      i am in dire need of help!
      my bike tries to kill me on 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th gear, i make sure i down shift and "seat" gear properly before putting pressure on the chain while climbing, and the chain "skips"
      meaning that it feels like the chain lets go 100% or af it the cassette has missing teethe and you get to those teeth and it lets go for 1 second,
      not good when you are putting all your pressure on the pedal and just goes "CLING!" and all your weight goes sideways!!
      the bike never did that new and only after a few rides i start having issues with it and never had worked correctly after the first tune up..

    Hi RJ: Update on my chain skipping problem on my 3x9 touring bike: Turns out that the culprit was a worn middle chainring! Everything else is new on that bike, so I should have thought of the chainrings earlier, but when you're stomping down on the pedal while riding it's impossible to keep a close eye on the movement of the chain. It was only when I asked my wife to look at the cassette while I stomped on the pedal with the bike on the floor and the brakes set that she exclaimed, "the cassette isn't moving, you dummy!" This has proved to be one life lesson that I will never forget....

    I have a 17 year old hybrid with a 3x6 freewheel setup. Shifting was awful. Changed the chain and freewheel but not much better. The main culprit turned out to be the rear derailleur which has lost a lot of its spring so the chain tension was too low. However carefully the limit screws and indexing were set it would not go up and down reliably. A new one completely fixit it. I had a second problem of shifting getting slow and sometimes delayed for several seconds. This was due to dirt getting in the cable to the rear derailleur. The cable comes in three outer sections so lots of places for dirt to get in, but easily cleaned as well.
    I have a new bike now with Shimano 105 groupset. The technology has come so far in the last 20 years, it’s in a different league.

    Thank you very much for this video. I bought a used Trek 7.4a few years ago that had a persistent problem with the rear derailleur. It just didn't shift as smoothly as it should. I tried the standard adjustments. I took it to the LBS. All without success. Then I found this video. It suggested replacing the shift cable. I replaced the rear derailleur shift cable and wow! Problem solved!
    Before I threw out the old cable, I inspected it. I found a kink in the cable that would explain the poor shifting. Thanks for the great videos. Please keep them coming.

      Sadly no. I have since learned that not all LBS are equal. Some are more new bike assemblers that bike fixers. The good news is that since the LBS experience, I decided to rely on my own 2 hands. I bought some a bike stand, some tools and have since refurbished a few vintage bikes. All the expertise I needed was in your videos. I've also founds a new LBS for the stuff I'm not yet up to fixing. Thanks again for your videos!

    Excellent video. My well used bike was working fine, but I thought it might be time for a new chain. The bike mechanic told me the chain was so worn I would have to replace the sprockets..but I didn’t believe him. They looked okay to me. But after fitting the chain, I literally could not move the bike, as the chain slipped freely over all sprockets under any load. Amazing! As the bike is old, I have refitted the old chain and everything is back to normal. No skipping except on the smallest rear cog.

    Great video! I have a bike that was locked up outside in the elements for a long time without use (thanks a little to COVID and a bit to the weather). I immediately relubricated the chain but found it skipping. The cassette , derailer and chain seems to still be good. I'm now under the assumption that the chain links are stiff (due to being out in the elements for so long). I used some oil to continue cleaning them. Otherwise, I might just replace the chain. Thanks for the help and tips!

    • @David-ty5jk
      @David-ty5jk 2 роки тому +3

      You should get a new chain and pay to get it placed on. I'm telling you no amount of money saved is worth attempting to do the chain all alone if you deal with links. You can follow the instructions all you want you won't get nowhere and with some skill and determination you might take a few links off the chain but you will never be able to put the chain back together without an actual machine or taking the bike to a shop where they can do it by machine

    Those binding chain links can be a real 'gotchya' situation. I spent hours trying to dial in the derailleur before noticing the bump from two binding links as the chain passed through the jockey wheels - unstuck those links, and boom, everything ran perfect. What a lesson that was.... and that was with a new chain as well, surprisingly.

I have changed chainrings, and adjusted, but still I get a skip back and on to the same gear. Hmmm, I like my lightweight bike and I cannot ride it at full speed as that is the only time it happens, on the 3rd and 7th top gears.

