  • Experienced editors trying to use Final Cut Pro X for the first time will encounter a number of foreign ideas. Not only is the interface a bit unique compared to other software, but there are literally new concepts about digital editing that need to be understood. This can be frustrating. When I show people X for the first time I notice them turn the skimmer off. Almost everyone does that at first. I did that myself, but saw a video saying turn it back on, it will make you a faster editor. I did and never looked back. Great open to this : )

I love the skimmer with the wacom, since day one, FWIW. I keep it on most of the time, but with audio skimming disabled. That can drive you crazy.

Helgi Thorbergsson Definitely. It’s great with the skimmer, but when I was first trying to get the hang of Final Cut I found it frustrating. Every time I’d lift the pen off the tablet I’d inadvertently move the skimmer someplace else and mess myself up. And yes, audio skimming disabled most of the time as others have said. Should have stated that too. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

I‘m glad there‘s an option of disabling audio skimming. Some of my colleagues just keep skimming with audio skimming permanently activated which drives me nuts when they are working on speakers so there are weird bits and pieces of sound all the time...

Yes, CRUCIAL to disable audio skimming. I have maybe used it 5 times in 10 years of FCPX editing. But I also don't do a lot of audio editing / sound FX editing either...

As a former Premiere Pro editor, when I just switched to FCPX, the skimmer was a bit anoyng and i disabled it.... now a cannot edit nothing without skimmer being enabled...so helpfull...it is speeding up my workflow so much. But I disable audio skimmer most of the time, i enable it only when i need it.
