Touhou 19 Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost is out, and I managed to go (mostly) spoiler free with the new selection of characters! Here's my reactions to all of them!

11:03 made me realise how much the context of Orin's theme adds to it. Without listening to the melancholic Lullaby of Deserted Hell first it loses so much of its charm of the sudden shift of mood.
It's like listening to Border of Life without Yuyuko's theme.
Ran's theme isn't Necrofantasy. It's Charming Dominion - Who Done it? Phantasm's stage theme.
I think I’ve listened to the Odyssey mix so much that the titles blend together in my head lol

HARD agree on the "these are the best ZUN remixes" statement you made. Futatsuiwa from Sado, Charming Domination, and Tortoise Dragon are standout favorites of mine, but they are all FIRE 🔥🔥🔥
i hate the fact that "less gremlin, more scrunkly" makes sense
chiyari's scrunklier though, imo
good lird hisami looks amazing. one of zun's best designs ever imo. actually a lot of the designs here are great. people joke about zun's art being bad but he has improved so much over time
Orin having four ears not getting retconned is great to see.
Also, we've got nearly every character from SA returning in the last few years. The only two I haven't saeen come back are Parsee and Kisume.
I'm just super stoked that we got Not Sun Wukong as a 2hu.
Here's hoping she gets some kind of spinoff (game, manga, whatever) where she goes around and gathers up the rest of Tang Sanzang's party.
My very favorite part of this game is the fact we canonically have a sapphic character in 2hu, Hisami motsu is canonically in love with her boss zanmu nippaku, also among my other favorite things about her, she is a solicitor of the current hell, this means she is supposed to drag anyone that she can to hell, however there are no stipulations about her victims staying forever so she just politely asks them to visit for like 5 minutes and in exchange she gives them some of her pay for catching them, you heard it right folks, the only confirmed sapphic touhou character is also perhaps the nicest
I mean, it is her job to bring people to Hell, and she's pretty competent at it
Also she is pretty rich, that job pays well apparently, and she just shares a bit of her savings to entice people into Hell
Of course, she is willing to drag you by force if she has to, not that you have a choice to begin with considering Hisami's ability
Honestly I like the roster. The inclusion of Ran, Orin and Mamizou made me happy! Also It's really nice to see Suika and Nazrin after such a long time as well!
zun kinda mixed up the title for sanaes theme, in the song room it says faith is for the transient people but its playing the primal scene of japan the girl once saw very funky
Seeing as I predicted mamizou on your prevous video and she made it in I am now predicting mima for 20, trust

She's banned for being too strong in 9
(Even tho reimu got stupidly strong right now)
If the playable character pattern holds she'll be in Touhou 20 or 21

suika really feels like and odd one out in this game, that being said i havent seen much of the translated dialogue so idk how she ties into the story

Plus, judging from Reimu's scenario translation; SHE IS VERY WELL AWARE of who's the mastermind is
It's true
With her being a member of Former Hell (technically) she is well aware of who the mastermind and proceeds to hint it to Reimu from the very beginning (it becomes more complicated from there, but the english translation is already out so you can see it for yourself)
no shou.. maybee zun saved her for next fighting game or smth..

cool reactions! what did you think of the songs for the new characters? my personal favorite is chiyari's (drug addict) theme, it was so good i teared up
I like Hisami’s theme a lot and the new instruments, but surprisingly the song that stuck with me the most was the second dialogue theme lol. It’s really groovy
I like Nippaku Zanmu theme a lot honestly! I think the vocals are a cool touch and it sounds overall really cool in my opinion!
I Also like Son Biden's theme for It's traditional feel! It's pretty catchy in my opinion!

Gosh I was so elated by each and every one of them!! Discovering them blind, in-game, was an extra treat.
I mean. I mean!!
Aunn, Nazrin and Seiran were already such a delight, I feel like they make for such cute fan-favorites (and I absolutely adore Aunn which is a nice bonus).
But. But!! Ran playable??? Toby Fox, just how powerful are you?? Also Mamizou!? Bringing the possibility of having tanuki vs kitsune banter?? Wow. And Tsukasa of course, we were all kind of expecting to see more of her, but still, wowie. (My only regret was not seeing more of Misumaru, but heh, maybe in other media)
Suika and Rin were also very nice touches of "this is Hell-related, here, have some callbacks", it's really great.
And then the HELL MAFIA TRIO I squealed when seeing Saki, hoping very strongly the other two would pop too considering that they directly affect the animal spirits on screen, and they did!! Aaaah!!
And finally we have FIVE new characters??? I mean, wow. Ok, regular Touhou games introduce like 7 of them, but I was expecting 3-4 new ones based on Touhou 9, and-- and wow, it just kept on giving!! (Can't help but expecting Zanmu to be the fourth deva but it seems she's half-human so idk what her deal is)
Really, I'm so pleased about this roster.
Zanmu is... very complicated
The gist of it is that she used to be a human monk, but at some point got corrupted when she tried fighting spirits by absorbing them, so she got sent to hell and turned into an oni
Onis liked her for her personality and strength so she eventually became leader of hell
She decided to start anew and relocate Hell and that is why Former Hell is made
In the present, after the whole thing with 18 and 18.5, Gensokyo lost its land ownership due to all the marketing
This would usually only be a natural occurence and mothing to be concerned with
But then the Animal Mafia trio show up
They're all fighting for territory to take over Gensokyo
Zanmu disagreed and decided to manipulate almost everything to work out in her favor apparently (the amount of times you'll see her line "You were dancing at the palm of my hand" or something along those lines is kind of excessive)
Her plan was to make all three of them fight each other until they all tire out, then claim Gensokyo to give to Reimu (because she really liked Reimu cause Reimu reminds her of her old human self... apparently
The rest is a bit more complex but I'm too tired to type more so just see it for yourself
I wanted to comment when I saw this video this morning, but I had to leave for work. Anywho, my goodness I have thoughts related to this game's roster, and am hoping to see a couple minor questions answered once I have access to an English translation, since they'll potentially impact the story I'm writing and revising. I will say I laughed when Ran was revealed because of a scene between her and Reimu I wrote back in early April where Reimu tells Ran she should try solving an incident sometime.
So yeah. No Chinese Zodiac or Journey to the West iteration like I had thought, but we got Son Biten regardless. She's not Son Wukong, but is built up to thinking she is. That tracks with so many of my predictions and how they turn out.
And in a previous video of yours you had wondered if the oni we're getting could the the fourth deva. I didn't want to dig myself into a hole by saying she won't be, but oh hey she's not one of the big four. I guess I get to resume my delightfully bad joke that plays out in one scene for Sumireko. Oh, I'm committing to that now. lol
Really curious to see what Ran's dialog and story are.
I'm so interested stort wise in general. It's really annoying cause the wiki doesn't even have 90 percent of the story translated
The game will probably get translated in a few weeks or months. There seems to be a lot of dialog for each character and they even have some dialog when they loose in each stage in the story mode. I can't wait for this game to get translated honestly! The story and interactions definitely seem interesting!

There are actually a lot of lore drops in this game, such as Ran previously coming from Animal Hell, how Former Hell and New Hell came to be, a slight tease of Marisa's childhood, each of the characters' relationships, and more

This is the first game in a while where the final boss isn’t on the cover.
It almost seems like having a character who looks like an iconic mythological hero front and center was a red herring, so nobody could figure out the real final boss is some crazy monk who’s Wikipedia article is less than 200 words long. In Japanese.
