@MrNorris, I'd be surprised if sailors think that way, it will make everyone more cautious, may have actually saved lives. More people come to grief driving to work, try cancelling going to work to respect the dead. They're not forced into this race, a lot of sports are risky, life's risky.
They are designed with the boom as close to the deck as possible to maximize the sail area. Just because they have always done it that way doesn't make it right; it just is what it is. The designers need to address this.

You may search you tube for the tragic loss of a husband and wife BOTH Killed by a runaway boom in Violent seas and wind. Their two crew members WERE NEARLY KILLED salvaging the situtation. Should the 2 crew SUE the Estate of the DEAD Couple for Emotional Trauma ?. The Dead couple were extremely wealthy. PAID $2Million to have their motor sail yatch built and yet had less sailing experience than the two crew members. The vessels Boom had a built in restraint and the Mast had a power to operate the sail. Neither effective against 23' swells and 50 m.p.h. winds. Law suit. Absolute assinine remark on your part.
Why not hire some of those Chinese to write a computer game for a yacht race? Then they could play that game every Christmas just like normal kids and no one would get drowned.
Adventures always have risk, actually walking across a road or going anywhere carries risk and more people pass away in motor vehicle accidents each year. you may as well not live at all if you stay inside and avoid everything that is dangerous

So many factors as the sea and wind becomes violent, sea spray and water on deck, fighting to maintain footing and secure the main sail and boom. Imagine the force from an aluminium boom 10 to 20 feet long swinging into ones head. Having been hit and likely knocked out, it's highly probable the Gentleman passed feeling no pain and not conscious.
So a repetitve killer that needs invention. Problem .Boom Security . Solutions ; Stronger connections . Duplicated system for redundancy. ??? A line stoored at the end of the boom with a drogue chute that would deploy under centrifugal force ? Tip of the boom or near it clearly provides best leverage point . Synchronised front ( mast foot ) and rear winch points attached to boom end. Stupid right ? Come up with a better idea . Patent it. You're welcome.
Yes it’s unfortunate, but every sailor knows how dangerous a loose boom can be.
Maybe if yr working near or around the boom , some kind of headgear / helmet might be needed at night at least .
