Today we talk about homesteading and off grid channels who use click bait, and who are faking their lifestyle for clicks, views and to make money off sponsorships. Honestly it is diluting the message of homesteaders who are real and live this lifestyle. We are sick of it and today its being called out and exposed. #offgrid #homesteading #dougandstacy

Public figures are open to scrutiny and criticism in a free society.

A public figure (person) who is known by a large mass of a given populous. Most public figures will utilize the media to get a message across to the public which helps further an agenda, thus the power public figures wield in shaping public opinions and perceptions is potentially huge. The viewer, in its role not only as a watchdog, claims the right to information about the private lives of such publics figures should be published as it is in the public interest given the power they have. Public figures are open to scrutiny and criticism.
Your showing your lack of Knowledge of how us old folks use to live. We had no indoor plumbing, wood & coal stoves. Grow knowledge not stupid! Jealousy looks pukey.

However, I see all over the place that too many people still don't get it - maybe they don't want to. I am really grateful that you posted this. I do know that not everyone agrees or is on the same page regarding interpretation. - and that is OK.
It is easy to fall for love bombing favors - "see no evil", But, there is another side, Take care as someone has a lot of time to have multiple personalities.
So, are we going into a food shortage? I'm so confused.

Without picking sides here I just went to both channels and looked back through the years of videos. Both appear to be homesteading in the sense that they have chickens and gardens and tell how to preserve foods and/cook food. How to heat your homes and prep. How to cut a fallen tree up for firewood, how to put up fences for animals, how to prep hay and barns for animals etc. If we are not living in a persons home 24/7 we do not know exactly what goes on their property and that's yours also. I have seen in many many videos that Stacey has at least 9 raised beds and not 3 like was mentioned on this channel. If anyone knows what they are actually doing you can feed your family on 9+ raised beds. Of course that depends on how many people you are feeding and how much each person consumes. It is easy to pick a side and talk, it's harder to prove speculations. Tsc, however, if they did indeed sponsor an event that is not in line with a person's religious beliefs or that is harmful to our children in any way should be held responsible or people should just take their business elsewhere. A UA-cam channel though belongs to the person who started that channel and if they want to share how much groceries are going up in the store OR what political happenings are going on that will affect gas, food, utilities etc OR what secular events going on in the world could not be pleasing to God above that is their decision. But I do not believe bashing channels out of speculation is the right thing to do either. Simply if you do not like a channel then do not watch it, just scroll on like I'm fixing to do away from this channel!

Ah excuse me ,we lived in a 12x12 cabin.With no shower ,no toilet ,no running water ,1896 cook stove ,washed my dishes in the creek .So don't say it can't be done.
Oh it can be done, but no one WANTS to live like that. Sure I can live a certain way but its not realistic for most people or families. For example you can live on the street or in a tent, but its not a good way to live and i'd never tell anyone to live like that.
What the hell gives you the right to say that no one wants to live like that? We are living in a world today where some people have to live like that. I thought you called yourself a homesteader! You choose to live in a house with a fully functional kitchen, and some people choose to live in a house that’s more simpler .
Some people don’t need all the fancy things in life. Apparently you need everything in a house in order to live. You talk about prepping, so what are you going to do when you have absolutely nothing can you build a campfire outside and cook your food because my dear, it may come down to that.

People can watch the videos Take them as good advice or not and do not have to buy their products. As far as the guy who made a video that He won a old rusty Pick up truck makes me questioning if this video was created by people with bias And it may possibly be a fake Created by another Homesteader.People will go to any extent To slander the other If it gives them a benefit. But shaming and labeling subscribers off tgeir channel As cult members is not only an insult, it is dangerous. That's where you guys are going too far. I'm sure many of his SUSCRIBERS take theirs video's with A grain of salt. But them giving people ideas how to build stuff, Solar grill, etc. Does not make subscribers cult members. Patara has said for *years and years* how much hard work all this is. (I’ve been watching her since at least 2018) She has talked at length about how important it is to have “backups for your backups” and yet has a COLOSSAL garden. She has talked at length about how much work those gardens are and that they are STILL not enough for their family. That’s why she keeps the Aldi and a Dollar General hot. She’s so frank about everything. I’m grateful for her tough-as-nails honestly about this lifestyle because when I have setbacks, I know that I’m not alone in those setbacks.
It’s such a shame to see the people who have seen this lifestyle as a chance to make money and cultivate a sort of “persona” gaining such fame.
It's about the money utube and Hollywood is one of the same you take free gifts ask. Viewers for donation they may start honest but turn corrupt

My husband and I live in a 500 sq ft cabin with only a wood stove and a compost toilet and we live here full time in northern Michigan. We don’t have a lot of equipment or a lot of money.