    I know this video is old, but just in case this happens to help someone out - I had the chain keep jumping gears without me getting anywhere near the gear levers. I took it to 4 different repairs and they:
    1.) Replaced my chain
    2.) replaced a part that I don't know how to translate - maybe the bearings that fit through the back wheel?
    3.) shortened the chain by 1 link even after the first repair shop charged 50 bucks for the first 2 fixes, probably getting it right. The logic was that the chain might be a bit loose and that's why it jumped.
    4.) Adjusted the rear derailleur
    5.) a couple other things that I can't remember
    At the end of the day, the problem persisted and it made me hate riding my bike, because during riding, the chain would just skip gears, the pedal would lose resistance and my leg would push through unexpectedly and violently, hurting my knee badly sometimes.
    Took it to one last guy before giving up on the whole bike, and all he did was replace all the cables and cable housings, and it's been working for months on end without a single hitch now.
    Hope it helps someone!

    • @7binus9
      @7binus9 5 років тому +1

      Just to add a statement, because I don't wanna give misguided information:
      I know the guy who actually fixed the bike's problem ALSO adjusted the rear derailleur (I quote him that he only adjusted it "a little bit"). That means that it could've been the reason on its own the entire time, and that the first person adjusting it didn't tune it perfectly maybe. I don't know how big of a role the changing of the cables and cable housings made, but I hope it's also a valid contender for the list of possible causes for this particular problem.
      Anyway, best of luck to anyone dealing with this! Thank you RJ for helping everyone with your wealth of knowledge and experience!

I have a chain slip issue, this always comes up when I am pressing down on the pedals, such as when starting to ride when stationery, this also occurs when I am riding up a steep incline, even though I gear down and select the low gear, the chain slips when pressing down. The slip does not occur in any other condition

      The drive train components all wear together. Replacing just the chain may not fix the problem. As the front chain rings are alloy, they wear more than the steel rear cogs. On my over 30 year old bike, when I replaced the chain, it slipped worse than before. On inspection, I replaced the front chain rings, and it was better, but the rear freewheel was still slipping. Got a new freewheel and all was copacetic. Moral: save time and frustration and just replace all of them.

    RJ,
    First, thank you for all of the great videos! I’ve been able to get into maintaining my bike w/ them!
    Second,, I’m a newbie so apologies if my terminology is inaccurate.
    Finally, having an issue post-overhaul of my 1991/1992 Bridgestone MB-4. The drivetrain is slipping (forward, not across gears) in select gear combinations when solid amount of pressure is applied pedaling, especially uphill (i.e. middle front gear w/ second smallest rear gear). Some gear combinations seem ok. Wasn't able to figure out cause from this video.
    Replaced original chain with KMC Z51 Bicycle Chain (6 & 7 Speed , 1/2 x 3/32-Inch).
    Front crankset/chainrings are original: 24, 36, 46T
    Original cassette was: Shimano 7 speed cassette ((Shimano CS-HG30-I am). 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, 24, 30T. They no longer make 11-30T.
    Replacement cassette is: Shimano CS-HG50 7-Speed Cassettes (13-15-17-20-23-26-30T)
    I quadruple checked chain length/links against the original and new is same number of links but a tad bit shorter due to stretch in 25yr old chain.
    Could it be that I put the front chainrings on backwards during overhaul? Do I have a chain/cassette/crankset mis-match?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Jeff

    Very useful, but what about the chain slipping on the chain wheels? I replaced the chain and freewheel/gears on my MTB, but chain still slipped, but not as badly. Replacing the chain set sorted the problem. The chain slipped on the middle chain ring, but not the largest, presumably because It was torqued less.
    Is chain slip less likely to be caused by a worn chain wheel than a gear on the freewheel?

    • @reecenewton3097
      @reecenewton3097 2 роки тому

      My new chain slipped with the original freewheel and middle chainwheel, on a front triple crankset. The middle is the one that I had used most. The large (high speed) and granny (low speed) were used less: they were still operable, but the middle was pretty bad when I inspected it closely. It's an aluminum alloy, softer than steel. The cogs on the freewheel are steel and still have their factory profile. So I replaced the middle chainwheel and the problem went away. The exact same thing happened with a friend's bike, and he replaced the middle chainring also. So you really have to check all three areas: freewheel, chain, and chainrings. A chain and the cogs wear together, so sometimes a new chain won't work well because it doesn't mesh correctly with the old cogs.
