    The only purpose of bellybuttons is to connect children to their mothers so I think the eye in her bellybutton might represent her newly found connection to her own inner child. It's like her inner child has awoken.

    While it probably wasn't intentional, I think you can read futures verse as him playing the part of a toxic lover who relies on his gf to fix him. It could also be about a savior complex that a lot of women in toxic relationships develop. Especially when the behaviour of their partner is self destructive along with harming others (possibly Shia Labeouf).

      @@LisaFevral cellophane was the perfect comeback for her after her hiatus showing she was as good if not better than before. I think Caprisongs is an amazing project even it's not as conceptual as Magdalene. I think the fashion and the visuals of the Caprisongs are on par in a different way

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Рік тому +7

      Yeah definitely! Caprisongs is a mixtape so it doesn’t have a central concept, but the music and the visuals are great too

  • @luizaemily5577
    @luizaemily5577 Рік тому +50

    I love how you present your point of view about anything, you consider so many different things and leave some things to our personal interpretation. I love Magdalene, it is such a personal project and she was so brave to expose her feelings to the people who made her feel that way and I love the contradiction between Magdalene to Caprisongs, from sadness and retrospection to a very energetic album.
    And I completely agree with you, there are a lot of exceptions, however, why do women bring men to be the central point of their projects, I feel like this is more common in cinema, you can have a female director, screenwriter, and the main character is a man and the female characters are as deep as they would be in a man's movie.

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Рік тому +10

      thank you! I think this record was definitely a step up for her conceptually too, bc even though her music was always great, she has never done a whole album that was conceptually tied together. And I find it interesting that caprisongs was next, it is a mixtape though, so the intention is a bit different than an album, but I think that it's nice to see her have fun, and the songs are so good!
      I specifically see that centring in a lot of songs that are supposed be about "female empowerment".

    a remarkable album by an astounishing artist! This is one of my favourite pieces of work ever.
    I don't know if this is/was a common practice in other places, but here in Brazil some people tend to put tapes or cover the belly button with cloth in order to protect themselves from "bad eyes". Theoretically to some the belly button is a spiritual door of sorts and when dealing with potentialy bad/envious people, their energy could be "sucked in" through the hole and cause illnesses and such, so, by covering it, you would be protected.
    I imagine that by putting an eye where the bellybutton is supposed to be in the HWY music video, she is reflecting the energy inside herself towards the person she is singing for, exposing that she too needs to be comforted in order to comfort another. I don't know :p

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Рік тому +7

      omggggggg that is so interesting! I didn't know that this is a thing! that is actually very fitting in this context. maybe her inspiration was from her culture or some other place, but it might literally be inspired by this common practice popular in Brazil too. It would make sense I think in the storyline of the video.

      I think patriarchy is a topic that every artist explores at one point(if they are negatively affected by it, same with other systemic oppressions like racism and such), but after they go through that in their art making, I really hope that we get to see more of them exploring other topics bc life has so many more things that are difficult to go through and romance as a framing device for conversations about patriarchy is just not that interesting anymore, especially if the artist themselves have already covered it

    Cleo Sol gave an album of the year album with "Mother" -2021 which explores the relationship she had with mother, and the relationship she will/is having with her baby.
    She did no interview on youtube and no music video.
    Little Simz explore gave an equally interesting album with "Sometimes l Might Be Introvert" 2021. She does talk about men with maybe the exception of her father.

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Рік тому +2

      I wonder why she didn't do any visuals for her music. I prefer somewhat of a gesamtkunstwerk when it comes to projects like this, but to each their own. I listened to Little Simz, and watched her videos too. I find some of her stuff just a bit too focused on identity as gender which is something I don't quite resonate with, but not on every track!

      @@LisaFevral @Lisa Fevral Yes with Little Simz she had a focus on identity as a woman, more say introspection. Seeing where she stands in the world with little focus on romance which is different and plus. The album takes time to grow.
      Cleo sol on the other hand was/is more of a reclusive act. It wouldnt say be a complete work minus the video but the lack of video somewhat allows everyone to make a video of their own with video. Strange this day and age to have no video.
      i.e had to search what "gesamtkunstwerk" means. Its german for a total work of art.