Patara also always makes a point to kindly thank people for the gifts sent to her PO and then as politely as possible asks them NOT to 😂 she tells people take care of YOU first. I just absolutely love her attitude. I wouldn’t even care if I found out she was faking it (although she does enough videos on cooking, canning, gardening etc that she’s clearly living that life.
She has also mentioned that she is not interested in being off grid. I’ve not found her to be dishonest. WE are these ppl’s clients, and we make them money. Would I do business with a dishonest person if I knew them to be so? Nope!

All the old ways she's showing is on the mark because I and my family on both sides have lived this way for generations. Patara is the real deal I put my hand on it. The other two I will not say that about them. Remember Doug and Stacy gave away some high dollar gifts didn't they give away a pickup truck?
I just came across this video . Thanks I never actually thought about the points you made. I do live in a cabin in an extremely cold part of Europe and in winter we are NOT looking so happy and warm with our one wood stove. My kitchen looks like a storage room and I couldn't keep my kitchen as pristine as Stacy seems to do especially no washing hanging everywhere to dry and in winter and everything including myself is completely covered in mud. It's very sad that people are depicting a perfect life how easy everything is when the reality is very different and if it's inspiring people to go and live more simply then it's setting them up for a hard fall when they discover that it's not so easy to heat your water or to collect all the water you need for you and your family and all your animals from a rain water collection system( without many issues constantly). Thank you for the food for thought❤... I do enjoy Patara as other have said she never said she is off grid and it's quite obvious she is honest about life ❤
As far as the lgbtq thing, that was real. I did my homework, as I do with everything I see on line like that. Some of the tractor supply stores were very embarrassed about the whole thing so they denied it completely

I don’t think Doug and Stacy promote themselves as preppers. Their deal is living off grid, not prepping. I know Doug seems overly political and I ignore some of those. But Stacy is awesome and I love their channel. I have learned from them.

Janice, you are correct. There seems to be a lack of understanding by this channel about the difference in homesteading versus prepping. I believe this was a blatant defamation of Doug and Stacy's channel to try to promote themselves.

There was so much that they said that was so naive, like there’s no way Stacy washes her clothes in a manual washing machine because there’s no way they’d get their clothes that clean. Really?? I grew up around the Amish. This is how they wash their clothes and their clothes were just as clean as those using electric washing machines. They also said there’s no way you could get everything done that needs to be done on a homestead if you lived the way D&S live. Again…really?? Our forefathers seemed to be able to. Heck people in the 1800s, early 1900s did. They also claimed you never see Doug doing anything on their homestead. REALLY???? He’s constantly out with the sheep, horses, putting hay in the barn, etc. I don’t watch this channel. I just stumbled across it one day. This was the first video I saw and it’s my last. These two youngsters seemed very new to homesteading…very naive…when it comes to the comments they were making. If you want real homesteading info that’s not tabloid-ish and has a mature take on things, check out Perma Pastures Farm, Curtis Stone, Health and Homestead, the Modern Yeoman, Strand Farm, just to name a few. By the way…the other thing that bothered me was when they used a clip from Perma Pastures Farm implying he was talking about D&S. They took him out of context but were hoping their audience would be too stupid to notice or figure it out on their own. Billy addressed this on his podcast and said he didn’t even know they used his video until people started reaching out to him and that it was taken completely out of context. THAT’S the kind of people you’re dealing with here. No thanks.

I am no youngster and share my knowledge and skills, along with what I have, with many. It builds family and community. People learn to take care of each other and maybe grow into taking care of many more, like the critters and environment. Not talking about the ones raised ignorant, clueless and lazy that have zero desire to contribute. Talking about those genuinely interested in gaining working knowledge, sharing and learning needed skills, being a contributing and positive asset to a wider ‘community,’ regardless of how small.
Well they post it to youtube so they can monetize their lifestyle. Im sure it beats a traditional job 100 percent.

