    Hey RJ, i have a bit of a problem with my MTB. The chain is too loose for my riding, because I do a lot of jumps and bumps. Even on a quite small landing the chain bounces around and makes ugly noises and on bigger landings it sometimes even jumps a gear. I had it changed to a brand new one, and the rear sprockets also. Could the worn front sprocket be the case here for the chain being too loose?
    Really need to find a solution to this, it kind of limits my riding now...

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  7 років тому

      I can't tell you if if the stuff is worn. You can try some different gearing combinations, that might help. You might be able to increase the tension on your rear derailleur cage. That might help too.

    • @jump3erlt
      @jump3erlt 7 років тому

      Okey, I'll have in mind. Another thing that came in my mind is could this occurance be normal? My bike has a 9 speed sprocket in the back and a 3 speed in the front. Maybe the wide gearing requires a longer chain and on certain ratios the chain becomes a bit loose, thus causing all the bad stuff.

    Great video - Are all chains created equal? How do you spec a chain for your bike etc.? Were can i get chain break device? What is a master link and were to buy it? thank you

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 років тому +1

      Chains vary in quality and price. You generally buy a chain based on the number of cogs on the freewheel/cassette (ie a 7 speed freewheel gets a chain made for 6/7/8 speeds). The master link I used came with this chain. A chain breaker can be bought at a bike shop or online, or anyplace that sells bike tools.

    Question first nice video i'm renewed to biking 20 yr break . chain question hardtail style bike 7 speed cassette when the bike rode on flat terrain no chain noise . yes when i hit gravel trail it seems just one trail my chain makes a sound like its wanting to come off when i just coast . as long as i peddle its fine no noise at all . chain is new just got the bike three weeks ago its a ribble bike i had to have it shipped across the pond . is pulling the bike wheel back a little a idea tad nervous at messing with anything considering the bike is not cheap . the bike runs fine i use it for just park and towpath trails at 50 i'm not going to be racing and jumping in the air i just wanted a quality bike and to be able to last a long time and ride it down trails .i've been riding about 5 months on another bike 1200 miles ribble is only 3 weeks ( maybe 300 miles ridden )new to me i ride every day weather is not a factor i ride

  • @zubuxstein
    @zubuxstein 7 років тому +1

    The best way to check chain wear is by moving it left to right within its links. Not toward the front or back of the back, but left to right of the bike, not parallel. If it warps a lot, its worn out. A new chain has some movement, but is very shallow and not too curved warped to the sides. Of course this test must be done with a clean used chain.

    • @AsiAzzy
      @AsiAzzy 6 років тому +1

      That is a verry loose feel of a worn chain. New narrow chains are meant to have quite a bit of sideways flex for proper shifting. Only single speed chains and industrial chains have little to no sideways flex in them as they are never forced that way in use.chain wear must be done lengthwise as it "stretches" (pins get worn allowing for slack of the plates to rest at longer pitch.. the plates themselves rarely stretch)

    Hey, really love your videos and find them super useful! I have a similar issue, my chain is sagging when i am not pedalling, when pedalling it is totally fine. Its also friction shifting (Nishiki Arrow Speed 1984) and the chain is the right lenght. Do you think that a broken b screw could cause this effect and if so, is there anything i could do to fix it?

    I had an issue with my gears slipping on putting a ten speed chain on a 9 speed cassette. Everyone said change cassette but it wasn't worn down. Eventually I used the chain length formula from park tools website and turned out my chain was too long even though I matched it up with existing 9 speed chain. . I took out one full link two rivits back and no more slipping.I think it was because I unscrewed the b screw all the way out and I think this took some tension off the chain.

    I accidentally made my chain a little too short when I put a long cage derailleur on my bike the other day but I was able to add the links needed back again without a master link or anything. It's been holding up fine for the last couple hundred miles, been checking it regularly. It was not easy to to add the links back again, and it certainly does pay to measure twice and break it once.

      how does a worn cassette affect the chain?can someone explain this to me?

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  8 років тому

      +Trippin Josh As the chain wears, it it gets longer. It starts to rub at the edges of the teeth on the sprockets making the spaces between the teeth wider and more sloped. When a new chain is installed, it is more likely to skip, and also the abnormal spacing and shape of the teeth can cause the chain to wear faster.

    • @jonandersonmd7994
      @jonandersonmd7994 8 років тому

      +Trippin Josh It doesn't ... the chain is stretched , not 'worn' so much .. A strong rider will go thru chains ...

  • @hafiz8379
    @hafiz8379 5 років тому

    If you replace the chain wouldn’t you also have to replace the cassette. Because a brand new chain might not be compatible with a worn out cassette

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 років тому

      Only if the freewheel/cassette are worn out. Chains usually wear out faster than cassettes/freewheels.

    • @hafiz8379
      @hafiz8379 5 років тому

      RJ The Bike Guy wouldn’t you also have to replace the crank set because that will also ware out eventually just like the cassette. The chain is just replaced more often. Wouldn’t cogs in the derailleur also ware out

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  5 років тому +1

      The chainrings wear out also, but not as fast as the chain. The derailleur cogs can wear out, but it takes long time. Replace your chain when the chain gauge shows wear, and your drivetrain will last longer. But feel free to replace your entire drivetrain every time the chain wears if you want, but it's going to be very expensive.
