    Hey, at 1:00 you play around with the spacebar and you press 'e' but I have E set to something else then you do. What is E for you? Because when I play around with the spacebar it won't cut when I stop I have to press a hotkey but I don't know which one it is, so please let me know!

      I have my keyboard mapped in an odd way so that "W" is Mark In and "E" is Mark Out.

    "But the main point is that Final Cut doesn’t allow the user to trim, slip or slide clips during real-time playback using the JKL keys."
    That's not entirely true. While there may be differences in the general behavior and the keys may be different, it is _very much_ possible to trim, slip, etc. during playback!
    Turn on the looping, then simply select the clip or clips you want to affect or even set an in and out point(!), choose either "Play selection" (/) or "Play around" (⇧?)-for which you don't need a selection-depending on what makes more sense. Then, while playing, simply use "," and "." to slip, trim, whatever your selection by one frame or add ⇧ to go by 10 frames either way. FCP will continue playing the entire time. Even if you select a different clip, edit point, etc. or even switch to the Trim tool and back to the Selection tool! Now that's NOT something that Avid would allow, right? If I'm not mistaken any and every click will stop playback just as in FCP 7, which I personally find highly annoying.
    That is more or less what you're looking for, no? Again, technically different, functionally the same.
    Also @ 7:05: no need to expand your audio i.e. use the mouse. Simply move to the edit point, and hit ] for video or ⇧] for audio. 😉
    Either way, thanks for making the great videos!

    Are there any factors where AVID is better than Final Cut Pro?

    • @hollywoodfcp384

      That’s a matter of opinion, of course, but there are a few things. Multiple editor environments that require project sharing is one of the big ones. Also you might find this interesting: ua-cam.com/video/0YXEEPSqxpo/v-deo.html

    FCPX has the JKL trimming analog: comma and period keys. You keep telling about an absence of JKL trimming for so long, you'd just google the solution and it'd took a lot less time :)

    Avid's Interface looks really busy with plenty of small details I'm not familiar with. As a pro you obviously have different needs and requirements but as a hobbyist I love Final Cut. Does Avid have the Plugin scene Like FCP?

    • @hollywoodfcp384
      @hollywoodfcp384  4 роки тому +1

      Plug-in scene. No, it’s not really comparable. There are some really powerful tools like Boris or Sapphire ($$$) that can be added to Avid, but there isn’t the same ecosystem or developer community.

    Maybe I didn't understand you, but in case of JKL trimming, why can't you select an edit (with up or down keys and select the edit in/out point by hitting [ , ] or \ keys, or their Shift equivalent if you need to trim an audio only) then you just play the video using JKL keys and when you find the point to trim to hit Shift+X. Isn't that what you're looking for?
    There's more in dynamic trimming in FCPX. After selecting an edit hit Ctrl+E (or double click) to enter the precision editor. And here you can play with JKL trimming as much as you want. Don't like the hotkey Shift+X? Remap this command to any keys you like. The command name is Extend Edit.
    Isn't that the trimming process you're looking for?

      Thanks for the comments, Vitaliy. Everything you say is true, of course, but the < and > keys aren't the same as JKL because they don't playback in realtime. That's critical for many editors. Yes, you can do all of the things that you mention to get similar functionality, but for anyone used to Avid these seem insanely complicated, especially the precision editor. And the precision editor is the only way you can, for example, extend the tail of a shot and SEE the material being extended. But it requires hovering the mouse in the right place. It is much more convoluted than a simple tap of the "L" key and you also don't have the benefit of hearing any of your other tracks playback along with the picture you're trying to extend. This can often be problematic. It's just a shame that Final Cut is so simple and intuitive in so many respects but that this simple and time tested command has been needlessly complicated. If you can click and drag the edge of a clip to extend or shorten, I believe you should be able to JKL the same maneuver. Thanks for watching!

      @@hollywoodfcp384 For me Avid is a program where you manage tracks instead of editing. Sorry, but I think that is a lot more complicated than the precision editor ) It's a matter of taste, I guess. And a matter of habits.

    You can actually use the keyboard for slipping a clip in FCP : press T, select the clip and use your < and > keys to slip. And your connected clips stay in place 😁! The same applies for trimming edges: press A, select the edge of a clip and use < or >. Have fun. FCP is great.

    • @hollywoodfcp384
      @hollywoodfcp384  4 роки тому

      Yes, true! Good catch. But the main point is that Final Cut doesn’t allow the user to trim, slip or slide clips during real-time playback using the JKL keys. This is a very beloved and useful feature for most people working in Avid. Shame that FCP doesn’t have it.

      @@hollywoodfcp384 And Avid doesn't have a lot of goodies FCPX has. That's normal. Editor can choose a tool for the job. Personally, I can edit in any NLE but only FCPX makes the most effective editing out of me. And gives the most comfortable one. In Avid (as any NLE from the logic of 90s) there's simply to many unnecessary routines, the UI is too bloated with an unwanted data or buttons, the concept of V/A track is too outdated and requires the editor to keep doing endless extra actions for basic tasks. Even on this video it's obvious that Avid is a tool from the past.