We make the decision if we are going to pretend that evil MFers aren’t planning the destruction of this nation or be vigilant and prepared for whatever they try to do to us. When the weather person tells me a hurricane is headed my way I don’t say they are trying to instill fear. I heed the warning and make sure all of my preps are ready.
I recently made a comment to Doug's "Why I can't support Sound of Freedom" video. Doug was argumentative in his reply to me. He then made a follow-up video regarding the "issues" with you guys in the comments section. One thing I know about frauds, they over react in order to make the ones saying the right thing looks like liars. I defended Doug during the Pantara debacle, but now, I see - she was right. In my opinion Doug is a fraud. Thanks for the video.

IMO, Trump set the bar on a lot of the behavior we see these days, as in Doug's change in 'personality' from years ago. It's like he has had a radical change.

Doug will be and say whatever he needs to, to make the sale. He is a salesman. He has even said himself that he was a career salesman in his past. He also had a YT channel before the one he has now. That previous channel was the one that I watched and saw what he really was. That channel did not go well for him, so he shut it down, waited a while and came back in with a whole new channel and a whole new personality. He was a whole new character. The character that 1 million plus subscribers fell in love with. Like any successful entertainer, Doug knows how to work the audience and keep their attention.
Both sides need to get over this. And get back to making videos on homesteads what thousands of us wants to see. We don't really care about the drama

I watched all there homesteading videos recently with the tractor supply saga and I think they are mostly real maybe slightly glamorized for UA-cam as far as homesteading but they have been doing it 10+ years, Doug has never been quite as religious as this year but has definitely mentioned it a few times subtly, as far as prepping the number one prep is a homestead, I also believe based on the evidence the tractor supply stuff was all true and alot of homesteaders shop there including myself but not anymore, I think being it is an important store to homesteading I think he should call it out and it is important for homesteaders to know what they are doing. You mentioned not believing there laundry I live off grid and do mine in a 5 gallon bucket and feed tubs and I don't doubt most of there stuff. Also Pedophilea is not a political issue just saying.
Exactly what I was thinking too! I've watched D&S and Patera for a couple of years now and I have just the opposite feelings as this young couple. I don't think Patera does anything but pimp Aldi and Costso! I think the younger generation cannot fathom how people lived 150 years ago and can't put together that D&S are in the 50's and started this journey 11 years ago. I sure hope that in 11 years our homestead is running as smoothly as theirs is right now! And just FYI - Log cabins don't need insulation LOL and Stacey has an outdoor kitchen that is almost as big as her house that she uses for all the food preservation. You're right - the #1 prep is homesteading and should be learning to eat 'in season' so that you don't have to have a 'Costco' size food storage of HIGHLY PROCESSED foods! And lastly, I agree 10000% that Pedophilia IS NOT political and should be called EVERY TIME! Good luck to you on your homestead!

Dang. You guys would have died seeing my mothers kitchen when i was growing up. She had about the same amount of counter space as Stacie has. We didn't have running water inside the house until i was in the 8th grade. She did have a gas cookstove. We had wood heat. And the north wind could be felt coming through the walls in the winter. We did have electricity in 3 rooms. My mom's garden was about the size of their gardens and yes, our family of 5 lived mostly off that food all year. And that's not Amish clothing he's wearing. Amish men wear black pants and a white shirt. What a take. Personally, after 18 years of trekking down a hill in a -20° snowstorm to go to an outhouse, I'm glad they have a warm bathroom to use in the winter.

I've only seen Patara a few times, and my impression is that she complains a lot about many things. I'm only 5 minutes in and all I see are "Christians" being nasty to one another, threatening each other, and somebody is lying. Hmmmm...real Christians.
What got me was the fact that they leave their house like 4x a day. That's not saving gas $.

With all due respect Doug and Stacy are wonderful people and send out valuable information in my opinion. Also Appalachian Homestead, she is sweet and says her opinion and some points to help people. That's what it's all about really is trying to help others through UA-cam and I may not agree with everything they're saying but I certainly appreciate the effort that they're doing to try to help people stock up and get prepared for an emergency

There are a lot of YT channels not just homesteading that are popular and put out good material, but may believe in a topic that is untrue and release it into the world. To say that all these channels are fake is just throwing shade around. It is unfortunate that some people, Creators and Followers believe and spread these things around. It is important for everyone to do their own research before coming to own conclusion. YT is just like any other social media platform, where it is unregulated and anything can be posted for anyone to be consumed and shared.

