I am one of those people who was still making fun of FCPX just 5 months ago. I made the switch a couple of months ago and I have nothing but praise for FCPX. I started editing on Final Cut Pro 3 in 2002. I was upset at Apple for changing it, but now that I understand why they did it, it was the best move. It’s amazing being back using Final Cut Pro again. The reason I believe it's so good is it can start out as a simple software, but the more you delve deeper into it you unlock all these amazing tools. Anyone who stops at the basics never gets to see that.

TheGreenMind I love DaVinci for ColorGrading but idk how to feel about editing with it. I personally love the intergration with After Effects and I thought about switching to Final Cut Pro X since the price of Premiere is so high. My problem is that I use AfterEffects, Photoshop and Lightroom but there’s no bundle where I can just get those programs. If I would get the Photo package I pay around 20$ plus 30$ extra for AE, which results in 50$ for which I can get the whole suit. I’m gonna stick to Premiere Pro for now but will use Final Cut for YT and DaVinci Studio for ColorGrading. It’s just easier for me that way :P

I use Final Cut Pro X, and the way you speed ramp, is that you put your marker where you want the speed ramp to start, press shift+b and then you can drag the clip out, making it faster or slower. If you want some good plugins, chech out Pixelfilmstudios, they make a lot of awesome plugins 👌

FCPX editor here. I picked it over Premiere because people kept saying it was so much faster and I love that. When I first looked at Premiere, the interface looked extremely intimidating. FCPX's felt easier to learn, but of course I had to watch a bunch of tutorials to learn how to use it and to learn different features. The one thing I wish was different was the keyframe movement speed. When you want to move an object across the screen, for example, it ramps from slow to fast to slow. I haven't found a way (yet?) for that movement to happen at a continuous speed. Otherwise it's been awesome.

I’m still Adobe Premiere Pro. 90% of my work is motion graphics and video editing so dynamic linking between Ps, Ai, Ae is seamless and so powerful when speeding up workflow. Also, Adobe statistically updates and adds more features more frequently. Not to mention, more Adobe encoding options and exclusive plugins. The one big thing that sucks is the Adobe monthly subscription if you’re starting out for and using it for unpaid work BUT if you’re using it for business you can obvs claim it under tax.

Apple Motion literally does the Motion Graphics piece you talked about. My favorite feature to FCPX is ProRes RAW support. I know that will come to Premier Pro, but in the meantime.. FCPX is all I have. Also, be sure to disable the background render and don't optimize media. Otherwise you will be out of storage space in no time. FCPX is more more optimized for Mac hardware because I was able to create 1.5 hour 1080p videos with ProRes RAW 4K footage on a 2013 Macbook Pro. Premier Pro would barely run.

Or maybe they were around when FC was a great piece of software out of the box and then they changed it making the software unusable for a lot of creatives. Back in the day FC was as popular as Avid.... sure they are allowed and should innovate but not at the cost of features that the software used to always have. It's good that they have built on it now but there was so many features not there 10 years a go which should have been.

with my new company they always claim to be a "final cut pro" company so I trained myself on it (pretty literal timeline to yours in moving to Premiere) and I see now kind of the uses for each. For a Vlog where there's not a ton of layering needed and you just want a quick cut and not to deal with the size of footage weighing down Premiere, Final Cut is good for that. It proxies the footage automatically in the software so it always plays smooth. The problem is when you get into a big edit then the layering becomes problematic to me. You have to detach audio, then leaving clips underneath what you want people to see it doesn't play well and you have to edit the entire timeline to get a cut done. Premiere for big projects is much easier (as long as you're good a file and project management) and now they introduced favoriting clips like in Final Cut to expedite the process.
So to me Final Cut is your "social media, vlog" format and Premiere is your long-form dedicated project got to and if using black magic coloring in DaVinci. Just my take though having to use both in the company. (and honestly I still like Premiere infinitely more but having used Final Cut now it makes sense on why people like it but the brainspace to know both as intimately as you'd like is tough because of how different they are.)

