The small size is perfect for e-reading and mobile games imo! Which is what I mostly got it for, and it'll be easy to carry around compared to either the macbook or an air/pro.
I honestly had 0 idea that Apple straight up disables the phone calling and texting capabilities of the radio modem in iPads. I am completely shocked, shocked since nobody covered it and shocked because all Android tablets do support this feature. Why would they do it? Why cripple your own device? After all the modem is there and this thing basically runs IOS that supports it. WHY?!
Technically you can iMessage anyone in the apple ecosystem, which is texting if your circle of contacts has an iPhone (and many do nowadays.) You can FaceTime as well, for video calling. Like Nebarus says above me, they clearly want people to make multiple purchases, and that business model has made them a 2.4 trillion dollar business.
The iPad Mini is almost like Apple’s iPad hardware design team lambasting the iPhone team. They’ve implemented TouchID so seamlessly into the user experience that it just highlights how bad it is that the iPhones don’t have it. They added USB-c, which is a better experience even for people deep in the Apple ecosystem. They improved on the stylus experience on a screen not much larger than the largest iPhone screen. They added stereo speakers, which is so obviously a good idea for phones. The iPad Mini is proof that Apple could make such a better phone experience than it currently does
The iPad Mini makes sense for reading. I still have a 1st gen version, and it's more comfortable to lie back and hold it that way than it would be for a larger tablet. But, if you're just using it for reading, then there are much more affordable options available.

Hey Riley. the sound buttons are on top because the Apple Pencil 2 can attach to either side and when you do, it takes up the entire side. The fun thing is that the sound buttons work, upper for louder, lower for quieter, no matter how you have your mini oriented! I have heard that many people ARE buying this new mini to use as a cheaper, larger iPhone. I know my old mini will try to accept phone calls when my phone rings. The iPad doesn't have a keypad/phone app but it does have Contacts and perhaps you can call from there (I know the 'call' icon is highlighted) or perhaps Siri could help. Alex Lindsey says he now uses FaceTime audio for all his calls so that would be a way to do it as well. I can't wait to try it myself. "Rich guys"?! I'm not that, but I've had my mini for seven years now and it's still wonderful. It's the perfect size for me. Big enough but never too big. It'll do anything any other iPad will do but ALSO fit inside my jacket pocket. It's CRAZY portable. I LOVE it!
Because it's 2021 and wireless headphones and earbuds have come along way to the point you can get cheap and reasonably good pairs. If you really really want a stereo jack you can buy a USB-C to stereo cable.

"DBrand ... put the skin on" You know, you might have something there. DBrand might want to consider that as a business brand line like Nikes Just do it. but ... this comment will wander into the UA-cam comment string basement storage room of nothingness, and this great branding idea will die with it.
I got a 12.9 inch iPad Pro 4th generation 256GB WITH the magic keyboard on Marketplace for $600 last week, and they're both in pristine condition. The iPad mini 5G 64GB from Apple costs more. If you can get these items secondhand, it's almost always economically preferable to purchasing them new from Apple. Just make sure to thoroughly examine the device, and know what to look for - camera functionality, FaceID, battery health, water damage indicator, WIFI connectivity, bluetooth, speakers, etc.
Constructive criticism here: I understand the idea of this channel but it's ridiculous to have 10 minute glorified "first impression" videos that don't give any meaningful insight about the product and essentially work as a free publicity for said product. But then post a full review on LTT that often reiterates the same ideas but also adds actual useful insights about the product. A perfect example is the previous video about iPhone 13. Linus says that Apple can use extra space created by a smaller notch to show more icons. In reality, it doesn't show any extra icons. You would know that if you spent time with the product and made an interesting review. These ShortCircuit videos that are about popular products and not about relatively niche products that our dearest Anthony often reviews, are completely useless, time-wasting videos that serve no real purpose but to bring more watch time to your network of channels.
Came here to say the same thing, but you said it better than I could. This video is embarrassing. Unsure of facts, some misinformation, just clueless. Should have let Anthony run with this one and kept Riley on the sidelines.
Volume buttons make perfect sense if you actually think about it. The pencil takes up the entire right side. And the left side is where a folio/keyboard case would fold over. The great thing about them being on top. Is 90% of the time you more than likely will be in landscape. Which puts them near or right at your thumbs, and the buttons auto rotate. So up/ or to the right is always volume up
Volume and power button placement makes sense. Apple Pencil on one side (right or top in landscape), and you need a clear flat edge to set down the iPad in landscape mode on a table or in a keyboard case. So the volume isn’t there to prevent accidentally being pressed in by its own weight or being inaccessible because that side is on the table or cover
gpu is underclocked, but the iphone pro throttles after 5mins, then got like 30fps for heavy games like genshin, unlike the mini can sustain 60fps even after 15mins, no throttle at all
one random thing that just occurred to me that would be interesting to see tested in these ipads, tablets and the like: Rhythm games. It's somewhat of a niche use case but also a viable test for the "feel" of the system latency
I apologize if someone else already said this in the comments. My understanding is the volume rocker was moved to accommodate the Apple Pencil which takes up the entire side of the iPad Mini.

