Basically if you're laid on a beach and you feel an earthquake get up to high ground fast! Stay there for 2 hours if no massive wave has rolled in then you're OK to come down. Don't really need advanced sensors and official warnings when the ground literally shook under you! There's you're warning!
Such an insightful documentary on the science of tsunami. This just shows the significance of investment on early warning systems and proper urban/land planning.
There is no way to tame nature especially regarding earthquakes and tsunamis. It’s just nature doing its thing on a massive scale that reminds us how small we are. All we can do is figure out how to get out of its way while it does its dance.
The meaning of 'tsu' (津) is a little bit different to that of 'port'. It can mean a crossing place, a place accessible to landing boats (not harbour, quay or wharf). A very gradual easily accessible coastline. It is also used to mean 'abundance'. Hence why the character if often found in place names. Indeed, I live in a city called 'Futtsu' (富津) , the next city along the coast is Kimitsu (君津) and then Kisarazu (木更津) . all in succession. Neither is the word/character limited to coastal areas as the prefectural capital of Shiga is Otsu (大津). A land locked prefecture, but with a very large lake called Biwa. Places with 'tsu' in their name are often wide open areas where waves are typically not so high as they are spread out over a distance. Therefore, a high wave in such an area is very notable and hence possibly why the massive waves are known as 'tsunami'.
A slight correction on the documentary: - 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was mostly recorded on camcorders, professional video cameras and digital cameras of tourists, news videographers and locals in the affected areas, and their videos were among the clearest audio-visual records of the fateful day. There were very few cellphone video footages of the tsunami as camera phones back then were still too expensive for most people. The cellphone videos were terribly grainy and blurry due to the technical limitations of the phones's camera sensors back then. - 2011 Japan tsunami was the first tsunami disaster to have lots of videos recorded by phone cameras of eyewitnesses and survivors of the tragedy.
i was thinking the same, its always a risk when you build very close to the sea and where the earthquakes are possible that can cause tsunamies. i would say that people should think twice after this disaster to build again so close to the shore.:(
haha joke? Are you suggesting that people not build houses in seismic regions? Have you ever studied geography in your life? These people have lived in these regions for centuries and millennia, we have to adapt! What's your next suggestion? Don't live in regions where there are tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes? hahaha
In Tohoku, many areas have done just that. However, it isn't always possible and people who make this suggestion are ignorant of local conditions and fail to consider the disadvantages of what would be lost by not rebuilding in those areas.
"Make a huge sea wall along the coast line, that can lower and raise up when needed, and make it high enough and think enough that it could absorb the massive impact of the wave! That might stop the Tsunami way?
Tsunami height can be measured by: - Earthquake magnitude - Subduction zone length causing the earthquake - Water amount displaced by the subduction zone affected - Aggressive topographic features and height differences, including underwater zones especially near the coast (narrow zones like bays causes tsunamis to pile up more) - Land level vs sea level - As well as the seasonal tide levels

I can't believe how quickly the tsunami hit in Palu! It's shocking that warnings couldn't even be issued in time. Do you think your city is prepared for something like this?
2 minutes after the earthquake, tsunami hit palu.. when the signal for tremor received by national metheorology agency.. they need time to modelling range of wave.. yes we get notified by the quake, but tsunami needed to simulate by agencies before warning get issued to people... how far the wave, what time to reach coast line... some people must be instructed to avoid any confusion ASAP. Barring any destruction on facilities, building etc... and a land slide can close the road... some part Palu they built houses for living on sediment ground.. the quake trigger for soft ground to roll upside down.. you can find it on youtube how devastating liquifaction affect in Palu
Part of what makes tsunami waves so deadly is due to their incredible long wavelength which allows them to travel vast distances while loosing little energy. Tsunamis move the entire water column from the sea floor to surface releasing an insane amount of energy.
Nowadays, we have early alert mechanism that can inform everyone near the neutral disaster much faster. You also have researcher who look into the matter for few weeks advance. We can try to decrease the impact by build beach protection barrier. More like dropping the protection concrete near the shore.
No mentions of Miyawaki forests belts? They establish super fast and make a powerful wall that slows down the water, especially if built on top of the debris from prior tsunamis.
The opening remarks are misleading, as knowledge of tsunamis, their causes, and impacts are well-documented before dec 26 2004. Events like the 1960 Chilean tsunami and the 1883 Krakatoa eruption, along with geological evidence such as tsunami-induced sedimentary deposits, marine fossils found far inland, and abrupt changes in coastal landforms, demonstrate this. The Fukushima disaster, cited here as a reactor explosion caused by the tsunami, was actually the result of flooding disabling power systems, leading to overheating and hydrogen buildup-not a direct tsunami-triggered explosion. This video’s narrative tells half-truths, misrepresenting both historical knowledge and the specifics of Fukushima.
A two store building is not built at sea level. That building could easily be 10-20 m above sea level plus the wave hitting the second floor 6-10 m above ground, the wave would need to be 20-30m
The 20-30 meters wave happened around southern Aceh Province, Indonesia. There's no video about it, the measurement is based on erosion around the hill after the tsunami. . Most of video is in Banda Aceh (northern part of Aceh) and Thailand.
Japan has had Tsunami since the formation of the country. Earthquakes cause Tsunami, so do artificial quakes such as ocean drilling exploration. You just have to go to the higher ground without looking back. Decide the gathering point with your loved ones, in case they will be at different places when Tsunami is coming.
Scientists using satellite imagery in collaboration with local fishermen should pay a closer attention to marine life as an early warning system. Unusual movement of marine life is usually an early indicator of a potential undersea earthquake and subsequent tsunami!
What we need to do is build a system which catches the tsunami 🌊 underground generating energy from it even. Pushing it up only generates the tsunamis build up
First need start one and for all learn how stop such catastroph as war. And then unite people on common human value for find way from that problem for life
sigh...the Atlantic Ocean will unlikely be subjected to a tsunami as you need large subduction zone activity. The Caribbean plate could potentially generate one, but probably not on the scale of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Focus resources on the Pacific and Indian oceans. Improve systems in these areas first.
Tsunami also happened because of shallow earthquake (6.0 ++ Richter Scale) and volcano (either explosion like Hunga Tonga 2022 or slide like Krakatoa 2018). If I am not mistaken, Lisboa aroung 1700s experienced the big earthquake and tsunami that wipe the city too. Its so much better to be prepared to prevent worst things possible.

