But how are make-up wipes bad for u and ur any more than make-up is... Think about how much chemicals make up ect has... I would approach ur point more in a different way of them being unnecessary otherwise mby.
@tarynmaria_ Thank you for helping me brainstorm what I can get rid of and think through why I can do without it. I want my bedroom to just be a bed, a nightstand and a book or two. But can never seem to whittle it down
You have never lived in the rice fields of Northern California. Where when you walk out at night and are covered in mosquitos so thick you can't see your skin. We had to take the catcher off the bottom of the 3 zappers we had because the zappers would get too full in a single night. Oh yeah, the Guinny hens loved their morning buffet every morning of summer. Mosquito zappers work, and I used to have one inside my house for fruit flies that did an amazing job too. You will never convince me that they don't work. I have used ultrasonic pest repellents to clear a farmhouse that had over 25 mice having a party every single night. Then when I left the farm I moved into a place with roaches, and I set them up in there and the roaches were gone in a day or two time. I also found that I had a lot fewer black widow spiders in my house and my bathroom! So important since I was bitten 3 times by one a few years before while sleeping. It had gotten between my sheets. I will say though that you do have to change them out every 6 months. They do stop working over time. I have also found that switching brands every six months seems to help a lot too. Just saying
My husband passed peacefully a year ago and six months later I moved 600 miles to be closer to my daughter and her family. I had to downsize by ⅔ to fit into my new small farmhouse. I kept the heirloom dating back to the late 1800’s sterling silver and crystal. Kept the solid white Corelle dishes I used for twenty years during my child rearing days. Kept several accent pieces of my extensive sets of Lenox China various multi holiday pieces and a few precious pieces from my travels. I can’t begin to tell you the joy my family and random company have experienced when a few of these ‘treasures’ show up on the table and create a conversation and dredge up long forgotten memories about family traditions or stories of other company have triggered by these few pieces. It has been a win/win for me. Less clutter, less stress as my house has limited storage and the stories and conversations are a game changer for my entertaining.
I agree with no need for holiday dishes. However, my daughter inherited my mom's (her grandmother's) Waechterbach dishes and used them on Christmas Eve. It was fun to remember my mom and how much she loved those dishes. I was really happy my daughter got the dishes and was using them. Sometimes sentimentality is more important than the need to declutter.
My MIL has 450 plates, 350 bowls, and 250 teacups, with Christmas settings for 25 people. I don't even KNOW 25 people. (I counted, but still keep finding more!)
I purchased a collection of Winterberry dinnerware…I love it so much that I’m giving my heavy fiesta ware away and using it all year. It’s going to be just me and husband after our grandson leaves for the Navy in June…and I won’t have to worry about him breaking it..
I use cash as much as possible. I have a giant crayon bank that I put my change into at the end of the day, then I use the funds for my cat's birthday party.
Good luck and I hope you can find a pro to help you. It's the only way I'm afraid to tell ya nothing will get through to them any other way. They must come out of the darkness and get right with themselves first. That will help. It's unfortunately a way of life for so many. Many prayers😊
@kima260 it is for me as well. Just absolutely 💯 nope! I need to be mentally stable and not stressed with piles of trash ect. No more TOXIC PEOPLE! They can wallow in their own trash. I've moved on!
I don’t sneak or my husband, he slowly waking up, but…..even if he buys a replacement, i do a rebounder i do , but, now I don't do it long, enough, its starting to be unconfortable. candles is there anything i can do with them, my husband doesn't throughout, hmmm. thanks for tips your right for many, but,no one wants our clutter, that's the real truth 😑🙃🤔
For souvenirs we started only picking up one thing that can be converted to a Christmas tree decoration. It’s fun to remember the times we had as we hang them each year and it’s not everyday clutter.
I love my elegant coffee table in my living room! I keep a gorgeous tray on it with a couple coasters and my 2 remotes. That table comes in handy every day because we use our living room often!
Us too! We have a shelf under the table top that we use to put our large Scrabble game (it rotates) and reference books; i.e. dictionaries (yes multiples) and other types of reference books. And, we use it all. Without our coffee table I have no idea where we would put those things that would be handy. The top of the coffee table we use for, you guessed it, coffee and tea - with coasters; hahaha. We love it.
@@desiderata333 We have three seating areas/gathering rooms in our home. The family room coffee table is mostly used by my grandchildren as a place to draw, color, or do Lego projects. The one in the den is used for coffee! My husband and I have our morning coffee in there every day, and we also use that room when we have people over. We have a formal living room that we barely use. That coffee table never gets cluttered, though.
I agree with you Taryn!! Except one thing…Christmas Dishes!! I bought a whole set off of Facebook Marketplace last year…glasses, plates, serving ware, even candlesticks!! I have wanted the my entire adult life…they bring me so much JOY!! We use them starting November first on!!🥰
We pull our Christmas pfalztgraff out after Thanksgiving and, honestly, I don't stress about it getting put back away in the bottom of our small china cabinet until end of January. I live in a hot climate and anything that gives me the illusion of a real seasonal change is welcomed.
@lisahurst4208 ah, but don't fret. You are observing the true Christmas season. 4 Sundays of Advent leading up to Christmas Day Dec 25th, followed by the 12 days leading to Epiphany of the Magi (Jan 6, Three Kings) / 40 days leading to the Presentation of the Christ Child in the Temple (Feb 2, Candlemas)
I spent yesterday and today taking down my Christmas decor. I bought all new matching bins last fall. I re organized my entire attic today. I even bought new Brush Nickle light plate switches and outlet covers. I just did that to my entire home. What a difference they make. Tonight, I had taken everything out of my pantry. Checked the dates, re organized all the food. Made a snack bag for my husband to take to work on Monday. I am on a roll. Next deep cleaning my home, starting to wash the windows. Getting ready for my Spring yard sale.
I love my coffee table. I live alone with no dining table. The living room is my center of entertainment. Food served from kitchen, work space and the center of games and puzzles.
