You could definitely do what Chuck Cassidy does for schoolies but for box trucks. He has a pay by the hour kind of deal over the phone I think. Helping people get their layout or help them with troubleshooting solar systems
Excellent video after over forty years as a mechanic I cannot wait to get out of that increasingly noisy smelly garage and see the sites in this continent
At your age, one looks at life through rosed colored glasses and the mindset is always positive, good for you. I did as you for eight years but one day I realized that I had to come home from my Disneyland world. I had become more and more isolated as time went on. Yes, I saved money, who does not want to do that but at what cost? Minimalism feels great at the beginning, and you may brag about it now but later it became monotonous and quite boring for me. Good luck to you.
Finally, someone shows a pass thru. I am 64 and taking care of my 95 year old Mom. When her time is up I would like to hit the road for awhile. My main concern as a woman is safety and having a pass thru is number one for me. Let be your idea on retirement also.
This truck is perfect for a couple of single. We full-time in a 40 ft Class A with a Jeep, however we have a massive 2400 watt, 1000 amp hour solar setup.
Brad, great informative video. As a guy in his 70s who prepares 150 tax returns a year, my suggestion is to buy a rental house in a locale you enjoy. Rent will mostly cover mortgage payments and you will own it outright in 30 years. In the meantime, it offers flexibility for marriage, family, handicapping injury, etc.
Great video! I'm retired. Retirement for me is wonderful. Everyday I do what I want to do. It's really the new beginning to a life, in my opinion. One thing people don't realize is that health issues really do absolutely happen as you get older, so having a retirement money account and being able to afford health insurance is extremely important. But if you enjoy your daily work, then there is no need to retire unless you get ill, or just want to have a change in life. But the human body does age, and gets worn down, so if one does manual labor of some type, it might not be possible to continue working later in life.
Well said brother! As usual great informative video! Some day I'm gonna jump into box truck life for sure! And you are my go to for ideas on setting up my box platform! You are a true professional sir! Thanks very much Mr. Nomad! 👍
I love your setup and your explanation of what it's like living in a vehicle A lot of people don't realize that it's just a very simple and happy life not slaving away for rent and stressing over bills
Hey Brad, just found your channel and enjoyed seeing your unit. Love the sleek minimalist look in side. We retired at 50 debt free and love that we can still venture out through the year (coming 70). I still have a couple online businesses so it doesn’t matter where we are. Life is too short to be stressed or in debt. Congratulations on choosing your lifestyle. Cheers
Cool home! From Canada I'd like to add to the "what about retirement question" - so I'm in mid 50s. Been working a decent municipal job for the past 25 plus years. Wage was "ok", I'm considered Middle Income and have a pension. I've spent my life in the environmental industry and have been a big proponent of tiny homes, less consumerism etc.. I followed the normal path...went to college, got a good job that I enjoy, married (but divorced and starting over again at 55). No sticks n brick home, most of our money was invested in the house, so we sold it and she got 40% for support and I paid off all our debts...so my retirement now is basically vanlife...My pension is not enough to pay the $3000 a month in rent here in Vancouver...so my choices are made for me. My new partner lost everything in the crash of 2008 when she was with oil n gas in Alberta Canada...At least I make enough now I can start building that Van or saving up for the 4 season RV...
This video is personal confirmation for my Van Life Journey and Experience. Your video and presentation from start to finish is encouraging and the best I have seen yet. Thank you for posting truth and being evidence for “society” to see that Van Life the best way to live abundantly! I’ll see you on the road.
Just bought an 82' E350 getting ready to convert it, your build is the best I have seen for my needs! I plan to replicate you and appreciate your content greatly.
I've done it for over 25 years. Wouldn't have it any other way. Even when I was working at Judge Judy and MADtv I lived in my 4Runner, working nights and surfing every day.
Love your van! The door between the cab and living space is an awesome idea. I think a shower would be a good idea as I shower daily. Beautiful setup otherwise!!!
It’s a great layout and design it allows you to travel your career allows you to work anywhere your knowledge of solar technology compliments your lifestyle well done friend
Retirement isn't just about getting to the finish line. I can tell you, once you get older, you want a peaceful and comfortable place. You're a young man, but when you hit 60+, you may change your mind about living on the road. Believe me, physically, it gets harder and harder, just bending over and getting on your knees on the ground isn't easy.
I’m 66 my wife is 70 we’re in a Promaster in Colombia with our dog touring South America. We aren’t athletes either; trust me. We have union pensions and social security and are doing fine.
I also live in a van, I got rid of the kitchen sinks, gray water and black water tanks. Now I use unscented baby wipes to clean all my dishes or you can use scented baby wipes for more flavor. lol. No water tanks to fill up or empty. Throwing out the kitchen sinks gave me so much more room for other things. And less weight because I am not carrying around a hundred gallons of water. What a difference, saves so much time. I have been doing it this way for eight years and I love the van life.
Great summary at the end. Also love your 2 points: only going home to your house in the evenings to sleep; and not buying "stuff" as part of your daily life experience.
You’re doing it right my friend. Running your own business solo is the biggest key to your freedom. Van build is well thought out, clean and minimalistic as well. The mini split is a game changer. Much to be proud of here.
Just be sure to save for old age. Although some people can continue to work well into their 70s and 80s, a lot of people get to a point where they can no longer work. It could be for failing physical or mental health, or lower energy, or diminished memory, or diminished ability to keep up with new tech and developments. I just retired at the age of 68 because I was starting to struggle to do things that I had been able to do before. You will NEVER regret saving money for old age.
I beg to differ. I retired at 62 and took the 25% hit because I knew that still being young enough to hike and ride my mountain bike would mean f-a-r more to me longer term than that bit of extra money ever would. Here we are -- 8-1/2 years later -- with absolutely no regrets! The most common lament we hear out here in the real world is, "Why didn't we do this 5 or even 10 years ago?" You need *some* money for fuel and food and repairs but beyond that? Being FREE will sustain you f-a-r longer and in greater health than any amount of the lean green mean ever will.
Wow Brad, great channel! I have a feeling you're gonna light the fire (so to speak) beneath others living similar lifestyles ie "happy houses/fancy cars/major debt/stuck" to make the change(s) they've been fantasizing about for far too long! Safe travels, Pam
This is a beautiful built. You are mechanically inclined and a natural as an internet personality. If ever I realize my dream of van life, I know who to call for my solar!!
Brad, good luck to you. I think you are spot on. I have always lived below my needs. My wife & I have a modest home, watch our utility bills, house paid for, drive older vehicles which are paid for, and are happy enjoying our home and beautiful garden. We don’t need the BMW and save money going out to breakfast rather than a dinner house. I don’t need to impress people with fancy formal wear, the jeans, and wall mart or Costco clothing is fine with me. The wife is finally staying out of the shopping malls. I only buy things as needed. We are starting to unclutter the house and amazes me how many shirts or shoes I never use. We donate our older shoes and the unused clothing is donated to veterans. You get a tax deduction and feel good helping our veterans. We are saving our money and try to get a good return which is insured by FTIC. We are empty nesters and the son is on his own. If our grand daughter turns out to be a good student, we hope we can assist in her education. If she turns out to be a poor student, we are not wasting the money. We will see. We dislike the freebies and like to take care of ourselves. I like people who take charge, and earn their keep as opposed to entitlement and welfare care. Yes, it’s needed for some but wasn’t meant for long term for most people. So, my best and wish you much happiness. I was on a treadmill for many years. I remember going to work 9-5pm, college classes from 7-9pm , with both of us working. It was hard but I loved my work but the social life was void. Semi retired commercial realtor here, wife retired from Pacific Bell. Early to bed, church on Sundays , and very few vacations. With 50 years together so far. High school sweet hearts. LOL.
Impressive! I’ve been car camping since November 5, 2020 almost 4 years now. I rent my old house out and am completely retired with a military pension and free medical and dental care in every state as a veteran. I do this as my bucket list while I’m still young enough to do this. Your story is amazing and I hope it inspires others to live out on the road and really enjoy their lives more fully. 👍🇺🇸
Due to family responsibilities, van life was not an option for me but I came of age in a time when buying a home didn't cost an arm and a leg. Kudos to you for living your dream.