I actually like the smaller size, I feel like the large size of the air seemed slightly overwhelming. I already have a laptop, I didn't really need a big tablet. The small size is perfect for e-reading and mobile games imo! Which is what I mostly got it for, and it'll be easy to carry around compared to either the macbook or an air/pro.
I use mine mostly to read manga/ comic books off of or the occasional game
The left side is meant to be laid on an origami style case. The top has the buttons, the right has the pencil, the bottom has the speakers and port.
WHY?!
Because then you have to buy both an iPhone and an iPad to be fully covered communication wise! 2 sales instead of 1…
Technically you can iMessage anyone in the apple ecosystem, which is texting if your circle of contacts has an iPhone (and many do nowadays.) You can FaceTime as well, for video calling. Like Nebarus says above me, they clearly want people to make multiple purchases, and that business model has made them a 2.4 trillion dollar business.
it's like they're asking us to jailbreak them and do it that way instead... people will figure it out eventually.
Samsung started doing that in the US and some versions in Canada too.
Chicks: When our clothes do have pockets you can't even fit half an iPhone in there!!
Dudes: 5:26 lol yeet
can't wait for someone to make a full family out of all the ipads
The iPad Mini is almost like Apple’s iPad hardware design team lambasting the iPhone team. They’ve implemented TouchID so seamlessly into the user experience that it just highlights how bad it is that the iPhones don’t have it. They added USB-c, which is a better experience even for people deep in the Apple ecosystem. They improved on the stylus experience on a screen not much larger than the largest iPhone screen. They added stereo speakers, which is so obviously a good idea for phones. The iPad Mini is proof that Apple could make such a better phone experience than it currently does
Apple in 2021 be like: "I'm gonna make some weird sh!t"
The iPad Mini makes sense for reading. I still have a 1st gen version, and it's more comfortable to lie back and hold it that way than it would be for a larger tablet. But, if you're just using it for reading, then there are much more affordable options available.
Still waiting for the day when apple will remove the front facing camera by saying that people don't need it
I don't think they will until there is a rear display added, mostly because Facetime is one of their big brand sales for their ecosystem
A SCREEN? thats so 2016. This years model uses haptic feedback and random clicks to tell you whats on your social media. for $699 more we can ad our Premium HDR wireless dsplay. Charger sold separately.
@@Katoptrys when they can remove the charger just for making more profit then how can you expect them to not remove it sometime in the future. 🤣🤣🤣
@@theepicfailguy127 Literally only because of branding. They probably have the numbers to decide whether they have enough people who use Facetime enough that a removal of a camera could impact their profits
For me the biggest disappointment about the new mini is the bezels. Wish they were smaller
It's amazing ppl are amazed by the small size of the Mini as if they have seen it for the first time when it's been 6th generations and the size has been the same all along.
It hasn't gotten a major update in forever
Im more to how they now looks nice with equal size bezel like the ipad pro and galaxy tabs, lol
7:03
Apparently the volume buttons adjust themselves when you rotate the iPad at the way that the upper button is always the volume up button
So not a bad design
Police use them here in Australia, great tool instead of asking for info over the radio.
6:37 u knew it was coming when Riley review a device with speakers
That bezel area is still crazy big... a good 3/8 inch of no screen.
They gotta do it so you can hold it without accidental touches …
I mean it’s a tablet, not a phone….who needs a bezel-less tablet
@@marcellkhnifess3815 Except other manufacturers like Samsung have software that detects fingers vs other parts of your hands on the screen. Apple just cheaps out on the digitizer on their displays
@@JS-kb4bk yet samsung tablets still have bezels like apple’s iPads…I don’t think it would be smart for them to put the accidental touches sensor on a tablet or iPad cause of the size of em…on phones its just the sides but on ipads its all around and its much bigger area so it costs the companies less if they stick to the bezel
@@marcellkhnifess3815 Samsung tablets do not have large bezels. Are you looking at the low end $200 tablets?
Apple engineers: let’s make a little iPad
LTT: iT’s A pHoOoOoOoOnNnNnEeEe (ape sounds in the background)
Please let Riley host more videos.
He's so fun and entertaining xD
Hey Riley. the sound buttons are on top because the Apple Pencil 2 can attach to either side and when you do, it takes up the entire side.
I LOVE it!
please use this as an ebook reader, test comfort over long period of holding, with case rolled back and hold like the spine of a book
Well that's a tablet so for reading book it's like any other tablet... Would be better to get an Oled based screen for that or even better a e-Ink one
Why no one mentions that they removed headphone jack which was there in iPad mini 5...
Because it's 2021 and wireless headphones and earbuds have come along way to the point you can get cheap and reasonably good pairs. If you really really want a stereo jack you can buy a USB-C to stereo cable.
I love how Riley manages to deliver the whole video while being subtly sarcastic with hints of disdain.
The volume buttons are not on the left side probably because keyboards and covers usually use that side
So it’s not like a phone since it doesn’t make calls
It kinda does…. FaceTime still exists
@@omveerm5634 since I don’t use that how would that help me call in a order ?
Can't make call, can't send or received sms. It's not a phone if it can't do the basics.
Why does Riley always seem like a real life Rick & Morty character lmao
I still have the original I pad mini. I remember using it for office apps for school and it handled it pretty well with a bluetooth keyboard.
But now it can barely do jackshit
ipad mini would be super useful for taking notes while walking around like performing inspections on industrical equipment or something, other than that i'll stick with my 12.9inch one from 2018
Would love to see the same redesign for the Vanilla iPad
the ipad air 2019 frame and screen would be nice
@@bspvdj nah still like the boxed design
@@bspvdj If u like it good 4 u
Little chance though. If they did that the iPad will just become the iPad Air.
@@Jzhongzhi Agreed and as some with the iPad Air 4th gen I think i’ll be great
ipad mini 6 is the first apple product that im gonna buy, brand new.been waiting for them to discard the up and down weird bezel for so long on mini.anything bigger than 8.5 is not a tablet, for me.i could just buy any laptop with detachable display if i want a bigger display on my palm
This review's phone angle is very bizarre... i just want a small tablet.