You don't need a big filing cabinet, but a one or two drawer is nice. Another paper item my grandfather told me about as a teen- keep all paper receipts of unusual bills paid, like speeding tickets, receipt for turning in licenses plates, cancelation confirmation numbers... this has saved my butt more than once. Just because they have a computer and gave you a receipt doesn't mean they have their records straight (or they intentionally botch their own records). Twice I've been come after years later with hundreds and hundreds of dollars in penalty fees. Glad I kept those receipts. Purge them when you purge your taxes. I organize folders by the year. Makes purging quick and easy.
I tend to agree. Where do people keep their insurance papers and other paper for tax purposes? We have a small filing cabinet in my husband's office and we go through it every New Year's Day and shred unnecessary papers. We keep the really important papers in a fireproof safe (birth certificates, marriage license, etc) with hard copies in our emergency "go bags" with digital backups on Dropbox. I also think locally-sourced beeswax candles with cotton wicks are fine.
We have one due to having a business. My husband is a mechanic so we use it for customers and their vehicles, any warranties that might come on parts and also to keep track of what we have done on their cars so when they come back we know what has been done and also helps with taxes. We are not computer users much. He had backed up some things on the computer, but when we want info we go to the files instead of turning on the computer and having to deal with that. He is much better with computers than I am. He doesn’t mind but if I’m helping I prefer paper. Also computers can crash, we also know fires can happen so it is good to have digital back up as well as paper. Trying to cover all bases.
I have cats and dogs. I need those 'odor eating candles' or my home smells. No, the place doesn't stink because I clean, but sometimes you know the cat just left a present......eww.
Your beeswax candles are the safest candle to burn and last longer than any other type candle. They're actually healthy for us and remove odors as well! 👍
I use my Christmas China the whole month of December. I switch out my regular dishes and totally enjoy my Christmas dishes. If you would only use it one day it is a waste but enjoy it the whole month.
What a wonderful idea! I never thought of using Christmas dishes for a whole month! I never purchased them so because I could never justify the storage space for them. And I know there are really cheap sets available.
Great suggestions! Concerning souvenirs, I no longer buy tee shirts or doodads, but now I buy a piece of jewelry from each special location. Earrings, bracelets and necklaces last so much longer, and can be worn more places than those tee shirts.
I agree with all but 3: 1. Coffee table. Where else would family and guests set down a cup of tea or glass of wine? A tray on an ottoman would be pretty risky for guests accustomed to a coffee table. Seems like an invitation to ruin the sofa or rug! My coffee table has a small wooden tray for remotes and coasters, a battery-operated candle, and *one* decorative item (that I rotate occasionally, like an orchid or a vase of fresh flowers). 2. Filing cabinet. A small *locking* 2-drawer filing cabinet can serve as a bedside table, or tucked into a closet. Important documents, photos, and other valuables can be kept safe, organized, and easy to access. 3. Collectibles. A collection, mindfully curated and displayed, can add personality to a home and bring joy to the collector. The trick is to not allow it to get out of control. I spent several years learning about and collecting various natural minerals and fossils. I gradually filled a medium-sized glass display case and when that was full I stopped collecting. I haven’t added another piece for nearly 10 years, but I still *love* seeing my collection every day! They stay dust free for quite a while, so there’s minimal upkeep. If they were scattered all over my house I wouldn’t enjoy them nearly as much.
I agree that guests need a place to put their drinks (so do I!). I use two stacking IKEA stools that can be moved around but also stacked and tucked beside the couch for more floorspace - handy with kids. I don't think the burglars want to steal my family photos, but I use a small filing box that fits in the top of our office closet so we don't need a bulky cabinet. I regularly go through and discard things that we no longer need to keep so I can make sure it all fits.
@@PixieStixRainbow I didn’t have a coffee table when my kids were little, either. One bumped forehead and out it went until they were older! The Ikea stools are so handy. That’s a great idea! LOL, yeah, I don’t think there’s any risk of family photos being stolen, but I keep the most precious older, non-digitized photos *with* the important documents because I live in a wildfire prone area. Then it’s easier to grab both quickly if we need to evacuate. I feel less stress during the worst months if I am as prepared as I can be.
@altitudeiseverything3163 yep, kids are so accident prone! Ahh that makes sense, I keep our stuff like that in a container on a high shelf as we're prone to cyclones and floods here.
You have guests? 300 USians a week are dying of covid. RSV is also spreading quickly. And H5 is spreading now, and that may have a 50% fatality rate. We never held superspreader events since covid started.
About shower caps: I collect them and I do use them, but not for keeping my hair dry. I bake my own bread (both sour dough and yeast based bread like baguette). The doughs always have to sit for several hours for fermentation and therefore have to be covered. I find those shoer caps useful for covering the bowls to let the dough ferment. I never have enough shower caps, therefore I keep asking friends and family members to bring back home the shower caps from the hotels they are staying at when travelling. I, of course, I also collect them when I am travelling.
Most experts will tell you to keep this type of “paperwork” for three to five years, depending on the type. But you can always keep it in a computer file if you are younger than a boomer. We boomers are hard to convince that things are safe that way, hahaha! 🙄😉🤣
@ I understand; however, electronic files are only good if the power doesn’t go out and/or the internet service doesn’t connect. With that said, paper files are only safe in fireproof storage. It’s whichever one feels most comfortable with. But back to my point, a hard copy file can be more easily accessible. ✌🏽
I’m a doctor who briefly did occupational health for a well known candle manufacturer. I never saw so much asthma and allergies. I sneezed constantly while in the building
A filing cabinet is essential in our household. It is a godsend to keeping our paperwork organized. Reciently, we had to find old real estate info from 12 years ago. It was critical and saved us thousands of dollars. That file cabinet saved us.
My father in law started buying Pfaltzgraf Winterberry Christmas dishes when they first came out in 1991. Every Christmas I would get a place setting or serving piece- even ornaments. My youngest daughter also added to the collection. I have an entire cabinet of Winterberry and it will be passed on for generations. We use it from Thanksgiving through New Years.
I have the Heritage Christmas set from my parents. They don’t make that style anymore so I try and buy pieces whenever possible. My girls love them so they’re treasured ❤
Coffee tables are a necessety in Scandinavia! That is where you have your coffee. Where else should you put the food/ snacks? A livingroomalso looks empty without a coffee table!
Excellent video Taryn! I’d like to chime in on what I do about chargers/cords. I make a label using tiny print saying what it is used for and just wrap it around the cord. Then, I know exactly what it’s for and if it’s still needed or not. Saves a lot of time!