We are living off grid right now because we list our home in a fire back in March. IT IS FREAKING HARD!!! We had NO time for a garden set up this year because we were just trying to survive the weather. Hauling water, figuring out a bathroom and shower situation day to day, eating more than just snack food because we had only a small solar powered ice chest that could be trusted to always stay running because it depended on how much sun exposure it had therefore how much extra that it ran. It has been a wikd ride!! But GOD has gotten us through it all and we are starting to get a handle on doing this finally. But it has taken 8 months. One son and his family have been doing this for 15 months (by choice) and are only now starting to get a handle on it. Thus is a hard hard life. We have SO MUCH respect for our ancestors now!! 😂

I agree with you Eric and areial live on that farm. They sold a large homestead to come to Alaska and are frugal with money. They are hunters and gatherers with a good vegetable and chicken farm. Not sure where this couple are coming from tearing down other bloggers. Let us viewers decide, I’ve watched a number of sites and soon turn off from anyone I don’t relate to.

Tbh, I stopped following Patara because her tone toward what she considers "outsiders" is very off-putting. My family was deeply rooted in both Tennessee and Kentucky in the 1800s. When we moved here and started our little one-acre farm in 2021, I asked her often for advice and either didn't receive responses, or found my questions being floated during her videos and addressed like some big-city northerner was coming to ruin her way of life. "Homesteader" label or not, we're all here to help and to grow and to have fun and try new things. Hers was a piss-poor attitude to have toward people who're trying to reclaim a family's old way of life or carve out a new one. So I have no more interest in following people who behave in an exclusionary way. My own channel is in its infancy, and literally all we try to do is show what we do. No judgment, no attitude.

Never miss Patara. I learn so much from her channel. She has a lot of great suggestions and ideas. I have chickens now, in the city limits, she shops all over the place, which is what we do. We bake from scratch and we buy ready made foods. Preppers for the most part do can often and purchase often. She is real. You guys are real too! I love that! Patara found wood by her where she’s able to fill a truck with the scraps at a lumber yard for $25.00! I looked into that and found one 30 minutes away where I can do it for FREE! What a game changer that was! That’s because we are 65 and 66 and my husband needs a surgery on his shoulder in a few weeks and had back surgery a month ago. We are still out there splitting wood getting ready to save money on electric over the winter. Keeping it real. You guys keep it real. Saw thru some of the others quite quickly. How could DAndS have empty shelves behind them in the cracker box🧐? I would have crap piled up in every corner and that shelf would look like wall of everything under the sun. Be real careful because with the newer treated wood it can release toxic chemicals when burned and the color is not that distinct from regular wood. Good luck with everything.
They dehydrate some of their food, ferment a lot, they can a lot of it, they also have a root cellar under the cabin, and a few years into homesteading they built an outdoor kitchen for the hot weather. (I have friends who did that also, it makes canning a lot more pleasant).
To be honest with you all, As a business owner, farmer, I don't know where any homesteader finds the time to get anything done while finding the time to shoot videos. Something will diminish as you can't serve 2 masters.

