheels around if you start to see uneven wear