Can't understand how people wanna live without coffeetable? So when guests are over do they have to hold their cops or glas the whole visit? And where do you/ they place the coffee or drinks when you serve snacks, cake ect? We have two sofa groups- one in our tv nuck and another in front of a nice view. Tables both places (we even have candels on them in the winther 😅)
You put side tables next to every seating surface, and an ottoman in front of the seats. That way they have somewhere to put down their drinks and they can also put their feet up. You can also set a tray on the ottoman if you need extra serving space. It's very stable.
Lots of helpful suggestions as always. I love travel experiences over material things but I must admit that my travel magnets looked messy & cluttered on the fridge. To resolve this, I bought a super nice magnetic chalkboard with a decorative gold frame and now display them on it. It’s now a beautiful piece of art hanging in the kitchen. I love this reminder of all the places I’ve visited. ✈️
Oh, I lived in the country, on a river for 22 years. I would never have survived without those ultrasonic plug ins. Took care of spiders and mice. Every time we thought they weren’t doing anything, all we had to do was unplug them and wait two weeks. Yikes. They for sure work. Just sayin’…….and dryer sheets are great to put in a 5th wheel or trailer when they are sitting for a while. The mice HATE them. Those little mice can wreck havoc with munching on wires. Thanks for the video!
I have the Christmas dishes, 16 place settings plus serving pieces. We eat off of them daily from Dec. -Feb. and it’s a nice change from our everyday. We’ve been married 50 years and the children and grandchildren really enjoy them too. It’s really a matter of whether you have the storage or not.
This is a very good list, for the most part. Two things I would look at differently: 1. Souvenirs are for remembering--that's literally what the word means in French. So I wouldn't get anything consumable as a souvenir, but instead try getting something very small and/or practical. 2. As far as collections go, if you are determined to collect something, try collecting something that is not designed to be a complete set with added pieces that keep coming out year after year, because you will feel obligated to get them all. Stuffed animals, pretty rocks or shells, etc. are good examples. There are unlimited numbers of new ones, so you can always add more if you choose, but if you get tired of collecting or want to get rid of some you don't enjoy anymore, you can do so without breaking up a set. You can also choose to keep only smaller items if space is an issue.
Taryn we are all here for it! We do need it-harsh or not! I love these videos. They are inspiring and motivational. Keep up the good work. My collectable collections are on the way out right now. My kids don't want that junk. No, it's not worth any money on e-bay either! They want none of my stuff. Nobody's kids want your stuff. Don't leave it for them to deal with when you're gone! 😮
100% agree. I'm having a hell of a time sorting my parents house ... hard with collections as much is tat yet amongst that some is not. Nightmare. I wish my mum spent her money on planting trees rather than getting caught up in the catalogues old people get sent all the time.
Yes! We downsized into a much smaller home this past summer. I had to get an L-shaped couch to actually have appropriate seating space. My grandmother’s octagonal end table works perfectly for a coffee table, and it has storage! I gave the other end table to my sister, as I had no room for it anymore.
I have 2 end tables and a very small round coffee table. I keep all the book inside for the grandkids. On top is a kleenex box and our remotes. Small living room, so this works for us.
I have a smaller table between my armchair and my couch. The coffee table is against the wall under the window so I have some floor space in my small living room. If I do have someone over (which is rare) I can easily move it in front of the couch temporarily.
I have 3 filing cabinets one I store valuables in ( it has a lock) one has important documents in like the Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, My prepaid funeral paperwork, Will, etc. one in the basement is probably clutter it has all my check registers from the past 30 plus years it's fun to go through them and see what things use to cost utilities, groceries, etc. Anna In Ohio
@buckeyedav1 You're much more organised than I am. I have a 3 drawer cabinet.. One draw has electricity, gas, and water bills from a few years ago, plus bank statements, photos.etc. One has a few books. The other has a few clothes in it (temporarily). Need to sort it out. A friend of mine had a safe bolted to the floor for the really important stuff (and it was fireproof). Angie from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
We have a silicone popcorn popper. It collapses. Takes up so little space. Both bowl & lid go in dishwasher. Put popcorn in, no oil needed...a couple minutes later, you've got popcorn. Didn't have to stand at the stove & keep shaking it. ..& you can eat popcorn out of the bowl it popped in. I agree w/ most you listed.
Oh no, not holiday dish sets! True, I do not need the whole set out except for big holiday gatherings, but right around Thanksgiving, I change out my regular dishes in the cupboard for the holiday ones , and use them everyday until around Valentine's Day. This justifies, in my mind, to continue to hold on to the festive dishes.
Although I admire minimalists very much, In my haste, when getting ready to downsize, I got rid of so many of my things. Things I was actually quite sentimental about. We didn’t move after all and I am now searching antique malls and thrift stores for these items again. I have done the exact same with books I thought it was time to give away. I’m sorry I did. Lesson learned!!!!!! There is going to come a day we wish we had more entertainment that was not electricity dependent. 😂 That being said, there are many things that can go. Stacks of paper and junk that is never ever going to be used. Things I do not like at all and I have felt getting rid of it is wasteful. It is NEVER going to be used!!!!!! That kind of stuff needs to go. That is my goal for January.
you can do it ! Start with the paper and similar junk. That's easy and is so satisfying. For sentimental items, I take digital photos. And I think of who will have it next and how they will enjoy it. I've even tucked notes into furniture saying when/where the piece was purchased. That's fun, thinking someone will discover it at some point.... :)
You're so spot on! OMGoodness I almost 100% agree with you on these & I've already rid my home of nearly all these items. The 1 thing I've hung onto is the filing cabinet. However in my defense I did condense from 3 filing cabinets to 1 2drawer cabinet.
I ❤️ our popcorn maker. No oil required. Our induction stove top doesn't recommend shaking pots on top, like you need to do for popcorn, due to scratches. Agree with all the others. Almost got sucked into holiday dishes a while back. Good china is really durable so we use it everyday.
Im with you on most of these things BUT I believe a file cab is essential, at least a small one, AND when making popcorn in a pan the oil spatters all over so an air popper is great to have.
