I mean... a LOT of those early round draft picks that usually guarantee high AV and should have undeniable physical talents to be traded later if you can't develop them properly went into QBs - the very position where players need the most technical development and are dependent on surrounding cast and general offense, if they don't make it in the first year of play, they are labelled busts and super hard to trade on - that rarely happens to defensive or offensive line 'slot' players whose physical talent can shine even under bad coaching and who can often be traded even if they don't perform too well initially
I felt so bad Chris Carson had to hang them up. That dude was a tough nose no bullshit runner and I respected him heavily for that. He earned those yards.
The Seahawks just suck at drafting in the 1st round for some reason. Collier, Penny, Ifedi, Irvin and Carpenter were all busts. But they draft better than any other team in the mid rounds. They should just trade their 1sts for more picks in rounds 3-5. lol

Looking back on this and seeing Darnold makes me realize how easy it is to label someone a bust, when it’s another thing to realize situation matters as much if not more. Makes you wonder how all the jets qb’s would be if they didn’t start our their career with them?
Drafting is one thing, but coaching and organization are hugely important factors in a players' success. A strong organization can help a talented player reach his potential. Take a guy like Travis Kelce, for example, who had maturity question marks coming out of college. Put him on NY Jets with a defensive minded head coach and close to Manhattan and I think his career goes very differently. I use Andy Reid as a prime example of a coach being able to handle guys with off the field questions. Pete Carroll is very similar in that regard. Mike Tomlin also comes to mind. I think that's why these teams tend to "draft well".
Came here to say something similar but you said it so much better than what I was thinking. Yes, talent development matters and the Jets chew up and ruin promising talent.
Great take on Kelse! Also, Andy Reid for that matter. It goes way deeper than drafting. As a Bills fan, I see the benefits of a good draft and great culture. I see the same ( less than positive) factors influencing the Jets, negatively.
As a NYG we have been so bad. Like worthless bad drafting. In the basement with jets and browns bad. I’m so glad we seem to be turning around. Excited to look back on this in a years time.
As a Giants fan since the days of YA Title I can tell you time will not make it better. Every 20 or 30 years they get a good GM but in between Giant GM's Suck
Fun fact (about good draft picks): During the 3rd Round of the 2012 NFL Draft, Philadelphia’s GM Howie Roseman wanted to trade up and select Russell Wilson, but his power was far from absolute, and he couldn’t get it done. Afterwards Roseman said, that if another QB with Wilson’s upside was still within reach on Day 2, he would take him even if it didn’t make sense on paper. Enter Jalen Hurts.
I think it worked out for Philly. Foles was taken in the same draft as Russ, and though he was far from the player Wilson was, he helped them win a SB and they ended up being in a position to build their team the way they did.
What are you all rambling about? Hurts was proven to be a fraud and the Eagles pretenders. Now kneel before the mighty NinerEmpire and the chosen one as we take our rightful place as Superbowl world champions.48-21 49ers.
@@mrsinister8943Shut up you don’t know what your talking about you guys can’t even win against the Chiefs after playing them in the big game twice. I would take Hurts any day over Purdy.
"JEts fans might get a taste of what a franchise quarterback looks like" Ouch, that lasted a matter of minutes. I easily expected the Browns to be the worst, but it's not surprising that the team with the longest playoff drought in american pro sports is the worst. You don't fail that long with good drafting.
Seeing the stat for the seahawks makes me a lot more comfortable for the upcoming draft, especially after I had a nightmare that we traded the number 5 pick for Nihiem Hynes for some reason. I thought it was real for about 5 minutes.
Looking at this a year later, it becomes evident that the Jets didn't whiff at the 2018 QB selection, they whiffed at his development. Just like the Browns with Baker. In hindsight, that even makes me wonder whether the likes of Johnny Manziel could have made it in the league under a coach who knows what they are doing and keep him on the straight and narrow.
The media and internet armchair mob thought that he should have been picked in round 1 and were praising the Jets for getting him in Round 3. The internet armchair mob would be even worse that the Jets as a front office.
Well, there's a reason there's a supercut video featuring all notable whiffs from the team who performed the worst. Being a Jets fan is a troublesome endeavour and I'm not quite sure why I chose them but I do believe it's been a team problem for a while. We've been needing a great staff to turn things around for ages.
This is what happens when you have bad management running a team an a owner who just does whatever he wants to do. Until you change the head of the fish the body will always stink by proximity. But as a Jets fan I'm hoping JD, Saleh and this latest batch of draft classes change our culture for the better.
The just end the seasons fans deserve an owner who is in the football business, they have had an oil man change the jerseys to match his gas stations and band aid boi woody johnson cares more about the vaccine and Bactine business than he does draft picks and superbowls. The green team from NY is a very expensive toy train set nothing more.
Yup. Same thing with EVERY perpetual bad team. Lions and Browns for sure. Damn egotistical management who knows jack and shit about choosing players is in charge and will be until they die. Thus, you get perineal bad teams.
@11:13 (or so)... "...if Aaron Rodgers happens to be treaded to New York, , then Jets fans MIGHT get a little taste of what a franchise quarterback looks like..." A very, very little taste (4 plays?). Dang.
As a Giants fan, our 2012 draft was pretty awful. We didn't have a single guy last past their rookie deal. To be fair, David Wilson could have been something special if he didn't injure his neck, and Reuben Randle was acceptable at WR. Still, not the value you expect.
It goes to show you how important the organization is. And it goes beyond drafting the right players, but developing that talent. Consider that the Jets drafted Geno Smith early in the second round of the 2013 draft. Seattle picks him up after the Jets failed with him. Last year Seattle traded Russell for a boatload of picks and Smith goes on to take the Hawks to the playoffs.
It also makes me wonder wtf is going on with the Cowboys. They consistently hit on draft picks and have talented rosters but yet haven’t had any real success for nearly 30 years. This tells me that the issue stems from Jerry Jones and his culture.
I think the biggest problem for Dallas is Jones, but its not culture based. Its because he hires terrible coaches. Garret, McCarthy, these guys aren't in the top 1000 people I would want coaching my NFL team. Than they luck into a pretty good OC in Moore and they blame him lol. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but Dallas is going to be worse this year than last year and it has nothing to do with the talent on the field, they have a really talented team. It has to do with lack of talent on the sidelines.
@skillethead15 you can have a big ego as long as you're razor focused, can read people, or know how to get out of your own way. Jerry just has a big ego.
Seeing how Rodgers has got so much worse after joining and Darnold has got so much better after leaving, I think it’s clear that their recruitment is not their main issue

