- I freely admit that "Insanely Cool Drum Lick" is an incredibly cheesy title, but I do LOVE this block of notes so sometimes ya gotta play the game in order to get folks to click, lol. That being said, I truly hope you enjoy this new series and I hope you have a blast using this "block" all over the kit! - Mike J

Mike love this full! One thing I noticed is you bury your bass drum beater into you head on you second double, or if you just a four on floor grove you bury it into the head and choke out the drum. I was guilty of doing the same thing when was young and I’m 65 now. I was told by the great Buddy Rich how to break that habit just drop your heal after your stroke and your beater will come right off the head about a inch or so. His reason for telling me this is I got to see him 20+ Times and got watch him from on the High Hat side and noticed him not burying the beater. He told me the reason for not to do it because, when you are playing your other drums your not burying your stick into the head with the exception for Special effect. This advice opened my whole career as a drummer. But I will admit it was a hard habit to break. It took me about six months to do it, since I was doing it since I started play at 6 years old and he told this information when I was 16. Happy Drumming! 👍👏😀
and yes, I'm fully aware that I took off like a bat out of hell at 3:45 and then had to immediately drop about 15 bpm, LOL. I'm gonna blame the matcha for that one 🤣🤣🤣
All I can Say Is YES🥁🔥🥁🔥🥁🔥🥁🔥🥁🔥🥁
Thanks Mike, that snare though 💥
RIGHT??? That thing just sings for days!
This is literally what ive been doing the past two days and you post the exact same block. Tis the season
Your a ledge bro, thanks for all the inspiration.
I especially love the marshmallow snacks saved for afterwards in your toms!!
Beautiful drum kit sounds amazing!!
Vary helpful lessons thank you mike your the man !!!
Love this new concept! Looking forward to digging in!
One of the Goats of today. Mike your truly one in a million hope to meet you one day and shake your hand
Topada mornin' my friend. I can't wait to get home from work and try this out. I often get discouraged playing drums, because I end up playing the same stuff. Watching your videos always gets me to try different stuff and challenges me. You're the man, Mike. Thanks for all the videos over the years. I appreciate it man!!
Slowing it down with the written notation below is extremely helpful. Love what you said about the brain needing to "Learn". I like to talk about the cerebrum vs the cerebellum. Use your cerebrum to program your cerebellum so you can take advantage of the autonomous, balance, coordination that the cerebellum provides. Once the cerebellum is programmed, you can use the like and let the program play out.
Always a great lesson. Digging the snare and USA Customs together.
Keith and his Snare are goated
This block is one of my fav. 8 note groupings! Great Video Mike
Never been this early to a video of yours before. But over the past weeks I’ve been binge watching your stuff and have picked up so many things. Just wanted to say thank you.
Wow Eli, that really means a lot to me. Thanks so much for watching. I'm truly glad that you are enjoying everything.
There is that cool jacket again! :) Amazing lick bro! Trying it out NOW!
Love hearing you with the Kit tuned like this again. Loved the old sound too, but this feels like Mike Johnston home for me 💙
A new shot idea/perspective = greeting us as you get out of your car at the studio ✔️🖤 (need that cap 🧢 and bomber look…and Lee lol) 😎
The best online educator out there 🔥
Mike, inspiring how you're always innovating/improving in everything you do- whether it be your teaching methodologies or your drum studio's look/feel (love the way the white shells make the yellows of those cymbals and snares pop 👌).
Also, that china seems like too much fun! Encouraging me to grab one for my kit.
The best on the internet ! really great educator ! You make all these things clear. Thanks Mike
You are not just a great drummer, you are a great D-instructor as well. Thank you,Mike!!!
I truly appreciate that Vitaly. Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching :)
Tasty! Thanks, Mr. J!
Might as well go ahead and drop the link for the bomber jacket in the description 😂….great content as usual Mike 🙌🏼
You’ve Helped me so much this year and your online course..ugh thank you🙏🏻
Thank you so much Mike for being a concise and thoughtful teacher. 😊
I only wish I had stumbled on your channel long ago but now is as good a time as any 😂
I’m a big fan of these parts of 16th notes . Accenting the middle of a group of 16th notes (the E and & )and then the outside ( the 1 and Uh). This will be a nice addition !