I couldn't stay organized without my filing cabinet. I need to keep my military paperwork, tax and financial records, and vehicle information somewhere. Keeping many of these things indefinitely has paid off numerous times. Like when I had to prove I completed a certain form for military insurance. Or proving I did not take a tax deduction years earlier. Other documents are periodically sorted out and shredded.
Popcorn doesn't need oil to pop. The moisture inside the kernel heating up causes it to pop. I make it in the microwave or on the stove, covered with a lid.
I beg to differ about the ultrasonic pest controls. I live in a very old house in the country and it was overrun with mice before i got the expensive type of them. I seldom have a mouse intruder now. This kind works with the electrical wiring in the house. Once my cleaning lady removed one to use the outlet and by the next week mouse were invading that corner of the kitchen. The problem is that these devices lose their power over time so I have to replace them every few years. But it's so worth it!
Thank you for admitting you can't tell us what to have, and to keep what we love. I have way too many craft supplies, but when I now cannot afford to buy much, I appreciate what I have on hand to make beautiful gifts. I also inherited some of Mom's pretty things, and seeing them in my home brings good feelings to erase the pain of our difficult relationship. My goal is to have my excess organized and labeled so an estate sale can easily clear out the house after I am gone (so I don't leave a mess for my kids). In the meantime, my excess brings a sense of security after the dearth of my childhood.
I inherited my mother’s Christmas dishes and my grandmother’s red crystal and I adore using them. I’m quite sentimental and they are totally worth the storage space they take.
No way. Keeping all of my holiday dishes sets and serving items. Decluttered a bunch from my cabinets with Cass' declutter challenge. Now I have room for them in my kitchen cabinets. My coffee table is usually filled with holiday items or my houseplants. Plenty of room to set down a cup or dessert plate. It does collect clutter sometimes but it's worth it to me to keep it around. Main takeaway here is keep what you love and use. Let everything else go!
I do buy bulk “shower hats even though I have short hair. I use them for many things. I cover many bowls, plates, etc for refrigeration. I may use them to cover a plate of leftovers in the microwave (I have to be careful about removing to prevent steam burns) My hair seems to fall out at times so I wear these often when cooking. I actually can use these with some of my crafts also.
Well given that I spend a great deal of time in my living room I must have a coffee table or where would I put my drink?? I can’t imagine NOT having a coffee table.
@ I’m in a studio and an end table isn’t the answer. Even if it was I’d have a big empty space where the coffee table should be. In my whole life I’ve never NOT had a coffee table and there is no reason to eliminate it now but thanks for your suggestion
I stopped using them because they came apart and left pieces all over my clothes. It was a pain trying to get them all off. But I still have some at the bottom of my trash cans for the smell.
I could never bring myself to throw out water colour supplies...even though I seldom used them. When I underwent chemo at 75 I couldn't get out, immunocompromised, these supplies (some were 30 years Old) saved my sanity. My accumulated water colour paper blocks, water colour pots, brushes, pencils etc were invaluable. That creative outlet was almost a new career, and helped me retain my sense of productive identity. I wouldn't have been able to buy or assemble everything needed if the supplies weren't handy. Yes, for years I had to put up with all this painting clutter. I agree with much of what you suggest. Illness and age can change perspective On what is useful a. Not a critique, just my experience.
I donated roughly 90% of my art and crafts supplies because I wasn't using it and a majority goes bad (acrylic paint, markers, gel pens) I kept my watercolors, colored pencils, watercolor journals, brushes, and water pot. Takes up minimal space, doesn't go bad, and keeps me sane.
Agree 100% Since moving at 70, hubby 84, we've continued to downsize & everything on your list either we didn't have or they're long gone. Wonderful relief 👍 Thnx Taryn for exc vids Be blessed mxxx
Your suggestion to not have a air popcorn maker anymore is hilarious to me :) because I use mine a couple times a week- it's as important as my toaster. And I popped popcorn in the pan as a kid with my mom, you're totally right that it can work well. But I also remember how stressful it was- I used to worry that the lid would slid off, and the oiled corn would pop in my face. But then again, everything's not for everyone. Good video! xo
Pest repellant works like a charm in our attic. We used to get birds in our attic and have been usint the sound repellant for several years with no bird.
Birds can be persistent. My ex has a giant fireplace and birds nest in it. He's tried to kill them by using the fireplace, but they just go quiet until its cold, and then go right back to cheep cheep cheeping.
I have a coffee table made by my grand-father from a wooden crib. Never piled with stuff and pretty handy when we have friends for a drink or a coffee. I will never part from it. No Tv anywhere for 20 years. No deep fryer since a neighbor set her kitchen on fire with hers, and no candles for the same reason 😂. And generally speaking, no kitchen gadget. ❤
I used to have a coffee table, but one year at Christmas, took it out of the living room to have more room for the tree. I liked having more room, so haven’t used one since. My husband used to call them “ shin knockers.” Also don’t like file cabinets. The papers never stand up, and slide underneath. I have 2 small drawer cabinets, one on each side of my larger desk. I do love my candles, but also love the faux ones. Great video!
I understand that coffee tables can get littered - but how uncomfortable is it supposed to be for those sitting? With no place to put a drink or whatever else I might be using.. a book perhaps -- I wouldn't wouldn't want to sit in the room at all. Is every room meant not to be lived in? It seems like there needs to be a better way to deal with the flat surfaces in the sitting room. I agree with everything else.
@@MoniTablet-gm8qfWe’ve never had a coffee table. We do have some smaller end tables next to seating, including one on either side of the sofa. Not only do they create nice “vignettes” when paired with the seating, but they’re perfect for layering lighting in the room by putting lamps on them. And, the person sitting in the paired seat has somewhere to put a drink. There’s more than one way to handle these basic needs, for sure.
I was a little surprised about the piggy banks. Fun for kids to save, etc. Not all of us use debit cards. If the grid goes down for whatever reason (hopefully for a SHORT while) gas pumps/store scanners won't work. Plus I like doing the piggy bank thing. Takes forever but to me it's fun. :-) Keep up the great work 👍✌
Some extremely great points! I have never been a candle or a fragrance person because of having cats and dog. I know they have a greater sensitivity to smell, and I always wonder how it hits them.