Nice van! I retired at 52, got bored out of my head, got another job, that was 15 years ago, I don't see myself ever retiring again. I just like to work and I walk to work so no commuting in traffic. I recently went to three days a week, after four days off it feels good to go back because I'm easily bored.
Just the fact that when you pull up to a job site you have your whole house with you is awesome. The only thing that makes me worry about doing it is my two kids lol
Here’s another idea for income. Do solar installs on homes. I did mine myself for well under $10k. That’s including paying for some of the labor. Estimates for a turn key install on my home were around $50k. You could charge half that amount and still make a decent profit. The only mistake I made on my install was not getting enough panels. I didn’t realize that you only get 4-6 hours of usable sun and you get lots of cloudy days. My bill is still zero a few months a year.
I lived in a minivan for most of 10 years. I traveled a lot and spent winters in the Phoenix area and one winter in Southern California. I spent 2 springs and summers in Boulder , Colorado. I worked 2 summers at the Grand Canyon and I worked temp jobs, day labor, restaurants. I was a professional sign waver on the side of streets. My van had room for clothes, sleeping bags, food, etc. I could stretch out and sleep well, protected from wind, rain and insects. I locked my doors at night and parked near apartments, motels or hotels. I did not park in front of private homes at night because they'll call the police. If you live in a vehicle get your windows tinted extra dark so people can't see inside. I ate free food at St. Vincent free food kitchen and the Salvation Army in Prescott, Arizona. For 1.5 years I had a 24 hour fitness membership to use their showers. Although I was homeless, I had plenty of money saved and my clothes were relatively clean. Nobody knew I was Homeless !
Working a job you don't like to pay for a house your never at because your at work was exactly the life that made the truck life an easy choice for me. No rent, no house mates and no drama. I like your comment about retirement and holidays, once your living the life you want, you dont need those things anymore, actually there are a lot of things you discover you don't need anymore when you have the freedom to think. Probably why those pulling the strings of our system put so much pressure on us so we don't have time to do that, can't have to many ppl realising they would rather free time over money now can we :)
I believe this, no matter where you are... you're home and everyday is brand new. I have had people tell me that rv living was stupid, another said I didn't have the "skill set " but I have not given up my dream. Your channel is inspiring me to do it with no apologies. Thank you.