You know, you might have something there.
DBrand might want to consider that as a business brand line like Nikes Just do it.
but ... this comment will wander into the UA-cam comment string basement storage room of nothingness,
and this great branding idea will die with it.
The iPad Mini is the iPhone I'd buy coming from Android: Fingerprint reader, and using a global universal port are huge.
Man isn't even sure himself about a lot of things that he's saying.
Being a woman and looking at a guy fitting an iPad in his front pocket. Envy.

So up/ or to the right is always volume up
ur literally so cute
Why do you keep looking to your left? Are you being held hostage and forced to speak? 😂

Plot twist: *it’s an iPhablet*
A phone that you can't get spam calls on? Apple are actual geniuses?...
"Are u GLAD to see me, or is that, just an iPad mini in your pocket" ... :))
The thought of DBrand robots skinning people has exquisite mental visuals.
4:18 Riley was gonna say McMagnet and I think that's what we should call it from now on
Short answer: no. It doesn't vibrate and it doesn't have NFC for apple pay.
gpu is underclocked, but the iphone pro throttles after 5mins, then got like 30fps for heavy games like genshin, unlike the mini can sustain 60fps even after 15mins, no throttle at all
one random thing that just occurred to me that would be interesting to see tested in these ipads, tablets and the like: Rhythm games. It's somewhat of a niche use case but also a viable test for the "feel" of the system latency