My coffee table never gets messy. If I have guest, they use a coaster and have somewhere for their drink. I have mine decorated with a tray which holds a vase of flowers and remotes. If a book or magazine is placed on it, we just remove it when doing the nighttime tidy up.
We eat dinner in front of the television a few nights a week. The coffee table holds our plates, glasses, napkins, dish cozies, etc. However, when we’re done,we clear everything to the kitchen just like when we eat at the dining table.🤷🏼♀️
This is a good list, but I do take exception with the popcorn popper. I love popcorn and use mine all the time. If you're actually using it, I say keep this one. I don't have many small appliances, but I do have a popcorn popper.
Microwave popcorn is unhealthy. Shaking a pan to make popcorn on a glass stove top can damage the glass. Solution: a popcorn popper! I don't use mine often, but am glad I own one.
Regarding paperwork you always mention birth certificates, social security cards, passports etc. which are obviously important as it’s your legal footprint for existing and doing almost anything paperwork wise. But you should also mention taxes. It’s very important to keep several years worth of tax filings in case you are audited. There are also circumstances where I have to reference a previous year’s tax booklet, especially for health insurance or proving your income bracket.
And the best place for important paper is a safety deposit box in a bank or credit Union. A house fire could create a lot of grief if in a file cabinet! I remember when birth certificates were only a few dollars, but they're quite expensive to get replacements now!
Space saving bags are my godsend for blankets and sheets and such. I also use just simple zipper bags for things like spare sheets and such that'll I'll use when I swap out sheets.
I have two large metal filing cabinets, neither of which contains any files. One holds kitchen overflow, and the other one is for linens, first aid supplies, and miscellaneous storage. They are great for people who don't have pantries and linen closets. As needs change, they can move to another room and be used for something else. Eventually I'd like to use them for books, so I would never have to dust books again.

Im doing my end of year declutter, even though I declutter everything three months. I think it is very important to think of others and donate or sell what you don’t really need. Recycle everything that can be recycled. Terra cycle has a lot of free programs if they are not available in your area. Throwing in the trash is a last resort to me.
I appreciate the "hunter-gatherer" reference. It's something that's always in the back of my mind these days, as I try to declutter and eat and move healthily.
I have an ottoman as well that doubles as coffee table. I have a tray sitting on it to hold drinks if needed. Inside I hold blankets and decorative pillow covers that I change for seasons using same pillow inserts. I do have a stack of six plates with different snow men that we use through winter for holiday/winter time that feels cozy. These live in cub boards year round as we have decluttered and there is room. Good list. Thanks
You had me crackin' up when you said "office supplies". Our office, craft room area I think would make you go "NO". Hahahaha. We have a four drawer file cabinet and a smaller two drawer file cabinet. And in this room is our third t.v., an old one with the triangular shaped back that we watch every day when we're in the craft room doing crafts. (I'm laughing as I'm typing) I won't even tell you about my pen and pencils I have. Along with paper/stationery as well. We do enlist the one in/one out rule. We do use all our stuff though.
I agree the coffee table is a big thing to declutter, will be getting rid of mine in the new year. Collecting is definitely my thing, way too many books and blurays. Most of the chargers are now gone, thanks to usb-c and the need for very few cables now
Some of this gave me a needed laugh, like the hotel hairnet for shower, or the popcorn machine and the need for everything in the collectors, and even things I haven't yet been given, but I am the grandchild of a woman who had a chest drawer of stuff brought in by my grandfather who worked as a cabby driver in the early 1950s or earlier, bring in single junk from the cab where he would never find the owners again, and which I would get single earrings, or broken bracelets or foreign coins. I think people saved thing then, because these were treasures. I like how you changed the coffee table into what my grandmother put into her tiny bedroom so you could sit on it while getting dressed. I would love to do the same in the den, preventing people from using this as a kitchen table and impossible to use as a foot stool. Your humor is fantastic, dear Taryn! Thanking you, always!
YES, spot on about the mosquitos. I have a fan in my utility room and I turn it on every time I'm out there. I also use it in the carport when I'm working on projects there. It WORKS.
Who cares what anyone thinks we don’t need in our homes? My husband and I have coffee together on our den every morning and neither of us wants to hold our mugs for twenty minutes without putting it down somewhere. Never mind having people over….. People who work at home may indeed need a filing cabinet or at least some kind of a filing drawer. Our souvenirs are Christmas ornaments and I don’t really care where they are made. We also buy art from local artists or craftspeople. I don’t “need” them but I do like and enjoy them. If you like and use whatever, maybe you do need those things in your house.
When we remodeled, I made a specific space for a wooden filing cabinet made for index cards and there is a smaller wooden cabinet size one on top of it. . You better believe I'm keeping it. It has a purpose, the family genealogy index cards. No, I'm not putting the genealogy online as it'd take another lifetime to do that and I want hard copies so it doesn't go poof one day. I bought a 2 drawer legal paper size filing cabinet to use to store important things and toss a table cloth over it so it is fine as a bedside table. Sure, that one needs cleaning out but it is still needed. Maybe, when I get it cleaned out, a box or two of genealogy can be stored in it so that can open up closet space. And there is a filing drawer in my desk which has the current folders I need almost daily. Yes, the coffee table gets cluttered severely cluttered and I do put my coffee cup on it. Hubby spreads his stuff from the end table to the window sill. I have moved my clutter to his mingle with his clutter so at least the end table closest to the entry is clutter free. I'm doing a wee little bit of decluttering and moving furniture around so things are looking better.
I mean, you saw the video title, if you don't want suggestions on things that might be considered clutter, you could just not click on the video? She's not telling anyone what to do but is sharing her ideas (which is kind of the point of UA-cam). I find these videos helpful for considering what I could do without and what is essential for me. After watching videos like these and being frustrated at having to move my coffee table all the time for my kid to play safely in the lounge room, I decided to get rid of our coffee table and use two stacking IKEA stools instead. They can be tucked beside our couch to give us floorspace and I don't miss my coffee table at all. I find these videos interesting and helpful, if you don't then why click on the video?
@ I do usually find decluttering/organizing videos interesting and often helpful but I was surprised by the tone of this one. Most of them are more along the lines of “25 items I got rid of” or “10 items you might not need.” I don’t think I have ever clicked on one that said “Items I don’t think you need,” and you are correct, I probably shouldn’t have this time because how could she possibly have an informed opinion about what individuals randomly clicking on recommended videos do or don’t need?