I would like to know where in the scriptures he thinks that God commands a husband to control his wife or any female in his family. A husband does have more authority but with that authority also comes responsibility. The Bible also commands the husband to love his wife as Christ loves the Church and to give his life for it. The scriptures also says that if a husband mistreats his wife that his prayers will be hindered. Also a husband knows that a wife is a good gift. A wife is a help meet. So a wise husband will listen to what his wife has to say and considers the advice that she gives whenever he makes decisions for his family.
I know nothing of Doug and Stacey before they became homesteaders but I would just about guarantee they were financially well off before they went off grid. It’s easy to “live off the land” when you have plenty of money the email asking everyone to send a dollar bill turned me off permanently.
I don’t like their channel but they didn’t have money. They sold what they had and minimized how they lived.
I live off my land and have for the past 6 years. I have no other income except for my farm and my wife works full-time for the farm as well. We are by no means wealthy and I had to scrape and claw my way by hard work to where I am. It's definitely not an easy life. The problem is people don't know what it means to work hard anymore and the rewards that come along with it
Doug mentioned he used to be a car salesman.
Stacey I suspect was a teacher and her income until she retired was all that supplemented the farm in the beginning while he stayed home and built/worked there. Their only startup money was selling their city living stuff.
@@sam12587if she was a teacher before she retired, her retirement income would be more than $30,000 per year and could be as high as $50,000 per year, so they could live very well off grid on that. Once she gets to SS age, you can add the SS income to that.
Might want to go watch their videos from 10 years ago and find out who they are before you run your mouth and pass judgement. They are straight up and honest about who they are and how they got where they are. They don't have much either. Go straight to the source and the facts before jumping to conclusions based on gossip and "feelings"
You need to Google the amount of $ Stacy and Doug make. They make over a million! I put that as a comment once when I was watching them…I made a comment that I now knew why Doug was always singing-because he was making so much money!! He didn’t deny it but rather put up laughing emojis. I mentioned that my research had REALLY educated me. I was extremely upset when he started throwing off on the movie The Sound of Freedom. That’s when I knew I had to unsubscribe. Something is not right! One woman was quick to respond to me that they were “very generous.” Every click…every “like”…every comment we make is making these ppl TONS of money! I appreciate your comments. I REALLY do not want to be gullible and to enrich dishonest ppl. You cannot imagine how I felt once I found out they are millionaires! As for me I bought this place to grow food and nut trees and the oil company contractors moved next door next to the city limits where our kids play sports and the contractors started spraying, dumping fracking waste on top of the ground and spraying to clean out the tankers. Just about the time my pistachio trees started to have nuts and with all the spraying of chemicals I would not sell any of the nuts, peaches, apricots, pecan, asparagus or melons due to contamination from the fracking. Fracking waste has well over 2000 different chemicals and our EPA, State gov. would not do anything about all the contaminating. In fact my gov said i did not have a case. So for 9 years i had to put up with the spraying of chemicals and now all my trees are diseased or dying and i have never made a dime from it. but at least I do not have to pay taxes. I have payed at least 40 loads of chips to soak up the oil spill and chemicals spills. OH and no layer will take the case to sue anyone, This is a DEMOCRAT state. Um….A few things….
In 2008 I bought a washboard and washed my clothes that way because I was very poor. I bought the washboard in Toledo, Ohio because that was the only place that still sold them. Then I would hang it outside.
Canning food doesn’t make you a prepper. I live in Utah and ALL of my neighbors and in-laws have canned and frozen food. My hubby and I grow about 80% of our food. I went to the supermarket the other day and spent $13. We go shopping about every few weeks and spend $15-20, but we buy all of our meat and poultry from local ranchers. We aren’t homesteading or preppers.
Remember, just because you aren’t living a certain way, doesn’t mean others aren’t. There are some issues with Doug and Stacy, but saying that certain things can’t be done isn’t realistic. Some people live in a tent on a street corner.

Being a “prepper” means one is prepared for any disaster natural or manmade as best they can be. Being self sufficient as much as possible is also “prepper”. It’s all about being self reliant as much as possible to reduce stress and far worse things. Having ways to wash clothes without need for the grid, canning food means you have food stored and don’t have to worry about the system running for groceries to get to stores, growing own food speaks for itself.
Anyone that pretends that being self reliant as much as possible is a waste of time will at some point have a painful awakening.

Couple years back I called out Doug because he claimed the work he was doing on Mom's house was a log cabin. I respectfully commented that those are wood panels over a conventionally framed building, far from an actual log cabin. They promptly deleted my comments and blocked me which is what I get for simply telling the truth.
I know alot of people who grow their food on raised beds and they actually get alot of vegetables from them. I planted a very small garden this past summer and I actually got tons and tons of vegetables and fruit from my very small garden.

You can't live off a tiny garden for a year, unless it's one person n you don't eat veggies everyday.
Some of these off griders claim to grow all their food in a very small garden space which is a lie. I am here to tell you that you need at the least one full acre or two of land to farm to grown enough food to last for some time and then you will still need money to buy some food and other items out of stores you can not produce on your own. Even back in the colonial days those people had to buy or bargain for things they needed.

I agree with you about Doug & Stacy but you made a mistake with Simple living Alaska. They live fulltime in Willow in that cabin, which to the lower 48 would be considered remote and they are technically off grid because they only have solar and generator power. They have mentioned how close they are to their neighbor many times but they are 45 minutes from the store. They have a "vacation" cabin that they visit occasionally that is very remote. It is always a big deal when they go there. They dont pretend to live there for more than a few days at time. And they are a very good example of how HARD it is to live off grid in Alaska. They work exceptionally hard and go into detail about storing food and processing all that food right there in that off grid cabin. Just wanted to clear that up.