After spending a year tossed between the two programs I finally made the switch to FCPX. Since then I’ve come to the following conclusions:
FCPX can perform 95% of the same tasks as PP without a creative workaround. In addition FCPX handles these tasks more intelligently (imo) and offers many features PP does not.
FCPX is fast. Editing becomes such a pleasurable experience- you’ll create more. Spend some time learning the tools and default/custom keyboard shortcuts and it will feel like warp speed.
    FCPX is professional.
FCPX is easier to learn during downtime. I tried learning the program by practicing on active projects like you. It’s difficult. With turnarounds being so quick you just want to get the work done and end up switch back to what you’re familiar with. Stick with it, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.
Lastly....I may get hate for this one.
I am FULLY convinced that Apple Motion can perform all the tasks most *lightweight* users depend on AE for. Frankly AE is just overpowered for the short list of simple tasks casual users need it for. However, Motion tutorials are not in abundance...
I had FCPX sitting in my applications for a year. I even made a (now private) video explains why Final Cut didn’t work for me...now it’s the only thing I cut in.

Hey Matti! I Use FCPX to edit my videos. I was an Avid Media Composer Editor, but Final Cut just works faster and fluidly.
But anyway at the end it's just a tool.
I use plugins from Pixel Film Studio, Lens Distortion, and some from Envato.
There is a lot of stuff for Final Cut.
Enjoy you switch and keep up the good work! 😀

Haha I just switched too. I strategically made my assistant learn Final Cut Pro X as she was learning video editing over quarantine. (We do a ton of real estate videos) Before she learned I showed her how I edit my videos, then made her teach me my work flow in final cut after she learned LOL.
Definitely helps having the same shortcuts cuz we do a lot of ripple editing. So much faster than Premiere too. So far I'm loving it!

Yo, the best thing you can learn is to attack all those shortcuts. If you learn all the shortcuts to the top 10 functions you use in fcpx, editing becomes a breeze. For instance it used to take me hours to edit 1 tutorial. Now I group the video audio and all that with basically one shortcut. Then add music. That literally takes me minutes. Then I cut and chop. The flow is effortless with the shortcuts

I’ve tried a half dozen times to switch. I just can’t stick to it. FCPX feels too much like a grown up version of iMovie. Just doesn’t feel “Pro”. If they build in an audio cross cut that can be added with just a keystroke I’d be more inclined.

    • @codynowels8417

I'm not sure when it was added, but you can do that with Command+t on two audio clips. And yeah, it looks just like iMovie, but that's just it's default layout. you can change things around enough to make it work for whatever your workflow is.

Davinci Resolve 16 Free, I like colorgrade manuly every clip, play with sound and all things. It is more about controling everything but than on the other side it is somethimes like "meh, I doesn't care about this now,...". About rendering, I have experience that Davinci is faster than PremierePro. Project exporting in Premiere takes 3 hours, that similar project in Davinci take about 2 hours to render out.

Hey Matti, Wow! You nailed it when you said that PP is assumed to be the 'pro' tool! I've been making videos in a professional capacity for 2 years now using FCPX from day one. I have always felt a bit inferior to many of my film making colleagues to admit this as they all use PP. I have even considered having to learn PP or DaVinci in order to be taken more seriously by my peers. But you (and others) have always said use the right tool that suits you...and I have always been happy with the way FCPX works for me (and my clients have never questioned my editing software choice). So you, even considering it has given me a MASSIVE moral boost. As they say, if it ain't broke why fix it? Many thanks, you've made my day. Stay safe and well. Andy

I started with Premiere in 2009 when I was deployed to Iraq filming for the U.S. Army. When Adobe moved to the Creative Cloud I bought Final Cut 7 because it was a stand-alone app that I could use without an internet connection.
Then, right in the middle of editing a documentary, I stupidly chose to update to FCPX...and lost my mind!!!
It took me the better part of a week watching tutorials before I was able to adapt to FCPX.
    Now I have ZERO REGRETS!
Once I finally unclenched, relaxed and stopped fighting it, I found it to be far more intuitive for right-brained people like me.