@@HistorianMom I don't see how "10 items you might not need" or "items I don't think you need" is any different in intention other than being pedantic about specific wording? You said "Who cares what anyone thinks we don’t need in our homes?". Clearly you do if you're watching these kinds of helpful decluttering videos. I don't think she really cares what you have in YOUR home, but the peace of minimalism and having enough is pretty awesome and it's great that people are wanting to share that peace with others.
@ I agree I am being slightly pedantic about the wording but I do think there is a difference between asking your audience/clients whether they have considered whether they need something vs telling them that you don’t think they need it. I don’t care what random people on the internet think about what I need and don’t need, but I’ve been slowly decluttering/downsizing/Swedish Death Cleaning since lockdown and I’m always up for ideas and inspiration.
I used to buy snow globes and magnets as souvenirs. Dusting and cleaning them was a pain in the butt. I love handmade jewelry and accessories. Now I buy a pair of earrings or an interesting wrap or scarf. You have the fun of remembering the trip when wearing the item.
Just spent several minutes decluttering my large coffee table. It had on it, a bowl from the dinner i just had. 2 empty coffee mugs and a now empty tea mug, a bottle of vit c , A cup cake in a plastic food bag my mum gave to me 3 days ago, and a christmas food magazine. A pot of chewing gum and a pair of headphones. now its clean and tidy. You shamed me into it. lol
Omgosh. I used to have an ottoman but it was so bulky and had no storage. I wanted a coffee table. I got one for Christmas and it only gets cluttered when the grandchildren come over ❤. After that, it has nothing but one piece of decor. It has 2 drawers for smaller items. I’ve tried going without but our living room looks funny 😂😂. But everything else, I’m pretty on board. I hate cluttered surfaces. 😅
It is so interesting to me how people hold on to things. I recently did a downsize. Each time I disposed of something from my family, it hurt. Each time I disposed of something I once loved, it hurt. Same with dubious purchases that I spent too much on. Very soon after, I felt liberated.
Today I’m sharing 25 things that a lot of people have in their homes, but I personally don’t think you need. These are items you can do without; you can declutter them and be on your way to clutter free and tidy home. As always if you have some of the items I’m going to share today, and you love them, then you keep them and enjoy them! #declutteringtips #declutteringandorganizing #decluttering

But can never seem to whittle it down
@karoliinaniemi2536 How about skipping makeup altogether? It's harder to get off your face than dirt and messes up clothes towels and pillow cases
Just saying
I use white dishes and then decorate the table around the dishes
Yes! White plates with easy-to-store, unbreakable, seasonal linens.
Smart idea.
Yep. I’ve had my white Corelle dishes for 30 years 😊
They go with everything !
My mother taught me that decades ago and it makes so much sense.
Amen sista!! Me too!
That is so sweet! It's all about what means the most to you!
I could not agree more!!
People do use cash. I am in retail and see it on the regular. Piggy banks are fun for kids and a great way to teach them small money lessons. ❤
I use cash as much as possible. I have a giant crayon bank that I put my change into at the end of the day, then I use the funds for my cat's birthday party.
@@andreabradley5837 Same here, It is easy to keep track than credit card.
Cash is awesome, and a nice political choice to just make it harder for retail corporations to track our spending habits.
I went on a trip to New Orleans last spring and found that most everything there was in cash!
Also still use cash as much as possible. We need to keep, for times when the power goes out!
When a person is married to a hoarder, it is a challenge to get rid of stuff. It is a constant battle of sneaking things out and trying to organize.
I feel your pain! It makes me anxious
Good luck and I hope you can find a pro to help you. It's the only way I'm afraid to tell ya nothing will get through to them any other way. They must come out of the darkness and get right with themselves first. That will help. It's unfortunately a way of life for so many. Many prayers😊
I’d go crazy being with a hoarder… the mess & their mental anguish over their stuff. Nope! Could never do it. Deal Breaker 🤷🏻♀️
I love Christmas ornament souvenirs!
I love my elegant coffee table in my living room! I keep a gorgeous tray on it with a couple coasters and my 2 remotes. That table comes in handy every day because we use our living room often!
Thank you for sharing!
We love it.
Try a beautiful box for the remotes. I did and just love it. Looks so elegant too.😊
Absolutely need those dictionaries to settle Scrabble challenges!@@deborahsimpson2732
We use them starting November first on!!🥰
Lol, I bought mine from dollar tree. Love them. $32 for a service for 8
We pull our Christmas pfalztgraff out after Thanksgiving and, honestly, I don't stress about it getting put back away in the bottom of our small china cabinet until end of January. I live in a hot climate and anything that gives me the illusion of a real seasonal change is welcomed.
I agree! Christmas is special and well worth it. Also we use the festive things not only on Christmas day but through the season. Xx
Very cool!
Love this!
I think I love you ❤
Can I have some of your energy, please 🙏 🙂
You're doing great!
Well I’m having neck surgery tomorrow so I’ll be getting my house into spring cleaning mode, mid Feb 😊
I love my coffee table. I live alone with no dining table. The living room is my center of entertainment. Food served from kitchen, work space and the center of games and puzzles.
Still playing Yahtzee by filling out the paper sheet? 😁
I love ours too ...I can't imagine not having one. Some things on her list feel like depending on life style.
Thank you for sharing! ☺
I concur the 2 drawer filing cabinet. Handy, but not excessive.
Candles forever!! Every evening one tea candle. Happiness
I have cats and dogs. I need those 'odor eating candles' or my home smells. No, the place doesn't stink because I clean, but sometimes you know the cat just left a present......eww.
My candles are soy, coconut, or beeswax and we light them everything weekend while we watch movies together. It's our thing.
Your beeswax candles are the safest candle to burn and last longer than any other type candle. They're actually healthy for us and remove odors as well! 👍
AGREED. I dntt worry about the chemicals. We live in a very toxic world. Why worry???
I use my Christmas China the whole month of December. I switch out my regular dishes and totally enjoy my Christmas dishes. If you would only use it one day it is a waste but enjoy it the whole month.