Retirement. Well said sir. I am 70 years old retired at 59. Before i retired, i made sure my car was paid off and have a credit card but ( i cant remember when i used it last), i also payed my house off. I also raised 2 sons on my own. How did i do it? Living a frugal life. I did a lot of DIY, lowered my expectations of many things. I changed my mindset. I recently sold my house in California and moved to TN. I bought my house here with the proceeds of cali house. I know it is tough out there, but it was tough when i was young too. Now, i am comfortable and still saving $$$$. This home will be improved so i leave a legacy to my sons. Lastly, don’t wait for others to bail you out of tough times and definitely don’t wait for the US to get its shit together. God bless.🎉
We do the same exact job. Except, I install medical equipments for the hospital that lease / purchased from the company I work for. Meals and Gas are paid for by the company - most of the time.
Great philosophy regarding experiences vs. stuff! Great tips, and great looking gear: flex stack pack, kitchen sink system. Thanks! Buying real estate rental property can be a good option for investment. If you bought a large enough property you could create a place to park your van on the property and include that as a stipulation in the rental lease, this way you always have a "home base" to park at / work on your van.
thats a great idea, I am planning a situation excatly like that in the future. have the tenants pay down the mortgage while I have a shop in the back thats mine
Holy crap that's actually a really good toilet. I was going to say some people use composting toilets and you could use a square bucket to store it in nooks conveniently but that one actually looks pretty user friendly. I mean now that I think about it you can pretty much pee in a gallon container put a lid on it and go poop in cheap disposable bags and tie them up like a dog poop bag... I think RV toilets are one of the most over-engineered things where they try to replicate an actual flushing toilet and it fills up that septic tank like like crazy. I lived in an RV for about a year once and had to dump the septic about once a week and a whole process was a nightmare and a waste of space. Luckily I was parked right over a septic tank so I could just open it and empty the tank every time.
you make it sound so glamorous. The disposal of our own poo, trying to find water, dealing with no address, dealing with no sound control, increased vehicle insurance, road towing. there are many hidden thing that you have to pay for that are not obvious until you go full time. I did it for 6 years and found a inexpensive place to live. at first glance it looks a lot cheaper but in the long run I found that it saved about 40% if you don't stay in RV parks.
Your thoughts on retirement is exactly on point with my thoughts. Also Your needed income comes down to how bad you screwed yourself in bills, looking at my coworker with a $50,000 pickup truck with a $700 monthly truck payment.
Hi Brad, awesome video!! Although I am a homeowner, I totally agree with your outlook and perspective, especially on living life now how most people want to live in their retirement and just needing less and still be happy.