Another splash of Mike's hot sauce 👍
Love it Mike !
Cool! 🔥🥁🎵 Thanks!! 😁🤘
Awesome! Thanks, Mike!
So good!
This is amazing! Mike you do you. Your playing and kit is incredible. If you ever feel inspired, I think people with Gretsch energy kits and HCS cymbals feel less than because of the “cheap” nature of their gear. But I know you on an Energy or a Blackhawk and HCS is still going to rock because the human, tuning, the feel, and the playing make way more impact on the sound and tone (and tuning) than anything else?
I found this video very inspiring! Everything about it is First Class! Especially your playing Mike. Thank you🫡✅
Love the title
What is that China!!!! I love it
Sounds awesome!!
Hello Mike, I really like this Blocks! What about the Blocks Pt. 2 Video? Unfortunately it is no longer online...
Thanks for sharing Mike always a pleasure to watch you 😊..
See a lot of cotton balls in your Toms. Are there any left in the Store I wonder 😅...greetings from an old dutch blues drummer.
hello can u tell me the name of every cymbal u use ? i really like them. I d be happy if u do this
Drum camp was one of the most memorable times in my life. Awesome teacher.
holy..wath a nice one! love it❤
nice! keep up Mike! By the way when the practice pad will be launced?
I love Blocks and have been following them on Insta until now, so it's great to have a UA-cam lesson in a little more depth. Thank you! I see that someone has already commented on the essential drumming accessory inside your mounted tom. I have been using this technique in my floor tom for a while now but hadn't thought of doing the same in my other toms - is this new for you?
Awe Craig, thanks so much man. That really means a lot. As far as the cotton balls... I think we were all doing it back in the 80's as kids because we couldn't afford the Remo internal mufflers, LOL. I started doing it again about 5-6 years ago, you just never see it because I always use coated heads. Hope that helps :)
Great
✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️ thank you!!!!
Dear Mike, what snare are you using? It's very nice!
What Gretsch snare is this?
Whoa. When did you get endorsed by Rudimental Matcha? I love that stuff, although unlike with you, it doesn’t seem to be increasing my tempos. Guess I gotta drink (much) less and practice (still) more. 😅
That kit sounds fat!! I love it
Mate these USA customs are insanely versatile 😮
Also, is that the jacket you mentioned in the podcast? (shut up and take my money. Where can we buy it?!)
LOL, yes it is. It’s like $35.00 😂😂😂 That’s why I turned down the endorsement/sponsorship. I bought 3, should last me until 2030, LOL.
Hey great vid Mike! What hat are you wearing and where can we buy it?
That's a beautiful looking watch! Are you an avid watch collector as well?
I am indeed. “Collector” sounds a a lot better than the real word that I would use… addict. LOL 😂
@@mikeslessons 🤣 I would love it if you do a sneak peek or a short video of your watch collection.
Mike, can your patitur be categorized as a variation of paradidol? please give me an answer? if your answer is yes!..it's a variation of paradidol. So my only weakness so far is the kick double bass drum😢😭
What is the watch you're wearing in this video? BTW, cool lesson :)
I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the lesson. The watch in this video is a Tudor Black Bay Chrono.
@@mikeslessons oh, just as I thought. I love Tudor watches as well as your lessons :)
I wont say what other drummer posted this lick, but I totally stole it then and can say its one of my favorites to use!
You can also play it in 16th note triplets with a small variation. RllkkRLKK RllkkRLKK RllKRL 😊
So a 9 9 6 triplet fill 🤘🏻
🎉🎉🎉
hello mike, what metronome you use on ipad ?
Why doesn't mine sound like that? Oh right, the snare. 😂 SWEET fill idea and I can vouch for Sessions, they're a watershed for drum education. Much gratitude, Mike!
Why does it appear you have marshmallows in your mounted tom?
Because you never know when a surprise s’more party might break out and I want to be READY! :)
But my kick..🤔 at that speed..
Dear
It’s just ok fine But how the hell to kick drum that fast?
Sounds like fun and a great way to lose the gig!!
Unless it's fusion. If that's the case then you're gonna need to bring a lot more heat than this simple lick, lol.
You are right about that!
