This is a great concept, an RTS where you can play as your own units but you also play as the big boss and you can actually be assassinated or watch out the windows of your base as the enemy army approaches. It's brilliant.
You should check out Dragon Commander
Also Cortex Command.
BATTLEZONE - best FPS/RTS ever. Originally from 1998 it was remastered in 2016. Fantastic game and it's exactly like this (only better). You play as the commander and you can build tanks, get in them, get out of them, shoot at people with a gun, shoot pilots out of tanks with a high powered rifle, etc. It's dope
Since everyone is suggesting RTS where you can play as an army or just one guy.
I Suggest to you; Kenshi.
I'll also throw in a suggestion, although its not technically an rts but same idea of actually in person leading an army into battle that is at your command
The entire mount and blade franchise is about this. There's a few different settings, napoleonic europe, medieval europe, scandanavian europ... well just europe but time periods more or less. It's pretty good, I have the most time sunk in warband but I hear that the viking one is nice.
The game looks stupid but the idea and model sounds genius. I would love to play a fully funded version of this game.
IgBtac0 I'm tempted to play this bitch as-is, that's how on board I am for this idea. But in the fully funded version, if they don't let me research powered armor for my Exec to wear, I'm done.

Oumshka the game is only thirteen dollars on steam, but it's a lot of fun, but the bots instantly have a base set up when you go against them, so I recommend this game to be played with friends