$12k is good! I'm just amazed that the older vehicles still run well. Perfect vehicle you've chosen and fabulous layout. I thought you were short so it def is a good size, when you said you were 5'10" I was really surprised. Definite advantage if you are a handy type, I don't understand any of the electronic connections etc....I wouldn't even know how to maintain as a senior female. I love everything about this conversion but it's always that bathroom/shower thing....I'd be emptying the toilet constantly and showers are just so refreshing.... Set up a 32" or larger LCD with a Chromecast or Fire TV stick. Then control it with an old phone and a hiking/camping, nature view, fish tank etc playlist.
It'll make a HUGE difference to your mental health.
@@edwardfletcher7790 -- Or just get out there in the real world and actually see and do those things! At least 100 times better!
You could definitely do what Chuck Cassidy does for schoolies but for box trucks. He has a pay by the hour kind of deal over the phone I think. Helping people get their layout or help them with troubleshooting solar systems
I would love to do that!
Bravo Brother! keep living and loving and spreading kindness as you do.
Thanks! I appreciate you brian!
One of the most well thought out and well executed van conversions I've seen. Bookmarked for future reference. Great job, thanks for the video!
thank you so much for the kind words !
What a fantastic video! ❤
Thank you Nichole! I hope you’re enjoying Washington 😊
Excellent video after over forty years as a mechanic I cannot wait to get out of that increasingly noisy smelly garage and see the sites in this continent
I can’t wait for you to get out!
By then youre body is not as able..i traveled in my 30s to 40s. expat 2 xs, million air miles. glad i did it then, young able and it was fun.
I worked in my 20's 30's 40's Now my knees are shot. Hard to stay healthy. Your point is taken. I think sometimes I did it backwards
This is a brilliant idea and it is like a little apartment if the neighbors bother you move away, very nice.
thats exactly the point 😎
At your age, one looks at life through rosed colored glasses and the mindset is always positive, good for you. I did as you for eight years but one day I realized that I had to come home from my Disneyland world. I had become more and more isolated as time went on. Yes, I saved money, who does not want to do that but at what cost? Minimalism feels great at the beginning, and you may brag about it now but later it became monotonous and quite boring for me. Good luck to you.
thanks manny! im keeping the dream alive
Finally, someone shows a pass thru. I am 64 and taking care of my 95 year old Mom. When her time is up I would like to hit the road for awhile. My main concern as a woman is safety and having a pass thru is number one for me. Let be your idea on retirement also.
I look forward to seeing you on the road!
G’day from Australia Brad, very admirable how you’ve combined your profession into your home, that is quite something. Keep on living a good life mate
Thank you so much! I’m loving the home/work setup
That van is one of the nicest I've ever seen, well done.
Thank you so much! That means a lot. This was hard work 😅
This truck is perfect for a couple of single. We full-time in a 40 ft Class A with a Jeep, however we have a massive 2400 watt, 1000 amp hour solar setup.
I agree with you, nice setup 😎
You’re my dream man!! So organized…..and cute! Love your home!!
Thanks so much!!
Brad, great informative video. As a guy in his 70s who prepares 150 tax returns a year, my suggestion is to buy a rental house in a locale you enjoy. Rent will mostly cover mortgage payments and you will own it outright in 30 years. In the meantime, it offers flexibility for marriage, family, handicapping injury, etc.
thats great advice and something i am planning on doing
I did a kitchen remodel last year & put in the same sink. I love it!
It’s been a great sink!
I agree with you
Well said brother! As usual great informative video! Some day I'm gonna jump into box truck life for sure! And you are my go to for ideas on setting up my box platform! You are a true professional sir! Thanks very much Mr. Nomad! 👍
I appreciate that! I look forward to seeing you on the road 😁
Cheers
Thank you so much! Congratulations on landing some location independent income 😊