    • @LisaFevral
      @LisaFevral  Рік тому +2

      don't get me wrong I still really enjoy Little Simz music tbh, she's got something very straightforward in her lyrical delivery which I personally appreciate.
      You know I can definitely respect the decision not to make visuals for an album. I've met a lot of people who love music who couldn't care less for visuals, and I think that makes sense. I'm just the type of person who prefers installation art that takes up the whole room instead of a painting on the wall, you know? it doesn't make it better objectively, but it does make it more appealing to me. Also being reclusive makes a lot of sense to me. I wish I could be an artist just doing art without having to be out there, but that's a decision which would make me unable to support myself, let alone people I love.

    absolutely one of my favorite albums ever im so glad you did a video on this ! I noticed a lot of eye symbolism in this album aside from the video for 'Home With You', but what immediately comes to my mind aside from the obvious reference in 'Thousand Eyes', is the video for 'Cellophane' . I dont know if this was just me overanalyzing or if anyone else caught but when the ceiling opens up, the same frame that you mentioned looked like fabrics tearing away I thought it resembled a really detailed eye, like in the photos with the macro lenses being used where you can really see the detail and all the layers in the iris. I also know Twigs is spiritual at least in some way (I haven't looked too much into it) but maybe the sphynx like being descending from the heavens is a reference to her higher self or something similar. Again on cellophane (and this point might be a stretch) I was thinking about how Magdalene was "cast out" of the bible basically in the same way FKA is cast down into that underworld like setting, or even maybe in the same way Lillith was cast out of Eden. The Lillith point would at least tie in with the same point she carries about being "attached" to a man or a male figure, in the same way Eve was, in the same way Mary Magdalene was and in the same way FKA herself was... those are just some theories though! I really enjoyed this vedeo thank you for covering this piece of art!

    Watching the section regarding Twigs' inspirations and how Magdalene's been historically misrepresented, it came to mind a really interesting text by Margareth King, titled Women of Renaissance. The author explains how a great deal of notorious women of Renaissance had their works and fame preceeded and overpowered by the category, usually linked to their relations with men, in which they were assigned by society: daughter, mother, wife, widow... To the point that in Sofonisba's (an Italian Renaissance painter) 1554 self-portrait, there's an inscription stating she was a virgin at the time. I don't really know where I'm going with this comment tbh, it's just something I find really interesting (and repulsive but anywho)

      @@LisaFevral oh so in the painting, she appears holding a little book/notebook that contains the inscription (and i had to revisit a paper i cowrote, not to get this wrong) “Sophonisba Angussola virgo seipsam fecit 1554”, which indicates the work was made by virgin Sophonisba in 1554.
      Since she was a young and single woman who actively participated in the court and in aristocratic circles (among men), her stated virginity was a sort of credential, yk? This way she (in theory) wouldn't be labeled as a prostitute 😔

    This album is still (imo) her best and most self-defining piece of work that she has released. It's definitely something that many women can really and truly feel esp as a WOC. Every time I listen to this album it feels like I am being transported into a baroque/renaissance utopia. I dance and it's a beautiful experience, indescribale really 🌌
    If you are struggling with likeable male artists😂 a male artist who really captivates this feeling for me most is Hozier; his music is beautifully dark and very poetic, there are a lot of meanings to analyse and unravel.

    Great video! I also agree that I'd love to hear more artists tackle more than just romantic (typically monogamous) relationships but uhh straight rich folks don't really have much to them outside their dating lives I guess lmao (this obviously referring to the mainstream, part of an artist's marketing is their "date-ability" too so).
    Hozier and Little Simz really do it for me in terms of lyricism and what they talk about in their music! But I'm definitely gonna check out FKA Twigs when I can :D

      yeah, a big part of it is the fact that people who have a lot to say that is of value have little opportunity to nurture their craft and get better, as well as no opportunities to actually have their work out there getting traction. Artists like twigs are definitely an anomaly, hopefully there will be more artists getting traction like her.

    So about the the controversial question: I’d like to point one album that did this which is ’Stand For Myself’ by Yola
    It’s a pandemic album but it’s also an album that’s about (healthily) letting go of relationships, knowing self worth, and growing into your own after ending a relationship (which the word relationship is generalized and could mean anyone you have a relationship with)
    Personally, I’m not a big fan of Americana/country music because of the trope of it being repetitive but these songs are fluid enough in genre that the album as a whole don’t fall into that stereotype
    If I have peaked your interest in that album at all, then I recommend in giving it a try
