@@ivanbanta748 Hey Ivan, it's not mandatory to have a degree to be an adjuster, but it makes it easier. If no degree, then you'd need to start as a customer service rep then work up to adjuster.
I would advise starting to work as a customer service rep at any insurance company, and they'll usually pay for you to get your adjusting licenses if they want you to do that part of the work!
@@derricksuhambe4228 Oh nice! Sorry I'm seeing this a bit late, hopefully you've already gotten a job. It's best to apply directly on insurance sites, so for example if there was a Progressive call center or auto shop in your area, you could go to Progressive.com and look for jobs to apply directly on the site.
I am in the Insurance field (started as an Claim Assistant) and I recommend that anyone starting in the industry start at the bottom. It gives you a great scope of the kinds of claims that exist in the world of claims. Thank you for sharing, Athena! Glad I stumbled on this video.

Great information! I'm currently a customer service rep for an insurance company. I hope to eventually move up to claims customer rep in the future.
I started as a customer service rep and after a year started adjusting claims. You have to be the type to be able to lock in and make quik decisions. Its good to start as a staff adjuster first because they will pay for your test and all of your licences.

Personal Injury lawyer here. So nice to put a face to the people we talk to everyday. I think you’re spot on with being genuine and having compassion. As attorneys advocating for the other side that’s all we can ask for. We both have jobs to do. As long as an adjuster communicates and is respectful doesn’t matter how much we disagree. I literally just got promoted to Claims Trainee. Started as an Office Assistant, and then claims assistant. Everything you are saying is the same thing I had said in my interview (found your video after the fact)- maybe that's why I got the job.

Excellent video. Very clear-cut and straight to the point. I currently have my Life Insurance license. I have plans to take the property and casualty exam to write auto insurance policies. If I took the All Lines Adjuster exam does that give me lead way to automatically be able to write auto policies and do Adjuster's work?

If you get your All-lines license, go with catastrophic adjusting in the field of homes. You can visit homes in person and adjust the claims. It’s good to walk away with over 1k a day if you do the work. Otherwise go with a life and Heath license and sell sell sell. That’s how you really make money in the insurance field.
Won't you need a mentor though for the catastrophic adjusting?
@@fairy274 yes and no - plenty of catastrophe / property damage trainee positions and specific certs / training you can get directly for experience . The people that want to do CAT adjusting figures out how to do it regardless
Thanks for this video! I have been looking into this job to escape retail. I have a Psychology degree. I recently got the idea when a girl ran into me in a parking lot. I guess you have to remember that the customers you’re working with are usually already having a bad day if they’re dealing with insurance. The smallest gestures of kindness in those times have always helped me the most.

woohoo, rental car claims! Sometimes they were my favorite, because if they had taken out rental insurance, I wouldn't need to worry about them until I got word they were paid! Best of luck out there!

You do not need a college degree to be a claims adjuster, just a high school diploma. All you need in most states is to take the pre-license course and take the exam. I know this because I don’t have a college degree I’m a licensed agent in multiple states and I’m currently studying for the adjuster exam.

Is this job answering phones all day or more like looking through files and returning calls/making calls?
Do you work a standard or non standard ins.? I have been adjusting for non standard 3 years and got transferred to a more standard client and it's difficult to adjust to. Any tips ?
Hey Athena great video! I am glad you're enjoying your new career as an adjuster. I have my Property and Casualty license to sell insurance. I want to ask you Now how are you able to become an insurance adjuster independently, say if you like never worked at one specific insurance company for a period of time?
Sure. So I'm not an independent adjuster, but you can apply to independent adjusting firms where they will send you jobs if you're a good fit. This also applies if you're thinking more along the lines of being an independent appraiser, aka someone who goes out to write up estimates of auto or property damages. Catastrophies are a good paying example.
I’m working at a major company and have gotten a P&C License. Are there any steps or directions that you think I should take?
I started 2 years ago. I love my job. I started as customer service and have worked up one position so far! They pay for my school and I lovvveee my department. I'm still in claims and I want to go to SIU so I'm going through all the steps first.
I think it's worth it for me.