The term "Homesteading" is not used as it was when my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother Homesteaded 160 acres and carved out a living and a life from basically nothing to a a prosperous life for themselves and children with faith in God and hard work. Today, it is living off-grid and they are starting with something more than most of the homesteaders back then started with. I admire anyone who wishes to have as their life goal now days to live off grid, homeadsteading, prepper, or what ever you want to call it. This country was founded on people who had a dream and continues to today. We have the right to succeed if we wish to even though there is always the chance of failure. We always must keep moving on through the good and bad. A faith in God helps, but with free will it is our choice.

With all due respect, we have less than our ancestors did. They had acres of fertile soil to do with whatever they want, so long as they occupied that land, rarely paid money for it, and if they did, it's basically nothing. Our soil is depleted, collecting rainwater is illegal, just about everything related to farming is regulated to the point it's illegal, and rent for a shoebox bedroom is more than anyone can afford, let alone actually having a home with any land.

When all of this was unfolding I felt like people were worrying way too much about what people were saying about them and not keeping their eye on the ball which is just worrying about what God wants and is it plain and simple. I don't watch D&S anymore because of the fake. I do have to say though, I was raised and we raised our children off grid in a 14' by 30' cabin, we had no running water in the house, an outhouse and outside shower with wood heat. We had a gas stove and woodstove and canned inside or out depending on the weather. We had animals to butcher, a large garden and still managed to raise our kids in a tiny space. It can and is possible. I like what you're doing but please don't say it's not possible, anything is possible, it's just how. We make what we have work for us.

Sadly, I can sense them in a heartbeat. If you can utilize their channel for off the grid/homestead information, then fantastic, use it just for that. But they are making plenty of money without the need to sell their books and events. I've been in a financial crisis since my family lost everything during the plandemic -- we are still struggling to get back on our feet. And there are many people like us out here. The last thing I want to do is run with the fear mongering to buy a $20 or $30 book with homesteading recipes when I can go online and access that and more. Twenty bucks to us it a lot of money, I will use it towards feeding all the animals we rescue and the meds we need to treat our special needs. No thank you!!!

So, when he would say certain things like " I am trying to help you guys...I am doing this for you...". The hairs on my neck stood up. Portraits himself as selfless...meanwhile MO is all about them. This Doug guy always gave me the creeps and not truthful in some of his claims. He certainly can’t keep his mouth shut and let his wife talk. I agree he strayed from posting about homesteading and went on a political raid preaching prejudice to the masses. Then he will turn it all around when people start fighting back in a “ I told you so moment” further promoting his hate agenda.
This is the kind of thing that destroys peace in our country by promoting “hate” and “fear”. I know I am not the only one who got the “creep vibe” from him. Sometimes people are EXACTLY as they appear.

Preppers and homesteaders are two different things .and that washing machine is not old I'm 62 and I know what an old fashioned washer is .Also they have a summer kitchen that they cook in the summer and use the wood cook stove in the winter. On top of that Doug bought the kit before he even had a sawmill you too are so out of touch with what it takes to live like people used to have to live .are you trying to say you have to have an electric oven to cook? Homesteaders don't leave their property so why would they need a bug out bag? I just happened on to this and it sounds like a couple people from town who don't know what reality is .And what about the woman in the car do you actually see her doing anything or your just believing her because she agreed with you. I see her complaining about them just like you two .You have proven nothing to me

I find it highly disturbing the number of people in this comments section that don't want to listen to another person's opinion. Clearly the majority of us are in the U.S. and it is so strange that we have moved away from hearing folks out. This is why the chasm is so deep and wide. This is why there is no hope for humanity. This is why we're doomed. Fighting amongst each other to hear ourselves talk and never listening. A constant battle of "one upping" each other. The fact that you took the time to make this video echoes my point. Actual preppers don't show their food/supply storage. Actual homesteaders don't take the time to film every aspect of their lives. Mostly because they're too busy working to keep things moving.