What a wonderful idea! I never thought of using Christmas dishes for a whole month! I never purchased them so because I could never justify the storage space for them. And I know there are really cheap sets available.
I use my Christmas dishes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I switch out and use them for two months.
I do this with Christmas mugs at my coffee bar. They’re hung on hooks, so they’re part of my Christmas decor!
I never thought of using it all month either, I LOVE that!
@@tarynmaria_ my kids get excited as they know when the Christmas dishware comes out, Christmas is drawing near!
Great suggestions! Concerning souvenirs, I no longer buy tee shirts or doodads, but now I buy a piece of jewelry from each special location. Earrings, bracelets and necklaces last so much longer, and can be worn more places than those tee shirts.
We usually get a Christmas ornament and I look for nice jewelry. I always get complements and the memories are priceless!
@@LoisHurt-k8r Great ideas. Thanks!
I agree with all but 3:
I agree with you on those three items.👍
I use hotel shower caps to put on my shoes when inside my suitcase. Keeps the clothes clean
I love how she says in every video “If you love it and use it, then keep it.”
I disagree with on the filing cabinet. It is important to keep housing, medical, educational and legal materials.
Same here.
Not to mention taxes.
@ right.
If you mean Yankee Candle, they are disgusting. It came to England and I loathe them.

A filing cabinet is essential in our household. It is a godsend to keeping our paperwork organized. Reciently, we had to find old real estate info from 12 years ago. It was critical and saved us thousands of dollars. That file cabinet saved us.
Omg! I love stationery, especially pens. I have so much.
lol. Another with a stationery fetish! Just looking at it and holding some of that stuff is so satisfying.
You aren't alone. It's one of my kryptonites. I'm trying to train myself to not buy new pens this year!
I love my Winterberry collection, too.
Coffee tables are a necessety in Scandinavia! That is where you have your coffee. Where else should you put the food/ snacks? A livingroomalso looks empty without a coffee table!
I have trays I put on the ottoman if we need them :)
MAYBE A DINING ROOM😂
In scandinavia we also light candles and its about that cozy vibe
Excellent video Taryn! I’d like to chime in on what I do about chargers/cords. I make a label using tiny print saying what it is used for and just wrap it around the cord. Then, I know exactly what it’s for and if it’s still needed or not. Saves a lot of time!
Great idea!!
That is a great tip! Now if only I could go back in time....
This is a GREAT idea.
I love candles and anything that smells good.
Our house is 110 years old and would go up like a tinderbox so we only do the fake candles. 😅
Candles are necessary. For many reasons especially when my furnace has a problem, I curtain off the main room and light many candles.
Great video, love it!
The shower caps I save for using as shoe covers for packing while on a trip.
Thank you!
I use shower caps to cover food.
Hey! Two great ideas! 👍🏼
I've never bought or used a shower cap in my entire life & I'm nearly 40. I wash my hair in the shower, why would I cover it?
I have short hair and I use my shower cap when I’m not washing my hair.
Great idea

Great idea! Funny, I decluttered all my magnets except my Disney magnets a few years ago.
Love that!
This is a very good list, for the most part. Two things I would look at differently:
Thank you for sharing! ☺
I use the vacuum seal bags to store alternate seasonal wear and bedding. Other than that, I agree 100%
Thank you! ☺❤
100% agree. I'm having a hell of a time sorting my parents house ... hard with collections as much is tat yet amongst that some is not. Nightmare. I wish my mum spent her money on planting trees rather than getting caught up in the catalogues old people get sent all the time.
Good list. I don’t trust digital. Funny because I just bought a popcorn maker and love it. 😂
I find that small end tables work better than a coffee table. I do find you need a place to set cups where you're sitting.
Yes!
We downsized into a much smaller home this past summer.
I had to get an L-shaped couch to actually have appropriate seating space.
My grandmother’s octagonal end table works perfectly for a coffee table, and it has storage!
I gave the other end table to my sister, as I had no room for it anymore.
Yep, pair an end table with a dual recliner and you're all set.
I waited for years to buy a 3 draw filing cabinet for paperwork. It's good quality and I won't get rid of it. 👍
I have a solid wood two drawer file cabinet. I use it, so I’ll be keeping it.
I do have a two drawer one that I do need to keep the papers I need to keep in.
DRAWER!😂
We have a silicone popcorn popper. It collapses. Takes up so little space. Both bowl & lid go in dishwasher.
Put popcorn in, no oil needed...a couple minutes later, you've got popcorn. Didn't have to stand at the stove & keep shaking it. ..& you can eat popcorn out of the bowl it popped in.
I agree w/ most you listed.
Thank you! :)
I got one of those silicone popcorn poppers for my mom. She loves it. She uses it every evening and it is easy to clean and store.
I took my coffee table out years ago. I love the big open space! We do not have an ottoman in the living room either.
I never set mines up, and I really appreciate the big open space.
It sounds like a lot of people love their holiday dishes - you keep them if you use them! ☺
Thank you for sharing!
you can do it ! :)
Had to laugh at the side table filled with stuff on the shot of the ottoman 😂
Case in point, ha!
Love my Christmas dishes! In Nov. we put up all our dishes and put out all our Christmas set. Love it .
Awesome!
You're so spot on! OMGoodness I almost 100% agree with you on these & I've already rid my home of nearly all these items. The 1 thing I've hung onto is the filing cabinet. However in my defense I did condense from 3 filing cabinets to 1 2drawer cabinet.
Love it, thank you for sharing! :)
We are using our old file cabinet to store cat food in the garage.
Thank you for sharing!
I love my popcorn maker too, and my coffee table
I have made popcorns in a pot, all my life. Never once I have shaken the pot. Where does that idea come from?
I have a whirly pop and I now make the best popcorn in my world, never ever getting rid of it
@@cristinaguerrero2737 to keep it moving its less likely to burn some pieces. Glad you have what works for you!
Spiders are not pests. They're actually beneficial and will eat your mosquitoes right up 👍
I love spiders! I simply found it funny that one was sitting on the device that was meant to repel it (the device was for insects and pests).
Thank you for sharing! ☺
Thank you....thank you for explaining my whole house. I've never been able to explain it so succinctly.
Some things...
Thank you.