How the Jets supposed to pick Russell Wilson with the 77th pick after Seattle takes him with the 75th? There's absolutely no shortage of ways to LEGITIMATELY slag off the Jets. Stick to those.
As a Bengals fan, may I suggest my team to fill that role, instead? Up until the Burrow era, we had the misfortune of drafting a player one pick before a star/potential HoFer. Only people who come close to that in the past 25 seasons (before the Burrow era) for us were AJ Green, Andrew Whitworth, and Chad Johnson.

Seahawks have been drafted well and gotten a ton of value which is a huge credit to Pete and John Schneider. But whats crazy is Pete has never won coach of the year, and Schneider has never won executive of the year, even though they have deserved it many times.
From a Jets fan we should have gone 0-16 that year no not because I wanted TLaw but because we were so fucking trash that year we didn't deserve to win a single game but some fucking how pulled 2 wins out of our ass
Another factor: not that the team drafted a poor prospect, but that the rookie was poorly developed or mismanaged in their time with that team; said another way, some GMs may draft fairly well, but the coaches/program/team mishandles those draftees more often.
Head coach and QB matter. If you get those two right chances are you’ll be headed in the right direction. Doesn’t mean you’ll win a SB but fun to watch.
With how many teams there are that are simply incapable of helping draftees become good NFL players, I genuinely wonder why more players don't just straight-up refuse to play for shitty organizations, like Eli Manning did with the Chargers or John Elway with the Colts.

My Bears have had mixed results of drafting in the 1st round in the last 2 decades. Since 2000, the Bears have drafted Pro Bowlers half the time and some duds the other half of the time. So the Bears drafting can be a hit and miss.
Example of a success: Brian Urlacher in 2000 (okay that’s a tad over 20 years ago but you get the point) Example of a bust of a pick: Kevin White from 2015
I don’t think the bears were good at drafting. They just got lucky guys like Kyle Fuller made up his value later in his Chicago tenure Late round steals by Ryan Pace grossly inflating this number

Any Packers fan will tell you they are beyond pleased to get Rodgers out of there. He's such a mess of a person. I think that if the Jets can learn how to coach QBs (believe it or not Wilson was really good in college) they stand a real chance. But, yet the fans keep demanding that more talent should be added. I don't get it.
Drafting and player development go hand and hand. If there is no infrastructure in place it is difficult for young players to succeed. Were the players really that bad? Or was it the organization that failed them? This question is not targeted at zach wilson for obvious reasons. AV, in general, is subjective. The preformance of a player is impacted by others. In a bad organization everyone looks worse. Also comparing the number 1 overall pick to the 32nd is not a fair way to attribute draft value. You get a stud left tackle at number 1, obviously the AV will be higher than a starting caliber MLB at 32. The team picking at 32 would have picked that tackle too. It is far easier to just count how many starters teams get from a draft. How many games played, how many probowls, how many all pros.
And how being drafted to a bad team with no help really rattles rookie QBs. Often, by the time they get help, they’ve lost confidence in their own abilities.
You get stars in the first round, you build championship teams in the middle rounds. The Legion of Boom was mostly 4th and 5th rounders. Gronk and Edelman in the 6th/7th round. Kelce and Tyreek Hill in the 3rd & 5th round.
It's not who you draft, but the development of raw talent and timing of trades. The niners now have a more experienced Purdy(last draft piçk overall a couple years ago,now have drafted a receiver. It's time to stock up on o line. Lose Bubba to trade bait.

I think that's why these teams tend to "draft well".
this comment is right on the money
Came here to say something similar but you said it so much better than what I was thinking. Yes, talent development matters and the Jets chew up and ruin promising talent.
Great take on Kelse! Also, Andy Reid for that matter. It goes way deeper than drafting. As a Bills fan, I see the benefits of a good draft and great culture. I see the same ( less than positive) factors influencing the Jets, negatively.

As a Giants fan, our 2012 draft was pretty awful. We didn't have a single guy last past their rookie deal. To be fair, David Wilson could have been something special if he didn't injure his neck, and Reuben Randle was acceptable at WR. Still, not the value you expect.
8:30 Proof coaching failed Darnold. And probably for Zach too but we’ll see
It goes to show you how important the organization is.
Smith also only threw for 250+ yards a handful of time in a throwing league . Definitely not the answer
I just made a comment similar to yours before I saw yours. Props to you.

There's absolutely no shortage of ways to LEGITIMATELY slag off the Jets. Stick to those.
The Raiders may be the most unfortunate drafting team in NFL history.

Another factor: not that the team drafted a poor prospect, but that the rookie was poorly developed or mismanaged in their time with that team; said another way, some GMs may draft fairly well, but the coaches/program/team mishandles those draftees more often.

What QB in the NFL that can say they had a good offensive line and good receivers to throw to pretty much their whole career?