If I may share a bit more on this topic. Ones need to be very discerning concerning the homestead community, homestead channels, etc. and do some investigating work. I am 69, husband is 73 and we lived the life that is now called homesteading for 30 yrs. In our day, just as way back in the days, it was just a daily way of life. Some of these you have mentioned have a back ground of being on t.v. and in the eye of the public in a great way and as you mentioned, have lots of money in some capacity or another. They do bring those aspects to their channels. I agree with much of what you have presented on the ones here in this video. I do not watch much youtube anymore, this one just happened to show up. I have longed wondered if others would see some of the things I have seen and be distressed over them as well. A thought that should come to be part of the homestead ones are living is to have a plan for when you age. Most young people do not think of this, I remember thinking in my 20's or 30's 70 years of age was so far into the future, and in a blink I am here. ") Although we loved every day of our life on our farm and all it gave us, health of my husband brought that season of our lives to an end in the grand scale of what our farm was. I do have geese, chickens and rabbits and we do some small container gardening. I can not imagine not ever planting something, only if it is one tomato plant or cucumber. Sounds similar to our life as we are almost that age. Our parents and family have been "homesteading" all our lives. Our parents and Grandparents lived in sod houses and dugouts. It should give us great pleasure to provide for ourselves no matter the scale of our endeavors.

I am in my mid sixties and live on what I call an "urban homestead". I have chickens and I garden. I have a full time job that pays the bills and a side gig that I am trying to make more profitable so that I can retire my day job, but with the way things are, it's going to be a while. Anyway....your comment struck a chord with me. With each passing year it gets a little bit harder to take care of what little I do have. I suspect the chickens will be the first to go, and I will probably cut way back on my garden.....that will be the hardest thing to let go of. I can't imagine living one more day if I knew that I could never feel the soil between my fingers, or watch a sprout come up from the ground, and grow, and grow, and one day bear fruit. Gardening is my life's passion. My happy place. My sanctuary. If I can't garden, well then........

I'm almost 73. You are correct, for many of us older folks "homesteading" was a way of life. I have been off the farm for most of my life now. - But, I can live vicariously watching this kind of channel.
When my grandparents got older they moved to town letting some other farmers rent the homestead - the guy let his hogs run through the log cabin. Any way both grandpa and grandma continued to grow many things in the garden in town- they had made it through the Depression with home gardening and canning.
Many of my classmates inherited the farm making the homestead continue after 5 or 6 generations.
I got married in '72. My husband had only lived on the farm that had been passed on before Iowa was a state. My mother inlaw taught Homec is a farming community. The curriculum demanded that she teach "furniture styles." This tiny woman cried and cried in anguish because most of the girls would marry right after high school graduation. Then they would live in farmhouses with no plumbing and no electricity. She felt these girls needed to learn budging skills and canning in Home Ec. (Bad investments by other family members lost my husband's family farm. I raised our kids in the city.)
I know that I cannot take care of the garden anymore - I have plants. I have a disabled/ bedbound son who takes a lot of work - so I adapt. Again I love watching other folks with energy doing the work. I know what you are saying that most young people probably don't think ahead.

I will conclude that I believe that @HillsideHomesteading was making a similar point. The title caught people's eye - I personally may have tried to word it differently, but it was effective in starting a conversation about the fact that this lifestyle is harder work than it looks like. Hopefully, young folks don't burn their bridges without a backup plan to leave city life - that is my understanding that I really want to take from this video as controversial as ti seems with some folks feeling protective on one side or another.

I stopped watching homesteaders when they became political.
You don't see anything on their channel anymore cause if they give you stuff free they can't charge you an arm and leg for their university and "homestead" conference. Remember everything is money with them.

Hey, I have my own issues with Doug and Stacy. I gave up on them years ago.
I want to say this though, some of your points are a little off. "Nobody lives with a bucket as a toilet". Um, yeah, I have been for 5 years. Not because I want to, but when you are the only one doing 99% of the work things take a lot longer to get done than if you had help and skilled labor. I don't talk about it on my channel because most people wouldn't understand, and I'm not real proud of it. Another thing is I don't have running water, yet. It's been 5 years and I am FINALLY getting my pump house built so I can start putting the plumbing together (which I am very nervous about doing). I am NOT off grid, I have electricity. You do see me doing stuff on my channel, but my videos are not very good because I lost my ability to be able to edit. (Technology, it's a wonderful thing . . . , when it works. 🙄) I am a "prepper" of sorts, but I don't have a backpack because I am NOT leaving my home. I have "starvation food" put back because I have gone carnivore. You won't see a garden, but I have my freezer full of meat. It's been a rough 5 years for this old woman, but I think I'm starting to see a glimmer of a light at the end of the tunnel.
