  • The march of automotive progress over the past 50 years is undeniable. Owning a classic car like our long-term 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray lets you put it all into perspective, especially the mythology surrounding its speed. But how far have we really come? Can an iconic classic American sports car outpace a typical family sedan 50 years its junior - say, a 2015 Toyota Camry?

    I have to wonder what difference modern tires/rims would make on the 'Vette.
    I say rims because I don't know what size/ratio tires the stock rims could accommodate, so I presume the best tires for that vehicle would need probably wider and larger rims to keep the same diameter with a lower profile.
    But I'd bet that alone would really level the playing field.

    • @matrox
      @matrox Рік тому +1

      Plus the vette has an antiquated 4 speed trans with spread out gearing. Stick a modern 6 speed tremec trans in it, with modern tires and it will easily knock 2 sec. off a 1/4 mile E/T.

    • @bbb462cid
      @bbb462cid Рік тому

      @@matrox Tires are absolutely part of the suspension. Modern tires and gas shocks help a C2 a lot. Regarding the gear ratios, you could get close and wide ration boxes on a C2. There were also many different rear end ratios to choose from. You want a 3.08:1? Tick this box. You want a 4.11:1? Tick that box. 3.70:1 was a pretty common choice.

    I realize that the '66 Stingray needs to stay stock, but how much difference would there have been had it been shod with modern street radials instead of the bias-ply ones. I believe that the Vette would have beaten the Camry in every category except braking, but better discs and rotors would solve that as well.

    It’s simply INSANE how much faster cars are today than they were even 20 years ago, let alone 50 years ago.
    I think my Abarth is holy hell fast, compared to most cars I’ve owned in the past. But compared to the factories mass producing 400 to 700 horsepower behemoths, it’s pretty pedestrian. People have gotten speed insane.

    This is crazy; one car is a sports car and the other is a modern passenger car. One is supposed to be rumbling. Yota faster than the Vette? I'd love to see the yota chase down a 283 A/C Cobra! Yes the Vette did not do that very well either, but once in a while it did! The Midyear when new...was just as comfortable as the Toyota at normal driving speeds 40-55. but that's were the same style ends. What next the Vette vs a F-4 Phantom II? Their both from the 60,s! We have to commute, transport and travel efficiently in them. I know which I'd choose for my fifty mile commute in winter rain and it wouldn't be the Corvette.

  • @gremmann

    That was fun, but I'm surprised at the Vette's quarter mile time. I had a bone stock 1973 Gremlin X with factory V-8, 304, that did the quarter mile in 15:02, with a 3-speed manual.
    After putting on a 4bbl and putting in a B-W, T-10, 4 speed, I knocked it down to 14:80.
    Wow, the strides AMC made in just 7 years.

    • @Yankeededandy62
      @Yankeededandy62 7 років тому

      I'd blame the bias ply tires! In 73 they finally changed to radials and it makes a huge difference. Slap on modern tires and you'll be quicker still. The rear axle ratio might also had something to do with it, who knows. I'd put a small block 60s Corvette realistically into the 14 sec range for the quarter mile.

    Cars have come a huge way since this Chevy was made. The trouble is that sure, the C2 is not a world-beater by today's standards. But for starters what engine did it have? The 300 gross hp base engine (about 240 bhp), the 350 gross hp engine (about 280bhp)? L72 at 425 gross hp (about 340 bhp)? The top of the line '66 would hit *60mph in 5.6 seconds and do the 1/4 mile in 13.4 seconds* with those slippery tires...You didn't just get "a Corvette" in 1966 you chose lots of things, the options were nuts. Which transmission is in the car wide or close ratio or heavy duty close ratio that gearing matter a lot, which rear end ratio? 3.08:1 (an ECL allowed this ratio in '66)? 4.56:1 (yup that was available) or which of the others, there were seven or eight (!) to choose from. Which brake option? Discs at all wheels yes, standard. But which option? Which suspension? The F40 optional suspension or what? Why'd you pick a sidepipe car it's a power-robber. The under car exhaust is superior for performance. Headrests were an option in 1966 by the way. I _know_ this guy drives better than this, and fishtailing robs you of seconds per lap, but here the car is, ass out like crazy. Fun yeah and no wonder the lap times were so slow. Don't have to drive it like that; false apexes and four wheel drift at opposite lock were in use in racing by 1966 and people did race them competitively, the big-tank option was still available in '66, that was a race intended option. The deck was stacked against the '66 Sting Ray from the start of this comparison ....why the need to do anything else to hamper it and portray it like this? And BIAS PLIES? Jeez look, we aren't taking the Camry back in time to 1966 why shackle the C2 with needless tech like that. Why aren't we using 1966 gas in the C2 while we are at it? F1 tires in 1966 had less grip than street tires today. I'm not arguing that the '66 must be the winner here. I'm arguing for objective comparisons, and what I see here is very arbitrary. Come on now.

