  • Thank you to our patron Robert K for this FANTASTIC pick... we haven't done any Beach Boys since doing Side one of Pet Sounds... and no one watched it! So, I never went back really since no one requests them... but I enjoyed it a lot! But Bryan Wilson put on a hell of a show here and it's just chill inducing by the end. Fantastic Work.

You have to listen to the whole record. This was the first concept record. It was intended to be listened to as one entire piece. It is a trip, a voyage, an adventure!😮

you are right about everything except that it's the first concept record...it isn't
The two Frank's beat him to it...also
Phil Spector (A Christmas Gift for You 1963).
      and the two Frank's are...
Frank Zappa (Freak Out 1966) and
Frank Sinatra (In The Wee Small Hours 1955)
All concept albums... all BEFORE Smile in 1967

It was not the first concept record. And it never came out. Even this version that he did in 2004 isn't what the album would have been in the 60's.

and of course it's not even the Beach Boys' first concept album. That would be "Pet Sounds" in 1966, same year as Zappa's "Freak Out." Also, Woody Guthrie's "Dust Bowl Ballads" came out in 1940.

This group was like the best Beach Boys cover band in the world and then they got Brian to be their lead singer when he surprised everyone by not just surviving but getting his act largely together as far as his mental health. The Beach Boys' version of SMILE was heavily bootlegged but never officially released (Then. It has been now, in a box set). It was intended as a concept album about the history of America. Brian ended up rerecording it from scratch in the early 2000s. Best song from it was the melancholy "Surf's Up" which, despite its title is not about surfing. It also has the most obscure and coolest lyrics EVER!

There’s a 2004 documentary available here on UA-cam- Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the story of Smile. If you can make time in your busy day, it is worth every minute. Stories and details from friends who were there for the creation in the 60’s including Van Dyke Parks, who co-wrote the lyrics you just heard. The premiere in London 2004 is just great and gets a 10 minute ovation.

Smile was an unfinished album after Pet Sounds. Only a few tracks ever saw the light of day. It's believed that only Brian could see the whole project in his head and the other Beach Boys didn't really know where he was going. Brian's perfectionism caused a rift to develop within the band.

Yes, definitely take a deeper dive into the Beach Boys. It may just have been that people didn't want to sit through a half-album review. Just go with some cool, single tracks. There are dozens of them to choose from. 👍
You could start with a great early one like "Surfin' USA" or "California Girls."

I agree with a deeper dive. Lee, do a little bit of research on Brian. Jealous, abusive father, extremely fragile emotional state, his Mozart-level genius. I cannot recall the name of his diagnosis, but he hears voices that tell him derogatory and hurtful things.
An American Legend is an understatement.

To clarify, LEE, @g.e.5723 when says "Jealous, abusive father" he is referring to The Wilson Brothers' FATHER. He treated them badly, especially Brian, and their father managed them for a time.

What you heard was actually 3 tracks, the opening was the wordless Our Prayer, followed by a small bit of the Crow's 1953 single Gee (the Dit Dit Dit part) followed by the original Cantina version of Heroes and Villians. The Beach Boys 1967 single version did not use this section but it was later released on the Beach Boys SmiLe Sessions box in 2011.

The Beach Boys’ Smile album has been called the “most legendary unreleased album” in the history of rock. Had it been released, Smile would have likely rivaled the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as a cornerstone recording not only of that year but of the rock era. While some music intended for the album was produced, few finished songs resulted from the sessions begun in early 1966. The recording was never fully mapped out or definitively sequenced and in May of 1967, for various well-documented mental health, legal, and corporate reasons, Brian Wilson gave up on Smile.
With the demise of the Smile project after a year of misfires, the Beach Boys and Capitol Records had to move quickly. Pet Sounds, although it had reached #10 in the US Billboard chart, did not sell as well as previous Beach Boys albums. So, in record time, they recorded their next album, "Smiley Smile". However, before anyone had even heard a note, Smiley Smile’s reputation suffered by comparison to the envisioned landmark reputation of Smile. Although a few critics praised it, Smiley Smile, released on September 18, 1967 (16 months after Pet Sounds) was largely considered a failure and stalled at number 41 on the charts.
Note that it does contain their chart-topping single “Good Vibrations” (which had been released after Pet Sounds), as well as the followup single; a more "stripped down" (but still quite ambitious) version of “Heroes and Villains”. At the time, fans were unaware of the existence of the original, longer, and more eccentric versions of "Heroes and Villains" and "Good Vibrations", which were both intended for inclusion on Smile. I would highly recommend hearing these songs as they were released on Smiley Smile. These are the versions that people grew up with. Of course, the longer versions have been officially available since 2011 on the album "The Smile Sessions", which includes an attempted reconstruction of "Smile" using every known piece of tape recorded during 1966 through 1967. The blueprint used to reconstruct "Smile" for "The Smile Sessions" album basically came from 2004, when a reenergized Brian Wilson returned to the concept and released a newly recorded version of the album that he called "Brian Wilson Presents Smile". This is an album worth listening too.
Smiley Smile was quickly assembled nearly from scratch, and only a couple of pieces of Smile were utilized, although some of its songs (“Vegetables,” “Wonderful” and “Wind Chimes”) were reworked from the ground up. In the end, the minimalist, often experimental Smiley Smile tracks, cut at Brian’s new home studio over a six-week period in the spring of 1967, had next to nothing to do with the abandoned album other than a similar title. Eschewing the studio musicians used on their previous recordings, the Beach Boys themselves played most of the instruments (including organ, melodica, percussion, bass, piano and found objects) on these new sessions. The entire group, rather than just Brian, was credited with the production.
For some longtime fans, Smiley Smile is just too far out there, and just plain weird. In fact, some of this album sounded more like Frank Zappa than the Beach Boys. But over the years, attitudes have softened. The Beach Boys’ Bruce Johnston (who did not participate in much of the album’s creation) has been quoted as saying that some drug treatment centers even found that the album’s more relaxing, wispy tunes helped calm down those on bad LSD trips! Indeed, several of the tunes, now considered precursors of a subgenre known as lo-fi, served as something of an antidote to the blaring, guitar-heavy rock that was emerging at the time. To some "Smiley Smile" will always be an also-ran, a substitute for something that would have shadowed it, but to others it is a masterpiece in its own right.