SIU (special investigations unit, for anyone else reading this) is so cool! I worked on 3 claims closely with our in-house SIU and i felt like a secret agent hehe.
Can you please review over what you know about workers compensation adjuster and is that harder to get into the department. I am currently an Environmental Health and Safety Manager in GISO and I enjoy the workers compensation side of my job duties as well as safety training.
Hey there! So sorry for the delay, UA-cam doesn't always send me notifications. I think that if anything, worker's comp is most likely easier to get into, especially if you have experience. I hope things worked out for you!

Omg that's awesome!! Yeah I was really nervous before my exam too. I dont know what it's like for other state exams, but for TX the test was worded weird to try to mess you up. Make sure you read the questions carefully!! Go in confident too, nervousness can cause errors sometimes. Good luck!! You're gonna do great!

It’s my third week at Geico and I’m liking it so far the only problem is that I’m in my head and I am not confident with role-playing in claims training. I’ve never worked in a call center before so I’m not as comfortable as the other people that have worked in call centers. I’ve worked in retail so I know how to speak to customers I just don’t know what to say regarding claims and how to guide the customers. Do you have any tips?
Hey there, congrats on the new job!! Are you working remote or in office? Personally the claims role-playing was never useful or helpful for me. The call center aspect of it is awkward at first, but just take some deep breaths and remind yourself that you'll get through it. Especially since you have retail experience! Just like in retail, talking to customers over the phone will become 2nd nature after you've done it for a little while. What helped me was writing out and eventually memorizing (by repetition) the phrases you'll need starting with most important/most used first, like what to say when you answer the phone. Another few are: telling the customer what a typical claims process will look like, how the car repairs will work, and things like that. Because those are phrases that you'll say over and over again to every single customer. Hope things work out well for you!
Hello Athena (Liz)! I have a college degree but no relevant experience. In fact, all my job experiences kinda suck and are not impressive at all. I really enjoyed this video and I like how down to earth and honest you are about the whole thing. I was wondering if you could please tell us a little more about how did you manage to land your first job in the insurance industry? Did you start out as a claims rep or did you get accepted into an official training program? Did you have an adjuster license already or did you have any previous experience working with insurance? Or did you just interview really well and land the job with no insurance experience at all? I would appreciate the insight and any advice. Thanks!
Hey Victor, thanks for your comment. I have a few other videos about how I got started, but I can give you a quick run-down. I got an English degree and then couldn't find work after I graduated, so I was working retail. I applied to the insurance company nearby and got hired as a claims adjuster trainee, mainly because I had the college degree. They then paid for my training and the licensing, I didn't have any insurance experience beforehand. Best of luck to you!

My wife and I would both like to get into claims adjustment (we are in Indiana). We are both in our 60s. We are both highly educated. She once ran a museum and has also been a realtor (in Texas); I have had my own business for 30 years, and am a computer whiz. Will any companies even consider us at our age? We both have considerable skills and experience that should translate easily into the kinds of tasks a claims adjuster performs. Starting at the bottom is not a problem as long as there's no artificial barrier to quick promotion based on performance.

I would hope you could get hired since you're both so experienced, but I really don't know. About 1/3 of the adjusters at my company were over the age of 50. It's a job that takes a lot of patience and kindness, and you'll have to be good at time management and stress management. I'd try to apply for sure, best of luck to the both of you!

I'm not sure about specific degrees. There were a few people that didnt have college degrees, though. Im not sure what degrees the other people had.

Hmm it sounds like you would be more suited for an underwriting position since you're getting a certification in that. You never know until you try though, so try applying and see what feedback you can get from the hiring manager. There might be recruiters you can ask too, it probably depends on the company.

Does your fico score affect if a company will hire you or not? I'm preparing to take my p&c exam but I'm afraid that my low fico score will hurt my chances of being hired.
Hi Wendee, sorry for the late response. You know, I don't think that having a low score will affect your chances to be in hired in this industry. It depends on the company and industry, but that's for things like high security jobs. Hope you're doing well.