Easier said than done and what does one do if there is no higher ground? This is the problem that faces the people of Kochi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Kochi is flat with higher ground tens of kilometres away and it is the prefecture on the southern cost of Shikoku, directly facing onto the Pacific and the Nakai trough. Some municipalities have built special towers (like observatory towers rather than buildings) to act as evacuation points, but whether they will be high enough is a different matter. Heading to structurally sound concrete buildings is an option, but as we saw in Tohoku, waves reached heights that completely submerged these high buildings in some areas. Another idea that was proposed and employed by some (but not many at all) are special capsules that can withstand being hit by debris and protect the occupants. A sort of lifeboat if you will. In Sendai, they have built a park which has several high mounds with not only stairs to the summit, but also a path that curves around the mounds to allow for people who are unable to climb stairs or for people with wheelchairs, pushchairs etc to climb more easily. However, such measures are few and far between an earthquake hitting Tokyo, or the Nakai trough earthquake will cause many deaths and casualties as well as vast destruction. Will. Not maybe. My own home will likely suffer from liquefaction even before a tsunami arrives. To get to higher ground will take 15 minutes by car, assuming the roads are still passable (unlikely) and about 5 minutes to an elevation of 11metres on foot. To reach the next highest point I would have to descend before climbing and that means that I am unlikely to reach that area on foot in enough time. There are no viable concrete structures near me either and the local government does not have the funds to build anything as they are financially strained and financing a project for a 'maybe' (in reality it is will, not maybe) is simply unjustifiable in the short term. This is the reality.

This is an extremely valuable video with visual simulations that are extremely helpful in understanding how tsunamis impact coastal areas. It’s nonsense to say a mislabeled image degrades the value of this documentary or the quality of their journalism.
The Palu 2018 earthquake and tsunami actually is one of the most recent and deadly tsunami happened. The first wave even coming a minute after the shake happened. There's people died and many we can learn from the disaster. Don't you dare to invalidate those who passed with 'unknown place'. . The reason of why there's not many video regarding the disaster like Japan 2011 tsunami is because of how fast the tsunami come and how powerfull the earthquake and liquifaction is.
Pretty stupid reporting about the Japanese tsunami, 18,000 died but you choose to highlight the nuclear 'disaster' that killed nobody. Emotive rather than informative, which unfortunately is normal operation for reporters.
Well if the people got caught off guard by the waves, watched and filmed it all then 250,000 died, I doubt the houses collapse from an earthquake. You guys are pretty dramatic here for your day on camera.......probably the most excitement you scientists have seen in quite sometime. I watched this just like half the planet when it happened and I don't think any of us thought an earthquake took down the homes or if there even was one.
Stop living near and around natural disasters. It’s like constructing homes on the highest mountains and wondering why people are falling to their deaths

Get a snorkel?
Just don’t buy a house on the shoreline if you are worried about it.
How about not building cities next to the ocean. 😂😂😂😂
Devils advocate here, if you see extended military services around those areas of investigation especially American 3 letter agencies i advise that you head to the hills 😢
My heart and prayers to all those affected by these terror waves ❤❤❤
What you mean?
Waht year is this.?
American. Native indians say it for 1000urs. Don't build too closed to the ocean .build inland.they didn need no science its como. Sense
.
Which Native Americans? Seminoles lived in Florida in flooded areas where they always faced hurricanes and floods, are they wrong? Which tribe are you talking about? Not to mention the thousands of cities in the world that grew up on the coast and are still alive today.
Move away from the coasts.
Why don't you talk about Palestine???
Im sure paying more tax will fix it.....😴
Get away from the coasts. Hide in the mountains. Or be doomed, dipsticks.
If you want to live by the sea tough
every 7 years there's a tsunami in Asia, that not a good sign for 2025!
Free Palestine
The worst Tsunami documentary !!! Shame on you DM! Very poor journalism!!!
Why ?
I Didn't get it
@ because the videos they showed are from Sri Lanka and India while they talk ONLY about an unknown place in Indonesia!!!
This is an extremely valuable video with visual simulations that are extremely helpful in understanding how tsunamis impact coastal areas. It’s nonsense to say a mislabeled image degrades the value of this documentary or the quality of their journalism.

Butthurt cause they didn't focus on your country.
That's not selfish at all.
Make your own video
LUKE 21:23 Nations will be in perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the seas
🙄
Well if the people got caught off guard by the waves, watched and filmed it all then 250,000 died, I doubt the houses collapse from an earthquake. You guys are pretty dramatic here for your day on camera.......probably the most excitement you scientists have seen in quite sometime. I watched this just like half the planet when it happened and I don't think any of us thought an earthquake took down the homes or if there even was one.
Stop living near and around natural disasters. It’s like constructing homes on the highest mountains and wondering why people are falling to their deaths