Doing crafts and buying craft supplies are two separate hobbies! 😁
Thank you for sharing! ☺
I do buy bulk “shower hats even though I have short hair. I use them for many things. I cover many bowls, plates, etc for refrigeration. I may use them to cover a plate of leftovers in the microwave (I have to be careful about removing to prevent steam burns)
My hair seems to fall out at times so I wear these often when cooking. I actually can use these with some of my crafts also.
A pretty scarf would keep your hair in place, too. 😊
I don’t have most of these. I switched to bees wax candles. They are long burning and actually clear the air. And I love the smell of them
I'm going to look into those candles too!
Well given that I spend a great deal of time in my living room I must have a coffee table or where would I put my drink?? I can’t imagine NOT having a coffee table.
I have a tray for the ottoman I can pull out :)
An end table. Place a lamp, your drink and a book there.
@ I’m in a studio and an end table isn’t the answer. Even if it was I’d have a big empty space where the coffee table should be. In my whole life I’ve never NOT had a coffee table and there is no reason to eliminate it now but thanks for your suggestion
Dryer sheets. Yes. They left a film on the dryer filter and they leave a stickiness also
I stopped using them because they came apart and left pieces all over my clothes. It was a pain trying to get them all off. But I still have some at the bottom of my trash cans for the smell.
They’re toxic. Dryer balls
Wool balls take the place of dryer sheets.
@@shellybrady8269 they definitely do as long as you don't have a sensitivity
Great video! Agree with most except the piggy bank/cash. A lot of retail now are favoring cash especially smaller businesses.
Thank you for sharing! ☺
Thank you so much for sharing and wishing you good health ❤
I donated roughly 90% of my art and crafts supplies because I wasn't using it and a majority goes bad (acrylic paint, markers, gel pens) I kept my watercolors, colored pencils, watercolor journals, brushes, and water pot. Takes up minimal space, doesn't go bad, and keeps me sane.
@@11Renee11 Thanks for sharing. I was thinking of taking up watercolors. I would try second hand market places first before buying brand new.
Egg separaters ROCK! And piggy banks do too. I put all my change in mine.
Never have used an egg separator. I use the shell or my hand.
@@suechaidez7161That's what I have always done too.
Agree 100% Since moving at 70, hubby 84, we've continued to downsize & everything on your list either we didn't have or they're long gone. Wonderful relief 👍
Thnx Taryn for exc vids Be blessed mxxx
You are so welcome!
Good video! xo
@@sissimonster thank you so much!
Air popped has less calories than popped with oil. But you could do it with a regular paper bag in the microwave.
I donated my popcorn popper when I bought my Ninja Foodi air fryer. Using coconut oil, it makes the best popcorn ever. 💜
❤
Thank you for sharing!
Good for you on no t.v. ! Nothing but trash!
I got a pretty candle warmer lamp and it's a great way to enjoy candles without the open flame
Thank you so much!!
I would love a candle warmer, but don’t have an outlet where I need it. Wish candle warmers were battery operated.
I have a massive amount of collectibles!
I got them when my mother passed away, so they will stay!
I'm also keeping my coffee table!
Thank you for sharing!
I totally agree about the coffee table. Clutter catchers!
You have the book Maus in your Ottoman, very impressive! Great read!
Good eye!!
:-) Keep up the great work 👍✌
Thank you for sharing! ☺
No fan of candles but I have a hurricane lamp. We do get power outages. Flashlights of course, but flame never needs batteries.
You can get one Christmas tablecloth or napkins instead of the dishes. Still adds the holiday touch, takes much less space.
Some extremely great points! I have never been a candle or a fragrance person because of having cats and dog. I know they have a greater sensitivity to smell, and I always wonder how it hits them.
For sure!
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing!
Now I want popcorn! About the festive dishes, I like getting seasonal napkins to dress up the table setting for the occasion!
Thank you for sharing! ☺
I appreciate the "hunter-gatherer" reference. It's something that's always in the back of my mind these days, as I try to declutter and eat and move healthily.
Thank you!
Good list. Thanks
Thank you so much :)
Interesting list--I agree with many but again, it's all personal, Keep what you love and use!
It's all about what works best for you!
Thank you for sharing! ☺
I agree the coffee table is a big thing to declutter, will be getting rid of mine in the new year. Collecting is definitely my thing, way too many books and blurays. Most of the chargers are now gone, thanks to usb-c and the need for very few cables now
Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so much!! ☺❤
YES, spot on about the mosquitos. I have a fan in my utility room and I turn it on every time I'm out there. I also use it in the carport when I'm working on projects there. It WORKS.
Right? So much better!
Love that.
Sorry babes I won't get rid of my fridge magnets. They are very special to me.
My grandkids love playing with them!
Good tip about the oscillating fan for preventing mosquito bites. Will try it, thank you.
You're welcome! :)
You shamed me into it. lol
Ha! 😂☺
No you need a coffee table to but a drink on or a snack. I don't put junk on the coffee table. I have other places for my junk
Agreed with most!
Plus, deep frying indoors makes a layer of grease/ dust that we call “crud”. Ugh. Who needs it.
What is really sad is that when you donate beautiful things you don't get a thank you
I have a fry baby. Never get rid of mine. It's safer then pan frying. And I get no greese mess at all
I agree about an ottoman rather than a coffee table. When we need a place to put drinks I take out two trays which I simply keep inside the ottoman.
Excellent idea!
I would like to have an ottoman but my cats would scratch it to shreds.
I could never let go of my coffee table. It's nice to sit down with coffee and a book. Where would I put my half full coffee mug otherwise?
Can also use a stainless steel slotted spoon to separate eggs
You are so right about the coffee table. I'm looking at my full one now
I must have a coffee table. I have mine styled with a tray and led candles. Also holds coasters. Can’t imagine no coffee table
Do you have a bowl of straw balls?
@ straw balls? No. I do have an alabaster box that i keep a remote in for the candles and it’s also very pretty just to look at.
@ oh and a minka pot dupe that i love to look at. These things make me smile
It is so interesting to me how people hold on to things. I recently did a downsize. Each time I disposed of something from my family, it hurt. Each time I disposed of something I once loved, it hurt. Same with dubious purchases that I spent too much on. Very soon after, I felt liberated.