      ah but thing about this sport, the 'vette or formally known "Chevrolet Corvette 1966", is well.. 55 years old "53 here". It almost did better than a Camry for being 53 years old. its not the equipment and work of the time that is the issue, its the years inbetween the automobiles. It's as well a lot larger than the plastic computer Camry, and larger tire circumference although thinner which frankly looks fantastic and very much so stock. I drove a 1953 Corvette, went 80 miles per hour on the salt track near our area in 1957. Just think about all the incredible color choices, work and beautiful care, dashing tires even very attractive looks with the lovely chrome rim, and a 7 choice roster of additions to add all for a fantastic price.
      infact the Camry is more to purchase than the 1966 Chevrolet Corvette was in 1966: $4,084 dollars. while the Camry is around 17,000 although I'd be biased for lying, its 16,900; what a deal!...
      In relation however, the pay during 1966 was around 2.00 an hour for a lower job, 5.00 for a good job, and anywhere at 10.00 for a very high qualified payed job. The Corvette in 1966 felt around $8,000 dollars in its price. felt is important because the translation between price back then and now will confuse a robot on google into being absolute and forward not understanding the differ of price between region of the united states, and kind aperture of a company. Deals were another feature. I know my friend begged enough to get his Packard 1949 for just under what 'felt' like $10,000 when the price was 4,123. now 10,000 was the suffering price to purchase this... comparing that to a shitty robot made computer car of today? at 26-46,000 dollars for that half ass created piece of work... I'd say they had some pretty great prices back then when I was a younger man.

      so in reality, the Corvette won! oh and that would be 2015 - 1966 so 49 year old at the time I apologize. still, if it is 20 years old then 25 years old is hardly a difference to the point.

      Ya, and likely by how it doesnt rev out on the long straight its the lowest 300hp version. Meanwhile lets use the most upgraded V6 with the widest tires car to go against it. Not sure why the brakes were so shyt either, clearly they were not rebuilt right or used a 66 spec pad which is just ludicrous.

    Let's keep in mind that Corvette was equipped with a 350. The 427 models were significantly faster. Plus, 5 or 10 grand in this car could make it much more capable. Add power, suspension, and some bigger wheels and tires.

    Bias ply tyres? Come on. That's unfair. I'm sure it'd have been more respectable if it had modern tyres. Still, that V6 Camry is lighter and has better brakes. I'm surprised the corvette managed a 1:44 with those tyres. It was never meant to be a track car was it?

    • @Yankeededandy62

      The concept of the old Corvettes WAS to drive it on the roads every day and without missing a beat, going out on the tracks on Sunday. I still chase my 69 around like that, mind you. But with modern radials and it's a blast to throw around curves in 2nd gear.

    My daughter was doing a Tire Rack Street Survival course, and one of the other students had a Camry. My daughter and I both agreed that the Camry had the worst handling of any of the cars in the class. Monumental and relentless understeer, all of the time. You can see it in this video too. Sure it's a FWD car, but so were half the cars in the Street Survival class. The Toyota SUV in the class was even scarier with lots of roll and what appeared to be poorly dampened oscillations. With the exception of Toyota's sports cars, I didn't see anything which would commend Toyota's ability to make a good handling car.

    • @vlad1889
      @vlad1889 7 років тому

      "With the exception of a sports car", well if you don't want a sports car why rant about the handling? Regular toyota made to last and eat up bad roads and your suspension will last for decades also.

    I really hate these comparisons where they don't change the tires or wheels of the old cars. Nobody even in the 60's kept stock tires on their car. Performance cars like the corvette were almost always modified in some way.

    • @WitchKing-Of-Angmar
      @WitchKing-Of-Angmar 2 роки тому

      The reason is that this isn't anything like when the Corvette was original. It's now approaching 50 years old in the video, while that hideous computer Camry was brand new or close to. Now a Camry isn't a racer, the Corvette was surely a racer driven all over the place. The top speed of the Corvette was 150, not 85, that is absurd especially for the 1950's and 1960's sport styles. My the massive Mercury Turnpike 1957 went 120 miles per hour and has the easiest turning ever. It proves my point that because there was some racism and sexism in the 1950's-60's people now use anything to make the time of the past look bad. They feel bad for liking older things, ...it's so unhealthy how young kids have ruined the outlook on our past and history and hard work now turned into a joke.