What is the company that you work for that is work from home ?? Was it easy to transition to the office environment?? I do prefer at home. I wish to get into this work less than 3 months. Any ideas, I'm located in NY. A few ideas would help big time, thanks in advance!!!
I cant say the company, but it was a smaller one and not one of the big 5 (ex progressive, geico, etc). I started in the office and was there for a year before I starting working from home. The transition was where I came into the office like 3 days and 2 days at home, then 2 days in the office, 1 day, then eventually I never came in except once a quarter. I preferred working from home because of natural light and less distractions from coworkers, since everyone was on the phone.
Search for "claims offices in NY" on Google to see if there are any offices near you. Even for the bigger companies, you're expected to be able to come into the office easily for training and whatnot, unless you have like 8+ years of experience. If there are claims offices near you, you can check out their career pages. Look for something like "claims representative" or "claims adjuster trainee." The company will train you and pay for you getting your license, so dont worry about doing that beforehand.

Hi thank you so much for your help. I got my license a month ago. However most of the job openings want for you to have at least 2 years of experience. Even though the positions are for claims trainees. Do you have advice on how I can set my foot in the door? I live in North Carolina.
Apply to those trainee adjuster positions anyway. Talk about your previous work experience customer service, healthcare etc. There are adjuster's that work in different types of settings. You never know give it a try.

My advice would be to apply anyways if you want it, even if they want 5 years of experience and you have none. Studies show that men are like 5 times as likely to apply for jobs they aren't qualified for than women are. Best of luck!

Hey Carl, sorry for the delayed response! How are you doing now? The first steps I would take is to consider why you want to be an adjuster, despite the intense stress and heavy workload. Although, I'm sure you're used to that in the nursing field! Then, I would update my resume and have someone you trust look over it to give an honest opinion. Then, search online for companies hiring, and apply directly to their websites. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for the great video! I'm thinking about going into this field. You said you make about $55k a year. Can you tell me if you live a high cost of living city (like LA, San Fran), mid level cost (Denver, Las Vegas), or a low cost of living city (Oklahoma City, Kansas City)?
It's a great field to get into! The place I worked at started as a farmer's insurance company, so it was in a small town. 2 years in, I moved to a mid level city, but I dont think they gave me a cost of living adjustment since they weren't asking me to move.
I've been in claims for over a decade and train new adjusters. I think some of this would be relatable to new adjusters. Can I use some of this?

I work as a claims investigator for a private investigation company and have been trying to become an insurance adjuster directly for an insurance company. Will they hire me as a trainee without the license? I feel like its really hard to get into the field without it.
Hey Roger, sorry for the delayed response. Whenever I went into insurance, they paid for the licensing and also paid me to take the test. It might be different depending on what kind of insurance you're getting into.

Oh congrats on the license. Search for what insurance companies are in your area, either to work at an agency or at a claims office, and apply. Super simple. If you don't have a college degree, you can apply as a claims rep, if you have a college degree, apply for an adjuster trainee

Can you get into auto adjusting with an associates degree and no experience or do you recommend customer service to start with?
Yes, I would hope so! College is so expensive and we know that it doesn't take a degree to be smart and a good worker. Although, I've seen some of the bigger companies (like Geico, USAA) require a 4-year degree.
My first piece of advice would be to look at one or two larger companies (maybe Progressive and State Farm) to see if they still require a 4-year degree. Sometimes, they'll let you start as a customer service rep who answers the phones and/or takes new claims and puts it into the system. Or you could also try the same steps at smaller insurance companies.

Hey Priyank, it depends on what company you work for and how they divide the work among their reps vs adjusters. Long story short, the less specialized your work and knowledge are, the more youll be on the phone. For example, if youre an intro customer service rep (not a licensed adjuster, more like handling repair timelines and rental cars), then yes it will definitely feel like a call center and youll be getting constant incoming calls.
If you're at a bigger company like State Farm, there are lots of different levels of adjusters (the everyday no-fault accident adjusters, vs split liability, vs specialized like fatality and litigated, etc). The more specialized you get, the less calls you have, but the more details you need to ask about on the call so they might be a lot longer. If you have more specialized claims like with injuries or litigation, those will last months and years instead of weeks, so that's also a lot of phone calls too. Thanks for your question!

