Jerry Byrd once said, "There are 2 ways to play the steel guitar; 1. From the brain to the hands and 2. From the brain through the heart and then to the hands". Later Jerry added to this by saying, "There are 3 ways to play music; Melody, melody and melody!" I will say without hesitation that Doug epitomizes the above as few can. Thank you Doug kind Sir for what you have shared with us. May Jesus continue to bless you with talents a "cut-above".
Geez Doug! I wish I had discovered your channel years ago! Such beautiful music. The warm tones and perfect playing of the steel goes right through my soul. Beautiful playing and a beautiful song Doug. I bought your two C6 books a few years ago and am still using them. I've given this song a shot and really like the B11 tuning.
Lucked out and found a new one on sale in Edmonton, Alta. About half the list price so down from over-priced to quite reasonable. Canadian dollar is 75 cents US right now so not a good time to buy guitars from the States. Then I saw your video of bending behind the bar...Ha. Will try that on my late 50s National or early 60s Fender. Not cheap but pretty low cost guitars.
It's a pleasure to listen to you, an absolute pleasure. I just started learning lap steel...a new chapter in my life, you see I've been a professional bassist for the last 38 years and the band is starting to slow down a little and this is something I've been wanting to do for some time now. I've been searching youtube for ideas, lessons, plans for building etc...so far I've been lucky...there's a lot of info out there and I'm glad I found your videos, thanks for posting them! Ps: where do you find all those wonderful old lap steels...the old instruments are so cool.
Thanks, and best of luck in your new venture! Steel guitar is a great instrument. I've been playing for 45 years and I've bought and sold a lot of vintage steels. Many of the ones that I played in my videos have been sold. I usually have about 8 or 10 at any time. Enjoy your lap steel.

Thank you I just purchased a new beginner steel. This is inspiring. I will have to look for some backing tracks. I have a 65 Silvertone Bass Amp with a 15 Inch speaker. I think this will sound good thru it. Thanks again.
That's a gorgeous tune, Doug! I have the same instrument, but mine says "Airline" near the bridge rather than having that square type design. Interesting, because other than that small detail, they are identical
Thanks! I'm glad you like it. Valco Co. in Chicago built lap steels for any company that would place a certain minimum order. Airline was the "store brand" they made for Mongomery Ward department stores. They made Silvertone guitars and amps for Sears stores. This Valco lap steel is exactly like an Airline, but as you said, it has no logo. It's possible that they made a few no-name ones to sell to teaching studios that were not dealers. In any event, I call mine an Airline because it's easier than explaining to people that it was built in the same factory and to the same specs as Airline. Thanks again! 😎