If you want to know where the Beach Boys' typical harmonies came from, see the 5 min. video "The Four Freshmen on the BBC July 2012", where Brian Wilson and Al Jardine talk about copying the harmonies of The Four Freshmen from records note for note. (Wilsons father/manager was a fan). In one segment, the video segues between the 2012 Freshmen lineup and the Beach Boys both singing "Surfer Girl".

As an example of how influential the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson's music was (and is), in 1977 a music teacher in Langley, British Columbia, Canada (about 1 hour east of Vancouver) formed a choir of kids aged 10-14 from the Langley School District. At the time, Langley was known as a center of Canada's bible belt but nonetheless this choir's renditions of music from the Beach Boys, David Bowie, Linda Rondstadt and more proved very popular in the community.
One recording of this choir was made as a memento for the kids and their families. It was re-discovered in a secondhand store in Victoria, BC in the 2000s and so we can enjoy it now.

@@mickell241 It's crazy because Murry wanted to be a big success in his field of passion: songwriting. But he failed to achieve his dreams and sunk into the sort of mental health issues Brian faced albeit not as severe (depression, alcoholism). Having been physically abused by his father Buddy, who also had gone from dealing with his own failed dreams to taking it out on his loved ones as a violent drunk that frequently terrorized his wife and kids (yet lived to be 91 and outlived a few of his own children, which must mean he curbed his old ways at some point). Murry raised his sons the only way he knew how (physical and verbal abuse). When they became a success and Brian was the sort of genius he thought he could be, his already fragile psyche saw him turn to jealousy for sure. Ultimately it got him fired as the band's manager, divorced from his wife and by 1973, dead of a heart attack (Murry's propensity to gorge on food, booze and smoking his pipe contributing to it. Sound familiar?). Luckily none of the Wilson boys turned out quite the way Murry and Buddy did but you saw all three struggle at times with substance abuse and Dennis died from his demons while Brian nearly did.

Please listen to The Warmth of the Sun. Written by Brian Wilson. Best version by Vince Gill sung to Brian at one of the tributes to him (2001). David Crosby tells the back story of how and why this song was written during the intro to it. It will break your heart. They explained that he wrote the song hours after the assassination of RFK.

While their peak was in the 1960s, I haven't delved much (yet) into the pre-Pet Sounds albums, just their greatest hits from that time period. The albums 'Sunflower' and 'Holland' are IMO the best albums of the 1970s Beach Boys and could be enjoyed in their entirety, and showcase a variety of the band members' lead vocals and styles. If you just want to dip your toes in Sunflower, do the first three tracks "Slip On Through" "This Whole World" and "Add Some Music to Your Day" and you will be very happy (and only 8 minutes total of your listening time).
Many revere 'Surf's Up' (Sunflower's successor) but it is too uneven for me and has some duds; I'd do individual songs on it: "Long Promised Road" and "Till I Die" are phenomenal and don't get a fraction of the attention they deserve.

The Beachboys hated to play this song due to its complexities and that led to Brian leaving the band. "Smile" was a very trippy psychedelic album and unreleased for decades, but it released two singles (this one and "Good Vibrations"). You should check out the animated studio version of "Heroes and Villains" by The Beach Boys.

Brian can't hit those ultra-high notes anymore, like most singers when they reach his age. He's still an American Hero and our adopted son. God Bless you Brian. He is suffering from dementia these days, as are many of us his age, as are our parents and grandparents. It's incredibly sad. We'll always have his music and The Beach Boys.

If you dive any deeper into this particular venue, you should go for The Smile Sessions rather than Brian Wilson presents Smile. It's much better with The Beach Boys voices and it has a weird vibe that went lost with the solo release. 1967 is more psychedelic while 2004 sounds a bit more like a Disney movie. It is technically unfinished but it's just as listenable as a proper record.

You should definitely check out all of the SMiLE Sessions, NOT SMILEY SMILE (though it is a good album). SMiLE Sessions, even in its unfinished state, is so quirky and weird, catchy and fun, experimental and trippy. Just a good time, and one of my favorite albums of all time.
It might not get as many views as say The Beatles, but there is an audience for it! Also, it’s just amazing music that I believe everyone should try out at some point in their life.
Cheers, I dug the reaction 👍

Ps: just wanted to say how AMAZING this band was that backed Brian during these sessions and live events. It is such a labor of love, and you can tell how much fun all of them were having helping Brian bring his vision to life. I will never tire of watching that concert

I love this song. This song did come out. "God Only Knows." "Warmth of the Sun." " Good Vibrations." Sail On, Sailor." "Don't Worry, Baby."
Why did you pick this weird version? Yikes!