Hey there, hope youre doing okay considering the pandemic. Are you still working in the medical field? You can learn about adjusting by watching my other videos, the most popular one has the best overview for day to day Id say. Also for looking at different careers, something Ive found super helpful is searching google or whatever for the phrase "day in the life of a __(job title)__". Business health administration seems like a degree you could use in a lot of different fields, even though it's primarily for the medical field. Search for something like "different careers for a bachelors degree in business health administration". There must be a ton of skills and knowledge you have from that degree and your career that can be applied to tons of other things!

Hey Christina, a claims adjuster isnt usually going to be a side job, it will be a 40-45+ hour career. Theres about 6 months of training needed and an insurance license, so companies probably wont be willing to pay for all that unless they know you're going to stick around for a full-time job.
Working from home was great! I did work in office for a year or so before I was allowed to work from home though. One of my coworkers that previously worked at State Farm said that they weren't allowed to work from home until the 3-5 year mark. That's because there are infinite amounts of what-if situations that you will need to learn to deal with, so you'll need to have a manager or lead close by to help at first.

Are there metrics you need to meet in order to keep your job? Is there a lot of turnover for new adjusters?
Yes I remember we have to keep up with the work, or else it snowballs and it's much harder to get out of. They also had customer service metrics like how happy customers are with the service, if they would recommend us to others, and stuff like that.
Yes, there's a ton of turnover. Most adjusters last less than a year, or get out around the 5 year mark. It's a very stressful job.

Hi Leila! I would suggest finding an insurance call center that is near you. You can do this by searching on job sites like indeed.com or by doing a google map search. For example, where I'm at there's only a Progressive call center nearby and not much else. If you're wanting to go the customer rep/adjuster route, you'll need to work at a call center and *not* at an insurance agency's office. They do more sales and in-customer help, which could be a good alternative too.
Insurance companies might be hiring remote since the pandemic is still ongoing, but I'm really not sure. You can check by going to a specific insurance company's website and looking at the careers available.

Companies pay for licenses all the time, and I think that's the preferable way to get it. That's weird that they won't say the company name to you though, and kind of sketchy... Hope you're doing okay!

at which point do you need an adjuster license? at which level in claims do they require that?
It might depend on the state. In Texas you need an adjuster license to work any claims at all, but you might not need one to be the generalist phone answerer. I got hired on and then was immediately sent to license training, which took at least a month or two.

Hey Rosie! Sorry, most of the adjusters I know got their license through their company. I'm not sure about details surrounding independent contractors. My best advice would be to google "how to become an independent insurance contractor" or do a search for "insurance contractor" or "insurance adjuster" on job sites like linkedin or directly with insurance companies you might want to work for. If you find anyone on linkedin who works as a contractor, you could reach out to them to ask about it. Best of luck to you!
Where to get this coursework
Hey Athena, I was a claims adjuster in St. Louis right after college for 5 years. Now ive been a stay at home mom for 14 years.. However, I wanted to go back to working in Claims again and I'm willing to start back as a Claims Adjuster CL 4 if I have to ( or level one, just rear enders and things). How did you get to work from home as an adjuster. Are there a lot of opportunities for that. It would be a perfect fit for me, so I can be at home to meet my kids home from school and then be done with work in time to take them to practices and things. Please let me know how you found your job!
Hey there, thanks for your comment! Sorry for the delayed response. There aren't many opportunities to work from home. I had to work with my company for 2 years before we started to discuss work from home options. However, now that we are in quarantine, I'm sure that everyone is working from home. Jonathan Castillo I’m in Illinois. You don’t need a license to handle claims in Illinois. But like she said, without a degree you will likely have to start in a customer service or call center job in the auto insurance world first. These are not work from home positions. But with time, experience, and a good work ethic you can move up to adjustor without a college degree.

