- Locating Coyotes! Scenario Taken From Coyote Calling Competition Tips! How Calling Competitions Work! Watch this video to see how to have success in coyote calling contests! I take you inside of my world, where I came from in the realm of outdoor coyote calling competitions.
Coyote calling competitions are exactly how I got to where I am today. They helped me to gain knowledge and understanding of the coyote and how to call them more efficiently.
I hope you enjoy this video. Feel free to share this with friends.

I hunt big woods and thickets and I must say this makes a lot of sense. I have done this very thing and didn't realize it. I will park on side of road between a bunch of my properties let out a howl. Then come in from down wind side and call them in. If you get in there bubble you have a much greater chance than from 500 to 1000 yards
Wow! Brother Les you’re my favorite!
I hope you have many, many grandchildren because you are a Great story teller. Thank you.
Thank you Eric! Thank you for watching and commenting! LJ
Les, these youtube videos are great. You can go into predator hunting topics in depth. No 22 minute time limit on your show. I love watching them, keep them coming.
Thank you polishtheturd! I appreciate it and thank you for watching/commenting! LJ
Les, these videos are great. This one peaked my interest though and the suspense was awesome. Real good information and it’s amazing how you have such a natural ability to read these predators. I would love to see how you would hunt a dense wooded area with alfalfa fields around like here in Ohio. Thanks so much for your time and You are an inspiration to me. Best of luck
Great lesson as usual. Reminds of that story about how the turtle always somehow manages to beat the hare. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Matthew! I am glad that you are enjoying the videos! Thanks for watching and commenting! LJ
This was a great lesson but one of my problem I have now after losing 80% of the hearing in my left is judging distance and exact location of coyote howls now! If I’m fast and turn my good ear toward sound in a search pattern to locate the direction but still have trouble with distance!🤦♂️
Great videos Les, I really enjoy them, hope you keep making more!
The R. Lee Ermey of coyote hunting.
Great lesson! Thanks!
Great when you tell those stories of actual successful hunts like that in detail......good stuff
Good info keep that in mind the next time out
great videos les hopefully this next fall I can try it out myself.
This is a hard tactic to implement into your hunting habits ,but this little tip will produce 20 to 30% more coyotes once you change your thinking from human to coyote. thanks les
I enjoy watching all coyote hunting videos. But I must say, my success rate at coyote hunting is far removed from that demonstrated in the videos. I have tried numerous "techniques" described in the videos with very little success. I have two electronic calls (FoxPro and Primos), as well as 2 spinning decoys and a life size coyote decoy and have used all in various combinations but still with little success. However, here in North GA, just over the past 10 days, I have used a pups in distress with a spinning decoy and popped a coyote after about 20 min. of calling. But the one that surprised me the most was yesterday evening. I stepped outside about 30 min. before dark and heard what sounded very similar to my female challenge call off in the distance. My calls were in the carport so I grabbed a rifle and went out "just to see" if I could get a response to my call. I wasn't expecting to actually have a coyote come up that close to my house. I let loose with a coyote challenge from the Primos for about 15 seconds. Within 3 minutes I had a perfect broadside of a coyote at about 50 yds. looking back towards the house in the direction of where the call was. I propped up on the side of the carport and "another one bites the dust". That was my quickest and easiest success story ever when it comes to coyote hunting. That is, if you really want to call that hunting.
What call did you use on first yote rabbit distress or another howl
There's a lot to it - interesting theories!
Hey les , great video with a ton of useful info. If you have coyotes howling do you try vocals or distress only? Thanks.
Cory, it depends on the situation. If the coyotes are a long ways away, I will slip out and try to get closer to them and use distress. Thanks for watching/commenting! LJ
Love the videos, would really like to hear your thoughts on urban coyote hunting. Here in the twin cities we have an exploding coyote population and land permission is incredibly limited and rifle use is also very limited, would love to hear your two cents on how work small urban settings.
Hey les what optic do you use on your set up
Great video Les, We deal with a lot of wind issues here in west Texas. Would it be best to call cross wind or crank up the E-call and try to punch directly into the wind ? Thanks
I like crosswind Steve. When the winds get tough, you've got to give the coyote a reason to want to come in. If they "think" that they can get to your downwind relatively easy, they will come check you out. Thanks for watching and commenting. LJ
hey Les, where do coyotes bed? tree thicket on ridge tops or down in the ravines and saddles?
Hard question to answer. I have seen them bed in drainage tiles before. The dead of winter in Michigan.
Nicole Nielson I walked up on one sleeping in the middle of a patient just below a Ridge out of the wind while muzzleloader hunting with a friend. We thought it was dead got about 30 feet from it and it jumped up and got the heck outta Dodge. So I'd say where ever they are when they get tired!
Nicole, Matthew and polish are exactly correct in what they said. A coyote is going to bed down where they feel safe and that could be anywhere. Typically, I would say they like to bed on the side of a hill so that they can see something coming from below and escape fairly quickly if something comes over the top of the hill and down. Thanks for watching/commenting. LJ
Everything Outdoors with Les Johnson thank you everybody for your insight! I appreciate it a lot.
I had a experience similar to this and we left to the opposite side of the area and started there n killed 4 in a hour
Sounds an awful lot like I scenario I had back in January. Coyotes howling in all directions. Being on public ground and not totally familiar with the area, and not wanting to spook everything, I backed out at dark. This place is loaded with coyotes. How do I scout it better without messing up the area so to speak? If your ever in Iowa and want to hunt let me know. Thanks in advance for any advise.
Todd, no need to scout if you are hearing them. Obviously, they are howling from an area where they feel safe, so just slip into those areas and call them. If coyotes tell me where they are without me calling to them, they just messed up. Thanks for watching/commenting. LJ
Can you please give me a shoutout on your videos I would greatly appreciate it 😃