Is there a more budget friendly inverter you recommend for a 1200w max system? Not planning on using shore power.
Excellent video. It covered a lot and made van life make more sense. Good job.
Glad it was helpful!
I've done it for over 25 years. Wouldn't have it any other way. Even when I was working at Judge Judy and MADtv I lived in my 4Runner, working nights and surfing every day.
wow, you have been at it for a long time! im happy to hear you loved it so much
You've done good Brad, real good.

Very true!
I hear ya, my dad is 76, still travels in a 40' Class C RV. hoping to follow his path
You don't have to travel. Live in the van in the city.
Sounds like a good plan
Enjoyed this. Love your life attitude.
Thank you! I appreciate that
Great summary at the end. Also love your 2 points: only going home to your house in the evenings to sleep; and not buying "stuff" as part of your daily life experience.
absolutely! it's a totally different state of mind
It's nice to hear your story. I do love how well you designed your truck. It's pretty. ❤

You’re doing it right my friend. Running your own business solo is the biggest key to your freedom. Van build is well thought out, clean and minimalistic as well. The mini split is a game changer. Much to be proud of here.
Thank you! I’m very proud of my accomplishments 😎
You will NEVER regret saving money for old age.
old age comes for all of us!
@@JIMPETERSON-n7i my thoughts exactly!

One additional point, make sure you pay enough self-employment tax to insure you Social Security benefits.

LOL.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I’m happy to hear that you have figured out the secret to a fulfilling life 😎
thank you so much! im happy to hear that you are on a similar path 🙏🏻
Due to family responsibilities, van life was not an option for me but I came of age in a time when buying a home didn't cost an arm and a leg. Kudos to you for living your dream.

Preach it, brother! Retirement is a change in career, but it does not need to earn income. Everyone has to be busy doing something they enjoy.
You’re absolutely right!
Is amazing, brother. You are one of the biggest VanLife references for our way to deal with the type of this new lifestyle
Big hugs from an Nomad Italian from Brazil
Nice van! I retired at 52, got bored out of my head, got another job, that was 15 years ago, I don't see myself ever retiring again. I just like to work and I walk to work so no commuting in traffic. I recently went to three days a week, after four days off it feels good to go back because I'm easily bored.
thats a great schedule! im glad you enjoy work, thats the key to slowing down aging
Just the fact that when you pull up to a job site you have your whole house with you is awesome. The only thing that makes me worry about doing it is my two kids lol
Its the best feature!
My bill is still zero a few months a year.
great idea
Looking forward to following Brad wherever he goes.
I appreciate that 😎

Nobody knew I was Homeless !
very nice, you were doing it right!
I love how organized you are .. well done
Thank you! 😊
You're 100% correct. happy to hear that you figured it out
I believe this, no matter where you are... you're home and everyday is brand new.

God bless.🎉
happy to hear that. TN is a much better place for freedom
This video has real depth, and is quite insightful on so many levels. I am so glad I watched it.

We do the same exact job. Except, I install medical equipments for the hospital that lease / purchased from the company I work for. Meals and Gas are paid for by the company - most of the time.
nice, that sounds like a great gig!
This one is awesome

you make it sound so glamorous.

I already know that I would have no trouble whatsoever with minimal belongings.
....and parking it.....appears that vans are not welcome in many places..
All in all though, I love this layout and your attitude is great however I wonder how it's doable in a family arrangement.