Is being a appraiser adjuster less stressful than a regular adjuster ?
Yeah Id say so! Being an appraiser involves looking over the vehicle/property and using a system to write up the damages. They work with body shops and the public, but arent usually the barer of bad news. Being a claims adjuster involves investigating, negotiating, telling people bad news, things of that nature.

Hey there, thanks for your comment and sorry for the delayed response. I think your experience would be valuable to companies in Canada, but you would still need a new license for Canada. You can contact companies to interview, and they'll let you know if they will pay for the license or if you need to. Hope that helps!

Hey there! I'd say it's a great move if you're organized and stress-resistant. It will be very hard if you take things personally and/or if you dont have an outlet for stress. Also, it's hard to "leave the job at the office" in terms of stress during normal times, so you might give it some extra thought since youll probably work from home during the pandemic. How much time do you spend on the phone with customers on average daily?
I was on the phone probably 60% of the time. I mostly worked cases with unknown or split liability, which means I had to do more analytical work and documentation while off the phone. It takes longer to get difficult cases closed. An adjuster in their first year might be on the phone more than 80% of the time, though.

I'm sure it's hard out there because of the pandemic.. but at the same time, we know that this job will always exist, because there will always be accidents and people needing help. If you can, have someone look over your resume and cover letter, and see if you can make improvements. Having a college degree isn't everything it's cracked out to be, anyways. Best of luck to you!
What are your thoughts on public adjusters?
Ive never had to work with a public adjuster, so maybe they arent around as much anymore? The way that my older coworkers talked about them was negative. It felt like public adjusters would get in the way a lot and not really know what they were doing.

You know, sometimes it felt similar to a call-center job, but there's a lot more specialized knowledge needed. You're also not cold calling anyone, they know you'll call.

Hey there. It depends on the company, but generally I dont think it's necessary to have a degree! You might need to start as a claims representative instead of an adjuster trainee, so if you get that interview, make sure you ask if there is growth potential for you there.

50000? That's it that's all you get paid. That's like no money at all I was thinking you we're probably somewhere around 130 to 150k year with that many years experience but fifty thousand a year basically turns me off
Yeah for real, I think the pay was so low because I was in my early 20s and didnt know any better, female at a male-dominated "good ole boy" company, and it was a farm mutual and not one of the big 5 (like progressive or usaa)
So I have worked in an agency. It's NOT easy at all. I have also worked in a claim department taking claims for a Sheriff's office. I watched this solely for the purpose that I was thinking of switching what I do in the Insurance Industry. You do have good information, but some of your information is incorrect.
I can't remember what I said in the video, but you're right- working at an agency isn't easy either. Sadly we were in a company that didn't connect their agencies and departments together very well.. So I know what agencies do and they are a vital part of the company. However, most of the time I interacted with agencies, it was when there was something wrong or unordinary with the client or the case, or when the agents messed up big time. So I guess I don't have the full story on agencies, but only my viewpoint of it. Thanks for commenting!

What are the cons of your job? To me talking to lots of customers would be a con. I've talked to customers at my job and I can't hear them over the phone clearly, some also have accents.
Hey Chris, thanks for your question. Talking to lots of customers was a con for me also, since I am an introverted person. I didn't have much trouble hearing general conversation over the phone, but I had to listen harder when it came to accents. If you didn't understand something, you would just say, I'm sorry, I didn't understand that, could you please say again? There are also translating services if that's easier for the customer. When spelling out emails, I ask everyone to say them phonetically, and give the example of "like M for Martin" or something like that, and they usually are happy to do it.

Be honest. Your job is to make sure you pay out less than you take in , in premiums. I’ve worked in insurance, it’s a scam. The job also requires zero skills, in my opinion.

Insurance adjusters are tasked with adjusting the claims to make sure they're accurate, as insurance claims are often skewed, sometimes under but mostly over what their actual value is.
I worked construction for several years, some of that work was for insurance. EVERYONE, and I do mean everyone, milks insurance for as much as they can get because it's a guaranteed payout, such is the nature of a capitalist free market society.
I definitely know a college degree is absolutely not necessary unless you want to start with a 30k debt

It depends on the company and what your education level is. I had a bachelor's degree so I started as a claims adjuster.
